Norwood H. Meyer

Norwood H. Meyer, 97, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Westminster Canterbury Healthcare.

He was born April 23, 1905, in Detroit, and made Grosse Pointe, Mich. his home for the greater part of his life until he moved to Charlottesville in 1991.

He was a pharmacist and pharmaceutical chemist employed for 40 years by Parke, Davis & Co., now Pfizer. At the time of his retirement in 1967, he was Director of Sales Research and Development. He was responsible for the development of many pharmaceutical products.

He received degrees from Ohio State University and Harvard Business School.

During his business and retirement years, he was a member of a number of professional organizations, served on various civic and church committees, and was a member of Grosse Pointe Baptist Church. He and his wife, Helen, who died in 1987, were active in the affairs of Ohio State University, where he was a member of the College of Pharmacy Alumni Advisory Committee for over 25 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Christine S. Kennedy and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Thomas D. Kennedy; and his granddaughter, Christine E. Kennedy.

The family wishes to thank Dr. J. Devon Lowdon for his attention and support throughout Mr. Meyer's illness. Also, they would like to thank the staffs at The Colonnades Assisted Living, Westminster-Canterbury Healthcare, second floor, and The Hospice of the Piedmont, all for their compassionate care.

A memorial service for Mr. Meyer will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Massey officiating.

The interment service will be held in White Chapel cemetery, Troy, Mich., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the charity of your choice.

James B. Pace Sr.

James Bernard Pace Sr., 93, of Fork Union, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, in the Village Nursing Center. He was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Fluvanna County, son of the late James and Nora Newton Pace.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Bernice Lewis Pace; one son, Kenneth Wayne Pace; and one sister, Marie Wells.

He is survived by three sons, James B. Pace Jr. of Fork Union, Carl Edward Pace of Goochland, and Ralph Alec Pace of Newport News; six daughters, Jane Bauserman of Orleans, Doris Lauffenburger of Harrisonburg, Patsy Haney of Ruckersville, Debbie Payne of Troy, Darlene Payne of Palmyra, and Wanda Bourne of Troy; 20 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at the Sheridan Funeral home, Kents Store.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Donald Holberg will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fluvanna Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 96, Palmyra, Va. 22963, or the Memorial Baptist Church, Columbia, Va. 23038.

Earl Lee Payne

Earl Lee Payne, 60, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at his home.

Born Jan. 25, 1942, in Fauquier County, he was the son of the late Leslie Thomas Payne and Josie Anita Wharton Payne.

Mr. Payne was employed with Rudy's with more than 30 years of service. He was an avid Cavalier and Jeff Gordon fan.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Payne of Charlottesville; three daughters, Joanna Karns and her husband, Jeff, of Goldsboro, N.C., Barbara Garrison and her husband, Dennis, of Charlottesville, and Cheryl Jenkins and her husband, Robert, of Charlottesville; one son, Robert Lee Payne of Charlottesville; two sisters, Frances Haynie of Yorktown and Peggy Cruse of Illinois; five brothers, Randy Payne of Percellville, Gordon Payne of Fredericksburg, Frankie Payne of Winchester, Raymond Payne of Roundhill, and Thomas Payne of Frederick, Md.; eight grandchildren, Amanda Payne, Samantha Garrison, Jessica Garrison, Crystal Garrison, Jennifer Jenkins, Heather Jenkins, Joshua Jenkins, and Charles Grandstaff, all of Charlottesville; and one great-grandchild, Cicily Martin.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Maple Grove Christian Church with Mr. Roger Browning officiating. Interment icon will follow in Maple Grove Christian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at Teague Funeral Home and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the church.

The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Piedmont for all their love and support and Drew of the Salvation Army.

Ruth V. Persinger

Ruth Virginia Persinger, 78, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Sept., 22, 2002, in a local nursing home.

Born Sept. 15, 1924, in Beckley, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Blaine and Laura Jane Bennett Lilly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon D. Persinger; one sister, Loreene Frogale; and two brothers, Dale Lilly and Ray Lilly.

Mrs. Persinger was a retired lighting decorator. She was also an active volunteer for the 4-H, the Girl Scouts, and the American Cancer Society. She bred and trained AKC Yorkshire Terriers and Pomeranians.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane P. Birckhead of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Ashley Birckhead; numerous nieces and nephews; her faithful pet, "Molly;" one sister, Sandra Gillespie; and one brother, Andrew Lilly.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning in Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville, Va. 22906.

The family will receive friends at their residence.

Teague Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edmund Teeter Jr.

Edmund Hershey Teeter Jr., 77, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund Hershey Teeter Sr. and Bertha Houck Teeter.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Bruton Teeter; his children, Edmund Hershey Teeter III and his fiancee, Paula Faye Deane of Troy, Suzanne Teeter Barrett and her husband, James Edward Barrett, of Weyers Cave, Catherine Teeter Highlander and her husband, Daniel Willard Highlander, of Gordonsville, and Patrick Edward Teeter and his wife, Wendy Teeter, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Joseph Edmund Barrett and Emily Susan Barrett.

