WILLIAMS, William G.

Wm. G. (Bill) Williams, passed from this life, Tuesday, December 14, 2004. Born in Chilhowie, Virginia to the late John and Nannie Lou Hurt Williams. After graduating from Chilhowie High School he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater making multiple landings including Bouganville and Guam. He later served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea participating in the Inchan Landing and the recapture of Seoul. He fought on the Chosin Reservoir and later joined the survivors in founding the Association of the Chosin Few. After 24 years of service he retired from the United States Marine Corp at the Rank of Captain. After returning to Marion, he co-founded the H.S. Williams Company and led as the company's corporate vice-president for many years. Mr. Williams was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church and had served as a Trustee and in other capacities. For a time he served as a boy scout leader. He loved the outdoors, and his many interests included fishing, hunting, golfing, tennis, and gardening. His warm personality will be missed by all who knew him. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Ann Krouse, Eleanor, Alvis, Cotton, and Harry Williams. He is survived by his wife, Susan Hardin Williams; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Weakley of Louisville, Kentucky and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hardin of Willisburg, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, Jim B. Hurt of Tazewell, Virginia. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, December 16, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Marion, Virginia with Rev. Jeff Lambert and Rev. Kim Goddard officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Lutheran Church cemetery, Chilhowie, Virginia. The Family will receive friends Thursday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com. BALLENGEE, Anna Viola Lawhorn Hall

Anna Viola Lawhorn Hall Ballengee, 86, of Ballard, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va. Born April 28, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Hamp and Millie Humphreys Lawhorn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Clarence E. Hall and C.C. "Kit" Ballengee; three sisters; three brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; her daughter, Nancy and husband, Bill Brewer; and daughter-in-law, Jenny Powell Hall. She is survived by one daughter, Gay Whitenack of Rich Creek, Va.; two sons, Larry M. Hall and wife, Anna (Sue) of Peterstown, W.Va., and Clarence Austin Hall of Dublin, Va.; stepdaughter, Ellen Johnson and husband, Tom; stepson, Edwin Ballengee and wife, Mary Jo, all of Peterstown, W.Va.; one brother, Ralph Lawhorn of Lindside, W.Va.; three sisters, Marie Lawhorn, Mable Lephew, Betty Noonkester and husband, James, all of Ballard, W.Va; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, W.Va. with Pastor David Spencer and Evangelist Roger Hatfield officiating. FINNEY, William Leland

William Leland Finney, Lt. Col., USAF (Retired), 87, of Tempe, Ariz., and formerly of Franklin County, passed away on December 6, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on May 13, 1917, attended Cleveland and Glade Hill elementary schools, Ferrum preparatory school, and graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1934. In 1938, he received his degree from Virginia Polytechnical Institute. While there he was a member of the Corps. After college he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Arizona, and then enlisted and became an officer in the Army Air Corps. After a distinguished military career of 30 years in the USAF, including service in England during World War II, he retired to Tempe, Ariz., in 1968. His second career was as the assistant manager of Desert Schools Federal Credit Union in Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland Stanford and Nettie Ward (Walker) Finney; and his brothers, Edsel and Fletcher Finney. His survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Virginia; his daughters, Annette Finney of Austin, Texas, Mary Kinney (Craig); and his beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Kinney, all of Leawood, Kan. William, the oldest of five boys, is survived by two brothers, Ward and Willard Finney of Rocky Mount, Virginia. He was dearly loved and respected by his 14 nieces and nephews and their families. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to either The American Cancer Society or Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted from Vaughn Chapel at Ferrum College, 2 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004 with Chaplain Peter Sniffin and Mr. Craig G. Kinney officiating. Interment icon with full military honors will follow in the Finney Family cemetery in Penhook. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Vaughn Chapel. BESS, Jack Gilman

