HAYES, Clinton

Clinton (Preacher) Hayes, 78, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Mr. Hayes was born on January 16, 1926 in Rockbridge Co. and was a son of the late Wynder S. Hayes and Maggie Sorrells Hayes. He was a member of the McCutchen Presbyterian Church and was retired from Southern States. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Peggy Wade Hayes of Buena Vista; three sons, Clinton H. Hayes and wife Karen of Buena Vista, Robert W. Hayes and wife Teresa Hayes of Staunton, Perry L. Hayes of Panama; two daughters, Jean H. Martin, Kitty Hayes-Falls, both of Lexington; one brother, Preston Hayes of Glasgow; five sisters, Mae Hayes, Ina Phillips, both of Fairfield, Mildred Butts of Gordonsville, Lillian Wright of Lexington, Josephine Wines of Glasgow; six grandchildren, David, Michael, Robbie, Aimee, Christy, Jeffrey; three great-grandchildren, Jared, Lucas, Bradley and special friends, Joe, Carrie, Ivan, Irene, Blaine and Marjorie. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gary Short officiating. Burial will follow in the Oxford Presbyterian cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Buena Vista Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.

MUTERSPAW, Clarence Leon

Clarence Leon (Moody) Muterspaw, 78, of Kerrs Creek, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 in the Salem VA Medical Center. Mr. Muterspaw was born on May 6, 1925 in Lexington and was a son of the late Clarence Everett Muterspaw and Ivy Chittum Muterspaw. He attended the Kerrs Creek Baptist Church, was a member of the Lexington Moose Lodge and retired from Burlington Industries with 35 years of service. Mr. Muterspaw was a veteran of WW II having earned a Purple Heart for being wounded in Okinawa and received a good conduct medal. Mr. Muterspaw is survived by one daughter, Teresa Ann Ayers and husband Charles "Butch" of Lexington; one son, Tony L. Muterspaw of Glasgow; two brothers, Roy E. Muterspaw of Wilmington, Del., Wallace E. Muterspaugh of Buchanan; one sister, Joan D. Humphreys of Pell City, Ala.; two grandchildren, William Alan Ayers, Sheila Ayers Parker and husband Tracy; three great-grandchildren, Jason Parker, Nathan Parker, Caitlin Ayers; seven nephews; two nieces; and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Dr. J. Michael Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Kerrs Creek Baptist cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends at any time at the home of Mr. Muterspaw and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington.

STROUPE, Randy Lee

Randy Lee Stroupe, 41, of Wytheville, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2004 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his father Fred Stroupe. He is survived by his son, Randy Lee Stroupe, Jr., of Madison, Tenn.; mother Artie Ryan Hagee, of Wytheville; ex-wife, Drem Stroupe Sanders, of Madison, Tenn.; sisters and brother-in-law, Kathy Sawyers, and Peggy and Robert Thomas, all of Wytheville; brother and sister-in-law; James "Pete" and Ann Stroupe, of Rural Retreat; six nieces and nephews, Tammy Moore, Amanda Thomas, Teresa Wheeler, Ronnie Sawyers, Jennifer Sawyers and Jason Stroupe. Several great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts and uncles also survive. Funeral service will be Wednesday 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Joe Carrico with the interment in Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Grubb Funeral Home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Grubb Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.

Leon (Buster) Weddle, 80, of Galax, Va., passed away Monday, April 19, 2004 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He is survived by his wife, Mary Weddle of Galax; two sons and daughters-in-law, George S. and Sandra Weddle of Fancy Gap and E. Leon and Dianne Weddle of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, John Weddle, Paul Weddle, Richard Weddle, and Wendy Riggs; and a great-grandson, Cooper John Riggs. Graveside service and burial Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Galax City cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

Elizabeth (Betty) Bonham, 80, of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2004. She was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Vaughn Bonham; brother-in-law, Byron Bonham of Texas; sister-in-law, Betty Hamrick of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; daughter, Sandy Sower of Salem; son, Richard Bonham and daughter-in-law, Debbie Bonham, of Chester; and grandchildren, Brent Sower and his wife, Jennifer and great-granddaughter, Emma, of Chester, Jessica Sower of Salem, Andy Bonham and his wife, Jackie, of Glen Allen, Chris Bonham and Thomas Bonham, both of Chester. A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Salem Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

CLINGENPEEL, Omer F.

