DENNIS EDWARD RAINES

RAINES, DENNIS EDWARD, 54 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Raines was born on August 2, 1950 in Radford, VA and was a son of the late Harold E. and Betty Baker Raines. Mr. Raines was a graduate of Giles High School, an Army Veteran, was a police officer with the City of Pulaski for 10 years, then as a musician, traveled extensively in the south playing in band and as a studio musician with the likes of Conway Twitty, Merrill Haggard, George Jones, Hank Williams, Jr. and Tom Petty to name a few. He was also a member of the Ingram Village United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. He is survived by 1 son, Denny Allen Raines of Dade Co., Fl, 1 sister, Debra R. Southern of Pulaski, a special aunt that raised him and he called mom, Mable Fryer of Pearisburg and a special cousin he called brother, Marvin Fryer of Evans, GA. Funeral services will be conducted, Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev Rick Franco with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening at the Givens Funeral Home from 6 – 8 pm.

GLEN WINFRED ALLEN

ALLEN, GLEN WINFRED, 80 of Pearisburg, VA passed away peacefully Friday January 28, 2005 at his home. Mr. Allen was born on November 15, 1924 in Norton, VA and raised in Jonesville, VA and was a son of the late Mode Lee and Ida Hines Allen. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Delmer L. Allen, Emmette W. Allen and 1 sister, Minnie Lou Allen. Mr. Allen had worked at the Celanese Plant in Narrows, the C & P Telephone Co. and retired as the Town of Pearisburg engineer. Mr. Allen was an U.S. Air Force Veteran of WWII and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg. He is survived by his wife, Mary (Frances) Johnston Allen of Pearisburg, 2 daughters and son-in-laws, Mary Glenn & Jack McCall of Pembroke, Joyce & Larry Marion of Pearisburg, grandchildren, Kristi & Jason Porter of Pearisburg, David & Kelley McCall of Blacksburg, and Lori Marion of Pearisburg and special friend Eric Shannon of Newport. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 31, 2005 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with Dr. Tony Collins and officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg Sunday evening from 6 – 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Olson, staff of Carillon Giles Memorial Hospital and to the emergency transport personnel.

Opal Sykes Taylor

TAYLOR, OPAL SYKES, 83 of Auburndale, FL, formally of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at Life Care Center in Winter Haven, FL. Mrs. Taylor was born in Honaker, Russell Co., VA. on May 14, 1923 and was a daughter of the late Henry L. and Minnie Clark Sykes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Willie J. Taylor and her son Freddie Taylor. Mrs Taylor retired from the Celanese Corp. in Narrows with 42 years service. She is survived by on son, Lewis H. Taylor of Auburndale, Fl, one daughter, Debra Stephens of Lakeland, Fl, two sisters, Lucy Moye of Pearisburg, Jean Altic of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, December 17, 2006 at 2:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home Saturday evening from 6 – 8 pm.

John Paul Stone, Jr.

STONE, Jr., JOHN PAUL, 66 of Pearisburg, VA. passed away Sunday, December 17, 2006 at his home. Mr. Stone was born on September 11, 1940 in Hinton, WV and was the only son of John Paul Stone, Sr. and ImoJean Boyer Stone. Mr. Stone was a retired millwright from the Celanese Corp. in Narrows, VA, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, a member of the Giles Lodge #106 A.F.&A.M., a past member of the Kazim Temple in Roanoke, Scottish Rite of Roanoke, past member and long time Secretary-Treasurer of the Giles Shrine Club and past member of the Giles Shrine Misfits Clown Unit. He is survived by his wife Patricia Ratcliffe Stone of Pearisburg, two sons, John Paul Stone, III of Pearisburg, Greg L. Stone, Sr. of Hickory, NC, three grandchildren, Cosbi, Ashly, Gregory L. of Hickory, NC, on great grandchild, Clayton Partin, a very special lady, mother-in-law, (my second mother), Marguerite (Tootsie) A. Ratcliffe of Pearisburg, sister-in-law and her husband, Judy & Jack Corell of Pearisburg, one nephew, Rick Corell and wife Vicky of Salem, nieces, Paula Robertson and husband Joe of Pearisburg, Barbie Tate and husband Ken of Roanoke, Jill Grubbs and husband Eddie of Lynchburg and grandnieces, Michelle Stowe and Husband of Roanoke and Kelly Bostic and husband Peter of Pearisburg. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 29, 2006 at 5:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg the Rev Ronnie Mutter and Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Shriner's Crippled Childrens Hospital, Greenville, SC Unit or to the First United Methodist Church Needy Fund, 1110 Valleyview Dr., Pearisburg, VA 24134.

