Josephine Joy Drewry, 92, formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 15, 2004. She was the wife of the late Thurman Drewry. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church for many years. She is survived by one step-daughter, Donna Cowling of Roanoke; two step-grandchildren, Irvin Atkins of Roanoke, and Laurie Gearheart-Coles of Roanoke; three step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edward Joy of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2004 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel, Brookneal with interment to follow at 3 p.m. in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem.

GRAVES, Terry Lynn

Terry Lynn Graves, 50, of Roanoke, peacefully departed this world in the company of close family on May 18, 2006. Terry was an employee of Kroger Company for over 20 years. He also spent 12 years working alongside his parents at the Graves family business, Valley Marine Center. When not working, Terry spent much of his time in his favorite place, the great outdoors. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, and fishing every chance he got. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Toney Graves. Terry is survived by his wife and best friend, Gail Stevens Graves of Roanoke; daughters, Celia Graves McAllister and Teri Lyne Graves of Botetourt; grandsons, William and Lennon McAllister; father and stepmother, Eddie Joe Graves, Sr. and Roswitha Graves of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Eddie Joe Graves Jr.; sister in-law, Sandy Graves; and nephew, Danny Graves of Roanoke; life long "brother", Jeff Sain and wife, Sharon; and special K-9 companion, Gracie. The family wishes to thank all of the friends and family who were there in the time of need, as well as Yvette Kerr, friends, and volunteers from Good Samaritan Hospice. Suzann Nicole Morgan, 25, of Salem, passed away May 18, 2006. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Kimberly and Wayne Sweeney of Salem; father, James Morgan, Jr. of McHenry, Illinois; daughter, Gwendalyn Sutphin of Salem; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John Plaine of Taneytown, Md.; grandmother, Shirley Gouge of Union Bridge, Md.; brother, Jeffrey Morgan of Taneytown, Md.; sister, Ashley Morgan of Evanston, Illinois; and nephew, Jaden Morgan of Taneytown, Md. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2006 at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. A funeral service and burial will be held in Taneytown, MD at a later date. PATTON, Onis H.

Onis H. (Pat) Patton, 97, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Griffith Patton and his sisters, Irma Patton, Louise Rowan, and Ina Tingle. Mr. Patton was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class. Until earlier this year, Mr. Patton was active in various bridge clubs, playing each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. He retired from Nelson Roanoke Hardware. Surviving are his sons, Gerald W. Patton and wife Donna of Vinton, Donald W. Patton of Roanoke; grandchildren, Eric W. Patton, Laura M. Collisi and husband Sean, Chad Patton and wife Lynne, Angie Poe and husband Matt; great-grandchildren, Ryan Poe, Bryce and Joshua Patton and Holly Collisi; brother, Melvin Patton of Stephens City, Md.; and sister, Cleo Johns of Philadelphia, Penn. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Mr. Patton's loyal and devoted neighbors for their many acts of kindness. PHILLIPS, Georgia Roberts

Georgia Roberts Phillips, 80, of Roanoke, died early Friday at her home in Roanoke, May 19, 2006. Born January 19, 1926 in Marshall, N.C., she grew up and went to high school in Welsh, W.Va., then lived most of her working life in Roanoke, Va. She worked and retired from the Davis H. Elliott Electrical Contractors where she prepared the weekly payroll for over 30 years and a longtime member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. She loved to read, knit and sew and had a special way of touching everyone she met and will be remembered by many. She was preceded in death of beloved husband, Howard James (Jack) Phillips, Sr. Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline Spoon and husband, Marshall; son; James Phillips and wife, Mary Beth; sisters, Norma Smith and Molly McGrath and husband, Charles; and four grandchildren, Jaimie Phillips, Jessica Phillips, Simon Spoon and wife, Lee, and Ryan Spoon; great-granddaughters, Haven and Saige Spoon. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kirk Lashley officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel.

