Roy R. Bottenfield

Roy Raymond Bottenfield, 70, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at a local hospital after a long battle with Leukemia.

He was born June 17, 1932, in Suffolk to the late John Bottenfield and Emma May Bottenfield.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bottenfield; two daughters, Donna Bottenfield and Charles of Schuyler, and Pauline Everhart and her husband, Phillip, of Charlestown, W.Va.; one brother, Don Bottenfield and his wife, Louise of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Ruth Malonley and her husband Bob of Hatteras, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Johnnie Bottenfield, Tiffany Bottenfield, Crystal Gerlack, Angel Everhart, and Heather Everhart.

He retired from Orkin in 1988 and spent his time bowling and enjoyed many hours at Keglers.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at chestnut Grove Church cemetery in Earlysville, Dr. Roy S. Thomas III will officiate.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Roy Bottenfield Memorial Fund, C/O Elizabeth Bottenfield, 1000 Grove Street, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Roy D. Bradshaw

Roy Dement Bradshaw, 100, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Lovingston Health Care Center.

Born Feb. 9, 1902, at Roseland, he was a son of the late Charles Bradshaw and Catherine Smith Bradshaw.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two wives, Callie L. Bradshaw and Lula Hudson Bradshaw; and a favorite buddy and step-son, George Lahore.

He was a life long member of Rockspring United Methodist Church, and was a retired Quarry Operator and Machinist.

He had been an active resident of Lovingston Health Care Center until recent weeks and celebrated his 100th birthday there with hundreds of friends and family members celebrating that day. Roy will be remembered in Nelson County for his sharp wit and humor and also for his remarkable memory up until his recent illness.

He is survived by his nephews, Dr. William Glew and Ryland Robbins; his nieces, Betty Otorowski, Lorna Bryan and Janice Brentlinger; his step-daughter-in-law, Irene Rhoten Lawhorne, and her children Larry Lawhorne, Theresa Martin, and Kenneth Lawhorne, and their children.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with Dr. Daniel Abbott officiating with interment in Rockspring cemetery at Faber.

The family will receive friends following the service.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Rockspring United Methodist Church at Faber, Va. 22938.

Christopher Campbell

Christopher "Chris" Robert Campbell, 17, of Covesville, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, as the result of an automobile accident.

Born May 7, 1985, in Charlottesville, he was the son of Robert and Lou Campbell of Covesville.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Jane Harris; and his paternal grandfather, Massie Campbell.

Chris was a senior at Monticello High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was active at Covesville Baptist Church and was a Junior Volunteer Fire Fighter with the North Garden Volunteer Fire Company. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends, playing baseball, softball and riding four wheelers. He was an avid hunter and stock car race fan.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his maternal grandfather, Jessie Harris Jr. of Faber; his paternal grandmother, Ruth P. Campbell of Covesville; three aunts, Ada H. May of Orange, Becky Campbell of Charlottesville, Jan Farruggio of Charlottesville; one uncle, Randy Harris of Faber, a number of cousins, and his dear friends, David and Debbie Allen of Covesville, Ritchie Oliva, Thomas Terrell, Caleb Campbell, Evan Graves, John Dodd, Laura Tiscornia, Jason Parham and Cedric Whindleton.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Covesville Baptist Church with the Rev. George A. Woods officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Norvelle Family cemetery.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the North Garden Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 33, North Garden, Va. 22959 or the Covesville Baptist Church, 5757 Heards Mountain Road, Covesville, Va. 22931.

Earl H. Garrison

Funeral services for Earl H. Garrison will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in the Prize Hill cemetery, Boonesville. The Rev. John Brenneke will officiate.

Anderson Funeral Service, Crozet, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Vance Herndon

Funeral services for Ralph Vance Herndon will be held at 11 a.m. today from the Preddy Funeral Chapel, Orange, with interment in Maplewood cemetery in Gordonsville. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Tina Cox with Masonic Rites conducted by Waddell Masonic Lodge No. 228 of Gordonsville at the graveside service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Orange County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 446, Orange, Va. 22960, or Gordonsville, Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 574, Gordonsville, Va. 22942.

Elizabeth H. Koolage

The family of Elizabeth House Higginbotham Koolage will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Main Street, Orange. Interment icon will be at 3 p.m. in the Higginbotham Family cemetery in Amherst.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Calvary Methodist Church on Rowe Boulevard, Annapolis, Md.

The family has requested that anyone desiring to remember Betty through a memorial gift please consider Jacob's Ladder, an enrichment program for exceptionally gifted children who are at risk of not reaching their academic potential, P.O. Box 555, Urbanna, Va. 23175.

