Graham E. Boysen

Graham Eugene Boysen, 65, of Greene County, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at a local hospital.

Born Sept. 5, 1936, in Nebraska, he was the son of the late Fred and Velma Husband Boysen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha S. Boysen.

He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 27 years of service.

Survivors include his daughter, Wanda L. Durham of Stanardsville; a sister, Roberta; three grandchildren, Angelique Glasscock, David Barcinas, both of Stanardsville, and James Donahue of Gordonsville; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon on the Family Farm.

Edna F. Cohen

Edna F. Cohen of Lake Oswego, Ore. passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, from complications due to diabetes.

Edna was born on March 14, 1916, in Scarsboro, W.Va.

Edna married Mac Cohen, owner of Kaufman's Mens Store (now Williams Book Store) in 1937. They lived in Charlottesville until 1967, when they moved to Sherman Oaks, Calif. Edna moved to Lake Oswego, Ore., in 1989.

Edna was predeceased by Mac (Aug. of 1980) and her oldest daughter, Ellen (March of 1972).

She is survived by her youngest daughter, Susan Noack of Portland, Ore.; and her two children, Lindsay and Andrew, both of Portland, Ore.; Ellen's children, Jennifer Steber of Montreal, Canada and Matthew Kresch of San Francisco; and five great-grandchildren.

Edna left a wonderful legacy to her family of celebrating the good in life joyously, enduring the not so good quietly, and all with tremendous grace, dignity and southern charm.

According to Edna's wishes, there was no service and she will be buried in Palo Alto, Calif., with Mac.

If you so choose, contributions to the American Diabetes Association in Edna's memory will be appreciated.

Randolph Crowder Sr.

A funeral service for Randolph Meredith Crowder Sr. will be conducted at 11 a.m. this morning in the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating. Interment icon will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Lucile Fizer Gooch

Lucile Beverly Fizer Gooch, 80, of Troy, died Sunday, July 21, 2002. She was born June 2, 1922, in Bedford, the daughter of the late Odell and Henrietta Fizer.

She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a BA in Library Science, and received her Masters degree from the University of Virginia.

She worked as a librarian for Albemarle County Schools and was the media coordinator for Fluvanna County Schools for 28 years.

She was a member of the professional educator's society, Delta Kappa Gamma, past president of the Fluvanna County Library Board, past president of the Fluvanna Arts Council, and a member of many other community service organizations.

She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dr. Edwin O. Gooch; her children, Stephen and his wife Lissa Gooch, Cheryl and her husband, David Gilliam, John and his wife, Ann Gooch; and seven grandchildren, Megan, Matt, Sarah, and Josh Gooch, and Beth, Charlie, and Lee Gilliam.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Hunter officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the Beaver Dam Baptist Church Building Fund, 1794 Richmond Rd., Troy.

Frances C. Holland

Frances Coleman Holland, 88, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Jacksonville, Fla., to the late William and Frances Coleman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James T. Adams of The Plains; and her brother, William Emmet Coleman of Miami, Fla.

Mrs. Holland married Henry S. Holland III on March 28, 1987, and the Hollands had resided in Charlottesville the entire 15 years of their marriage. The Hollands had a happy and loving marriage and enjoyed travel, entertaining, and family.

Mrs. Holland moved to The Plains in 1938. She was married to James T. Adams for 38 years until his death.

Mrs. Holland was known for her kind and gentle nature, her steadfast character, and her tremendous sense of dignity, pride, loyalty, and faith. She was able to maintain these qualities in spite of complete blindness, during the last five years of her life. Her resolve and strength will continue to be admired by her family and friends.

Mrs. Holland's memory will be cherished and she will be deeply missed by Henry Holland III and his family; the Coleman families; and her dear friends in The Plains, Warrenton, Upperville, Charlottesville, and other points too many to list.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 7599 Rockfish Gap TWP, Greenwood.

Mr. Holland will receive friends following the service at his home, 2524 Free Union Rd., Charlottesville.

Deloris T. Jackson

Deloris Thompson Jackson, 64, of Louisa, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

She was the daughter of the late John B. and Rosa Willis Thompson.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, Harold L. Jackson; four sons, Gregory Jones Sr., Marcus Thompson, Derrick Thompson, and Errick Thompson, all of Louisa; one daughter, Karen Clark of Louisa; one brother, Charles Thompson of Charlottesville; one sister, Earline Hembry of Louisa; three stepsons, Robert Washington and Randy Taliferro, both of Fluvanna, and Elvis Vest of Philadelphia; three stepdaughters, Janice Gallory and Loretta Whalen, both of Louisa, and Louise Vest of Philadelphia; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon at Wayland Baptist Church with the Rev. Frances Lewis officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

She will lie in state from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening.

