Victor Carter Jr.

Victor Carter Jr. entered into eternal rest Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Newport News.

"VJ" as he was known to everyone, was born May 4, 1979, in Charlottesville, to Debra D. Johnson and Victor Carter Sr.

Later in his childhood he moved to Newport News, where he obtained his general education diploma. He will be fondly remembered for his deep concern for young children.

"VJ" was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Clarence S. Sims, and his paternal grandmother, Nellie Chiles.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother and stepfather, Debra and Jay Johnson of Newport News; his stepmother and father, Dorothy and Victor Carter Sr., of Keswick; three sisters, Victoria Davis and her husband, Terrance, of Rapidan, Stephanie Carter of Gordonsville, and Amy Johnson and her husband, Jamice, of Orange; maternal grandmother, Joyce V. Sims of Gordonsville; paternal step-grandparents; and a host of maternal and paternal stepaunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Preddy's Funeral Home, Gordonsville. Interment icon will follow in the Carter's cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jane H. Fitzhugh

Jane Booton Herndon Fitzhugh, 93, of Stanardsville, passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Evergreene Assisted Living.

She was born Oct. 21, 1909, at her homeplace in Ruckersville.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cam Herndon; mother, Bessie Graves Herndon; husband, E. Fletcher Fitzhugh; two half-brothers, Maxwell Herndon and Gaines Herndon; and two sisters, Mary Miller, and Lillian McMullen.

She is survived by a son, Rocky Fitzhugh, and daughter-in-law, Virginia Fitzhugh, of Stanardsville; a daughter, Judy F. Estes, and son-in-law, Joe Estes, of Gordonsville; three grandchildren, Rodney Conway Fitzhugh and wife, Laurie Fitzhugh, of Stanardsville, Jennifer F. Faulconer and husband, John Faulconer, of Orange, and Amy Jo Morris and husband, Tim Morris, of Somerset; and three great-grandchildren, Jenna and Judson Faulconer, of Orange, and Abby Grace Morris, of Somerset.

Jane graduated from Orange County High School and attended college as Madison Teachers College in Harrisonburg (now James Madison University).

Jane taught school in Greene County for ten years in Dawsonville, South River, and Ruckersville. She had many fond memories of her students. She was fortunate to have her students visit with her and reminisce the good old days.

She was retired as manager of the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation Service in Greene. She was instrumental in organizing the Greene County Fair.

After her retirement she was the secretary of Greene Hills Country Club for several years. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Stanardsville.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning in Holly Memorial Gardens, with Vicar Gary Barker. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Jane's home (the Fitzhugh Cottage, Willow Lane, Stanardsville).

Jane had a zest for life, a great sense of humor, and we all feel blessed to have had her in our lives.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Evergreene Manor for their loving care and patience in caring for our mother and grandmother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department, Greene County Rescue Squad, or a charity of your choice.

Ryan Funeral Home, Quinque, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary S. Flannery

Mary Patricia Saunders Flannery, 76, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at her home.

Born April 14, 1926, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Catherine Jennings Saunders.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Flannery.

Mrs. Flannery was a retired registered nurse and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Corps of Nurses. She was a member of Christ Community Church, the Senior Center, and was active in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Nadolski of Charlottesville, Patricia O'Connor of Frederick, Md., and Anne Lundgren of Philadelphia; two sons, Michael Flannery of Chicago and John Flannery of Silver Spring, Md.; three brothers, Joseph Saunders of Washington, D.C., Robert Saunders of Port, Ore., and William Saunders of Wheaton, Md.; and ten grandchildren.

Memorial services will be private.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the St. Luke's House Inc., 6040 South Port Lane, Bethesda, Md. 20814.

Mable Easton Garrett

Mable Easton "Jane" Garrett, 84, of Charlottesville died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in a local hospital.

Born Feb. 14, 1918, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph M. and Lillian L. Davis Easton.

She was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers.

She worked as an Assistant Voter Registrar for the City of Charlottesville for many years.

She is survived by two daughters, Melanie West of Charlottesville, and Diane Garrett and her husband, Joseph Kahler; her beloved grandchild, Leah Austin Kahler, all of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother, Philip E. Easton and his wife, Jean, of Charlottesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday morning in Riverview cemetery, with the Rev. Bruce Weatherly officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Hill & Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Cynthia D. Henegar

Cynthia Henegar, 42, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at her home.

She was born Dec. 17, 1959, in Roanoke, the daughter of William Sr. and Virginia Mae Hannabass Vier.

She is survived by her husband, Edward C. Henegar; her five children, Melissa, Rebecca, Cristina, Alexandria, and Robert John Henegar; her sisters, Susan Campbell and Brenda Dillon; her brother, William Vier; and two grandchildren, Dianne Torres and Kayla Henegar.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sidney Craig officiating.

