Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Margaret E. Peyton

Margaret Elizabeth Peyton of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George M. and Elise Fischer Peyton of Rapidan.

Private graveside services will be at Waddell Memorial Presbyterian Church cemetery, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, following Church services.

Preddy Funeral Services are in charge of arrangements.

Mark S. Smith

Mark S. Smith, 53, of West Point, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003.

He was employed at Smurfit-Stone as an instrumental technician and was a veteran of the US Marine Corp.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Smith; five children, Lori, Josh, Melissa, Jessica and Heather; one granddaughter, Emma; his mother, Betty Jo Smith, of Bluefield, W.Va.; a brother, Jim Smith of Columbus, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 203, at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point.

The family will receive friends tonight 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Barbara B. Zollinger

Barbara Thompson Burgess Zollinger, 71, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2003, at her residence in Warm Springs.

She was born March 27, 1932, in Washington, D.C. to the late Mabel Olivia Fisher and Newbold "Pete" Burgess.

She spent her childhood in Charlottesville, in the home of her mother and stepfather, the late Thomas M. Carruthers.

She graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.

After working for Prudential Insurance Company in Washington, D.C. Ms. Zollinger returned to Charlottesville where she raised her three daughters, Page, Margaret and Joan Turner. She moved to Warm Springs, several years ago where she managed the Lemon Twist apparel shop at The Homestead. At the time of her death, Ms. Zollinger was retired.

She was a member of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sarah Murray Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Ms. Zollinger is survived by her three children, Page Erinn Turner of Charlottesville, Margaret Olivia Newbold Turner of Durango, Col. and Joan Turner Burden of Asheville, N.C.; three grandchildren, Erinn Anne, Levi John and Julia Grace Scheibel, all of Charlottesville; two sisters, the Reverend Carol Carruthers Sims of Livingston, Mont. and Elizabeth C. Bruce of Virginia Beach.

A funeral service for Ms. Zollinger will be conducted at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Hot Springs, with the Reverends Carol Carruthers Sims and John D. Sterrett III officiating.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at Grace Episcopal Church in Cismont. Followinig this service, a reception will be held at "Cloverfields" in Keswick.

Ruby M. Coleman

Ruby Moon Coleman, 80, of Charlottesville, died Sept. 29, 2003, at her home.

Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Julia Diehr Moon. Her husband, Robert A. Coleman; two brothers, William and Walter Moon; and four sisters, Claudia Smoot, Rita Wood, Juanetta Woody and Dora Kirk, also preceded her in death.

She was retired from Centel.

Survivors include her children, Robert Coleman Jr. and Jane Pritchett and her husband, Woodie, all of Charlottesville; Barbara Smalley and her husband, Richard, of Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Coleman, also of Charlottesville; a sister, Velma Smith, of Alexandria; 11 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at the Hill & Wood Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Price officiating. Interment icon will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Mae Gilliens

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against there is no law.

Irene Mae Gilliens, daughter of the late James and Bertha Coles, departed this life Sept. 28, 2003, at her home in Mineral.

She was born October 17, 1917, in Hanover, where she attended Hanover County Public Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Gilliens, a son, Ellwood Waller and a daughter, Bessie Mines.

Mrs. Gilliens leaves to mourn a devoted granddaughter and caregiver, Joyce Bowles and her husband, Harvey, of Louisa; her special great-grandchildren and caregivers, Keisha Winston, Terrance Henson, Rondell Henson, Stephanie Saunders and Yasmine Winston; four children, Lorraine Jackson of Louisa, Josephine Anderson of Hanover, Nadine Glasco of Ashland and Carter Waller and his wife, Elisabeth, of Spotsylvania; three sisters, Alice Waller and her husband, George, Pauline Waller and Ruby Coles, all of Beaverdam; two brothers, Joseph Coles of Spotsylvania and Benjamin Coles of Beaverdam; 26 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Louisa Baptist Church, 305 Main St., Louisa, with Apostle Randolph Ragland officiating. There will be a viewing one hour prior to service. Interment icon will follow funeral service in the Holy Church of the Living God cemetery, 5442 Columbia Road, Gordonsville.

Thomasson’s Funeral Services Inc. of Louisa, is in charge of all arrangements.

Kenneth Elliott Harlan

Kenneth Elliott Harlan, 71, passed away on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003.

Born in Charlottesville, he moved to Yorktown in 1942.

He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1958, and worked for the Amoco Oil Company at the Yorktown Refinery and then the American International Oil Company in Chicago for 20 years. In 1980, he became a corporate drop-out and returned to Yorktown.

Mr. Harlan was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Ft. Eustis. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War aboard Icebreaker Westwind and was a charter member of the Denhigh Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie H. Harlan and Mary Harris Harlan.

He was survived by his wife, of 48 years, Rosemary; three sons, Donald Harlan of Lee Hall, Robert Harlan and wife, Karin, of Troutville, Peter Harlan and wife, Cathie, of Troy; five grandchildren, Emalee, Kyle, Aaron, Kristina and Michael; a sister, Anna Lee Caldwell of Willmington, N.C.; a brother, Harris Rudell Harlan of Yorktown.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Amory Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dennis Worsham officiating. Burial will follow in Lebanon Church of Christ cemetery, Newport News.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Edgar L. Lane Jr.