Jack Gilman Bess, 70, of Boones Mill, formerly of Roanoke, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife and children on Friday, April 15, 2005. He was born in Allegheny County on January 15, 1935, and is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret Ann Bess (nee Chaney); two sons, Robert Bess of Boones Mill and David Bess and wife Lisa (nee Boothe) of Roanoke; three very special grandchildren, Brandon Bess, Spencer Bess, and Brooke Bess, all of Roanoke; sister, Mary Helen Metz and husband Harry of Charlotte, N.C.; mother-in-law, Margaret Chaney of Roanoke; brother-in-law, Jimmy Chaney and his wife Jennifer (nee Self) of Salem; sister-in-law, Linda Palmer of Roanoke; and daughter-in-law, Janet D. Stacy of Roanoke. Jack served for many years as a Sargent in the 116th Infantry, Virginia National Guard. He was retired from a 40 year career as a civil engineer, the last 29 years of which he owned and operated his own business: Jack G. Bess, Land Surveyor, servicing the Roanoke area of Southwest Virginia with distinction. Jack was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish up until the point that a rare form of muscular dystrophy limited his activities. Even then he was well-known for enthusiastically providing the means for friends and family to pursue these activities on his own land in Franklin County, the farm he called "Solitude." His generosity and love of archeology also led to his donation of an historic structure on his property to Virginia's Explore Project. The Wray "Crib Barn" will be well-known to visitors of that attraction as the facility used to house the project's various livestock. Jack will be sorely missed by family, friends and associates... his kind are rare to this Earth. Visitation will be held in Roanoke at Oakey's North Chapel on Sunday, April 17, 2005 from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., with grave side services on Monday 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens on Airport Road. It is the heartfelt wish of the family that in leu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, Va. 24003-0554) and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (26 15th St., SW Roanoke, Va. 24016).

UMBARGER, Bonnie Ann

Bonnie Ann Umbarger, 70, of Bastian, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield, W.Va. She was born September 28, 1934 in Bland County, Va., the daughter of the late Alva Myrtle Seabolt and James Garland Cassell. She was of the Methodist faith and was a faithful member of the Hunting Camp Community. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Billy R. Umbarger, Sr.; one daughter, Deloras Gregory and husband, C.D. of Bastian; three sons, Billy (Randy) Umbarger, Jr. and wife, Phyllis of Bland, Tommy R. Umbarger and wife, Karen, of Bastian, and Gerald W. Umbarger of Bastian; one brother, James Alva Cassell of De Land, Florida; one sister, Betty Sue Cassell, address unknown; five grandchildren, James Allen Umbarger, Sarah Mae Wells, Christopher Mark Gregory, Bethany Leigh'an Gregory, Jonathan Travis Umbarger; and two great-grandchildren, Savanah Langley and Grace K. Umbarger. Funeral services will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh, the Rev. Alan Ashworth, and the Rev. Ray Davis officiating. Interment icon will be Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Morning Star cemetery, Bland. DAVID, Lala Blair

Lala Blair David, 90, of Gretna, died Thursday, April 14, 2005 and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born August 30, 1914 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Suter A. Blair and Ida Cook Blair. She was married to the late W. Woodrow David. She was also predeceased by a son, Woodrow David, Jr. and fourteen brothers and sisters. She was the last member of her generation. Mrs. David was a member of Liberty Christian Church for 78 years and was a retired employee of the Pittsylvania County School System. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, E.J. and Virginia David of Gretna; a daughter, Linda D. Mills of Salem; three grandchildren, Cindy White of Shreveport, La., Randy David of Shreveport, La., and Scott David of Charlotte, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Madison David; three great-grandsons, Cody David, Kyle David and Byron Ramos. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, Minister and the Rev. Neville Shelton. Burial will follow in Liberty Memorial cemetery. HARRIS, Otha Morton Sr.

Otha Morton Harris, Sr. 84, of Martinsville, Va., died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born April 4, 1921, in the Irisburg community of Henry County, Va., he was the son of D. Harmon Harris and Nona Holland Harris, both deceased. Mr. Harris was a graduate of Axton High School and Perry Business School. In 1985 he retired from E.I. DuPont with 41 years service, where he worked as a Purchasing Agent. He was a long-time member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church where he had served as Sunday school teacher, church school superintendent, deacon and elder. Mr. Harris was also a former vice-president of the AARP Chapter #317. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Flora Mell Harris; three brothers, Milton Edwin Harris, Steven Holland Harris and Duluth Harmon Harris; and sister, Christine A. Harris. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Martha Nelson Harris; children, Kerrie Harris Scheetz and her husband, Jonathan D. Scheetz, II., Of Chesapeake, Va., Timothy E. Harris of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. O. Morton Harris, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Sue Lowcock Harris, of Cumberland, Md.; grandchildren, David Orion Scheetz of Chesapeake, Va., Matthew Carl Harris and Kelley Leanne Harris, both of Norfolk, Va.; and daughter-in-law, Doris A. Harris of Norfolk, Va. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William E. Christian officiating. COLLINS, John Francis Jr.