Elizabeth Barger Buckland

Elizabeth Barger Buckland, 86, of Radford (formerly of Eggleston, VA ) -- beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and mother-in-law -- died peacefully at her home on Saturday, November 11, following a brief illness. She was born February 29, 192Elizabeth 0 in Eggleston to the late William Carroll Barger and Bess Neff Barger. She was recently predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Clinton H. Buckland, and in 1997 by her son-in-law H.P. “Buz” Gaffney, III. She is survived by two daughters: Sandra B. Weeks and husband Ira S. Weeks of Radford and Rebecca B. Gaffney of Williamsburg, and one sister: Joan B. Richardson and husband Harold Richardson of Narrows and their daughter Tanya Richardson of Richmond. Also surviving are five granddaughters: Sheri W. Thompson and husband, Curtis, of Roanoke; Lori W. Baughman and husband, Tom, of Old Hickory, TN; Amy W. Duff and husband, Kenny, of Heber City, UT; and Tyler E. and Chelsea G. Gaffney of Williamsburg: six great-grandchildren; Ben and Adam Thompson, Hunter and Ellie Duff, and Holly and Matthew Baughman; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Mrs. Buckland was the only surviving charter member of Eggleston United Methodist Church where she was active in the choir, United Methodist Women, and served as a Sunday school teacher. She currently attended Fairlawn United Methodist Church. She was a member for many years of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pearis Chapter #124, and served as past Worthy Matron. Her greatest treasure in life was her family and in her last days her concern was only for their welfare. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Givens Funeral Home with The Rev. Betty Roberts and The Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Following the service, interment will be at Birchlawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home on Monday, November 13, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a service conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eggleston United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Gary Kerr, Eggleston, VA 24086 or to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Charles Judy for his wonderful medical care delivered with genuine concern and spiritual warmth, bringing a sense of peace to Elizabeth and her loved ones. They also extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their loving care and spiritual comfort, to three very special caregivers, Pat Lovern, Ruth Moore, and Rita Jones, and to Elizabeth’s church family at Eggleston United Methodist Church for their unfailing love and support.

Hilda Lewis Lamb

LAMB, HILDA LEWIS, 86 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday, November 13, 2006 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mrs Lamb was born on March 3, 1920 in White Sulphur Spring, WV and was a daughter of the late William Green Lewis and Maude Paitsell Lewis. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry K. Lamb. Mrs Lamb was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mark Elliott and Joy Lamb of Gales Ferry, CT, two sisters-law, Sarah E. (Betty) Lamb and Carolyn Friel both of Covington and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Lamb-Ferro of Spokane, WA and Angela Joy Lamb of Gales Ferry, CT. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 24, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Christ Episcopal Church in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 360, Pearisburg, VA. 24134.

Luther Martin Painter

PAINTER, LUTHER MARTIN, 98 of Pearisburg, formally of Monroe County, WV, passed away at his home in Pearisburg, Friday evening December 1, 2006. Mr. Painter was born on October 1, 1908 in Maynor, WV, and was a son of the late John Ed Painter and Marinda Biggs Painter. Besides his parents, Mr. Painter was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Ann Painter, five sisters, Ethel Skaggs, Heddy, Atha Grace Mitchem, Dorothy Gray, Gladys Thompson, four brothers, George, Thomas, Quincy (Pete) and Paul Painter. Mr. Painter was a former coal miner, pipe-fitter and farmer, raising purebred Black Angus cattle on his farm in Monroe Co. WV. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Vada Mae Worrell Painter of Pearisburg, six sons and daughter-in-laws, Audrey Neal and Betty Painter of IN, Alfred Darrell and Patty of WV, Ralph Martin and Sue Painter of VA, John Shirley and Estrella Painter of TX, Dr. Conley Houston and Carolyn Painter of VA, Luther Ray and Romona Painter of VA, five daughters and son-in-laws, Gail P. and Bill Rutledge of WV, Geraldine P. and Hobart Butler, Jr., of VA, Ann Louise P. and George Yopp of VA, JoAnn P. and Raymond Booth, Jr. of WV, Dianna Lynn P. and Barry Booth of WV, 33 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 4, 2006 at 12:00pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Dewey Broyles officiating with burial following in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV, the grandchildren will be the pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 – 9 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg.

Clarence Curtis (Bud) Davis

DAVIS, CLARENCE CURTIS (BUD), 86 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday, October 30, 2006 at New River Medical Center in Radford. Mr. Davis was born on November 3, 1919 in Shumate, VA, and was a son of the late Walter Lee Davis and Minnie Meadows Davis. Besides his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Irene Akers Davis and 10 sisters. Bud was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, a retiree from the Giles High School, an active member of the Triangle Ruritan Club in Bane, the Ingram Village United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion Post # 6000. He is survived by one son, Curtis Lee Davis, Sr. of Narrows, two daughters, Ruby Jane Davis of the home in Pearisburg, Charlotte Anne D. Eads of Pearisburg, six grandchildren, Anthony Cory Eads, Shana Brooke Eads,, Kevin Dewayne Davis, Curtis Lee Davis, Jr., Kelly Lynn McCroskey, Michael Thomas Eads, six great grandchildren, Lukas Cameron Davis, Cody Hunter Davis, Ryan Bradford Davis, Dustin Levi Davis, Taylor Kirk McCroskey, Adrian Lyn McCroskey, beloved in-laws, Betty D. Woodward, JoJo Eads, Dee Dee Davis, Lisa Davis, Billy McCroskey, a very special friend, Clara Robertson and numerous nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Rev. Cindy Baxter and Rev. Kim Goddard officiating with burial following in the Ratcliffe Family cemetery in Pearisburg.

Mary Whittaker Quigley

QUIGLEY, MARY WHITTAKER, 96 of Sylvania, OH, passed away November 2, 2006. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 1:30 pm at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30.
