William Parson

Dr. William Parson, 89, an eminent physician and teacher who, in the course of his globetrotting career, played piano at Carnegie Hall, chaired a medical department at 35, revamped Uganda's medical school and did a brief stint as Idi Amin's personal physician, died in Seattle, Wash. died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, of complications following a heart attack.

Dr. Parson dedicated his life to medical education and spent more than 60 years teaching medical students around the world. In semi-retirement, he had taught an introduction to clinical-medicine course at the University of Washington since 1993 and made rounds at the Puget Sound Veterans Affairs Medical Center each Tuesday until his death. As an unusually precocious young man, he gave a piano recital at Carnegie Hall at the age of 16. In his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, he discovered a hormone disorder, pheudohypoparathyroidism, after noticing that a patients body was actually manufacturing parathyroid hormone. It only appeared that it was not.

At 35, he was named chairman of the University of Virginia's department of internal medicine, a tenured position he held until he and his wife, Lucille, packed up everything and moved to Uganda's capital, Kampala, in 1966. Dr. Parson nurtured a lifelong love of Uganda. He was the chairman of the department of medicine at Makerere University, then part of the University of East Africa, which drew students from neighboring Kenya and Tanzania. In his tenure, Dr. Parson established the areas first residency program.

In 1971, Idi Amin, a military officer, over threw the Ugandan government. Although later known for feeding his enemies to crocodiles and the murder and torture of more than 100, 000 Ugandans, Amin had a first year less violent than the years to come. Shortly after the coup, he made Dr. Parson his personal physician.

Dr. Parson left Uganda after Amin's first year, when the dictator began expelling the country's long-established Asian community. Dr. Parson later told friends he was astonished by his former patient's atrocities. On his net trip to Uganda a few years later, the police yanked Dr. Parson and his wife out of bed and tossed them in jail. They escaped a day later when Mrs. Parson simply pushed at the cell's door, conveniently left unlocked.

Dr. Parson had a appetite for travel but never "without a purpose, " said William "Bill" Parson, one of his four sons and a professor of biochemistry at the University of Washington. He spent years hopping continents as a professor or advisor to universities in Indonesia, Zaire, Taiwan, China and Papua New Guinea.

His last full day at a retirement center, University House in Seattle, , Wash., was typically busy and eventful. In the morning, he and his wife presented a slideshow and brief talk on Uganda. That evening, Dr. Parson took stage and played a seductive resident of a retirement home in a play, "Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Wright."

Dr. Parson grew up in Bronx, N.Y., the son of two immigrants, a Polish mother and a Russian Father.

He briefly considered a musical career before deciding to attend Columbia college and then Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He held teaching posts at numerous universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins and Stanford. In 1984, the American College of Physicians named him a "Master." Last year a group of former students and colleagues raised enough money to establish the William Parson Visiting Professorship in Teaching Excellence at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Parson is survived by his wife, Lucille; four sons, Jeffrey of Garberville, Calif., John of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas of Denver, Colo., and William of Seattle, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the William Parson Visiting Professorship in Teaching Excellence at the University of Virginia, Box 400807, Charlottesville, Va. 22904.