John Francis Collins, Jr., 72, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, April 14, 2005 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Mr. Collins was born on October 4, 1932 in New Hampshire and was a son of the late John Francis Collins, Sr. and Katherine Hurley Collins. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Scott Collins. Mr. Collins is survived by three children, Katheryne C. Marlatt of Buena Vista, Sean Collins of New York and Dennis Collins of Virginia; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2005 at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. W. David Bain officiating. CULOTTA, Betty Wyatt

Betty Wyatt Culotta, 73, of Route 1, Wild Cat School Road, Millboro, Virginia, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at her residence. She was born on September 18, 1931 in Newport News, Virginia. Betty graduated from Clifton Forge High School in 1949 and went on to attend Randolph-Macon Woman's College and obtained her Masters Degree from the University of Maryland. Betty began her career as a teacher in 1953 in Montgomery County, Maryland. Her successes in the classroom lead to an appointment as school librarian. When she began her work as school librarian, she was one of 12 librarians in the county. When she retired in 1983, she supervised 300 librarians in Montgomery County. During her 30 year career, Betty served as President of the Montgomery County Education Association and as Chairman of the Legislative Committee for the Maryland State Teachers Association. Betty retired in 1983 to Bath County, Virginia to the home she and her parents loved in Millboro. During retirement, Betty enjoyed a rich and busy life as what she liked to call a "professional volunteer." She worked with the local food pantry, delivered "Meals on Wheels," and participated in the Bath County Historical Society. Betty enjoyed fund raising activities for Garth Newel Music Center. She was a member and docent volunteer for the Bath County Art Association. She joined the Millboro Ruritan Club and served as Vice President and President. Having been active with the Bath unit of the American Cancer Society since 1985, serving as Vice President and President, Betty enjoyed adapting the ACS signature fund raising event, "Relay for Life," to Bath County in 1997. In retirement, Betty retained her lifelong enthusiasm for library work and education. She served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rockbridge Regional Library. She helped form the Rockbridge Regional Library Foundation as a fund raising arm for endowment and innovation. In 1993, she was named as "Outstanding Trustee in the Commonwealth" by the Virginia Library Association. She was elected to the Bath County School Board and served with distinction as Chairman and Vice Chairman from 1992 1995. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Gwaltney Ranson in 1984; and her father, Emmett Ranson in 1990; and by other loving relatives and friends. She is survived by her nieces, Betty (and Paul) Herbert of Charlotte, N.C. and Cathy Carter of Newport News, Va.; and by her dedicated friends Frank and Ella Rexrode of Warm Springs, Va.; as well as many other relatives and friends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Betty's memory to the American Cancer Society, the Bath County Public Library or the Millboro Ruritan Scholarship Fund. A private interment is planned at Windy Cove cemetery in Millboro with family only attending. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Nicely Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

PARCELL, Evelyn Patterson

Evelyn Patterson (Pat) Parcell, 81, of Staffordsville, went to be with her Heavenly Father, Saviour Jesus Christ and her loving family, from Roanoke Memorial Hospital on Thursday, April 14, 2005. She was born August 23, 1923 at Belen Mississippi, the daughter of the late Agnes Allene Ekerd and Robert Jasper Patterson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Patterson. She was a Navy nurse veteran of World War II and a member of the Narrows American Legion Post #68. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clayton E. Parcell, Sr.; one son, Clayton (Corky) Parcell, Jr. of Pearisburg; one daughter, Olivia Reed and husband, Darrell of Radford; one brother, Walter W. Patterson of Sweetwater, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Shawn Parcell of Riner, Lee Capozzi of Riner, Corey Shannon Reed and wife Tanoe of Roanoke, Natashia Reed of Roanoke, Celsea Reed of Radford; four great-grandchildren, Ashley and Adriel Reed of Draper, Royce Foley of Roanoke, Isabella Capozzi of Riner; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate with the Rev. John Hash and the Rev. Jeff Rata officiating. Carl Arthur Schmidt, 88, (formerly of Christiansburg and Pulaski), died Monday in Gettysburg, Pa. following an extended illness. Friends may visit from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service at the church.
