Luetta G. Dean

Luetta Germaine Dean, 79, of Charlottesville, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at her residence.

Born November 7, 1924, in Monroeville, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Cora Lee Stezel.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Dean, one great granddaughter, Brittany Nicole Hodges and six brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her sons Tommy Middleton and his wife Sharon, who was like a daughter and Sammy Middleton; two daughters, Margaret Sztuk and Marchia Soto; one sister, Lavon Suddath; 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, which include those who were very dear to her, Mike Middleton, Bobby Joe Shifflett; Tommy Middleton Jr., Michael Hodges, Michelle Hodges; Erica Hodges, Katie Middleton, Jay Shifflett, Travis Shifflett, Alexander Summers, Crystal Bowne, Robert Summers who is stationed on the USS Enterprise, Larry Summers and wife Sylvia, Christina Bowne, Catherine Lloyd, Kim Poole, and Pamela Kelly. She also leaves to cherish her memory, Alyse and Erika who were very dear to her.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2003, at Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Greenwood.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Teague Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Matthew Goodman and Hospice of the Piedmont. In addition they would like to say a special thank you to Crystal Thurston, Lola Farrish and the staff of Mountainside Senior Living.

Julian C. Dorman

J. Carr Dorman, 74, died Friday, November 21, 2003, at a local hospital.

Born in 1929, he was a 1947 graduate of Woodberry Forest School, and attended the University of Virginia where he was on the wrestling team, a member of Eli Banana, and vice-president of his fraternity. Following graduation in 1952, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1954, being discharged as a Captain before entering University of Virginia Law School from which he graduated in 1957.

His career was spent in personal trust administration and estate settlement, primarily with the Peoples Bank of Charlottesville where he was a Vice-President and Trust Officer, and with Albemarle Bank and Trust Co. He retired in 1985 as Trust Officer and President of Albemarle Bank and Trust.

He was past President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Estate Planning Council, Chairman of the Albemarle County Draft Board during the Vietnam conflict, President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Weekday Religious Education Board, and is an Elder and Trustee of Cove Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Jesse and Mitch; four daughters, Laura, Molly, Julia and Rebecca; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at Cove Presbyterian Church, Covesville, Va. on Monday, November 24, 2003, with Rev. Marcy Orr officiating. Interment icon will be private.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Martha Jefferson Hospital 459 Locust Avenue Charlottesville, Virginia 22901 or Cove Presbyterian Church 5531 Covesville Lane, Covesville, Virginia 22931.

Jean Marie Douglas

Jean Marie Douglas, 66, of Charlottesville died Thursday, November 19, 2003, in the Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville. She was born May 21, 1937, in Louisa County as was a daughter of the late Arthur Quarles and Alberta Allen Quarles. She was married to the late Leander Kenneth Douglas and was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Gordonsville.

She is survived by two daughtes, Linda F. Mitchell of Springfield and Debbie A. Smith of Gordonsville; four sons, Kenneth D. Douglas and Ronald L. Douglas both of Charlottesville, John A. Douglas of Alexandria and Craig M. Douglas of Fluvanna; twenty-one grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; she was also preceded in death by a sister, Erma Johnson.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2003, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange with interment in St. John Baptist Church cemetery, Cobham. The Rev. Stanley Woodfolk will officiate. The family will receive friends after the funeral service. Preddy Funeral Home Orange is in charge of arrangements.

Martha Neal Dugan

Martha Dugan, a resident of the Colonnades in Charlottesville, Va., died at home on November 6, 2003.

She is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Kitty) Clark Stroud and her husband, Robert E. Stroud, of Charlottesville, Va.; a grandson, Robert G. Stroud and his wife Jennifer A. Stroud of Boulder, Colo.; a granddaughter, Margaret L. Stroud and her husband, William S. Grimes; and a great grandson, Andrew H. Grimes, all of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, James M. Deaton Jr. of Statesville, N.C.; a niece who was particularly close to her, Mary A. Deaton of Statesville, N.C.; and other nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arthur B. Dugan/Martha N. Dugan Scholarship, University of the South, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee, Tenn., 37383-1000; or the Youth Orchestra of Charlottesville-Albemarle, P.O. Box 4845, Charlottesville, Va. 22905; or to a charity of your choice.

Lucille Lang Kelly

Lucille Hazel Lang Kelly, 97, of Crozet died Friday, November 21, 2003, at Gibson Adult Care Home in Crozet, Va. She was born march 28, 1906, in Albemarle County, the daughter of Lillian and Lula Norford Lang. She was preceded in death by her husband, Major Frank Joseph Kelly, who died in December 1944; her son, Carroll Lynwood Walton, who gave his life in service to his country July 1944 in Italy; and a dear friend, Virgil L. James Sr., who died February 1995. She was also preceded in death by six sisters; and one brother.

Mrs. Kelly (preferably known as "Kelly") was a member of Crozet Baptist Church, the Ladies Bible Class, and the Senior Adult Friendship Club, she was a member of Ladies Auxiliary #1827 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion Auxiliary in Arlington, Va. Post #139. She was a resident of Arlington, Va., 1939-1957 during which time she operated a rooming house, since 1957 she resided at 5702 Wayland Drive, Crozet and provided rooms in her home for Virginia State Policemen. Kelly was presented a Citizen Appreciation Award Certificate of Merit by the Virginia State Police Association on March 26, 1994, in recognition of her special support of the Virginia State Police employees by providing housing which made their lives more enjoyable and pleasant.

She is survived by a cousin, Virgie Shipp of Barboursville; and very close friends whom she considered family, V.L. and Betty James, R. Downer and Patricia James and Lynn Rutherford-Durham, she is also survived by their children, Lee and Anne Oprandy James, Mark and Holly James McMickle, and Ashley Durham whom she considered as grandchildren; she is also survived by special friends and neighbors, Ella Bailey, Waverly Davis, Grace Byers, and Bernice Rea.

