Howard R. Cromwell

Howard Russell Cromwell died Saturday morning, August 16, 2003. He was 94 years old. He was born October 9, 1908, in Clay City, Ind., and was the son of the late Harley L. Cromwell and ‘Rmenta Scott Cromwell.

Mr. Cromwell received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1930, and received his Masters Degree from Ohio State University in 1941. He began his teaching career in the small town of Boone Grove, Indiana and from 1931 to 1935 was the principal, coach and one-fourth of the faculty at Houston Rural High School in Shelby County, Ohio. He later taught science and mathematics at Piqua and Wyoming, Ohio.

From 1945-1947, Mr. Cromwell served as Head of the Salmon P. Chase College of Cincinnati, Ohio, and from 1947 to 1955, he served as Superintendent of Schools in Glendale, Ohio. In 1955, he and his family moved to Middletown, Ohio where in 1957 he became Superintendent of the Middletown Public Schools. He served in this capacity until his retirement in August of 1969.

Following his retirement as Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Cromwell became President of MPATI, Inc. an organization dedicated to producing and promoting public education television program. MPATI was located in Lafayette, Ind. For several years prior to his retirement, Mr. Cromwell had been the Chairman of the Ohio ETV Advisory Committee, a group that made considerable efforts on behalf of educational TV. Following retirement from MPATI in 1974, he and Mrs. Cromwell moved to Charlottesville, Va., to be closer to their children.

During the years that he lived in Charlottesville, Mr. Cromwell was a member of First Presbyterian Church, was very active in the Senior Center, the Miller Center, and the Men’s Garden Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of Camp Holiday Trails, was a member of the Sons of The American Revolution and a member of Widow’s Sons’ Masonic Lodge #60. Mr. Cromwell was also an enthusiastic sports fan, closely following the fortunes of both Ohio State’s and the University of Virginia’s football teams.

Mr. Cromwell is survived by his wife, Treva Wegrich Cromwell. The Cromwells were married on September 17, 1933, and were approaching their seventieth wedding anniversary. He is also survived by two children: his son David Marshall Cromwell of New York, N.Y., and his daughter, Judith Cromwell Heyde of Charlottesville. In addition he is survived by five grandchildren, Julia Russell, John Heyde, Kimberly Cromwell, Jenny Cromwell and Russell Cromwell. He is also survived by his six great grandchildren, Alex, Elise, Kate, Amanda, Katie and Michael.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Thomas Kennedy officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Melvin M. Hamilton

Melvin Hamilton of Charlottesville, Va., departed this life on Monday, August 18, 2003, at Trinity Mission. He was born July 28, 1915, to Will and Sally Hamilton in Johnson City Tennessee. Will and Sally had eight children. Three brothers, Clarence Hamilton, Gilbert Hamilton and James Hamilton, and one sister, Helen Day preceded him in death. He was the widower of Gertrude M. Hamilton.

Melvin served his country in World War II in the South Pacific. When D-Day observances would come around he would remark "What is there to celebrate, I was getting my butt kicked in the South Pacific." In 1945 he married Gertrude Michie who was the daughter of Rev. James and Mirah Michie. They raised and educated three daughters. Mrs. Hamilton died in 1995 leaving him with lovely memories of their 45 years together.

Melvin Hamilton retired from Virginia Power and Electric Company in 1980 after 31 years of service. "Buster", "Mac", "Hamp" and "Slap Papa", were his various nick names that were associated with his warm personality.

He leaves a long legacy of African American stories of the military and of his life. His various anodes "Girl", "Gal", and "hold your head up, you can make it", will long be remembered.

Mr. Hamilton was active in the Civil Rights struggle in the city of Charlottesville, he was a member and served as a deacon of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Gloria D. Hamilton of Santa Barbara, Calif., Melvinia P. Hamilton of Miami, Fla., and Nina A. Hamilton of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Roxie Jones of Long Branch, N.J.; two brothers, Argel Hamilton and Mac Hamilton of California; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Dr. E.G. Hall officiating.

The Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Steven C. Marrs

Steven Carroll Marrs, 57, of Bumpass died suddenly on August 19, 2003 at his home.

Born March 2, 1946, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late William A. and Lilla Leake Marrs. Three brothers, Nelson, Graham, and Ronnie and a sister, Joyce, also preceded him in death.

He served in the U S Navy and was an electrician at Philip Morris.

Survivors include three sisters, Odell, Iris and Sue and a brother, Alvyn.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on August 23, 2003, at Riverview cemetery with Rev. Sidney Craig officiating.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frances G. Wade

Frances Garrison Wade, 83, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday August 20, 2003, in Culpeper Regional Hospital surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Born February 22, 1920, in Keswick she was the daughter of the late William H. Garrison and Mallie W. Davis Garrison.

