Jean Givens Owen

JEAN GIVENS OWEN, born December 9, 1932 in Pearisburg, died on April 15 in Virginia Beach, where she had lived since 1965. She was the daughter of the late John H. and Winnie J. Givens. She was predeceased by her siblings T. Cale Givens, Mildred Johnston, Nina Givens, and Helen Givens. She is survived by her sister Anna Lee Williams and her brother and his wife John Harvey Givens, Jr. and Gertrude P. (Perk) Givens, of Pearisburg. Jean was married to the late Gordon K. Owen for 26 years. Together they raised three sons, The Rev. G. Keith Owen, II (Monica), Steven G. Owen (Becky), and the late LCpl. J. Bruce Owen, USMC. Jean adored her four grandchildren: Lyndsay R. Owen, Alison W. Owen, Joshua T. B. Owen, and Rachel G. Owen. There will be a celebration of her life and ministries at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church 2020 Laskin Road Virginia Beach, Virginia on Sunday, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider making gifts to the Endowment Fund of Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church.

Kathleen Ratcliffe Ballard

BALLARD, KATHLEEN RATCLIFFE, 87 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Carillon Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Ballard was born on May 12, 1921 in Pearisburg and was a daughter of the late Joe Gordon Ratcliffe and Sadie Gautier Ratcliffe. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Margie Ratcliffe and Frances Morris. She leaves to cherish such great memories of her loving and dedicated husband of 68 years, William Ballard, two daughters, Sandy Peters of Lynchburg and Mary Ann Graham and husband Richard of Blacksburg, three grandchildren, Jeff and wife Lynette Peters of Lynchburg, Bryan Peters of Lynchburg, Holly Peters of Lynchburg, one step grandson, Scott Graham of Charlotte, NC, five great grandchildren, Chloe, Carsen, Carter, Emma-Lee and Hannah Peters, nieces, Linda Schmitt of Hurtle Mills, NC, Linda Candelieri of Pearisburg, Barbara Stafford of Pearisburg, Rhonda Reynolds of Christiansburg, and special friend, Patti Ragsdale of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 3:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Rev Brad Scott and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg.

Cassie Carol Meador Eaton

Cassie Carol Meador Eaton, 70, of Pearisburg, Virginia, a loving wife, proud and devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully to her heavenly home on Wednesday April 22, 2009 with her loving family around her, after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Born October 27, 1938, Summers Co. WV, she was the daughter of the late Earnest T. and Gracie L Meador of Pearisburg. Besides her parents, she was proceeded in death by one sister Frances Meador of Hinton, WV. Cassie is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Don L. Eaton of Pearisburg, one daughter, Lisa Merix and husband Fred of Ripplemead, two sons, Lee Eaton and wife Jean of Pearisburg, J.D. Eaton of Pearisburg, three grandchildren, Samantha Edwards and husband J. R. of Pearisburg, Freddi Akers and husband George of Snowville, George Merix of Roanoke, one step grandson Jason Dove and wife Nikki of Christiansburg, nine great-grandchildren Ty and Grace Buckner, Jacob, Devon and Emma Edwards all of Pearisburg, Cody and Derek Akers of Snowville and Ashton Hall and Harley Dove of Christiansburg, other numerous nieces and nephews, one brother Ronald (Buzzie) Meador and wife Shirley of Pearisburg and a very special friend of the family Larry Wells, Jr. of Roanoke.

Funeral Services and celebration of Cassie’s life will be conducted at Givens Funeral Home on April 25, 2009 at 7:00 pm with Pastor Shawn Wilburn officiating. Interment icon will be Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 2:00pm at Farley cemetery in Summers Co., WV with Roy Dale Martin officiating. The family will receive friends before the service on Saturday from 5 – 7pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. Marvin Carl Jones

JONES, MARVIN CARL, 79 of Narrows, VA. went to be with the Lord Friday, May 1, 2009 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Mr. Jones was a life long resident of Giles County and was born on May 24, 1929 and was a son of the late Luzon F. Jones and Delilah Crawford Jones. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Juanita French Jones and one sister, Elsie Blankenship. He was a retired employee of the Celanese Plant in Narrows, VA. He is survived by one daughter, Sharon and husband Jerry Blankenship of Narrows, VA., one granddaughter, Julie Ann Hughes of Narrows, one grandson, Kristopher W. and wife Christy Shrader of Penhook, five great grandchildren, three brothers, Jack and Leon Jones of Narrows, Mack Jones of Bland, four sisters, Mildred Hall of Mountain Home, AK., Lindell Ridenhour of Concord, NC, Joyce Hale of Peterstown, WV and Jane Palmer of Oxford, PA. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 2:00 pm the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating with burial following in the Fairview cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Monday from 6 – 8 pm.