Services of comfort are entrusted to the staff of McClenny Funeral Services Inc. R.B. and Doris McClenny, Morticians.

Bertie L. Meadows

Bertie Lee Meadows, 71, of Gordonsville, died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at her home.

Born April 24, 1931, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Deane Meadows. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Reba Andriesse; a brother, Tilman Meadows; and a son, Morgan Breeden.

She was retired from the Pentagon.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Kelly and Bonnie Breeden, both of Ruckersville; four great-grandchildren, Candace Thomas, Emory L. Morris, Rachael Pugh, and Morgan Pugh; two sisters, Victoria Painter and Lena Sheppard; and a brother, Elwood Meadows.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday morning in Ruckersville cemetery with the Rev. Gayle Ritchie officiating.

William E. Morris

William Everette Morris, 80, of Rochelle, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002.

Mr. Morris was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Aylor, the son of the late John Thomas Morris and Ethel Aylor Morris.

Mr. Morris was an avid farmer and especially enjoyed raising livestock, fishing, and going on short trips. William loved being around his friends and family.

He had a wonderful personality and witty sense of humor and will be greatly missed. William especially liked outdoor activities and television, when he couldn't get outside.

Mr. Morris is survived by two sisters, Mary Morris of Rochelle and Elsie Warlitner of Harrisonburg, two nieces and a nephew.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Methodist Church cemetery in Aylor.

Billy L. Smith

Billy Lee Smith, 46, of Buckingham County, departed this life Monday, July 22, 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin Edward Smith and Lila Marie Moyer Smith; and a special aunt, Mabel Moyer.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Jean Smith; two sons, James Lee Smith and his wife, Diana, and Charles Daniel Smith and his wife, Stephanie, all of Buckingham County; two brothers, Robert Smith and his wife, Martha, of Schuyler, and Charles E. Smith of Oklahoma; two sisters, Deborah Smith of Charlottesville and Terry Anderson of Virginia Beach; Tommy F. Robb and Gene Farley, who Billy considered to be like sons; his aunt, Darlene Craig; three grandchildren, Dustin, Sophia, and Ashley Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was the owner of B.L. Smith Hauling in Glenmore and was formerly employed for 27 years at B.F.I.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, with the Rev. George E. Reynolds officiating.

Interment will follow in Scottsville cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Leonard Dale Wagner

Leonard Dale Wagner, 41, died Friday, July 19, 2002. He was a native of Newport News and was a resident of Dover, Del.

Mr. Wagner was employed by at Dover AFB as an environmental engineer in the civil engineering Sq. He was a graduate of VMI Class of 1982.

Survivors include his parents, Betty Eubanks Wagner and Leonard Archer Wagner of Williamsburg; his sister, Susan Wagner McLaughlin and her husband, J., of Palmyra; his aunt, Julia Tweed and her family of Shelby, N.C.; two uncles, Dale Eubank and his family of Concord, N.C. and Glenn Eubanks and his family of Rockingham, N.C.; and several cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Peninsula Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon in Olive Branch cemetery, Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Virginia Military Institute Alumni Association of Lexington, Va.

Suzanne L. Whitehurst

Suzanne Langhorne Whitehurst passed away Saturday morning, July 20, 2002. Suzanne was the daughter of the late Caryetta Saunders and Chiswell Dabney Langhorne.

Suzanne spent her childhood years near Keene in Southern Albemarle. She graduated from St. Anne's School and went on to study at Mary Washington College. Suzanne was passionate about socializing with friends and family, playing bridge and tennis, and caring for her children.

Sue was the mother of two sons; Stewart R. Whitehurst III and William L. Whitehurst.

Among those who will miss her deeply are her two sons; two grand children, Makayla and Witt; two nephews, Steve and Dabney; and her many dear friends and extended family.

Suzanne was blessed with her charm and grace, her quiet courage, and her lovely spirit.

There will be no formal service but there will be a gathering and a celebration of her life and of the love that she shared so generously. The gathering will be at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Christ Church Glendower.

We are planning a picnic so feel free to bring a cooler and/or anything to make yourself comfortable. We hope to share fond memories, enjoy each other's company, and wish for the wellbeing of a special soul.

In lieu of any flowers, please make a donation to a charity that Sue supported; Hospice of the Piedmont.
