Trenton F. Lamb

Trenton Foster "Fuzzy" Lamb, 66, of Palmyra, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at his home.

Born February 8, 1937, in Albemarle County, he was the son of the late Claude R. and Louise Morris Lamb. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin Lamb, Dallas Lamb and Nelson Lamb; and one grandchild, Devon Michael Scammahorn.

Fuzzy was an avid sports fan and hunter.

He is survived by two daughters, Teresa Meyer and Melissa Lamb; five sons, Vince Lamb, Kevin Lamb, Derek Lamb, Dustin Lamb and Dexter Lamb; two sisters, Violet Jones and Margie Eubanks; one brother, Tom Lamb; and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Teague Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Fuzzy’s children would like to thank their mother, Patricia for all her love and support.

Donald S. McGann

Donald Sterling McGann, 45, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home in Nellysford.

Born in Nelson County on June 10, 1958, he was a son of Phyllis McGann Flanagan of Nellysford and Donald McGann of Stuarts Draft.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Jessie Frazier McGann; two sons, Jeremy Michael McGann and his wife, Sandy, of Waynesboro, and Logan Sterling McGann of Nellysford; a sister, Regina Shifflett and her husband, Gregory, and their children, Brooke and Ryan, also of Nellysford; a twin brother, Jeff Ross McGann of Nellysford and his son, Brandon of Afton; two half-brothers, Chris McGann and Ricky Berry, a half-sister, Pam Royer, all of Stuarts Draft, his paternal grandmother, Thelma McGann of Nellysford; step-mother, Shirley McGann of Stuarts Draft; and many other loving relatives and friends.

Sterling was a devoted husband and father who loved his family. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with wood. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home, Roseland, by Pastor Robert Mansfield with burial on the McGann property in Stoney Creek. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the social hall of Beech Grove Christian Church.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Honorary flower bearers will be, David McGann, Joel Falls, Beau Ryan, Greg Shifflett, Wayne Fitzgerald, Warren Fitzgerald, Chris McGann, Bob Hunt, Billy Gormes, Carl Sites, Darrell Stevens, Steve Durkee, Justin Durkee, Brandon Durkee, John Hincle, Jimmy McGann, Freddie McGann, Brian Alexander, Justin Crimi, Rodney McCalester, Delane Fitzgerald, Ricardo Salles, Jeff Ferguson and Mike Hull.

Elizabeth W. Pollard

Elizabeth Wood Pollard, 93, of the Wake Forest Community, departed this life on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Heritage Hall.

She was born March 7, 1910, in Albemarle County, the daughter of the late Isaac Wood and Bessie Jones Wood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Pollard.

Three brothers, Lloyd Wood, Willie Wood and Isaac Wood, II preceded her in death.

She was a member of Blue Ridge Temple #67 Daughters of Elk; and a faithful member of Wake forest Baptist church who actively served in many capacities until her illness. Elizabeth was a superb cook and especially enjoyed welcoming and entertaining family and friends in her home.

Her survivors include three nieces, Evelyn Watkins of Charlottesville, Virginia, Elizabeth Wynter of Long Island, New York; and Patricia Pollard, of Hampton, Virginia; four nephews, Isaac C.L. Wood of Augusta, Georgia, Raymond Pollard of Newport News, Virginia, and Herman Pollard of New London, Connecticut; one sister-in-law, Thelma C. Wood of Huntington, West Virginia; a devoted great niece, Glenda J. Best of Palmyra, Virginia; and a number of loving great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Wake Forest Baptist Church, the Rev. Collins will officiate and the Rev. R.A. Hailes will deliver the eulogy. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Kathryn H. Scruggs

A graveside funeral service for Kathryn "Kitty" Hunt Scruggs will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Teague Funeral Home.

Nickolas J. Sojka

Dr. Nickolas Joseph Sojka, Professor Emeritus of The University of Virginia, died unexpectedly Monday, June 16, 2003, in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Born June 15, 1934, in Page, Nebraska, the son of the late Walter Sojka and Anna Boguz Sojka. He was a first generation American of Polish heritage. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Casimir and Leon Sojka.

