Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Cristina O. Mobley

Cristina O. Mobley, 96, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004.

Born on July 24, 1907, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Mobley, and two stepchildren, Betty Morgan and Patricia Long.

Her remarkable spirit and curiosity was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Laura Bradley of Wayne, Pa., Antonio Quiogue of Bayside, N.Y., Rolando Quiogue of Oakland, Calif., and Frances Helvin of Charlottesville; two stepchildren, Nancy Hamilton of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Robert W. Mobley of Great Falls; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment icon will be private at Culpeper National cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Place, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Martha Montoya

Martha Montoya, 63, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at her home.

Born on Feb. 8, 1940, in Medellin, Colombia, she was the daughter of the late Antonio Montoya and Maria Dolores Rios Montoya. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Antonio Polania.

She is survived by a son, Birzayith; a daughter, Jaidy Gutierrez; a sister, Edilma, all of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the Church of the Incarnation with Father Dennis Murphy officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Wilmer E. Moomaw

Wilmer Elwood Moomaw, 86, died at his home in Orkney Springs on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004. He was born on May 13, 1917, in Orkney Springs, the son of the late Charles Thomas and Minnie Florence Funkhouser Moomaw. He was married to Nellie Mae Stickley Moomaw on Nov. 14, 1935.

Mr. Moomaw graduated from Triplett High School in Mt. Jackson in 1935. He became the director of Shrine Mont in 1950, succeeding Shrine Mont’s founder, Dr. Edmund Lee Woodward. Mr. Moomaw served as Shrine Mont’s director until his retirement in 1988. Prior to that he had worked in several capacities at Shrine Mont for over 25 years, for a total service to the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia of 65 years. During his years as director of Shrine Mont, Mr. Moomaw oversaw the purchase and renovation of the Orkney Springs Hotel property.

Mr. Moomaw was appointed postmaster of Orkney Springs in 1939, a position he held until his retirement in 1965. He operated the general store in Orkney Springs from 1948 to 1965. He was a charter member and first president of both the Orkney Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the West Shenandoah Ruritan Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Donald Richard Moomaw and his wife, Thelma, of Orkney Springs, Wilmer Edmund Moomaw and his wife, Suzanne, of Charlottesville, John Thomas Moomaw and his wife, Judi, of Orkney Springs, and Carolyn Moomaw Chilton and her husband, John, of Orkney Springs; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Moomaw Gregory, Karen Moomaw Rose, Kevin Donald Moomaw, John Thomas Moomaw Jr., Elizabeth Moomaw Peyton, Ann Marie Moomaw, Amy Moomaw Goodnight, Virginia Stickley Chilton and Wilmer Edmund Moomaw; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Randolph Moomaw of Bloomville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by another brother, Leo Vincent Moomaw.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration in Orkney Springs with the Right Rev. Peter James Lee, bishop of Virginia, presiding. The family will receive friends at home in the afternoons from 2 to 5 and following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Shrine Mont, P.O. Box 10, Orkney Springs, VA 22845, or to the Orkney Springs Fire Department, Orkney Springs, VA 22845, or to the Orkney Springs Basye Rescue Squad, Orkney Springs, VA 22845.

Elfrieda C. Romanac

Elfrieda C. Romanac, 86, a homemaker, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.

A native of Long Island, N.Y., she moved to Ocala from Orlando in 1993. Mrs. Romanac was Methodist. She also lived in Charlottesville in the 1960s.

Survivors include her sons, Nicholas J. Romanac, Fort Lauderdale, Robert N. Romanac, Charlottesville, and Thomas M. Romanac, Ocala; a sister, Edna Sbarbori, Port Charlotte; a brother, Robert Hackmack, Long Island; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, James Alfred and Martin R. Romanac.

Sidney Rodger Smith

Sidney Rodger Smith, 67, of Nellysford, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Born on Feb. 10, 1936, in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Howard C. Smith and Mary Tinnell Smith.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean Conflict, a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church near Lovingston and a retired equipment operator with Faulconer Construction of Charlottesville.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Berry Smith; four daughters and their husbands, Norma Truslow and William, Diane Purvis and James, Tammy Matheny and Jerry, all of Nellysford, and Linda Smith and fiance Tom Haley of Charlottesville; one grandson, James Rodger Truslow, and three granddaughters, Dianna Truslow, Jennifer Benson and Christine Wade, all of Nellysford; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Truslow and Amber Truslow.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with Dr. Timothy G. Mink officiating. Interment icon will be in Ridgecrest cemetery with Military Rites accorded by VFW Post #7701 of Colleen.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the funeral home and suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Wintergreen Rescue Squad, The Rockfish Valley Fire Department or Hospice of the Piedmont.

Florence M.M. Snow

Florence Mary McDaniel Snow, 81, of Orange, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Born on April 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Charles Frank McDaniel and the late Pearl Brookman McDaniel.

Her husband was the late Kemper Edward Snow. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Lena Edmonds.

Mrs. Snow was a member of Orange Baptist Church and was retired from the American Silk Mill in Orange.

Mrs. Snow is survived by one daughter, Linda Faye Snow of Orange; two sons, Charles E. Snow of Louisa and Roger L. Snow and wife Sylvia of Orange; one brother, Willie McDaniel of Orange; three sisters, Dorothy Nicholson of Louisa, Jane Holiday of Rapidan and Thyra Lee Mallory of Rhoadesville; two grandchildren, Cindy Proffitt and Mark Snow; and one great-grandson, Jacob Proffitt.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange. Interment icon will be in Graham cemetery. Pastor Earl Baker will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at the funeral home.

