Douglas Willard Stump Sr.

Douglas Willard Stump Sr., of Pearisburg VA, and most recently of Bedford VA., died December 16, 2009 at Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg VA.

Doug was born February 5, 1936, in Giles County VA to the late Thomas and Zora Morris Stump. He was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and William Stump and by three sisters, Virginia Stump, Frances Williams and Mable Martin.

Doug is survived by two sons, Douglas “Dusty” Stump II and wife Jerri, Roopville GA, Robert “Rowdy” Stump and wife Shannon, Bedford VA, and one daughter, Penny Stump Bishop and husband Alan, of Danville VA. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Douglas Turner, Brad Bishop, Jeffry Bishop, Charish Stump, Desiree Warner, Mary Stump, Caleb Stump, two step-grandchildren, Jessi Sheehan, and Casey Hall, and three great grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Ella Hobbs, Pearisburg VA. The mother of his children Wanda Price Stump also survives him, as do several nieces and nephews and many relatives and friends.

Doug graduated from Pearisburg High School as a proud “Red Devil”, served with the United States Marine Corps, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Concord College WV, Masters of Science degree from Radford College and Ed.D. from University of CA. Doug’s other advanced studies were at Duke University and University of VA. Doug was known best as a scholar, a teacher, a coach, and a principal of which he took pride in and dedicated his life to education. His years in education included Greenville County, VA, Carroll County, VA and Prince William County, VA.

Doug has been a member of the United Methodist Church beginning as a child at the Bluff City Methodist Church and most recently the Ingram Village United Methodist Church, Pearisburg. Funeral services will be Friday, December 18, 2009 at Givens Funeral Home at 1:00 P.M. and the family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 P.M. with burial at Fairview cemetery in Narrows VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations for a scholarship in memory of Douglas Willard Stump, Sr. Donations should be sent to DWS Scholarship, 817 Oak Street, Bedford, VA 24523.

James C. Lavinder, Jr.

James C. Lavinder, Jr., 88 of Hale Street in Pearisburg, VA. passed away Wednesday evening, December 16, 2009 at his home after an extended illness. Mr. Lavinder was born on January 15, 1922 in Christiansburg, VA., and was a son of the late James C. Lavinder, Sr. and Lena Ethel Jones Lavinder. Mr. Lavinder was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army Airforce in North Africa. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sadie Belcher Lavinder of Pearisburg, two sons, Richard M. Lavinder and wife Carol of Pearisburg, James C. Lavinder, III of Indianapolis, IN, seven grandchildren and six great grand children. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn and Rev. Wilmer Wagner officiating. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Chapel from 1 – 2pm before the service on Saturday. The burial will be after the service at the Monta Vista cemetery at Green Valley, WV.

Mary Sue Martin Tebault

TEBAULT, MARY SUE MARTIN, 65 of Pearisburg, VA passed away at her home Thursday evening, December 24, 2009. Mrs. Tebault was born on November 21, 1944 in Louisa, Kentucky and was a daughter of the late Ioakie Ann Robinett. She was a retired paramedic and was the first woman paramedic on the Giles Ambulance Service. She is survived by her husband, Michael Gregory Tebault of Salem, Robin Elizabeth Meredith and husband Johnny Meredith of Narrows, VA., two grandchildren, Philip J. Bowles and wife Angie of Peterstown, WV, Pamela B. Walker and husband Josh of Bozoo, WV, six great grandchildren, Heaven, Aalyah, Anton Bowles and Tyler, Sierra and Carson Walker. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 28, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Pastor Greg Cox officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 – 7 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

CARR, Eddie Mason Sr.

Eddie Mason Carr, Sr., 68, of Pearisburg, Va., passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mr. Carr was born on November 23, 1937 in Staffordsville, Va. and was a son of the late Mason Bane Carr and Ida Semones Carr. Mr. Carr graduated from Eggleston High School in 1956 and served six years in the U.S. Army National Guard. Mr. Carr retired in 1992 from Celanese Fibers in Narrows with 37 years of services, was a member of the Thessalia Methodist Church and was a past Master of Giles Masonic Lodge # 106 in Pearisburg. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Morris Carr of Pearisburg; one son, Eddie M. Carr, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Salisbury, N.C.; one daughter, Kathy Carr Clark and her husband, Mark of Pulaski; two grandchildren, Matthew Clark and Marissa Clark of Pulaski; two aunts, Lenora Carr of Pearisburg, Mileta Sowers of Christiansburg; and one uncle, Victor Semones of Parrot. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 22, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg with the Rev. Brad Lewis officiating with entombment following in the Abbey. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Bible Bus Fund of Giles County, or to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life in his memory.

