Surviving is his wife Janet; daughter, Krista Anderson and husband Jamison; grandson, Jordan Cantu; sisters, Lynn Spellman and husband Jack, and Anne Keiley; stepsons, John Rutigliano and Joseph Rodenback; step-granddaughter, Lauren Anderson; and friends, Vince Dunahoo and Patrick Costello. LaROCCO, Jennie Alice

Jennie Alice LaRocco, 79, of Roanoke, passed away on February 19, 2004. Mrs. LaRocco was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James F. LaRocco; her parents, John Signor and Mabel Cook Signor of Malone, N.Y.; her sister and brother-in-law, Bethel and Frank Nowicki of Buffalo, N.Y.; and her nephew, Paul Nowicki, also of Buffalo, N.Y. She is survived by her four sons and two daughters-in-law, James John LaRocco and wife, Sharon of Mebane, N.C., Joseph C. LaRocco and wife, Theresa, of Salem, Jeffrey Evan LaRocco and John Anthony LaRocco, both of Roanoke. She has four grandchildren, Francis Tyler and Meleah Dee LaRocco of Mebane, N.C., Catherine Anne LaRocco of Ashland and Jaqueline L. Downs and her husband, John of Gaithersburg, Md. She is also survived by a niece, Susan Nowicki of Buffalo, N.Y. The family will receive friends Monday, February 23, 2004 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Lotz Salem Chapel, followed by a prayer service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to your local rescue squad or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

MILLER, LTC, Retired E. J. (Juic)

LTC, Retired E.J. (Juic) Miller, 79, of Salem, quietly passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. He was a lifelong Salem resident and was the retired owner of the E.J. Miller Construction Company. He also attended VPI and served in the Army during World War II and Korea, and was a member of the 238th Combat Engineer Association. He was also a member of the Penguin Club in Salem. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elisha and Annie Miller; and a brother, Robert J. Miller. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margaret Flora Miller; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betty Miller; daughters and son-in-law, Cynthia Miller, Kathy and Terry Murphy, and Candy Smith; grandchildren, Laura, Erin and Ryan Murphy, Meg, Anne Garst and Katie Miller; step-grandchildren, Patrick Smith and his wife, Leah, Greg Smith and his wife, Sherry; step-great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Caelan, Abby and Gary Wayne Smith; sisters, Ora Mae Sluss and Peggy Ellis; sister-in-law, Jean Miller; and brother and sister-in-law, Hunter and Ann Miller; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Willard and Sylvia Flora, and Walter and Alice Flora; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucile and John Weeks; and numerous nieces and nephews. SLAN, Steven Mark

Steven Mark Slan, 34, of Vinton, died Thursday, February 19, 2004, at his residence. Steven was a graduate of William Byrd High School, Class of 1988, attended Virginia Western Community College, graduating in 1990, Summa Cum Laude. He then attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Surviving are his father and mother, Richard J. and Jo-Ann Rigo Slan of Vinton; his brother, Richard A. Slan of Virginia Beach; his beloved cat, "Luke"; his uncles, George Slan and wife Mary, Anthony Slan, Bernard Slan, all of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joseph Rigo, John Rigo, both of Cleveland, Ohio; his aunt, Mary McFarland and husband Terry, of Westlake, Ohio; and several cousins. A Mass of Resurrection service will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, 10 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2004, with Rev. Msgr. Thomas G. Miller officiating. Interment icon will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. STAMPER, William Patton

William Patton Stamper, 82, of Roanoke, died Thursday, February 19, 2004. He was born July 31, 1921 to the late William Houston Stamper and Ester Dickerson Stamper. Mr. Stamper was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Alice Spencer Stamper; and two brothers, Elmo and Tracy Stamper. Mr. Stamper is survived by his four daughters, Rita Shepherd and her husband, Don, of Roanoke, Peggy Howard and her husband, Doug, of Quinton, Va., Linda Oliver and her husband, Robert, of Roanoke, and Iris Coles and her fiance, Roland, of Roanoke; and his sister, Katherine Kahlar and her husband, Jeff, of Jackson, Mississippi. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Angie Puckett and her friend, Robert, Tammy Moore and her husband, Mike, Judy Serdah and her husband, Mike, Donnie Shepherd and his wife, Tosha, Chasidy Coles and her fiance, Mike, and Curtis Keaton, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren, Michael, April, Cheyenne, Christian, Jamar, Ryan, Lindsey, Ameen and Jamari; and his special cat, Sam. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 22, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Road, Roanoke. Arthur Adelard Houde, 52, of Hardy, went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 20, 2004. He was a member of the Vinton Moose Lodge #1121 and the Mopar Club. Arthur was preceded in death by his father, Adelard Joseph Houde, and his stepfather, Paul Boisvert. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen C. Houde; his mother, Grace Boisvert of Avon Park, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Katina Houde of Vinton; one granddaughter, Christine Williams of Vinton; one brother, Leonard Houde and his wife, Stefanie of Hope Valley, R.I.; two sisters, Marie Kissick of Avon Park, Fla., Nancy Guzman and her husband, Mario of Orlando, Fla.; sister-in-law, Connie Leavitt and her husband, Paul of Exeter, R.I.; brother-in-law, Larry Andre and his wife, Lorina of Roswell, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews. REYNOLDS, Buford W.

