Mary Elizabeth Southern Harman

HARMAN, MARY ELIZABETH SOUTHERN, 78 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday evening, February 27, 2006 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Harman was born in Pulaski and was a daughter of the late Jessie G. and Nellie King Southern. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Douglas Quesenberry and her husband, James Gordon Harman, Sr. Mrs. Harman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester and was an avid bridge player and VA Tech Hokie Fan. She is survived by one son, James G. Harman, Jr. of Pearisburg and his girlfriend, Sue Aldridge of Tazewell, one brother and sister-in-law, Roy & Lois Southern of Pulaski, 2 half sisters, Betty Holgerson of IL and Martha Ziegler of CN and one grandson, Adam Harman and his wife Nicole of Pearisburg. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 2, 2006 at 11:00am at the New Dublin Presbyterian cemetery in Dublin.

Marie Hill French

FRENCH, MARIE HIll., 87 of Pearisburg died Thursday, March 2, 2006 in Roanoke, VA. Mrs. French was born on October 31, 1918 in Crumpler, WV and was a daughter of the late Arnold B. and Hattie C. Mills Hill. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Mason French, 3 sisters, Lula Mae Noble, Elizabeth Eanes and June Holbert, 5 brothers, Edward, Raymond, Harry, Jack and David Hill. Mrs. French was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Roanoke, the Eastern Star in Princeton, WV and The Young at Hearts in Giles County. Mrs. French was a retiree of the Giles County Sheriffs office. Mrs. French will also be remembered for the many cakes and homemade candies she made. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee French and wife Modesta of Silver Springs, MD, one daughter, Vickey French of Roanoke, two brothers, Roy B. Hill and A.B. Hill and wife Cynthia both of Jacksonville, FL, a granddaughter, Robbin Gibson of Roanoke and 2 great grandchildren, Nichole & Christopher Gibson, two sisters-in-law, Blanch French and Norma Frye, one brother-in-law James French and his wife Betty. Also left behind to cherish her memory is Margaret Shelton who was like a daughter, special friends Juanita and Bane Shelton, Pansey and Douglas Whittaker, Carol Madero, Betty Roberts, a special nephew Bud French and special niece Kristina Holman, many more nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services will be conducted at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg at 2:00pm Sunday, March 5, 2006 with the Rev E. E. (Dick) Jones officiating with burial following in Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton, WV. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 – 8 pm at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Rd. N.W., Roanoke, VA 24012.

Sally Ratcliffe Viars

VIARS, SALLY RATCLIFFE, 59 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Tuesday morning at her home. Mrs. Viars was born on June 13, 1946 in Pearisburg and was a daughter of the late Wirt Jackson Ratcliffe and Zenobia Davis Ratcliffe. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Luther Robertson, and 4 brothers, Luther, Budley, Cecil, Tommy and Claude Ratcliffe. Mrs. Viars was a former employee of Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Todd & Pam Robertson of Christiansburg, 2 grandsons, Zach and Luke Robertson of Christiansburg, 2 sisters and brother-in-laws, Bonnie and Clyde Ratcliff of Pearisburg, Frances and Billy Farley of Pearisburg, 4 brothers, O’Dell and Mary Ratcliffe of Pearisburg, Oakley Ratcliffe of Pearisburg, Roger and Brenda Ratcliffe of Salem and Roy and Ellen Ratcliffe of Princeton, WV. Funeral services will be conducted at the Givens Funeral Chapel at 2:00 Friday, February 10, 2006 with the Rev. Wayman Creger officiating with burial following in the Ratcliffe Family cemetery in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, VA.

Lt. Col. James Earl Hillsman

HILLSMAN, LT. COL. JAMES EARL, 91 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Friday Morning, February 10, 2006 at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Mr. Hillsman was born on August 13, 1914 in Roanoke and was a son the late Robert Austin and Ruth James Hillsman. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Randolph Hillsman. Mr. Hillsman graduated Jefferson High School in 1932, graduated VPI in 1936. Mr. Hillsman went on active duty in the Army in September 1940, serving 3 years and 3 months in the Pacific theater on the following islands, Fiji, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Solomon islands, the Philippines and Australia and retired from the Army a Lt. Col. Mr. Hillsman also retired from the Celanese Corp in Narrows with 31 years of service. He was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg, and a member of M.O.O.A., (retired officers association), VFW Post 6000 in Narrows, Pearisburg Lions Club, Giles Lodge #106 A.F. & A.M., Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies, Kazim Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Giles Shrine Club, Princeton Elks Club, Giles Country Club. Mr. Hillsman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Irene Scott Hillsman of Pearisburg, one sister-in-law, Bertie D. Hillsman of Del Ray Beach, Fl, 2 nieces, Betty Kay Legere of Fl, Rita Amos and her husband, Williams R. of Roanoke, and 1 nephew, Charles H. Hylton and his wife Lawanda of Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 13, 2006 at 11:00 am at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg with Pastor Linda Mitchell and Pastor Walter Vierling officiating with burial following at Evergreen cemetery in Roanoke at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg from 10 – 11 am Monday before the service. Memorial contributions can be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg.