James Frank Lloyd

James Frank Lloyd, 83, of Keswick, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 18, 1919, in Albemarle County, and was a son of the late Ezekiel Lloyd and Cora Lee Colvin Lloyd.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Charlottesville.

Mr. Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sadie Lee Lloyd of Keswick; three sons, Eddie Frank Lloyd of Culpeper, Calvin Lee Lloyd of Louisa, and David Allen Lloyd of North Garden; and a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Holly Memorial Gardens cemetery, Charlottesville, officiated by Pastor Carmon Hartsfield.

Gertrude S. Mayry

Gertrude Susanna Mayry died peacefully several days after her 89th birthday on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003.

She will be remembered by family and friends for her vibrant spirit and girlish sense of humor. Gertrude was such a loving person, a devoted wife and a wonderful mom.

She was born into a large family and community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, being the third of nine children.

She is survived by two sons, Michael and Mark; eight grandchildren; four of her siblings; and a large extended family.

She will be reunited with her deceased husband, Wayne, in a memorial service to be held in Livonia, Mich., on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.

A small memorial service will be held with her loving friends and caretakers at the Martha Jefferson House in Charlottesville.

Preddy Funeral Home, Madison, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Kelley Osier

Pauline Kelley Osier, of New Harbor, Maine, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in her home, after celebrating her 100th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roland Kelley, who died in 1944; and her second husband, Malcolm Osier, who died in 1967.

Her Charlottesville survivors include, her daughter, Martha Baganz; her granddaughter, Barbara Simpson; her great-grandsons, Ethan and Blake Simpson.

Additional survivors include her grandsons, Bruce Baganz and his wife, Terry, of Houston, Texas, and Mark Baganz and his wife, Laurie, of Annapolis, Md.; additional great-grandchildren, Rose and Gus Baganz also of Annapolis, Md.; and her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Justin.

Polly was born in Cleveland Ohio and graduated from Hathaway Brown School and the Cleveland School of Art. She maintained her art interest and was a prolific painter in her younger years, and was a founding member of the Pemaquid, Maine, Art Gallery.

She had been a resident of New Harbor Maine, since 1944.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlottesville, SPCA, Woodburn Road, Charlottesville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Interment icon will be in Harrington Meeting House cemetery, Bristol, Maine.

Eugene P. Pollard

Eugene Pritchard Pollard, 93, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in a local nursing home.

Born Jan. 11, 1910, in Catawba County, N.C., he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Willie Lutz Pollard;

In addtion to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers, John, Murphy, Ted, Clarence, Jeff and David Pollard; and two sisters, Josephine Dorrier and Jessie Kidd.

The Pollard family moved from Catawba County, N.C. in 1920, to Scottsville, where Eugene attended the public schools of Albemarle County; he was a veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater of Aspirations.

In preparation for his ministerial work, he attended Randolph Macon College and Duke University. He retired in August 1984, after serving five districts of the United Methodist Churches. In 1988, he received his 50 year pen from Widow's Sons' Lodge No. 60 AF & FM in Charlottesville.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rachel Kirby Pollard of Charlottesville; two brothers, Lester Pollard of Jacksonville, Fla. and Retired Lt. Commander Felix Pollard of Newten, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Chisholm of Scottsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edward A. Hopkins officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be the Brethren from Widow's Sons' Lodge No. 60 AF & AM.

The family requests that contributions be made to the Charlottesville/Albemarle Rescue Squad P.O. Box 160 Charlottesville, Va. 22907 or Hinton Avenue United Methodist Church 750 Hinton Avenue Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

Hester A. Ross

Hester Ann Ross, a former resident of Charlottesville, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in a San Francisco nursing home.

She is survived by two children, Bet Taylor of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Charles Ross of Martha's Vineyard, Mass; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A family memorial service will be held at Boothbay Harbor, Maine, at a later date.

Keith M. Taylor

Keith M. Taylor, 84, passed away Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Orange County Nursing Home.

He was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Chesterfield County.

A retired Dairy Farmer, he and his wife have resided at Montpelier Station since 1980. He had been a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was active in reunion activities for his squadron as well as a member of the Quiet Birdmen.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; his sons, Wayne, Corwin and Kenneth; his daughters, Nan Warren and Malora Carpenter; a step-son, David Mika; a brother, Walden; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at walkers United Methodist Church in Madison, interment will follow a brief graveside service at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Chester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walkers United Methodist Church, HCR 5, Box 338, Radiant, Va. 22732.

Edith Rogers Thomas

Funeral services for Edith May Rogers Thomas will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville, with interment in Maplewood cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Sipe and the Rev. Edward Buzzy Deane will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
