Elizabeth Schoeneman

Elizabeth Weaver Schoeneman, 89, of Rochelle, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003, in the Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born May 6, 1914, in Rochelle, Va. She was the daughter of the late Mosie Franklin Weaver and Ola Jennings Sims Weaver, and wife of the late Harry Carl Schoeneman Jr.

She was a member of the Rochelle Christian Church. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Havens, and husband Dan of Springfield; a son, Frank Schoeneman, and wife Jean of Falls Church; four grandchildren, Ralph Havens, De De Swanick, Cindy Hagenhoff, Tracie Schoeneman; four great-grandchildren, Bryan and Paige Havens, Sara and Jeremiah Hagenhoff, all of Northern Va.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2003, at Rochelle Christian Church cemetery, conducted by Rev. Ken Morton. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday morning at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rochelle Christian Church, P. O. Box 12, Rochelle, Va. 22738.

Barbara A. Snead

Barbara Ann Fox Snead, 56, of Ivy, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born on November 7, 1946, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Ernestine Fox. She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Shirley Mae Fox. Barbara was diagnosed in September 2002, with cancer which had spread to various parts of her body. She was a member of Crozet Baptist Church.

Barbara is survived by her husband S. M. "Sonny" Snead, of Ivy; a son, Clayton Lee Shifflett and his wife, Karen, of Crozet; a stepson Randy Snead and his wife Diana, of Barboursville. She is also survived by her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Lebron Drumheller of Lovingston, Joyce and Gilbert Shifflett of Crozet; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Amelia Fox of Gordonsville. She was affectionately known as "Grandma Babes", by her two grandchildren, Jead and Charlotte Shifflett, of Crozet. She was also survived by two step-grandchildren, Tiffany and Trenton Snead, of Barboursville; five nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

Barbara was employed by Comdial from January 1966, until February 2002, and at the time of her death she was employed by Microaire Surgical Instrument.

The family would like to thank all of Barbara’s friends, church friends, former co-workers, and especially her co-workers at Microaire for all the compassion, love, and support given to her during the past eleven months.

Barbara requested that there be no family night, no public viewing, and no church service, but a morning graveside service. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to the Crozet Baptist Church, 5804 St. George Ave., Crozet, Va. 22932, or American Cancer Society, 3042-D Berkmar Dr., Charlottesville, Va. 22901.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, at Rockgate cemetery. Rev. David Collyer will officiate. The Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alma Virginia Trent

Alma Virginia Trent, 88, of 4210 Viewmont Road, Earlysville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville. Born April 1, 1915, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Clyde Trent and Rita Rexrode Trent, she was a retired employee of the University of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis C. Trent Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., today, at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Rev. Jeff Allen.

Finch and Finch, Inc.Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline W. Wingfield

Pauline W. Wingfield of Charlottesville died Aug. 26, 2003, at the Colonnades Health Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Teague Chapel, with the Rev. Robert G. Price officiating. Interment icon will follow in Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening, at Teague Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Bethany Baptist Church, P.O. Box 4881, Charlottesville, VA 22906 or the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Mary Bell Beasley

Mary Bell Beasley, 89, of Stanardsville, passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at a Charlottesville hospital. She was born April 1, 1914, in Greene County, daughter of the late Willie and Mamie Collier Morris. Her first husband was Davis Shifflett, and her second husband was the late Linnie Beasley. She is also preceded in death by two sons, Luther Shifflett and Randolph Shifflett.

She is survived by five sons, James Shifflett, and wife Thelma, of Orange, Harmon Shifflett, and wife, Lucille, Kenny Shifflett, and wife Audrey, Howard Shifflett, and wife Doris, and Leon Beasley and wife Carla, all of Ruckersville; two daughters, Hattie Brill, and husband Michael, and Joyce Wheeler, and husband, John of Stanardsville; two step daughters, Esther Abel of Fredericksburg, and Eunice Shifflett of Stanardsville; two sisters, Della Byram, and husband Bruce, and Arlene Byram, and husband Eugene of Orange; 26 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2003, at the Nortonsville Pentecostal Church, with interment in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pastor Robert Akers and Brother Ellis Roach will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2003, at the Church.