Dr. Sojka was a Director of the Farm Credit Bank of the Virginias. He retired as Professor of Medical Education after 32 years at The University of Virginia. He was founder and chairman of the Department of Comparative Medicine. Prior to his arrival at The University, he served as an Associate in Veterinary Medicine at Duke University. Before entering the fields of research and education he served with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He also practiced veterinary medicine in Storm Lake, Iowa. Dr. Sojka served as the Assistant Post Veterinarian at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and was one of the original instructors at Fort Bragg’s Special Warfare School. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. He received his doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University and a Master of Science Degree in Surgery from The University of Virginia. He was a past President of the Charlottesville Kiwanis Club, Greenwood Ruritan Club and a member of the Greenwood Club. He was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

Dr. Sojka received numerous honors, including the 1996 Veterinary Lifetime Service Award from the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. He was past president of the Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association. He holds multiple patents for equipment used in the care of animals and has been published both nationally and internationally on topics including reproduction and Animal Well Being.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Cox Sojka; his son Nickolas Joseph Sojka, Junior and his wife Lucy Purcell Sojka and their children Eleanor Purcell and Joseph Augustus of Laurinburg, North Carolina; his son Thomas John Sojka and his wife Kristie Hamlet Sojka of Earlysville, Virginia and his son Benjamin Walter Sojka of Charlottesville, Virginia. His siblings include Victoria Wills and Helen Miller both of Fort Worth, Texas; Peter Sojka and his wife Irene of Page, Nebraska; John Sojka of O’Neill, Nebraska; and Carl Sojka and his wife Mary Jane of Newman Grove, Nebraska. Many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dr. Sojka resided on his farm, Cliffdale, in Afton, Virginia, where his passion for Animal Well Being and stewardship of the land are illustrated in all aspects of its operation. His ability for crafting local woods into wonderful creations also demonstrated his diverse talents.

A funeral mass will be held at The University of Virginia Chapel today at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Blau officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 331 Kent Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22903 or the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.

Pauline T. Stewart

Pauline Thompson Stewart, 80, of Scottsville, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1923, in Fluvanna County to the late Charlie Edwin Thompson and Bessie Kirby Thompson.

Mrs. Stewart married Thomas E. "T.E." Stewart Jr., in Richmond in 1941. They raised their three daughters in Richmond and moved to Fluvanna in 1980. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, and was also predeceased by her brothers, William Thompson and Lewis Thompson and her sisters, Alice T. Davis and Annie T. Swan.

Mrs. Stewart devoted her life to loving and caring for her family and was blessed with a heart that was kind and giving to all. She also enjoyed the gift of gardening, especially raising roses.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Mattox and her husband, Ray, of Riner, Joan Christian and her husband, Lin, of Cape Charles, and Brenda Moore and her husband, Gary of Scottsville; three sisters, Mary Lloyd, Lena Smith and Virginia Lambert; one brother, James Thompson and his wife, Ruby, all of Scottsville; nine grandchildren, Gayle Semones, Michele Dickerson and Denise Simpkins, all of Christiansburg, Stewart Roberts of Welcome, N.C., Anita Stephens and Paul Roberts, both of King, N.C., Paige Hornsby of Waynesboro, James Cason and Kohde Cason of Scottsville; 14 grandchildren; numerous nieces; one nephew; and a life-long family friend, Nancy Fitzhugh of Richmond.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the MICU Unit of the University of Virginia Medical Center for their caring and compassionate care of Mrs. Stewart during her hospital stay as well as Chaplains Stefan Pomrenke, David Rucker and Ann Pettit, who were there for the family with genuine caring hearts, kind words, gentle hands to grasp and above all, prayers. Many, many thanks and much love to each of you.