A graveside service for Edgar L. Lane Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Route 610, New Canton, conducted by the Rev. Royce Jones.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA 23707.

Valerie Langston

Valerie Langston 47, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at UVa Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be held in Detroit, Mich.

Marvin David Moore

Marvin David Moore, 51, of Charlottesville, formerly of Baltimore, quietly passed away on Sept. 27, 2003.

Born March 16, 1952, to Alexander J. Moore and the late Mary Edges. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Dennis Moore.

Survivors include, his father, Alexander (June) Moore; a son, Stacey Thomas; a daughter, Racquel Brooks; four grandchildren; aunts, Olive Jackson, Joanne Brown; Godmother and aunt, Jean (Becky) Sherrod, all of Md.; a Godson, Sidney Stinnie; a loving and devoted special friend, Dianne Frye; numerous faithful and loyal friends all of Charlottesville; and other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Oakwood cemetery. Pastor Emrey of The New Beginnings Christian Community will conduct the service. Please assembly at the funeral by 12:15 p.m.

Mary Lee Shifflett

Mary Lee Shifflett, 58, of Standardsville, passed away Sept. 30, 2003, at a Charlottesville hospital.

She was born Feb. 20, 1945, a daughter of Gracie Collier Shifflett of Stanardsville and the late Arthur Shifflett.

Besides her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Melessia Wyant and husband, George, of Dyke, and Jennie Marie Shifflett of Stanardsville; two brothers, Arthur Shifflett and wife, Pat, of Standardsville, and Henry Shifflett and wife, Patty, of Quinque; three sisters, Helen Moon and husband, James, Judy Shifflett and husband, Mark, of Stanardsville, and Joann Gayle of Charlottesville; a grandson, grandma’s pride and joy, Jesse; her companion, Albright Morris, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Evergreen Church of the Brethren, with interment in the family cemetery on Snow Mountain. Rev. C. C. Kurtz will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ryan Funeral Home in Quinque.

Raymond L. Turner

Raymond L. Turner, 67, of Charlottesville, departed this life on Friday, Sept. 26, 2003.

He was born in Nelson County, the son of the late Charlie and Ardelia Wells Turner. He was married to Joan Vaughan Turner.

He retired after more than 45 years of service with the Microbiology Department of the University of Virginia Medical School and was still working part-time at the lab at the time of his death.

He accepted Christ at an early age, and became a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Nelson County. Later, he joined Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, Charlottesville, and was a faithful and active member serving on the Usher Board. He was always a willing volunteer to help in any capacity.

In addition to his beloved wife, Joan Vaughn Turner, he leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Gregory Turner and his wife, Laura, of Stuarts Draft, Gary Turner, and Raymond Harris of Charlottesville; three stepsons, Jerry Johnson Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline, of Wake Forest, N.C., Brian Johnson and his wife, Alease, of Chester, and Todd Johnson and his wife, Margo, of Los Angeles; a stepdaughter, Karen Chambers and her husband, Tim, of Charlottesville; a devoted daughter-in-law, Ramona, of Louisa; two brothers, Eddie Turner and his wife, Mamie, and Charlie Turner Jr. and his wife, Marion, all of Charlottesville; a sister, Eva Henderson, of Charlottesville; a devoted cousin, Ralph Wells of Keswick; three grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 2, 2003, at Mount Zion African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Ave., with Dr. Alvin A. Edwards officiating. Interment icon will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services.

Martha Lee King

Martha Lee King, 78, of Charlottesville, passed from this life on Sept. 27, 2003.

Born Jan. 29, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Ethel Chisholm King.

She is survived by a brother, Frank Chisholm King of Crozet; a sister, Hazel Irma Clements of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, Ralph Kenneth Ballowe of Richmond; many nieces and nephews; and her "special" family, the Allaires.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Oakwood cemetery, with Pastor Nickloas Sylva officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edgar L. Lane, Jr.

Edagar Licouvous Lane Jr., affectionately known as "Cutie", died at his home Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003.

Born in Richmond, April 9, 1911, he was the son of the late Edgar L. Lane Sr. and Lilie Belle Nemmo Lane.

At an early age his family relocated to Charlottesville. He graduated from Lane High School in 1931, where he participated in football and track. He attended University of Virginia’s School of Engineering two years and retired June 1, 1979, after 38 years of service with Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church in Portsmouth and had been a mason since November 1, 1949, Tidal Wave Lodge #273 AF & AM.

His wife, Virginia Anderson Lane of New Canton, Buckingham County, died in 1997.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Frances Lane Morris of Simeon; several nieces and nephews; and his caregivers, Tracy L. Morris, Mrs. Betty Jarman and Mrs. Melissa McCauley, all of Charlottesville.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Route 610, New Canton, conducted by Rev. Royce Jones. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Va. 23707.