The family suggest memorial contributions be given in her name to the Greene County Rescue Squad; P.O. Box 2003, Stanardsville, Va. 22973. Ryan Funeral Home, in Quinque, is in charge of arrangements.

Rodney L. Davis

Sgt. Rodney L. Davis, 30, of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, in the line of duty. Hill and Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will be in Friday’s Daily Progress.

Lorene E. Downer

Lorene E. Downer, passed away, August 24, 2003, after a valiant battle against a difficult illness.

Funeral services will be held today, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville with Reverend Eric Powell and Reverend Bob Wheeler officiating. Interment icon will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Hill & Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Junuis M. Harris Sr.

Junuis Marshall Harris Sr., 80, of Gordonsville, departed this life Sunday, August 24, 2003, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville. He was the son of the late Louise Harris, and raised by the late Irene Johnson. Mr. Harris was married to the late Elsie V. Mills Harris and also was preceded in death by four daughters, Lorraine Harris, Tammy Harris, Jackie Harris, and Alberta Johnson; one son, Junuis M. Harris Jr.

He was employed by the Whitehurst Paving Company for thirty years.

He leaves to cherish his memory four sons; Clarence, James, Billy and, Steven Harris, all of Gordonsville; two daughters, Yvonne Quarles (Lester) and Diane Allen (Charles), both of Gordonsville; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Harris of New York; two devoted friends, Jackie and Martha Ann Holiday, both of Gordonsville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2003, at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, Gordonsville, with Rev. Marvin E. Jackson, presiding. The eulogy will be by the Rev. James E. Washington. Mr. Harris will lie in state one hour prior to service. Interment icon will take place in the Church cemetery immediately after the service. Thomasson's Funeral Service Inc., Louisa, is in charge of arrangements.

Madelyn Ollis Hicks

Madelyn Ollis Hicks, 83, died Saturday, August 23, 2003, in Austin, Texas. She was born Madelyn Harde Ollis on August 29, 1919, in Houston, Texas. She graduated in 1939, from the University of Texas and in 1942, married John Hardin Hicks.

After World War II, John and Madelyn lived in various cities in Texas before moving to Beaumont in 1965 where she attended St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Madelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John, and is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law; Jay and Linda Hicks of Charlottesville, Va., Tom and Cinda Hicks of Dallas, TX., Steve and Donna Hicks of Austin, TX., Bill and Paula Hicks of Bryan, TX.; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Beaumont, on Friday, August 29, 2003, at 2 p.m. under the direction of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Committal service and entombment will immediately follow at the Community Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Madelyn Hicks to Alzheimer's Research c/o The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; in Dallas, P.O. Box 910888, Dallas, TX. 75391-0888.

Samuel E. Mimms, Jr.

Samuel Edward Mimms Jr., 74, of Charlottesville, died Sunday August 24, at his residence.

Born March 22, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of the late Samuel Edward and Mary Sue Gentry Mimms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Michael Mimms, a brother, Edward Thomas Mims and an infant sister, Mary Ellen Mims.

Mr. Mimms retired from the Equifax Corporation in 1989 after 43 years of service.

He is survived by six children, Brenda Gail Mimms, Kathryn Mary Mimms Mews, Tracy Carolyn Mimms, Stephen Douglas Mimms, John Leslie Mimms and Edward Paul Mimms; one sister, Elsie Lee Barnes; one brother, Bobby Wayne Mimms; twelve grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; several aunts; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today, at the Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville. A reception will be held at the Elks Lodge on Elk Drive from 5 to 7 p.m., with Elks Rights at 5:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlottesville/Albemarle Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Amy Renee Phillips

Amy Renee (Rose) Phillips, 28, died as a result of natural causes at her home in Staunton, Va., on Monday, August 25, 2003. Amy and her husband, Antony Raymond Phillips, owned and operated Red Ridge Farm in Staunton for the past five years. Amy was an accomplished horsewoman and well-recognized breeder of Irish Draught Horses.

Amy graduated from Xavior High School in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1993, and from Colorado State University, with a degree in Biology in 1997.