Her husband Warren Franklin Wade preceded Mrs. Wade in death.

She retired as a nurses aide from the Cedars Nursing Home.

She is survived by three daughters, June V. McCauley and her husband, Pete of Crozet, Sandra Jarman Merrick and her husband, Gordon of Earlysville and Cindy Wade Perkins and her husband, Franklin of Fluvanna; her son, Warren Franklin Wade, Jr. and his wife Cathy of Spotsylvania; a sister, Alberta Payne of Orange; and also survived by 3 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m today at Holly Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Lowell Vaught officiating.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 - 8 p.m. at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Dorothy Chapman

Dorothy "Dot Chapman, 62, died peacefully at her home in Keswick, on August 16, 2003.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers of Hospice of the Piedmont and they also suggest for those wishing to make memorials, consider the American Diabetes Association.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, August 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses located on Fifth Street Extended (Old Lynchburg Road) in Charlottesville, Va.

The R.L. Gilliam Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family with arrangements.

Harry L. Colvin Jr.

Harry L. Colvin Jr., 45, of Stanardsville, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 17, 2003, in a motorcycle accident in Stanardsville, Va. He swerved to miss a woman and her child, who were riding a John Deere Gator ATV who pulled out in front of him on Route 621, River Bottom Road about 2:30 p.m. He worked for eight years for Jim Woodson Home & Hardware.

He is survived by his father, Harry Louis Colvin Sr., and his step-mother, Ethel Colvin, of Somerset, Va.; his sisters, Shirley Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., and Connie Pounders of Haymarket, Va., plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Cason Colvin, and his sister, Patricia Colvin. His deceased sister, Patricia's children, Jennifer Pritchett & Jason Yowell of Ruckersville. Other special neices & nephews are Jeanine Blevins, from Crozet, Va., Patrice Smith from Aldie, Va., & a nephew Jamie Clark from Unionville, Va.

He was a devoted son to his father and stepmother, Harry and Ethel Colvin of Somerset, Va. He will be missed by all who loved him. We never walk alone even though we may think we do, even in our despair God always walks with you. He is now in the Lord's hands. "No greater love has a man than he lay down his life for another."

Funeral services were held yesterday at 11 a.m. at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange, with Dr. James D. Singletary Jr. and Mark H. Smith officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Graham cemetery, Orange.

Daniel Haden

Daniel Haden departed this life at his home 3551 Hadensville-Fife Road, Goochland, August 19, 2003. His parents Charles B. and Nettie M. Haden, and one brother, Percy Raymond Haden, preceded him in death.

He was employed at Morton's Frozen Foods of Crozet, for thirty years.

He is survived by three sisters, Anna H. Wilkins and Parfena H. Quarles of Goochland, and Sue H. Kimbrough of Jamaica, NY.; three brothers, Dr. Charles Haden Jr. MD, (Joyce M.) of Goochland, Cornell Haden of Natural Bridge and Dr. Joseph Haden Sr.(Diane S.) of Ft. Washington, Md.; two aunts, Van Morris of Louisa, and Nancy H. Fisher of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister-in-law, Maxine Griffin, of Richmond; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 1 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church; 4070 County Line Road, Kents Store, (Goochland). Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of service. Rev. Walter Jones, Pastor officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery. Thomasson Funeral Services, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Payne Jones

Ruth Payne Jones, 73, of Charlottesville, entered eternal rest on Saturday, August 16, 2003, at the Cedars Nursing Home.

She was born August 6, 1930, to the late John H. and Dora Brooks Payne. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jasper V. Jones Sr.

She was educated in the Charlottesville Public Schools and attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was employed by the Cedars Nursing Home for over 30 years and she was a faithful member of Trinity Episcopal Church and also a member of the Blue Ridge Temple number 66.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted mother Dora B. Payne, one son Jasper V. Jones Jr., both of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Colette Burns and her husband, Tim, Courtney Jones and his wife Keishuh, Jermaine Jones all of North Carolina; Felicia Morton and her husband Robert of Charlottesville; six great-grandchildren, two aunts, Florine Payne and Mary Blair, both Charlottesville, and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

Ms. Jones will lie in state at the funeral home today from 12-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 22, 2003, at 1 p.m., at the Trinity Episcopal Church, with Priest Melana Amaker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens cemetery. Services of comfort are entrusted to the McClenny Funeral Service Inc., R.B. and Doris A. McClenny, morticians.