Mr. Teeter served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He formerly owned and operated The Shoe Center, Charlottesville, and was formerly with the Michie Co.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. George's Catholic Church, P.O. Box 9, Scottsville, Va. 24590.

Katherine T. Buck

Katherine Thompson Buck, 100, of Charlottesville, formerly of Southport, Maine, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Riverdale Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 15, 1902, in Southport, Maine, she was the daughter of the late John and Clara Alley Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Buck; and her son, William Buck.

Survivors include her children, Robert E. Buck of Charlottesville, Barbara Gorver of Clearwater, Fla., and John Buck of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, in Booth Bay, Maine.

George B. Cross

George Benjamin "Ben" Cross, 61, of 9626 Old Turnpike Rd., Afton, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Born July 8, 1941, in Bristol, Tenn., he was the son of Harry Kyle Cross and Gertrude Steppe Cross.

He was the owner of Ben Cross Fencing and formerly the owner of Pro Fence, Inc.

He attended Bristol Tennessee High School, East Tennessee State, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and the University of Tennessee.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years in Weildeflicken, Germany.

He supported the NRA, VFW, Republican Party, and the Hog Chapter.

He was known by many for his great interest in cars and racing. He enjoyed racing and participated with the late model cars, sprint cars, and he drove a champ cart for two years. Recently Mr. Cross became the announcer for the late model cars at Natural Bridge Speedway. Mr. Cross was keenly interested in Civil War history and had visited most battlefields of this war. He was well versed in the history and events of this period and enjoyed sharing his knowledge.

His humor and blue eyes will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

He is survived by his son, Benjamin Spencer Cross; his daughter, Nell P. Cross, both of Waynesboro; and an aunt, Evelyn Phelps of Bristol, Tenn.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Shelby Hill cemetery, Bristol, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at McDow Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn.

Henry Floyd Johnson

The Rev. Henry Floyd Johnson departed this life on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002.

Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Columbia, Miss., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Geylon Johnson.

The Rev. Johnson received his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Columbia and graduated from Globe Academy High School. He then enrolled in Southern University, Baton Rouge, La., where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies in 1958. From there the Rev. Johnson entered the School of Theology, Virginia Union University, Richmond and received a Master of Divinity degree in 1962.

During the academic year 1967-68, he studied at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond and earned a Master of Christian Education degree. His further academic pursuits include an academic year of Pastoral Clinical Training at the University of Virginia.

The Rev. Johnson was called to preach the Gospel at the early age of 15, but before his call, he evidenced a strong inclination toward the Christian faith. He was licensed to preach in 1951 and was ordained in 1958.

He was a minister for 52 years and a pastor for 46 years.

His great energy and his interest in the total development of man may be witnessed through his past leadership experiences in numerous organizations.

Among the organizations in which he had served and been a dominant factor prior to his residency in the state of Pennsylvania were, President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Ministerial Association, an interdenominational, interracial organization; President of the Charlottesville Branch of the NAACP; Junior Deacon of Jefferson Lodge No. 20 M.W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, F. and A. Masons, Inc.; Member of the Virginia Council of Human Relations; Board Member of The Instructive Visiting Nurses Association; Board Member of the Janie Porter Barrett Day Nursery; Co-founder of the Charlottesville Branch of the Big Brothers of America; Co-founder of the Interdenominational Sunday Morning Prayer Breakfast; Life Member of the YMCA and recipient of the Certificate of Distinguished Service from the Richmond Chapter; Chaplain of Xi Iota Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Later he became a life long member of Omega Psi Phi.

Before moving to the Philadelphia Community, the Rev. Johnson served as Pastor of Beulah Baptist Church, Tappahannock; Springfield Baptist Church, Petersburg; and Zion Union Baptist Church, Charlottesville, where he gave dynamic leadership in the building of a new sanctuary.

His other pastoral duties include Assistant to the Pastor, Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Baton Rouge, La.; Assistant to the Pastor, Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Richmond; and the Associate Pastor of the Bright Hope Baptist Church.

For 17 years, the Rev. Johnson was employed by the City of Philadelphia, Court of Common Pleas, from which he retired in 1988.

He was married to the former Lois V. Porter for 37 years.

The Rev. Johnson was a caring, sharing, "people" person. From his quick gait to his strong, firm handshake, one could easily ascertain that he never met a stranger. His friendliness endeared him to all. He was dedicated to his belief in God and to people.

The Rev. Johnson recently served two terms as Spiritual Advisor of the Baptist Ushers Brotherhood and Ladies Auxiliary of Philadelphia and Vicinity, Inc. and as a Board Member of that organization. He also served as Spiritual Advisor of the Louise Freely Memorial Pastor's Aide Union.

Finally, he made his presence known in this city with its participation in the four churches joint Easter Week Services held in Germantown and initiated its participation in the six churches Thanksgiving services.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Lois; his mother, Mrs. Minnie O. Johnson; two brothers; three sisters; several godchildren; his Mount Tabor Baptist Church family; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Mount Tabor Baptist Church, 110 West Rittenhouse St., Philadelphia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mount Tabor Baptist Scholarship Fund.