Services celebrating her life will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church at 10 a.m., on Friday, August 29, 2003, presided over by Rev. Doug Gunsalus.

Amy leaves behind two young children, Devon Tyler (2 ½), and Grace Elizabeth (1), as well as her husband, Tony Phillips.

She is survived by her mother, Pamela K. Rose, of San Diego, Calif., her father, Marshall J. Rose, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her brother, Pete Rose, of San Diego, Calif.; a grandmother, Bernice Rose, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and uncles, Jim Mortensen of Kona, Hawaii and John Rose of Phoenix, Ariz.

Donations in Amy’s honor may be made to the National Marfan Foundation; 22 Manhasset Ave., Port Washington, N.Y.11050, as well as special scholarship fund for her children’s future college expenses; c/o Jeanette Varghese (502) 228-7173, also donations will be accepted for a special horseman sportsman fund in Amy Phillips name, sponsored by the IDHS Community; contact Laurie Monroe (803) 901-1630. Pearl M. Powell

Pearl McCary Powell, 76, of Charlottesville, died Aug. 24, 2003, at Westminster Canterbury.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, August 29, at the Hill & Wood Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Schumaker officiating. Interment icon will follow at Scottsville cemetery.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sonia Schrimpf

Sonia Schrimpf, 62, of Charlottesville, died August 26, 2003, in a local hospital.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1p.m. today at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Teague Funeral Home.

Teague Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Virginia Cook

Alice Virginia (Hull) Cook, 96, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at The Cedars Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 24, 1906, at Lexington, she was the daughter of John and Lilea (Fix) Hull.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jones Cook on Jan. 19, 1992.

Surviving are a daughter, Agnes Daniel; a brother, Daniel Blair Hull of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, James, Robert, and Frederick Daniel, Penny Armentrout, Becky Daniel, and Ellen Desper; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private.

Friends may call at Bear Funeral Home at any time today.

The family wishes to express our appreciation for all the friends who visited, sent cards, flowers, prayers. We would especially like to thank Dr. Chesler and his staff, and the nurses at The Cedars Nursing Home for the loving care they gave to "Cookie".

Jessie L. Duff Mueller

Jessie L. Davis Duff Mueller, 96, 2003, died Sept. 30, 2003.

Jessie was born March 12, 1907, in Highland Park, Ill., to Jessie Lee Davis and Beatrice Lucille Edwards. Jessie’s younger siblings, Margaret Swanson, Beatrice Davis and Allan Davis all predeceased her.

She was also predeceased by her first husband, Alexander Duff, and second husband, Fred Mueller.

She was survived by two children, Ronald (Dona) Duff, of Cumming, Ga., and Jessie Duff-McLaurin, of Crozet; six grandchildren, Byron (Nan Duff) of Cobbs Creek, John Duff of Spring Grove, Ill., Gregory Duff of Arlington, Texas, Jeffrey (Vickie) Duff, of Manassas, Alexa (Will) Venturini Calhoun, of Cornwall, Conn., and Franklin Venturini, of Branford, Conn.; six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Gary, Rebecca and Christine Duff, Eliana and Luca Calhoun; three step grandchildren, Ian (Elin), Bruce (Cathie) and Ross McLaurin; five step great-grandchildren Scott (Amanda) McLaurin, Inge (Andrew) Petalik, Alexandra, Angus and Caelan McLaurin; and one step great-great-grandchildren, Ryan McLaurin, all of Ontario, Canada; any many nieces and nephews.

Jessie was a Medical Record Librarian at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago.

She was very active in school, church and volunteer organizations, and was a Girl Scout troop founder and leader. She was very generous and thoughtful about special events in people’s lives and touched many with her kindness. Jessie mothered countless stray animals, loved nature and loved to travel, visiting family throughout the world.

Before coming to Crozet in 1992, she lived in Chicago, Ill, Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and Valparaiso, Ind.

Her family expresses deep gratitude for the kindness and thoughtfulness of the wonderful staff at Heritage Hall, Charlottesville, and to the staff and residents at the Meadows in Crozet.
