Nathaniel Lee Whalen

Nathaniel Lee Whalen, 42, of Louisa, was called home Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at his residence.

Born on July 16, 1961, in St. Mary’s County, Md., he was the son of Vida Harris Whalen and the late James Hubert Whalen.

Nathaniel was a member of Zion Traveler’s Baptist Church of Louisa and affiliated with Wake Forest Baptist Church.

Nathaniel leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 19 years, Michelle Bowler Whalen; one daughter, Tameka Patrice Whalen, 19; two sons, Michael Tyrone Whalen, 21, and Maurice Nathaniel Whalen, 20, all of Gordonsville; four brothers, James Whalen of College Park, Md., John Whalen and sister-in-law, Gail, of Lynchburg, Joseph Whalen of Louisa and Gregory Whalen and sister-in-law, Rosetta, of Fredericksburg; four sisters, Vanessa Robinson, Janice Wells, Caroline Harris and brother-in-law, Wilbert, and Doris Henson and brother-in-law, Gerald, all of Louisa; mother-in-law, Frances Collins Bowler; two brother-in-laws, Troy Collines, Kelly Bowler, all of Gordonsville; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Preddy Funeral Home in Orange, with the Rev. Frank Lewis officiating. Interment icon will be private.

The family will receive friends following the service at the Zion Travelers Baptist Church dining hall, 3262 Roundabout Road, Louisa.

The family would like to thank each and every one for their support, prayers, kindness, donations, food and gifts. May God bless each and every one of you.

Tanya L. Barker

Tanya Lynn Barker, 31, of Schuyler, departed this life Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Born in Schuyler on April 21, 1972, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Patricia Barker.

Tanya leaves to cherish her memory her brother and sister-in-law, Mitch and Tina Barker of Afton; her sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Frank Adcock Jr. of Louisa; a maternal grandparent, Grace Bufford of Howardsville; two uncles, Samuel Barker of Verona and Gary Kidd of Schuyler; one aunt, Shirley Able of Scottsville; three nephews, Zachary, Hunter, and Morgan Barker; her friend and companion, Wayne Phillips and his son, Nathan Phillips, of Schuyler; along with many special friends and relatives.

Tanya graduated from Nelson County High School and attended Piedmont College. She was a dental assistant who especially enjoyed working with children. She was an outgoing individual who was free spirited and loved by all. Her memory will be cherished forever.

The memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Whitney Critzer at 7 p.m. this evening at Church of the Blue Ridge, Route 151 in Afton. Friends and family will be received downstairs in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Afton Christian School, c/o Mitch Barker, 988 Crawford’s View Road, Afton, VA 22920.

Charles H. Bishop

Charles Henry Bishop, 86, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at The Colonnades.

Born on July 12, 1917, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Joseph Bishop and Naomi Bellomy Bishop. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Gooch Bishop; a brother, Willard "Bill" Bishop; and a sister, Gertrude Bishop.

Mr. Bishop was a retired building superintendent for the Physicians and Surgeons Building. He served with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was a long-time member of Belmont Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughters, Betty Hodges and her husband, Gary, of Covington, Carolyn Pippen and her husband, Joel, of Culpeper, and Donna Sandloop and her husband, Len, of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Catherine Chiti of Fla., and Nancy Harris of Albemarle; three brothers, Walter Bishop and George Bishop, both of Charlottesville, and Raymond Bishop of Staunton; four grandchildren, Michael Pippen, Jill Saric, Becky Fisher and Beth Pullin; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rudy Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Jane D. Clark

A graveside funeral service for Jane Dawson Clark will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Thomas F. Shull

Thomas "Tommy" Franklin Shull, 52, of Charlottesville, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at a local hospital.

Born on April 13, 1951, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Cole Wilson and Bessie L. Brown Shull. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jean Irving.

He was an auto mechanic at Shull’s Automotive. He enjoyed drag and stock car racing and helping others work on their cars.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Hensley Shull of Charlottesville; two daughters, Shaina R. Shull and Shannon D. Shull; a son, Thomas Franklin Shull II, all of Charlottesville; four brothers, Charles W. Shull and his wife, Nancy, of Ruckersville, David L. Shull and his wife, Marie, of Winchester, Daniel Lee Shull and his wife, Pat, of Charlottesville, and Gary Wayne Shull and his wife, Merica, of Troy; a brother-in-law, Gregory P. Irving of Charlottesville; a loving aunt, Barbara Chisholm of Waynesboro; a number of nieces and nephews, and numerous devoted friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Belmont Baptist Church, with Pastor Jim Moretz officiating. Interment icon will follow at Riverview cemetery.

Hill & Wood Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret M. Taylor

A funeral service for Margaret Mason Taylor will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Fishwick and the Rev. Brian Vander Wel officiating.

Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

Andrew L. Thacker

Andrew L. "Bunny" Thacker, 71, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in a local hospital.