Mildred Hodge Barton

BARTON, MILDRED HODGE, 77 of Pearisburg, VA passed away at her home, early Thursday morning, December 22, 2005. Mrs. Barton was born on October 13, 1928 in Giles County, VA and was a daughter of the late Charlie Hodge and Mary Carper Hodge. Mrs. Barton was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead, retired from the Celanese Corp in Narrows and was a former member of the Giles Rescue Squad. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Lee and Jo-Ann Barton of Edgewood, MD, 3 brothers Carson and Danny Hodge of Pearisburg, Newton Hodge, 2 sisters Rowena Whitmire of N.C., Betty Muncey of VA and special friend, Betty Pillow of Narrows. Memorial funeral services will be conducted Monday evening, December 26, 2005 at 7 pm at Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead with the Rev Shahn Wilburn officiating.

Vivian Moye Akers

AKERS, VIVIAN MOYE, of Culpepper, VA, formerly of Pearisburg, passed away December 24, 2005. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Dora Moye. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George Akers, three brothers, Everett, Virgil and Johnny Moye and three sisters, Violet Philpott, Francis Albert and Shirley Ramsey. Vivian was an educator who impacted the lives of children for 45 years. She was a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal and elementary supervisor for the Giles County Public School System. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg and served as an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a member of many professional organizations, the Triangle Ruritan Club, and Phi Delta Kappa Sorority. She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Obenshain and husband David of Culpepper, two grandchildren, David Obenshain, Jr. and wife Cathy of Mineral, VA and Susanne Allen of Bartow, FL, two great grandchildren, Ashley Obenshain and Ainsley Allen, a sister, Hazel Brown and husband Joe of Martinsville, a brother, Forrest Moye and wife Zeta of Madison, IN and 15 dearly loved nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her daughter, she was lovingly cared for by Dottie Clatterbuck and Barbara Tansimore during her illness. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Dale Wyrick and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 – 7:30 at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

Derek Lyle Hare

HARE, DEREK LYLE, 25 of Pembroke, VA., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 10, 2005 in Virginia Beach, VA. He was currently living in Virginia Beach for the past three months, and had lived in Tampa, Fl for the past four years. Derek was born on February 22, 1980 in Pearisburg and was a son of David W. Hare of Culpepper and Charlene G. Yancey of Blacksburg. He was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Amy Harless, paternal grandfather, Wesley Hare, and a great uncle, Buford R. (Bo) Harless. Derek was a 1999 graduate of Giles High School and he loved playing football for the Giles Spartans. He also ran track and played basketball. Besides his dad, David and his wife Ronny, and his mother Charlene, Derek is survived by his sister, Miranda Brooke Hare of Culpepper, maternal grandmother Shirley Yancey of Pearisburg, paternal grandmother, Toby Parham of Franklin, 2 aunts, Debbie & husband Kenny Parker of Chesapeake, Katrina & husband Mark Carr of Franklin, 2 uncles, Randy and wife Janice Hare of Bealeton, William and wife Slyvia Hare of Franklin, numerous cousins, close friends and special friends, Jeffery and Courtney Dickerson, Shefffey Brotherton, Mark Hare and Amanda Scott Duncan. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 14, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, VA with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home Sunday evening from 6 – 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.

Cleo Della Howell Houck

HOUCK, CLEO DELLA HOWELL, 94 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Houck was born on February 19, 1911 in Ashe County, NC and was a daughter of the late Charles Elmer and Flora Scott Howell. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Blan George Houck. She was a member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, and was a teacher’s aide at Macy McClaugherty School in Pearisburg for 12 years. She is survived by one son, Charles W. Houck and his wife Kay of Pearisburg and one grandson, Roger Houck and his wife Jan of Pearisburg, two great-grandchildren, Leslie and Andy.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 11:00 am at the Zion Methodist Church in Todd, NC with burial following in the Zion Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 6 – 7:30 pm with a memorial service at 7:30 pm officiated by Rev. Dale Wyrick and Dr. Fred L. Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Capital Funds Program.