Special thanks to Mary Ann Gibson and her staff at Gibson Adult Care Home for the wonderful care she received there from August 2001 until the time of her death.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2003, at Crozet Baptist Church with Dr. Roy S. Thomas III officiating and interment will follow at Riverview cemetery in Charlottesville, Va. Visitation will be held at the church at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Anderson Funeral Service of Crozet is in charge of arrangements. Those who wish may make contributions to Crozet Baptist Church, 5804 St. George Ave. Crozet, Va. 22932.

Mary Ott Kemp

Mary Katherine Ott Kemp, 97, of Charlottesville, Va. died on Saturday, November 22, 2003, in a local nursing facility.

Born April 1, 1906, in Winnetka, Ill., she was the daughter of the late John N. Ott and J. Wilhelmina Forgan Ott. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W. Thomas Kemp Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Ott; a brother, John Ott; and a granddaughter, Molly.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Kemp had attended North Shore Country Day School in Chicago, Ill., and later Vassar College. Having formerly resided in Baltimore, Md., and Saint Louis, Mo., she moved to Charlottesville in 1999. A member of the Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore, Md., she was also an active Hospital Auxiliary Volunteer for many years in that city.

She is survived by two daughters, Elsie Kemp Schmitz of Saint Louis, Mo., and Mary Louise Kemp Maroney and her husband, Samuel, of Charlottesville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Charlottesville and Saint Louis. The family suggests that any memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

The family is being assisted with arrangements by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Marvin Rosenblum

Marvin Rosenblum, 77, of Earlysville, died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at home.

He was born on June 30, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Isidore and Celia (Mendelsohn) Rosenblum.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Parker) Rosenblum; children, Dore Rosenblum, his wife, Terrie, and their children, Alex and Staton, of Pleasanton, Calif., Mendel Rosenblum, his wife, Diane, and their children, Nathan and Mara, of Stanford, Calif., Jessie Rosenblum Scala, her husband, John, and their children, Andrew, Meagan, Daniel, and Catherine of Lancaster, Pa., Becca Rosenblum Galluscio, her husband, Tony, and their children, Bobby, Katie, Stevie, and Charlie of Indialantic, Fla., and Sarah Rosenblum Lloyd, her husband, Drew, and their children, Ethan, Kenzie, and Rachel of Camden, N.C.; the Parker and Mendelsohn families, and a host of valued colleagues and friends.

After attending UCLA, he served in the US Navy from 1944-1946. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1949 with a BS in electrical engineering. He began studying mathematics and received his MA in 1951 and his Ph. D. in 1955 in Mathematics. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia in 1955 and was promoted through the ranks to become Commonwealth Professor in 1978. He continued in the position until retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2000. He taught and did research at the University for 45 years. He served as Departmental Chair 1969-1973 and provided distinguished leadership and service to the University throughout his career. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) in 1959-60, a member of the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and an editor for the journal, Integral Equations and Operator Theory.

He was known internationally as an expert in operator theory and analysis. His discovery that absolutely continuous spectra are stable under small perturbations is one of the cornerstones of perturbation theory. This early discovery was followed by a series of papers on operator equations, spectral theory, and complex function theory, containing insights that today are standard. His papers are admired for a mathematical style that is at once crisp and elegant. His research was supported by numerous grants from the National Science Foundation. He was an extraordinary teacher of modern analysis, and he inspired and directed 18 doctoral dissertations. In the words of one former student, he was a "role model in treating all people fairly, with grace, respect, intelligence, kindness, and good humor."

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, November 23, at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home Chapel, with Heena Reiter officiating and interment will follow at the Hebrew cemetery in Charlottesville, Va. The family will host a reception afterwards at the Colonnade Club, University of Virginia Pavilion VII from 1 to 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in honor of Marvin Rosenblum to: Dept. of Mathematics, Acct # 6044, University of Virginia Alumni Association, P.O. Box 3446, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Virginia S. Shiflett

A memorial service will be held today November 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Prize Hill Church for Virginia Snow (Genevive) Shiflett who died February 22, 2003, in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Randolph (Walter) Shiflett of Charlottesville, Va. Both she and her husband were former employees of Acme Visible Records in Crozet, Va.

Her wishes to be buried beside her husband in the Prize Hill cemetery will be private. Services will be handled by her stepdaughter, Naomi Shiflett Roberts, with Rev. C.C. Kurtz officiating.

In addition, she is survived by three step grandchildren; and nieces and nephews both in Virginia and Maryland.

A previous obituary was in the Daily Progress in February 2003. Family members will meet at the church with friends before the services at Prize Hill Church.

James H. Williams

James Howard Williams died at his home, Friday, November 21, 2003.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today November 23, 2003, at Holly Memorial Gardens.

In addition to flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Barnabas Project, Charlottesville First Assembly, 1010 Rio Road East, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Bernice E. Moore

Bernice E. Moore, 62, slipped quietly away from life on Monday, November 17, 2003. She was born march 7, 1941, to the late Samuel H. and Hattie E. Moore. She was educated in the Louisa County School System and was a member of Rising Sun Baptist Church, Mineral.

Bernice leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Fannie Moore of Mineral; one brother, Robert Samuel Moore of Mineral; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Rising Sun Baptist Church, Mineral with Rev. Frederick Sales officiating, interment will follow in the church cemetery. Thomasson's Funeral Service Inc., Louisa, is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin Rosenblum

Marvin Rosenblum, 77, of Earlysville, died peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at home.
