Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

William Earl Wood

William Earl Wood, M.D., psychiatrist and longtime resident of Anderson, S.C., died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home, Anderson, S.C.

Dr. Wood was born and raised in Charlottesville, the son of the late Robert S. and Edna Hall Wood. He was a graduate of Lane High School, Charlottesville, where he met his late wife, Marie Lucas Robertson. He served the U.S. Army Eleventh Airborne Division during the occupation of Japan, married , worked in the grocery business with his father, and had four children, before returning to the University of Virginia for college and medical school.

Graduating from medical school in 1963, he moved his family to Augusta, Ga., for his four years of internship and residency. Having become a psychiatrist, he moved his family to Milledgeville, Ga., where he worked at the state hospital. Then, in 1969, the family relocated to Anderson, S.C., as director of the Tricounty Mental Health Clinic. He later went into private practice before returning to work for the state of South Carolina.

Dr. Wood is survived by four children, Sydney Siverteen of Alpharetta, Ga., Emilee Hamrick of Gaffney, S.C., LTC William E. Wood Jr., of Cary, N.C., and Thomas L. Wood of Portsmouth, R.I., and six grandchildren, Elliot and Sarah Hamrick, Elizabeth and Emily Siverteen, and Olivia and Ruth Wood.

Private services will be held in Oakwood cemetery in Charlottesville.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Earl J. Cobey

Col. Earl J. Cobey, 84, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Colonnades.

Born April 14, 1918, in Riverdale, Md., he was the son of the late Earl S. and Harriett Van Buskirk Cobey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor K. Cobey.

He served in World War II, the Korean, and Vietnam Wars, where he rose from private to Colonel after 30 years. He graduated from the University of Maryland and received his Masters of Business Administration from Harvard. He retired from Xerox Corp. after 13 years of employment and as manager of real estate and facilities for the Mid-Atlantic Region. He was a volunteer at the Senior Center, the Alzheimer's Association, and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Anne Cobey of Charlottesville, and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Erin Potter, both of Charlottesville.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug., 26, 2002, at the Fort Myers Chapel at Arlington National cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Those who wish may make contributions to the American Lung Association, 39 South Gate Court, Suite 102, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801, or the Alzheimer's Association Charlottesville-Piedmont Chapter, P.O. Box 4634, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

The family wishes to thank the staff and his friends at the Colonnades for the care they have shown.

James M. Dennis Jr.

A funeral service for James Marlboro Dennis Jr. will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Teague Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Mawyer and his granddaughter, Amber Mawyer officiating. Interment icon will follow in Riverview cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. this afternoon at Teague Funeral Home.

William W. Fogarty

William W. Fogarty, 84, of Gladwyne, Pa., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born July 13, 1918, in Philadelphia, the son of William W. Fogarty and Ethel Gallagher Fogarty. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a corporate officer with Boscul Corp. and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Hover Fogarty, and daughter, Bradford Fogarty.

He is survived by a cousin, Marie Ludlow in Gladwyne, Pa., and a brother-in-law, William L. McGill in Charlottesville.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Susie Hughes Mawyer

Mrs. Susie Hughes Mawyer of Faber died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at her home after valiantly battling cancer. She was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Nelson County, daughter of the late Lewis Forrest and Susie Willis Higginbotham Hughes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel O. Mawyer on Jan. 31, 1977. They had run the State Farm Insurance office in Lovingston from 1962 to 1977.

Mrs. Mawyer was a member of Adial Baptist Church, Faber, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, member of the WMU, of which she served as secretary/treasurer, as well as financial secretary for the church for a number of years. She was a charter member of Rockfish Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the 99th Infantry Division Association.

A loving and devoted grandmother, she is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Mawyer Tinder of Amherst, Ella Wood and her husband, Frank, of Lovingston, and Sandra Scourby and her husband, Alex, of Alexandria; two sons, Samuel O. Mawyer II and his wife, Angie, of Shipman, and Jeffrey Forrest Mawyer and his wife, Kenda, of Faber; grandchildren, Suzanne Painter, Jennifer Johnson, Karah Faison, Leslie Tinder, Stephanie Scourby, Peter Scourby, Madalyn Mawyer, Jeffrey Mawyer, Alyssa Mawyer; three great-grandsons, Justin and Aron Painter, and Hunter Johnson; and in-laws, Mrs. Charles "Margaret" Hughes, Mr. John "Frances" Hughes, Mrs. Nelson "Frances" Hughes, Mrs. Elizabeth Harvey and her husband, Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mawyer, and Mrs. Louise Tyson.

Mrs. Mawyer was preceded in death by a sister, Ada Duncan, and seven brothers, "Dotie", "Tom", Jeter, John, "Cubby", Charles, and Nelson Hughes.

Susie will be remembered for her love of God and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Family night will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Adial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Bond and the Rev. Evan Johnson officiating, with burial immediately following in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Adial Baptist Church, 1090 Adial Rd., Faber, Va. 22938, or the charity of your choice.

Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, is in charge of arrangements.

Louis George Sadler

Louis George Sadler, 80, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his residence. He was born April 25, 1922, in New York City, the son of the late Joseph O. Sadler and Ethel Lewis Sadler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Willetta W. Sadler.

He was educated in the New York City School System and retired as a U.S. Postal Service worker. He was a former elder in the East congregation of Jehovah's Witness. Louis was very personable, outgoing, loving, and kindhearted. All who knew him loved him.

His survivors include two daughters, Sylvia I. Ratliff and her husband, Dallas, and Diane Rutigliano and her husband, Pasquale, of Milan, Italy; two brothers, Donald J. Sadler and his wife, Liture, of Martinez, Calif., and Thomas W. Sadler and his wife, Terry, of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Willie and Lisa Ratliff, of Charlottesville, and Timothy and Debra Ratliff, of Richmond; three great-grandchildren, Phillip and Suzette Ratliff, of Charlottesville, and Saquan Washington of Charlottesville; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the J.F. Bell Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall Saturday, July 27, 2002, with Joel Ronan officiating.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Cancer Care Center of Martha Jefferson Hospital and the Hospice of the Piedmont for the excellent care given to Louis during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jehovah's Witness.

Lissie Collier Shifflett

A service for Lissie Ann Collier Shifflett will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Evergreen Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. David Brunk officiating. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to the Evergreen Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 10, Dyke, Va. 22935.

Sadie J. Turner

A graveside service for Sadie Jefferson Turner will be held at 11 a.m. this morning at Bethany Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Stanley Holmes will officiate.

Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque, is in charge of arrangements.

Meriwether C. Ward

Meriwether Carr "Poochie" Ward of Free Union died Thursday, July 18, 2002, in a local hospital. Born April 3, 1934, he was the son of the late David Scott and Catherine Carr Ward.

Mr. Ward was a member of Free Union Baptist Church and retired from Comdial.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ward, and a brother Paul Wright Ward of Glen Allen.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted 4 p.m. this afternoon at Holly Memorial Gardens with Pastor Charles Dumaresq officiating.

Memorials may be made in his honor to the Earlysville Fire Department, P.O. Box 104, Earlysville, Va. 22936 or the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Crozet, Va. 22932.

William T. Welch

William Thomas Welch, 48, of Louisa, died Friday, July 19, 2002, in the Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born Aug. 6, 1953, in Gordonsville, the son of the late Wilburn Lynn Welch Sr. and the late Rhoda Evelyn Rhea Welch.

Mr. Welch was employed at Crossroads Ironworkers at Zion Crossroads.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Lynn Welch of Louisa; a son, Barry Andrew Welch of Louisa; one sister, Evelyn Estelle Meadows of Orange; and six brothers, Wilburn Lynn Welch Jr. of Waynesboro, Wade C. Welch of Louisa, Ricky Allen Welch of West Newton, Pa., Wesley Rhea Welch and David Randall Welch, both of Orange, and Tony C. Welch of Madison.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Robert Anderson Jr.

Robert Victor Anderson Jr., 45, of Palmyra, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at a local hospital. Born Oct. 7, 1956, in Plainfield, N.J., he was the son of Robert V. Anderson Sr. and the later Annley Marie Anderson.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marie Kimberly Anderson.

He is survived by his son, Sean Robert Anderson of Lake Monticello, and his brother, Alan Anderson of Medford, Ore.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Westfield, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to your favorite charity.

Brittany Hope Bishop

On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, our sunshine was taken away. Brittany Hope Bishop, at the tender age of 16, died suddenly.

There are no words to express how greatly missed she will be by her parents, Kellie and Beau; brothers, Ryan and Chris; and her grandma, Shirley. She was their joy and inspiration.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brothers, Ryan Bishop and Chris Dezio; grandmother, Shirley McNulty of Charlottesville; grandfather Earl Bishop of Charlottesville; four aunts, Kim Walker and her husband, Rocky, cousins Meaghan and William, Linda Ragland and cousin Scott, Earlene Flint and husband, Gary, cousins Bob, Jeannette and Austin, Becky Harlow and husband Jeff, cousins Wendy and Robert; and one uncle, John Bishop and wife, Brenda, cousins, Breanna and Jennifer.

Britt was a rising senior at Albemarle High School. She was a true and devoted friend, daughter, sister, cousin, granddaughter, and niece.

Brittany was known for her beautiful smile and twinkling eyes, her unique style, strength and genuine love of life. She loved music, travelling with her family and friends, and adored her pets, Riley and Domino.

Brittany truly lived like there was no tomorrow. She deeply touched all who knew her, and taught us the art of living every day to the fullest.

Following a private family burial, a public memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 735 Park St., with the Rev. Michael Finn-McKenzie officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Charlottesville/Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, Va. 22907.