Janet, Joan and Brenda wish to express their sincerest gratitude to Aunt Ruby Thompson for her continued and undying love for their mother; to Miss Stacy Micklem for her love and compassionate support during our grief and to Sandy and Gerald Thomas for being true friends and devoted neighbors. May God shower you with special blessings.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church, Scottsville, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The eulogy will be given by her grandson, Mr. Stewart Roberts.

Randolph Glover

Randolph Carlton Glover died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born March 15, 1926, he was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert E. Glover and Gracie Shifflett Glover; and brothers, James Earl, Ollis, Bill and Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Roach Glover of Scottsville; brothers, Warren and his wife, Ellen, of Earlysville, James and his wife, Violet, of Purcelville, Carol of Batton Rouge, La., Henry and his wife, Joyce, of Scottsville, Herbert and his wife, Mary, of Charlottesville, and Walter and his wife, Nolita, of Charlottesville.

Graveside Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Monticello Memorial Gardens.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Adelaide A. Grant

Adelaide Alma Burg Grant, 85, widow of Mangus B. Grant, died at 12:20 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in the Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville.

She was born September 28, 1917, in Chicago, Il., daughter of Johannes "John" and Augusta Riske Burg.

Prior to retirement, she was employed by Ingleside Hotel for many years. She was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and member of the Diabetes Support Group with the University of Virginia.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene B. Sheinfeld.

Survivors include granddaughters, Gilliam G. Sheinfeld and Rachel L. Sheinfeld, both of Charlottesville; son-in-law, Howard Sheinfeld of Charlottesville; step-son, Ralph Grant of Hazel Grest, Il.; step-daughter-in-law, Marie Grant; step-son, Ronald Grant of Arizona; step-daughter, Jean Sheetz of Woodstock; and sister-in-law, Lucretia Keister of Staunton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church cemetery by Chaplain David Flack and the Rev. Kenneth Price.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, in the Henry Funeral Home, Staunton.

Family and friends will assemble at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Henry Funeral Home and travel in a procession to the cemetery.

Barbara P. Holladay

Barbara Pillinger Holladay, 82, of Gordonsville, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence.

Born July 18, 1920, in Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Milton Webb Pillinger and Helen Ingwerson Pillinger. She was the wife of the late James Minor Holladay Jr.

Mrs. Holladay is survived by one daughter, Sally Ann Holladay of Richmond; two sons, David Lee Holladay of Gordonsville and James Milton Holladay of Gordonsville; one grandson, Jay Holladay of Laurel, Md.; and her three dogs, Chrissy, Jingles and Bodie.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Inglewood Farm in Gordonsville. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, Va. 22963.

Hasley "Squire" Kent

In memory of our dear friend and colleague, Hasley "Squire" Kent, we invite friends and family to attend a celebration of his life today, anytime between 5 and 7 p.m., at Oyster House Antiques, 122 E. Main St. on the Downtown Mall.

Annette Hale Kirby

Annette H. Kirby, 94, of Charlottesville, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003, at her residence.

Born February 19, 1909, in Charlottesville, Va., she was the daughter of the late John J. Hale and Annie Bell Bruffey Hale. Mrs. Kirby was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald L. Kirby Sr., on December 13, 1988. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Kirby retired from Unique Gifts on 29 North where she was owner and operator for 22 years.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church until moving her membership to Broadus Memorial Baptist Church where she was a charter member.

Surviving is one son, Gerald L. "Jerry" Kirby Jr., and his wife, Emmarene, and two grandchildren, Gerald L. "G.L." Kirby, III, and his wife, Carol, and Kevin L. Kirby and his wife, Anette; two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Cassie Kirby also survive, as well as two nieces, Barbara Pringle of Maryland and Patricia Lane of Kissimmse, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Stinnett.

Funeral services will be held at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church at 11 a.m. today with the Rev. Bob Wheeler and the Rev. Eric Howell officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family would like to thank Dr. Osbourne, Dr. Goss, her caretakers, Marie Harris, Annie Simms and Katherine Lowe for their loving care.