Buford W. Reynolds, 86, of Rocky Mount, died Friday, February 20, 2004 at his residence. He was born July 19, 1917, a son of the late Walter Anderson and Nannie Kate Hunt Reynolds. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond, Gordon, Lloyd and Roy Reynolds; a sister, Doris Reynolds; and two infant sisters. Mr. Reynolds was a retired farmer and Saw Mill Operator in the Sontag Community. He was a lifetime member of Beulah Baptist Church where he was a Deacon Emeritus and through the years had served on various committees including Building and Grounds, Usher and Pulpit Committees. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Cora P. Reynolds; one sister, Nannie Kate Reynolds; sisters-in-law, Annie Reynolds, Ruby Reynolds and Frances Reynolds; other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and caregivers, Phyllis Vaassner and Emma Wood survive. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel, 1 p.m. Monday with Rev. Thomas C. Siddle and Rev. T. Ivey Adams, Jr. officiating. Interment icon will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. YOUNG, Everett E.

Everett E. "Ebb" Young, 83, of Rocky Mount, died Friday February 20, 2004 in the local hospital. He was one of eleven children of the late Charlie and Fannie Janney Young, and was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Mr. Young was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Edith Y. Young; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerald E. and Phyllis Young of Rocky Mount, Richard and Rickie Young of Roanoke; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Gerald Willie of Rocky Mount; five grandchildren, Darryl Willie of Ferrum, Duane and Lisa Willie of Rocky Mount, Cindy and Jeff Todd of Henry, Sandy Young of Rocky Mount, Katie Young of Roanoke; six great-grandchildren, Ashley Willie, Adam and Emily Willie, Heather, Lauren and Seth Todd; two sisters, Mabel Stanley of Rocky Mount, Berta Bowles of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steve Tilley officiating. Interment icon will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. FELDMAN, Bernard Frank

Bernard Frank Feldman DVM, Ph.D., 66, of Check, died Thursday, February 19, 2004. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. He served as a Captain in the Air Force and attended the University of Illinois, where he received a DVM degree. He served his residency at Kansas State and received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Davis, where he met his loving wife, Karen. He dearly loved his son Jay and was passionate about life. He worked as a Clinical Pathologist and Professor at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and loved educating his students. Survivors include his wife, Karen J. Thomason, DVM of Check, Va.; son, Jay Porter Thomason-Feldman of Check, Va.; brothers, Jack Feldman, Ph.D. of Stafford, Va., Edward Feldman, DVM of Davis, Calif.; sister, Judy Komaiko of Beverly Hills, Calif. Memorial service will be held Sunday, February 22, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, Va. with the Rev. David Taylor officiating. VARNER, Kenneth L.

Kenneth L. Varner, 64, of Blacksburg, passed away February 14, 2004 while on a trip with his wife, visiting their sons in Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Vera Varner of Weirton, W.Va. Ken graduated from West Virginia University, was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, received his doctorate from Southern College of Optometry, established a successful practice in Blacksburg, Va., and was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; and his sons, Jeffery and Matthew; and Matthew's wife, Chelsea. A memorial service will be held at the Blacksburg United Methodist Church at 1 p.m., February 21, with a visitation to follow. David Morton Hill, 61, of Buena Vista, died Friday, February 20, 2004 in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Mr. Hill was born on July 31, 1942 in Massachusetts, and was a son of the late Robert Taft Hill and Veda May Bush Hill. He was retired from Southern Seminary College, and was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Mason Hill; and two brothers, Roger and Kenneth. Mr. Hill is survived by two daughters, Renee Hill of Honaker, Lisa Ramsey of Buena Vista; one son, Stacy Hill of Buena Vista; three sisters, Patricia Hill of North Carolina, Lanesta Jaquins, Aleta Twing; one brother, Richard Hill, all of Massachusetts; and two grandchildren, Christy Ramsey and Jessica Ramsey. LAM, Madeleine Moore

Madeleine Moore Lam, 70, of Roanoke, peacefully left this life on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 surrounded by her family. She rejoins her late husband, Nelson E. Lam; her sister, Muriel Burnette and brothers, Joseph P. Moore, Jr. and George Moore. Born August 1, 1933 on Remlik Farm in Urbanna, Va., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Myra Moore. A graduate of New Market High School, she also graduated from Madison College in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Lam was a longtime member of Cloverdale Church of the Brethren. She worked for Dominion Bank. Madeleine enjoyed antiquing and traveling. A loving mother, she is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Stacy Lam of Roanoke and Allison and Dean Humbert of Stuarts Draft; brothers, Richard Moore of Broadway and Ted Moore and wife, Betty of Arnold, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews. RADFORD, James Moir

James Moir Radford, (Cricket), 83, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at his home. He was born in Franklin County, Va. on August 4, 1920 to the late Daniel Green and Frances Gillispie Radford. He was co-owner of Radford Brothers, Inc. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was preceded in death by his brothers, John E. (Hank) Radford, who served in the U.S. Army, Palmer C. Radford, who served in the U.S. army, and Otho M. Radford who served in the Army Air Corps, all veterans of WWII. Cricket was also preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Erma and Olyn Loftis; a sister-in-law, Mary Radford; and two brothers-in-law, Bunn Richards and Roy Wade. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Helen D. Radford of Blacksburg; a son, James D. Radford of Blacksburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah J. and Harry Stone of Wytheville, Va.; two grandchildren, Frances Radford Gilvary of Blacksburg, Selena Linkous of Los Angeles, Calif.; a great-grandson, Tristan Gilvary of Blacksburg; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Richards of Ferrum, Naomi and Dayle Chandler of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ethel and Harvey Cox of Hartfield, Va., Ann Akers of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