Lois Johnston Reynolds

REYNOLDS, LOIS JOHNSTON, 83 of Ripplemead, VA, passed away Monday night, December 05, 2005 at Montgomery County Hospital. Mrs. Reynolds was born on September 26, 1922 in Ripplemead, VA and was a daughter of the late Lacy and Vernie Johnston. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Douglas Reynolds. One brother, Fred Johnston of Ripplemead and one sister, Josephine Teass of Bedford. Lois was a lifetime member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher for many years and was a longtime member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School class. She attended Roanoke College, was a retired employee of the Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Giles County and she was a member of the Ripplemead Home Demonstration Club for many years where she served and held many positions. She is survived by 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Larry D. and Sara E. Reynolds of Newport, Billy and Rhonda M. Reynolds of Christiansburg, 4 grandchildren, Lance and Lindsay Reynolds of Christiansburg and Alison and Scott Reynolds of Newport, twin brother, Lawrence Johnston and wife Betty Jo of Princeton, WV, 2 sisters, Thelma Carden of Peterstown, WV, Eula Stafford of Christiansburg, formally of Pearisburg and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 8, 2005 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Dale Wyrick and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with entombment following in the Birchlawn Abby in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Wheatland Retirement Center in Christiansburg. Memorial donations may be made to the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg.

Edward Philip Mertz, Sr.

MERTZ, SR. EDWARD PHILIP, 81 (known as “Captain” to his friends), USMC (Ret), of Pearisburg, VA. Captain lost his battle with Parkinson’s disease on September 29, 2005. He is now reunited in heaven with his loving wife, Ruth. Mr. Mertz was born in Greensburg, PA on August 4, 1924 and was a son of the late Frank and Eleanor Mertz. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters; Esther Fultz, Violet Resslar and Mildred Klingensmith. Ed retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1966 after 23 years of service. He served in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam as a Plane Commander. He flew the N/2S (1946). S-NJ, S-NB, F-4U Corsair, R-4D, F-6F, F-8F, AD Skyraider, OY, OE, R-SD, KC-130 Hercules, including flying the last KC-130 from Okinawa, Japan to Fatima, Japan. In 1964, he broke the sound barrier flying the F9-FS. He was a member of the Navy Tailhook Association, Retired Officer’s Association, Silver Eagles Association, and Marine Corps Mustang Association. He was active for many years in volunteer work including being bestowed with the Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts of America, and serving as past president of the Havelock High School Booster Club and the Craven County Community Concert Association. After his retirement from the USMC, he worked in management for 21 years at Hatteras Yachts in New Bern, NC. He was a faithful member of the St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Havelock, NC and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg, VA. Ed Mertz is survived by his sister Alma Hood; five sons, E. Philip Mertz of Richmond, VA, David Mertz of Pearisburg, VA, Jonathan Mertz of Madison Heights, VA, and Timothy Mertz of Richmond, VA; two daughters, Deborah Moody of Clover, SC and Cheryl Mertz of Pearisburg, VA; 14 grandchildren, Sarah, Kristen, Dana, Fred, Gary Edward, Cheryl, Paul, Stephen, Michael, Jonathan, Ruth, Sam, Edward and Alex; 2 great-grandchildren, Hayden and Emma. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home on Saturday evening, October 1, 2005, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 2, 2005 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Givens Funeral Home with Rev. Diane Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, with full military honors. The family requests that those wishing to send memorial contributions to please consider Giles Adult Day Services at 701 Wenonah Avenue, Pearisburg, VA 24134, Attn: Kaye Johnson (in honor of Captain Mertz).

Bebe Jennelle McCroskey

McCROSKEY, BEBE JENNELLE, 82 of Pearisburg, VA, went to be with the lord on Monday evening, October 10, 2005 at Radford Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. McCroskey was born on August 6, 1923 in Scott County, VA and was a daughter of the late Robert Edward Jennelle and Dolly DeHart Jennelle. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estil (Mac) Ford McCroskey and 1 brother, Robert (Bobby) Jennelle. Mrs. McCroskey was a member of Angels Rest Baptist Church in Pearisburg and worked as a cashier at the 7 Day Market in Pearisburg for a number of years. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara M. & husband Jack Kellison of Pearisburg, Linda M. & Husband John Brotherton of Blacksburg, VA, Betty M. & Husband Frankie Hobbs of Collinsville, one son, James Gregory & wife Charlotte McCroskey of Fairlawn, one brother, John W. & wife Mary Lois Jennelle of Eggleston, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm at the Angels Rest Baptist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Charles Taylor and Gary Poff officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