Omer F. (Bill) Clingenpeel, 91, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 13, 2004. He was predeceased by his wife, Rosa V. Clingenpeel. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and was retired from Westinghouse Electric Supply. He is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Kenneth Ayers of Chesterfield, Missouri, and Judith Ann Clingenpeel of Salem; grandchildren, Monica Yates and husband, Bobby, Carla Reynolds and husband, Keith, Melissa Ayers, Jason Ayers and wife, Akiko; great-grandchildren, Mary Frances Yates, Grace Lawson Reynolds, Sophie Elizabeth Ayers, and Charlie Slate Reynolds; and sister, Elizabeth Parcell of Boones Mill. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2004 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. George Stevenson officiating. The interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. LAYMAN, Parker W.

Parker W. Layman, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2004. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was in the paint business for 44 years and served as Executive Vice President of Piedmont Paint Manufacturing Company of Greenville, S.C. He was also past President of the Southern Paint and Varnish Production Club. He served his country during World War II as a paint chemist developing paint for U. S. Navy battle ships. He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey Garnett Layman; parents, Lester and Edna Barnhart Layman; brothers and sisters, Lawrence L. "Boots" Layman, Ray C. Layman, Helen Layman and Ruth Layman Wampler. Surviving family include a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Layman and Charles Phillips; son and daughter-in-law, C. William and Janet M. Layman; grandchildren, Anthony Scott Phillips, Tina Phillips Murphy, William Layman Meacham, and Julia Parker Layman; five great-grandchildren; a long time companion, Stella Hensley and her children, Donna Stradlin and Ted Hensley; and several cousins. Graveside services will be held on Friday, April 16, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem with the Rev. Terry Mabrey officiating. The family received friends on Thursday, April 15, 2004, from 7-9 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital. LINK, Kathleen Vest

Kathleen Vest Link, 67, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 14, 2004. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church and a current member of west Salem Baptist Church. She retired early from Allstate to keep her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Donna Sue; parents, Truman and Dormal Vest; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roscoe and Audrey Link, and son-in-law, Hal Smith. Surviving are her husband, Jerry L. Link; daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Eugene Fortner of Roanoke, Darlene Smith of Salem, and Carolyn and Scott Brandt of Roanoke; grandchildren, Lauren Link, Jeremiah, Leah and Rebekah Brandt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Judy Vest of Check and Michael and Evelyn Vest of Check. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Lotz Salem Chapel. Interment icon will follow in Wilson Family cemetery, Check. Alva Norine Paitsel, 90, of New Castle went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 14, 2004. She is preceded in death by her parents Hiram and Bertie Hutchison; husband James Edward "Ed" Paitsel; and their infant son, James Delbert Paitsel. She is survived by her children, Ruby and Clinton St. Clair, Lucille Huffman and late husband Richard, Shirley Paitsel, Margaret Paitsel, Kenny and Linda Paitsel, Harriet Medley and late husband Wendell, Oneta and Daryl Toler and Diane and Leonard Ray; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; special niece Betty June McMahan; and friend and physician Dr. Gene Godwin. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Grace Assembly of God, Catawba with the Rev. Lorraine Taylor and Mike Bowman officiating. REDDICK, Ralph S.

Ralph S. Reddick, 88, of Roanoke, experienced his transition on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the Virginia Veterans Care Center. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary A. Reddick; grandson, Andr? Hinmon; and son-in-law, Johnnie D. Hinmon. Those left to cherish his memory are daughter, Mary R. Hinmon of Roanoke; granddaughter-in-law, Cheryl Hinmon; great-grandchildren, Crystal and Andr? Hinmon of Landsdown, Pa.; nieces, Hattie Mae Brown and Carrie Louise Hayes; nephew, Samuel Fleming; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Logan; brother-in-law, Mr. Dalton Roberts all of Roanoke; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Hill Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Johnny R. Stone will officiate. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. WELLEFORD, Paul Bailey