Gustaf B. Hermanson

Gustaf Bernhard Hermanson, 90, of Louisa, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Born March 24, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son the late Carl Hjelmar Hermanson and Rachell Agnus Hermanson.

Mr. Hermanson is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emma Lee Hermanson; two daughters, Brenda Garner and her husband, Jerry, of Waldorf, Md., and Lynn Hutson and her husband, Jim, of Louisa; two sons, Hjelmar Hermanson and his wife, Patricia of Columbia, S.C., and David Hermanson of Louisa; 15 grandchildren, Sonia Speh, Patricia Marshall, Nicole Bresnahan, James Hutson Jr., Britt Conaley, Erick Hermanson, Adrian Hermanson, Wendy Garner, Rossey Garner, John Garner, David Hermanson, Steven Hermanson, Brian Hermanson, Gustaf Hermanson, and Tiffany Hermanson; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Cedar Hill cemetery in Suitland, Md. The Rev. John Hodgins will officiate.

Juanita S. Nicholson

Juanita Sparks Nicholson, 49, of Barboursville, passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2002.

She was born Feb. 11, 1953, a daughter of Mary Mildred Richards Sparks of Barboursville and the late John W. Sparks Sr.

In addition to her mother she is survived by two brothers, John Sparks and his wife, Linda, and Allan Sparks and his wife, Donna; a sister, Patricia Fairfax and her husband, Donald; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon at the New Life Baptist Church, with Pastor Richard Griswold officiating. Interment icon will following the Ruckersville cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to the Greene County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 302, Stanardsville, or the New Life Baptist Church, P.O. Box 207, Ruckersville, Va. 22968.

Christine H. Rucker

Christine H. Rucker, 91, was called from her earthly home to her eternally home, Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, in Barboursville, at the home of her granddaughter, Kabern Ann Frye.

She is survived by a number of grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Bethany Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley Holmes officiating. Interment icon will be in the family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Ryan Funeral Home.

Melvin Earl Snow

An informal funeral service for Melvin Earl Snow will be conducted at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Whispering Hope Chapel, located at Christian Aid Mission, with Pastor Nick Sylva officiating. Interment icon will follow in Riverview cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Helen Tatum Tipton

Helen Tatum Tipton, 94, of Orange, formerly of Tatum, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at her residence.

Born Oct. 9, 1908, in Tatum, Orange County, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Tatum and the late Ada Chewning Tatum.

Her husband of 55 years was the late John Elmo Tipton.

She was one of the oldest members of Antioch Baptist Church, member of the homemakers, and the young at hearts.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Tipton Tyler of Orange and Charlottesville; four grandchildren, John N. Wyatt Jr. of Fluvanna, Nancy Wyatt Crickenburger and husband, Danny, of Charlottesville, John Michael Wyatt and wife, Alison, of Louisa, and George B. "Ben" Tyler of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren, Steven Albritton and Danny Crickenburger, both of Charlottesville, and Jordan Elizabeth and Sarah Grace Tyler, both of Louisa.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Tipton Wyatt in 1977; two brothers, Robert and Lee Tatum; and four sisters, Faye Owens, Mattie McGhee, Leslie Williams, and Elsie Rinaca.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by Dr. Terry Green and the Rev. Brian Harfst.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to Orange County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 446, Orange, Va. 22960.

Charles S. Tomlin

Charles S. "Charlie" Tomlin, 77, of Gordonsville, formerly of Charlottesville, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Ethel and Ernest Tomlin.

He was a retired police officer with the Charlottesville Police Department and a Court Security Officer with the U.S. Marshall Service for 14 years. He attended Mechanicsville Baptist Church in Gordonsville. He served with the 90th Combat Infantry Division in the ETO during World War II, at which time he received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and other medals. He was a member of the Blue Badge, the FOP, D.A.V., VFW and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

He is survived by his wife, Velida "Nita" Sampson Tomlin, whom he married in 1950; a sister-in-law, Mabel C. Dudley; nephews, Dale Cummings of Charlottesville, and Bruce Cummings of Crozet; niece, Diana Hawes of Natural Bridge; devoted niece and nephew, Jackie and Billy; and three special boys, Sam, Jacob, and Elijah.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jane L. Cummings, and his brother, John G. Dudley.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, 250 W. Main St., Orange, with interment to follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. The Rev. Greg Compton will officiate.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Mechanicsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 10200 Louisa Rd., Gordonsville, Va. 22942.

Richard W. Wickert

Richard Wallace Wickert, 68, of Greenwood, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Wickert; one daughter, Jan Wickert; two sons, Ron Wickert and Steve Wickert; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Morris and his staff for the care and compassion shown to Mr. Wickert during his illness.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va., 22911.