Roy Osborne Robertson

ROBERTSON, ROY OSBORNE, 67 of Narrows, VA., went to be with his father in Heaven, Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his home. Mr. Robertson was born on January 26, 1942 in Trigg, VA and was a son of the late Frank L and Mary Simpkins Robertson. Mr. Robertson was a retired truck driver for Southern Tank Transport at Ripplemead. He is survived by his wife, Alma R. Robertson of Narrows, two daughters, Sabrina R. and husband Calvin G. Smith of Staunton, Pam Moses of Narrows, one son, Todd & wife Shenella R. Robertson of Salem, two step-sons, Mark White of SC, Brian White of DE, eleven grandchildren, Eden, Channing, Skyler Smith of Staunton, Brandon Robertson of Salem, Quinn Moses of Narrows, Natalie and Joshua White of SC, Andy White of MD, Steve, Crystal Welch of MD, Tommy Froat of FL, five great grandchildren, close cousins, friends and special friends, Timmy and Jennifer Stewart. Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Wednesday, two hours before the service from 11- 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Giles County Relay for Life teams at the Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, VA.

Nancy Thompson Harrell

HARRELL, NANCY THOMPSON, 91 of Pearisburg, VA, passed away, Tuesday, May 12, 2009 in a Rocky Mount hospital following complications from a fall. Mrs. Harrell was born on October 4, 1917 in Pearisburg to the late Fred Cunningham and Molly Woodyard Thompson. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herbert L. Harrell, Sr., one sister, Lucy T. Martin of Pearisburg and one brother, Joe H. Thompson of Gold Bond. She is survived by one daughter, Jane (Bobby) Williamson of Galloway, OH, two sons, Herbert L. Harrell, Jr. and his wife Jane of Houston, TX, Dr. Richard (Terry) Harrell, Sr. of Rocky Mount, two brothers, Fred (Jack) C. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Salem, John E. Thompson of Rich Creek, one sister, Pat Thompson of WV, five grandchildren, Douglas and April Suits of Bucyrus, OH, Deena and Ted Townley of Sioux City, IA, Kevin Harrell of Houston, TX, Richard and Tammy Harrell, Jr. of Rocky Mount, Crystal and Jason Stump of Dutton, Va., seven great grandchildren, Meghan and Tyler Suits, Lawson, Evan, Meredith Townley, and Taylor and Tanner Harrell. She also leaves to cherish her memory many family members and friends. She is also survived by one devoted nephew, Jackie Martin of Pearisburg, whom she loved like a son and two very special friends, Betty Crigger and Penny Sarver of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted, Friday, May 15, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg at 1:00pm with Dr. Brad Scott and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church Friday before the services from 11:30 to 1:00.

David Merlin Deibler

David Merlin Deibler, 48, of Radford died peacefully at New River Valley Hospital on Sunday, May 24, 2009. David was born September 25, 1960 in Columbia, Maryland, son of the late Robert F. Deibler and Gladys E. Deibler. He was a graduate of West Virginia Tech with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and dedicated his career to the Defense Industry. Dave was an avid wood worker and loved to spend time at home with his family. His loving partner, Patti White, was the love of his life. Dave was preceded in death by his father, Robert F. Deibler. Surviving is his mother, Gladys E. Deibler; sister, Mary Coleman and her husband, Steve; nephews, Jacob and David Coleman; niece, Rachel Coleman; loving partner, Patti White; step daughters, Lauren White, Kristen Clark and her husband, Eddie; Special Grandson, Luke Clark; and furry children, Isabelle and Lexie. Because of his belief in research, Dave's body has been donated to scientific research. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held, 2pm Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dave's honor to Habitat for Humanity.

Lucy Sykes Moye

Lucy Sykes Moye, 84, of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009. She was born on March 10, 1925 in Russell County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Henry and Minnie Clark Sykes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Dorothy Lark, Kathleen Musick, Bertha Monk and Opal Taylor. Lucy is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by her daughter, Lawanda Robertson and son-in-law, Danny Robertson. She was a devoted grandmother and held a very special bond with her two grandchildren, Lora Anderson and her husband, Jeremy of Charlottesville, and Todd Robertson and his wife, Dana of Fredericksburg. The true lights of Lucy’s life were her three great-grandchildren, Loren and Jadan Robertson and Isabella Anderson. She is also survived by a very special sister, Jean Altic of Roanoke. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Thursday, May 27 from 6 – 8 pm. Please use the Church St. Chapel entrance. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, May 28, 2009 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel with burial following in the Fairview cemetery in Narrows.