Born on Dec. 17, 1932, in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Walter M. Thacker and Mamie E. Hunt Thacker.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. Thacker; three brothers, Walter M. Thacker Jr., Asa J. Thacker and John H. Thacker; and one sister, Lyvonne E. Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Thacker; two sons, Dwaine S. Thacker and his wife, Laura, and Andrew L. Thacker Jr.; three daughters, Sandra G. Morris and her husband, Coleman, Carolyn A. Deane and her husband, Robert, and Maureen Jamieson; two brothers, Ben W. Thacker and his wife, Gladys, and Little Page Thacker and his wife, Edna; eight grandchildren, Susan Thacker, Buffy Thacker, Olivia Thacker, Randy Morris, Tiffany Morris, Lacresha Thacker, Waynie Wood and Nikki Thacker; and two great-grandchildren, Cody Thacker and Dylan Fenner.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Holly Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Bill Willis officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Teague Funeral Home.

Larry Tony Brown

Larry Tony Brown, 53, of Palmyra, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, in Charlottesville.

Born on May 11, 1950, he was the son of Mrs. Ethel Pearl Brown and the late Howard J. Brown. He is also survived by a son, Larry J. Brown Jr.; four grandchildren, Ahmad Dillard, Dejure and Dejuan Sims and Diamond Brown, all of Charlottesville; a devoted friend, Othella P. Brown; also two aunts, Lillian Logan and Rosa Murray, both of Palmyra; and two uncles, Joe Washington of Cleveland, Ohio, and Roy Washington of Washington, D.C.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at New Fork Baptist Church, Palmyra. Interment icon will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Colbert Funeral Home, Bremo Bluff, today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Margaret M. Taylor

Margaret Mason Taylor, 84, of Charlottesville, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Winterhaven Assisted Living Home.

Born on April 1, 1919, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late William Edward Taylor and Kate Stanley Taylor. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Margaret was a 1941 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She did private duty nursing and prior to her retirement, she was in charge of the Hematology Lab at the UVa Hospital.

Margaret was a life member of Christ Episcopal Church and the University of Virginia Alumni Association.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Evylin T. McClellan of Bristol, Tenn., and Mrs. Christine T. Bloomer of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a beloved sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Taylor of Charlottesville; and a number of nieces, nephews, many friends and neighbors.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Fishwick and the Rev. Brian Vander Wel officiating.

Burial will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Miller School of Albemarle, 1000 Samuel Miller Loop, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or to the University of Virginia School of Nursing, c/o the Alumni and Development Office, P.O. Philip J. Vaglio

Graveside services for Philip J. Vaglio will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. today at Culpeper National cemetery.

John T. Valentinsen

John T. Valentinsen, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at his home in Stanardsville.

Born in Skudneshave, Norway, John immigrated to America when he was only 8. He worked as Art Director of several major Philadelphia-based lithographers, including Joseph Hoover and Company. A remarkably talented watercolor artist, John was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Englewood Florida, Artisans Group. Prior to moving to the Blue Ridge Mountain area of Virginia to be closer to his family, John had resided in Englewood, Fla., for over twenty years. He was active in the Englewood United Methodist Church (UMC) and was a dedicated member of UMC’s Men’s Fellowship. More recently, he joined the Stanardsville United Methodist Church.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Bette; loving children, Gail of Charlottesville, and Barry and his wife, Arlene, of Monteclare, N.J.; an adoring grandson, Christopher of Charlottesville; and a beloved sister, Thordis Marshall of Englewood, Fla.

His family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Charles Henry Bishop, 86, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at the Colonnades.

Cornelia W. Booth

Cornelia W. "Dee" Booth died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, of complications from the flu.

Born Cornelia Winston Clark on June 9, 1909, in White Hall, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Flave Ella Smith Clark.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; and sisters, Josephine Clark, Irene Wyant, Nella Smith, Helen Clark; brothers, Harry Clark, Hugh Clark, Jack Clark; and her grandson, David Sielewicz.

As a youth she lived with her older sister, Mrs. Josephine Clark Dowell, and attended Charlottesville schools. In 1932 she married Jesse B. Wilson II, who died in 1950. She married William A. Booth in 1953, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 2003.

She loved spending time with her family and friends, playing golf and bridge. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the University of Virginia, attending football and basketball events. She maintained a lovely home and garden and was delighted by entertaining. She was an inspiring individual.

Dee organized and developed the Charlottesville Welcome Wagon and Newcomer’s Club, was a member of Mount Moriah United Methodist Church and Christ Episcopal Church, The Senior Center, Farmington Country Club, Newcomer’s Club of Charlottesville and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, William A. Booth; her son, Jesse B. Wilson III and his wife, Laura, of Purcellville; her daughter, Joyce W. Sielewicz and her husband, Edwin, of Newport, N.H.; a grandson, Michael Wilson Sielewicz; a sister-in-law, Hazeltine Clark of White Hall; a cousin, Virginia Ballard; two nieces, Nancy Miller and Betty Jo Hensley; and two nephews, Donald Clark and Andrew J. Clark Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Brenneke officiating. Interment icon will follow at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, 4492 Garth Rd. Charlottesville, Va. 22901or The Senior Center, 1180 Pepsi Place, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