Paul Bailey Welleford, PhD, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 in Salem, Va. at the age of 65. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Margaret Ann Shipper Welleford; daughter, Elizabeth Ayn Welleford, PhD, of Richmond, Va.; son, E. Burt Welleford, daughter-in-law, Yasuko Iwatani and granddaughter, Aya Iwatani of Atlanta, Ga. A native of Paducah, Kentucky, Paul was educated at Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., South Western Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, Tennessee State University and received his PhD in Public Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va. Dr. Welleford devoted a 50 year career to church music, serving Baptist churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina, Arkansas and Virginia. Under his direction, choirs performed at state conventions in Texas, South Carolina and Virginia, the Southern Baptist Convention in Philadelphia, Ridgecrest and at prisons in Arkansas and Louisiana. He recently retired from a 22 year ministry at Salem Baptist Church, Salem, Va., where his tireless commitment to the church family exemplified his favorite verse, "Even young people tire and drop out. Young folk in their prime stumble and fall. But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles. They run and don't get tired. They walk and don't lag behind." (Isaiah 40:30-31) A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Salem.

Orville Leonard Ashwell, 76, of Lynchburg and formerly of Bedford County, passed away Saturday, April 10, 1004. Memorial Service Saturday, 11 a.m., Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church. BOHON, William Griffin

William Griffin Bohon, age 72 of Montvale, passed away Sunday, April 11, 2004 in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born June 16, 1931 in Bedford County, a son of the late Layman Griffin Bohon and Frances Marie Graham Bohon. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Bohon Parker. He was a retired welder. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Quarles Bohon; a son and daughter-in-law, W. G., Jr. and Beth Bohon of Montvale; three grandchildren, Mikal Ann Bohon, Jonathan Bohon, both of Montvale, and Joshua Parker of Thaxton; and a great granddaughter, Tayler Lee Bohon; a son-in-law, Dennis Parker of Thaxton. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 2680, N. Canton, Ohio 44720. At Mr. Bohon's request, his body was cremated and there will be no services. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.

James Lee Bond, Sr., 81, of Hardy, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Mae Bond, of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Ninateen (Raymond) Harper, Wirtz, Va., Miss Darnella Bond, Hardy, Va., Miss Fannie B. Bond, Rocky Mount, Va., Mrs. Stella (Jimmy) Dent, Hardy, Va., Mrs. Estell (Raymond) Curtis, Hardy, Va.; six sons, Charlie (Susie) Bond, Hardy, Henry T. Bond, Roanoke, Va., John D. Bond, Roanoke, Va., Joe M. Bond, of the home, Tommy L. Bond, Pulaski, Va., James L. Bond, Jr., of the home; one sister, Mrs. Louise Banks, Madison Heights, Va.; one aunt, Mrs. Loretta Bond, Moneta, Va.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Raymond Harper, 123 Sandlewood Road, Wirtz, Va. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church, Apostolic faith, with Elder George Bond officiating. Buel Maitland Bowling, 95, of Ferrum died April 15, 2004 in the local hospital. He was a charter member of the Ferrum Lions Club, a longtime active member of St. James United Methodist Church, was a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 44 years and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, James L. and Toke Thomas Bowling; a son, Gary Bowling; brothers and sisters, Chester Bowling, Donnie Shively, Thurley Ingram, Harry Bowling, Lovelene Hensley, Nora Martin, and Edward Bowling. Surviving are his wife, Ethel Edwards Bowling; his daughters and sons-in-law, Bettie and Robert Wilson, Deanne and Steve Lloyd, Dale and Donald Moore, Dawn Bowling; his son, Larry Bowling; daughter-in-law Joyce Bowling; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Thomason, Victoria Kirby; one brother, Ottis Bowling and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wesley J. Nelson and the Rev. Liz Lazenby officiating. DIVERS, Nancy Lee Martin

Nancy Lee Martin Divers, 72, of Rocky Mount, is now asleep in Jesus, from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Wednesday April 14, 2004. She was a member of Camp Branch Primitive Baptist Church. A devoted and loving wife for over 50 years, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Howard Divers and her father, James Andrew Martin. Surviving are her mother, Nancy Plybon Voorhees of Rocky Mount; her brother and sister-in-law, James G. Haynes and wife, Ann, of Roanoke; a very special friend, Betty Manning; several nephews, nieces and a wonderful extended family of friends whose love, devotion and prayers have made this journey through life a happy one. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the doctors, staff and personnel of CSICU at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, whose dedication and love have been exemplary. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Flora Funeral Chapel with Elder Alan Terry officiating. Interment icon will follow in Franklin Memorial Park.