Linda Mae Westbrook

WESTBROOK, LINDA MAE TYSINGER, 61, of Pearisburg, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 23, 2006 at her home in Pearisburg. Mrs. Westbrook was born in Statesville, NC on November 13, 1944 and was a daughter of the late Joseph C. Tysinger and Dessie Mae Combs Tysinger of Southmont, NC. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Christine T. Hege and one brother, Arthur Tysinger. Mrs. Westbrook is survived by her mother, her husband of 41 years, Joseph Carroll Westbrook of Pearisburg, one daughter, Sherry Lynette Westbrook of Narrows, three sons and daughter-in-laws, Jeffrey Glade and Delsie Westbrook of Rich Creek, Randall S. and Teresa Westbrook of Pearisburg, Jody S. and Candis Westbrook of Narrows, three brothers, Cecil Tysinger, Niles Tysinger and Allen Tysinger, all of Southmont, NC, and 5 grandchildren, Hannah Westbrook, Savannah Westbrook, Michael Westbrook, Falon Westbrook and Christina Westbrook. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 27, 2006 at 2:00pm at the Davidson Funeral Chapel in Lexington, NC with the Rev. Jeff York officiating with burial following in Forest Hill cemetery in Lexington, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday evening at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 6 – 8 pm and Sunday evening at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, NC from 6 – 8 pm.

Anna Sadler Link Dressler

DRESSLER, ANNA SADLER LINK, 76 of Pearisburg, VA passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA. Mrs. Dressler was born on June 25, 1929 in Giles County, VA and was a daughter of the late Joe and Callie Mae Hodge Sadler. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Garthan W. Link and four sisters, Becky Avore, Hazel Bruce, Louise Merix and Ilene Stewart. She is survived by one daughter, Sally L. Hale of Monroe, NC, two sons, Charles Lester Dressler of Pearisburg, Teddy Lee Dressler of Gold Bond, three sisters, Bertie Collins of Christiansburg, Mary Jane Martin of Christiansburg, June Cox of Blacksburg and two grandchildren, John M. Poff, Jr. and Toni L. Dressler and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 27, 2006 at the Givens Funeral Chapel at 2:00pm with the Rev. Brad Lewis officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Givens Funeral Home Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm.

Mary Edna Sadler Stafford

STAFFORD, MARY EDNA SADLER, 91of Pearisburg, VA passed away Monday evening, January 30, 2006 in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mrs. Stafford was born on September 12, 1914 in Poplar Hill in Giles County and was a daughter of the late John E. Sadler and Mattie Sadler. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Henry Stuart Stafford and one son Harvey Gene Stafford. Mrs. Stafford was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn Stafford and Frank Brown of Staffordsville, Janice Stafford and Buddy Blankenship of Pearisburg, three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Stuart and Diane Stafford of Oliver Springs, TN, James E. and Kim Stafford of Staffordville, VA., William C. and Linda Stafford of Pearisburg and 1 brother John Ray Sadler of Staffordsville, 6 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 6 Great Great Grandchildren. An adopted son Bob Via and a special friends Betty Hilton and Louise Palmer. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 2, 2006 at 2 pm at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Pearisburg with the Rev. Brad Lewis and Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 6 – 8 pm.

Noah P. Bradley

BRADLEY, NOAH P., 86 of Narrows, VA passed away Monday, February 6, 2006 at his home. Mr. Bradley was born on June 27, 1919 in Giles County and was a son of the late John A. Bradley and Minnie Tickle Bradley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Caudill Bradley and one sister, Pauline Bradley. Mr. Bradley was a WWII Army Veteran, and a retired employee of the Hercules Plant in Radford. Mr. Bradley is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas P. and Kathleen Bradley of South Egremont, Mass and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Jessica Bradley of Egremont, Mass., one sister-in-law, Frances Bradley of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, February 9, 2006 at 11:00am at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial and a Veterans service following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 PM.

Carrel Mayo Caudill

CAUDILL, Dr. CARREL MAYO, 84 of Longboat Key, Fl, formally of Pearisburg, VA passed away Sunday, January, 1, 2006 at his home. Dr. Caudill was born on September 2, 1921 in Pearisburg and was a son of the late Walter Cleveland and Mary Ring Cornett Caudill. Dr. Caudill graduated from Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine in 1945, and was a Physician in the Army. Dr. Caudill was a Neuro Surgeon in Charleston, WV for 32 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, WV and was a longtime Rotary member. Dr. Caudill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Campbell Caudill of Longboat Key, Fl, two daughters, Janet Caudill Cooksey of Colleyville, TX, Lucy Caudill Tucker, MD of Carrollton, TX, two sons, F. Terrell, MD of Baltimore, MD, James W. Caudill, MD of Charleston, WV, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 1:00 pm at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, VA with Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating.