STIFF, Jeffrey Byron

Jeffrey Byron Stiff, 42, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Friday May 19, 2006 as the result of an automobile accident. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and great-grandparents, Frank Lucas and Minnie H. and Byron Austin Porterfield and Paternal grandparents Virgie Martin and Atlee P. Stiff. Mr. Stiff was a former member of Clearbrook Rescue Squad, a lifelong member of Sherry Memorial Christian Church and also attended Penn Forest Christian Church. He served as an authorized representative of the Roanoke County Voting and Registration Committee and was an avid racing fan. He graduated from Cave Spring High School in 1982 where he was a member of the Cross Country and wrestling teams. He attended Va. Western Community College and was a 1998 graduate of Dominion Business College. He is survived by his parents Curtis James and Joyce Lucas Stiff, Roanoke; maternal grandmother, Kathleen Porterfield Lucas; step-grandmother, Louise W. Stiff, paternal uncles, Norris and Ronnie Stiff, Newport; special cousins, Janice Porterfield Hypes and Jimmie Hypes; special friend, John Vaught who was always there for Jeff through the good times and the bad; and Nipster the cat. Jeff was a loving, free hearted and kind individual who always helped anyone in need. He loved his family and loved the Lord. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's South Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted 11am Monday from Sherry Memorial Christian Church in Newport. Doris L. Wheeler, 97, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006. Mrs. Wheeler was a native of Roanoke, Va. and was a lifetime member of Christ Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver G. and Carrie Watkins Lane. Seven brothers and sisters; and two sons, John and Ronald Morrow, also preceded her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Barbara Morrow; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; plus two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2006 at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor David Skole and the Rev. Dr. William Kinser officiating. Gordon Garland Alley, 83, of Boones Mill, died on Wednesday, May 17, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Justina A. Alley. He was a member of Red Valley United Methodist Church Men's Group, a retired U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Guadalcanal and a member of Burnt Chimney Ruritan Club. Surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Bob Weinhold of Boones Mill and Barbara and Bill Davis of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren, Brian Hale and wife, Kimberly, Michael Hale and wife, Melissa, Laura Wilhelm and husband, Kevin, James Kualii and wife, Candace, Christopher Kualii and Shannon Kualii; great-grandchildren, Nicole Parson, Bryce, Amber, Emily, and William Hale, Emory Kualii, Christina Kualii and Jaden Trinh; nieces, Yvonne Barch of Cleveland, Tenn. and Joann Day of Gary, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Annie Spichek and husband, Nick of Roanoke; and beloved friends, Bernie and Sherry Stevenson. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 22, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Red Valley United Methodist Church, 30 Red Valley Road, Boones Mill, Va., where services will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. BOWLES, J. Carlton

J. Carlton Bowles, 84, of Rocky Mount, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 15, 1922 in the Scruggs community of Franklin County. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Bowles and Ora Hubbard Bowles; brother, Shannon H. Bowles; half brothers, Clyde, Alonza, and Raymond Bowles; half sisters, Ola Brown, Alma Moran, Vivian Carter, and Gracie Dillon. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Louise H. Bowles; daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda Bowles LaPrade and husband, Bob of Johnson City, Tennessee, Mary Lynn Bowles Fothergill and husband, Bobby of Roanoke, Virginia; beloved grandchildren, Emma Claire and Ellen Bradley LaPrade, Erin Louise and Bryce Carlton Fothergill; beloved stepgrandson, Greyland Lee LaPrade; a sister, Chappie Bowles Firebaugh; sisters-in-law, Judy Chitwood Hodges, Imogene McDaniel Bowles; a brother-in-law, James Dallas Hodges and his wife, Virginia Drewry Hodges, all of Rocky Mount; nieces and nephews. He served with the Army's 79th Division in the European Theatre during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany. He retired from E.I.DuPont in Martinsville after 37 years of service. He was a longtime member of Rocky Mount Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) having served as a Deacon, Greeter, and member of the Property Committee and Board. "Poppy" was always a sharp dressed man who took great pride in his perfectly manicured lawn and immaculate cars. He was an avid gardener and landscaper who loved Nascar racing, spending time with his grandchildren, and traveling. The family would like to express their deep love and appreciation to Karen Tosh, R.N., devoted hospice nurse and Kitty Ruby, C.N.A. In addition, they would like to thank Drs. THOMASON, Clyde E.

Clyde E. Thomason, 84, of Hardy, formerly of Vinton, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 18, 2006 and is now entered into his Heavenly home. He was a member of White Rock Baptist Church, Vinton Masonic Lodge #204, Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Temple Shrine. He was also a member of HH MacKenzie DAV Chapter #3, VFW Post #4522, Vinton American Legion Post #80, Vinton Moose Lodge #1121. He served in the Army during World War II and received a Bronze Star and retired from US Steel and was a member of the Steel Works Organization of Active Retirees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian St.Clair Thomason; two brothers, Carl D. and Alexander Thomason; four stepsisters, Clara Dillon, Judy Scott, Opal Cook, and Dotsie Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Louise Thomason; stepdaughters, Judy and husband, Mark Johnson, Sandy and husband, Chris Foster; grandchildren, Sara, Emily, Leah and Matthew; sister, Christine Slough; half brother, Melvin Doc Dillon; half sisters, Melva Smith, Barbara Boussman, Dearl Holland; stepbrother, Joseph Dillon; stepsister, Tootsie Terrell. The family offers thanks and gratitude to the Hardy Rescue Squad and Emergency Staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mae Frances Wood, 77, of Bedford, passed away May 20, 2006 in Autumn Care of Altavista. She was born in Bedford County on November 7, 1928, a daughter of the late Willie G. Skinnell and May Hackworth Skinnell. She was retired from Moneta Dress Factory and was a member of Mentow Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Everett R. Wood, Sr.; three daughters and their husbands, Dianne W. and Silas Lawhorn, Bedford, Linda W. and Glenn Carter, Hurt, Janice W. and Wayne Moody, Montvale; one son and his wife, Everett R. "Rocky" Wood, Jr. and Linda, Evington; three sisters, Helen Lula Overstreet and Louise Carwile, both of Bedford, Rachel Seay, Altavista; one brother, Andrew Skinnell, Lynchburg; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, by the Rev. Tim Mathia, with interment in Virginia Memorial Park. AKERS, Elsie Reed

