Margaret A. Twohy

Margaret Addington Twohy died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Norfolk on Oct. 3, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Joseph C. Addington and Helen M. Addington and the widow of John Twohy IV.

Mrs. Twohy graduated from Maury High School and Sweet Briar College. She was a lifelong member of the Christadelphian Church of Hampton Roads. She married John Twohy IV in 1948, and they had six daughters. In the mid-1960s Peggy became involved with other Norfolk residents in successfully opposing the city’s plans to realign part of Freemason Street and to demolish many of its adjacent historic homes. Always interested in history and architecture, particularly the Ghent area, she lobbed for the creation of the Freemason and Mowbray Arch Historic Districts and served as the founding president of the board of Chrysler Museum Historic House Committee. She also served on the board of Norfolk Historical Society, Norfolk Preservation Alliance, and Friends of Norfolk Historic Cemeteries. Mrs. Towhy served as president of the Junior Garden Club of Norfolk and the Garden Club of Norfolk. She also belonged to the Garden Club of Virginia and the Garden Club of America. In 2000, she was awarded the Zone VII Historical Preservation Award from the Garden Club of America, recognizing her life-long efforts to preserve and restore historic gardens and buildings.

In 1967, she was appointed to the Norfolk School Board and served for six years. This position afforded Mrs. Twohy the opportunity to act on her lifetime interest in the importance of early childhood educator and reading enrichment. She was involved with many other charitable and civic programs including Leaders for Learners, an richment program with the Norfolk City Schools.

In the early 1970s, Peggy went to work in the family business along side her husband, John. She continued to work at Capital Concrete until shortly before her death.

She loved reading, history and antiques, which led to her passion for travel, especially to Europe. She and her husband John traveled together frequently until his death in 1998. Peggy continued her travels with her friends, daughters and grandchildren, including a trip this past summer to Russia.

She will be remembered by her daughters, nieces, and nephews as a strong matriarch who led by example and taught them the value of family and hard work; by her sons-in-laws as a gracious lady whose advise was highly valued; by her grandchildren as their generous and loving "Gramma, " in whose home they were always welcome; and by others as a kind and wonderful friend with a firm commitment to her beliefs and values. Her family and friends will dearly miss their resident expert on manners, architecture, history, and antiques.

Mrs. Twohy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, William F. Addington of Cocoa Beach, Fla. She is survived by her six daughters, Merrick T. Murray of Earlysville, Jane Clark Tirrell of Charlottesville, Elizabeth A. (Boo) Twohy, Dabney T. Napoitano, Helen T. Whittemore, all of Virginia Beach, Margaret T. Devan of Basalt, Colo., and their six husbands and 14 grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brother. Joseph C. Addington Jr. of Virginia Beach, and her sister, Helen A. Passano of Baltimore, Md.

The family would like to express gratitude for the dedicated service and care of the nurses, doctors, and staff of the Oncology Ward of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. They would also like to especially thank Mrs. Inez Bishop for her loving care during their mother’s illness and Dr. Rice for his guidance and friendship.