Elsie (Effie) Reed Akers, 101, of Floyd, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006. She was born May 28, 1904, and was nine days from her 102nd birthday at the time of her death. Mrs. Akers was a member of the Floyd Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Andrew J. Akers, her son, the late Hobert Akers, and her son-in-law, the late Freeman Reed. Surviving are her daughter, Eleanor Akers Reed, Floyd; her daughter-in-law, Gladys Akers, W. Va.; ten grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2006 at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. C.E. Mannon and Mr. Larry Phillips officiating. Interment icon will follow at Pleasant Valley cemetery. Friends may call Sunday after 4 p.m. where the family will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Special thanks to her daughter, Eleanor Akers Reed, for being her personal caregiver and for being by her side for many years until the end. HALE, Irene Blankenship

Irene Blankenship Hale, 87, of Countryside Drive in Narrows departed this life to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from the loving care of her family at her home Friday evening May 19, 2006. Born at Narrows on September 4, 1918 she was a daughter of the late Edward Lowman and Sallybelle King Blankenship. A beloved Christian wife, mother, and grandmother she was a member of North Narrows Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mason W. Hale, Sr.; two sons, Daniel Woodrum Hale and Dickie Ray Hale; a sister, Macie Williams and four brothers, Marvin, Clifton, Clarence, and Arby Blankenship. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Mason W. Hale, Jr. and Mickey J. Hale both of Narrows; a daughter, Annetta C. Hale of Narrows; a brother, Edward Eugene Blankenship and his wife Lois of Roanoke; three sisters, Verena Vaughan of Richmond, Inez M. Smith and Roxie E. Fleeman both of Narrows; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with Pastor Tommy Ramsey and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Mason Hale cemetery at Narrows. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m..

James Wilton Page, Jr., 59, of Christiansburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 19, 2006 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wilton Page, Sr. and Lucille Watkins Page. He is survived by his wife, Karleen Evans Page; son and daughter-in-law, James Derek and Jamie Page, Atlanta, Ga.; stepchildren, Laura Elizabeth Wickham and fiancée Joey Sean Stogner, Seth Thomas Wickham; grandchildren, Joey Sean Stogner, Jr. (J.J.), Justin Thomas Stogner; brothers-in-law, Mike Evans and wife Linda, Rick Evans; aunts and uncles, Wilbert and Merleen Page, Frank and Betty Page; cousin, Martha Page. SUMNER, Neva Argabright Walton

Neva Argabright Walton Sumner, 86, of Roanoke, and formerly of Christiansburg, died Thursday, May 18, 2006. Mrs. Sumner worked for 32 years in the office of Blue Ridge Manufacturing and Imperial Reading Manufacturing. She was instrumental in organizing the Christiansburg Fire Departments Ladies Auxiliary in 1958 and was the first president. She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and for over 50 years a member of the Eastern Star. After moving to Roanoke she became an active member of North Roanoke Baptist Church and the Dorcus Sunday school Class. Mrs. Sumner was a resident of Friendship Manor Retirement Community where she was involved with many activates. The daughter to the late James S. Argabright and Lorena Argabright Martin, she was also preceded in death by her husbands, Carnice C. "Beans" Walton, and Frank D. Sumner; brother, James R. Argabright; and her twin sister, Nena A. Epperly. She is survived by her three nephews, James W. Epperly of Christiansburg, Larry A. Epperly of Gahanna, Ohio, Eugene and Rene Argabright, Yorktown, Va.; one niece, Sally G. Archibald of Grove City, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Josephine Argabright of Yorktown, Va.; and a host of friends from Friendship Manor in Roanoke. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 21, 2006 at The Horne Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. An Eastern Star service will be held at 6 p.m. in the chapel by McDaniel Chapter 47 OES.