William A. Thompkins

William Andrew Thompkins, 97, of North Garden, departed this life Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Heritage Hall Nursing Facility, Charlottesville.

He was born in Albemarle County on Oct. 12, 1906, the son of the late Andrew and Annie Thompkins.

Mr. Thompkins was preceded in death by his son, William L. Thompkins, one granddaughter, Elizabeth Thompkins, five brothers and seven sisters.

He retired from Blue Ridge Sanatorium after 24 years of service, and then worked part-time at the University of Virginia for a number of years. He was a faithful member of South Garden Baptist Church, North Garden, where he served on its Usher Board. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

His survivors include his wife of 68 years, Mrs. Annie B. Thompkins of North Garden; three daughters, the Rev. Shirley A. Turner and her husband, Erskin, of North Garden, Mrs. Geneva C. Thompson and her husband, Ordell, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ms. Patricia E. Thompkins of North Garden; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Scott of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Marion Walker of Petersburg, Va.; one brother-in-law, Mr. Terrell Robinson of McKeesport, Pa.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at noon today Jan. 14, 2004, at South Garden Baptist Church, North Garden, with the Rev. Mary Byers officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Zion Baptist Church cemetery, North Garden. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the start of the service.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of Heritage Hall nursing facility, for taking such good care of their loved one for the past 10 years. May God bless each of you.

Margaret K. Brogan

Margaret Katie Powell Brogan, 78, of River Road, Faber, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at her residence.

Born on Sept. 6, 1925, in Nelson County (Davis Creek Community), she was a daughter of the late Frank Powell and Lillian Perry Powell. She was the widow of Cecil William (C.W.) Brogan Jr., who died on May 17, 1997. She was a member of Adial Baptist Church and a devoted homemaker to her husband and children.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Gary Lee Brogan on June 24, 2001.

She is survived by her son C.W. Brogan and wife Anna of Faber; her daughters, Dianne Davis and husband Ron and Joyce Vance and husband Sidney, all of Ruckersville; five grandchildren, Wayne Lawhorne and wife Rhonda, Missy Brads and husband Chris, Stacy B. Smith and husband Brian, Paul Brogan and Miranda Brogan.

She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Lawhorne, and a special friend, Roy Armstrong.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. Jim Bushong officiating, with interment in the Oak Hill cemetery near Lovingston. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carrie Dixon

Carrie Dixon, 82, formerly of Rainelle, W.Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at The Village Nursing Center in Fork Union.

Born on Sept. 18, 1921, in Trout, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Raleigh and Mary Ann Stiltner Clevenger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Dixon, one brother and three sisters.

She is survived by one daughter, Louise Marchi, and her husband, Joseph, and their daughters Stephanie of Troy and Rachel Oliff of Orange. She is also survived by a sister, Hattie Rudd of Williamsburg, W.Va., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held in West Virginia on Monday, Dec. 30, 2003, with the Rev. Dana Gatewood officiating.

Hill & Wood is in charge of local arrangements.

Alice F. Dorrier

Alice Forbes Dorrier, 95, of Brookview Lodge, Farmville, and Scottsville, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.

The widow of John W. Dorrier, she was the daughter of the late James H. Forbes and Julia Gilliam Forbes. Mrs. Dorrier is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. J. Branch Forbes of Andersonville, in addition to her nieces Sandra F. Moss of Dillwyn, Susan F. Bomar of Andersonville and Nan F. Bradley of Midlothian. Mrs. Dorrier is also survived by a great-nephew, Billy Moss and great-nieces Melanie Farrish, Robin Allen and Amy Lawhorne, all of Dillwyn. Members of her extended family were Bea and Phil Keaton of Lake Monticello. Bea was Alice’s companion and friend for many years.

Mrs. Dorrier received her formal education at the School for the Deaf at Staunton. She was active in the deaf community and was a member of the Blue Ridge Senior Deaf Group. In later years, she came to regard Brookview as her home and enjoyed her many excursions with Bea.

During 2003 Alice received additional care from two very special people, Leigh Ann Brown and Peggy Borum.

A funeral service will be held at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. Interment icon will be in the New Store Presbyterian Church cemetery, Route 609 in Buckingham County. Remembrances may be made to New Store Presbyterian Church, Route 3, Box 8240, Dillwyn, VA 23936 or School for the Deaf, P.O. Box 2069, Staunton, VA 24402.

R. Melvin Goff

A funeral service for R. Melvin Goff will be held at 2 p.m. today at Rock Spring United Methodist Church in Faber with the Rev. Daniel Abbott officiating. Interment icon will follow in the Rock Spring cemetery with Masonic Rites being accorded by Rockfish Masonic Lodge #108 AF&AM.

Arrangements are by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston (434-263-4097).

Ruby Hunt Harris

Ruby Hunt Harris, 89, of Charlottesville, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Evergreene Nursing Home in Stanardsville.

She was born on May 14, 1914, in Dickenson County, the daughter of the late Lemuel Lincoln Campbell and Tiney Puckett Campbell. She is also preceded in death by her husbands, Luther M. Hunt Sr. and John A. Harris; one son, Kenneth V. Hunt; and five brothers, Lee Campbell, Charles Howard Campbell, Odna Campbell, Carl Campbell and Gene Leighton Campbell.

Survivors include one son, Luther M. "Snooks" Hunt Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Kenneth V. Hunt Jr. and his wife, Suzanne, Karen B. Gillispie and her husband, Ron, Gary M. Hunt and his wife, Debbie, and Judi L. Price and her husband, Scott; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Rusby Marie "Bunny" Hunt of Lynchburg; two sisters-in-law, Alice H. Campbell of Earlysville and Louise S. Campbell of Ruckersville; and a beloved cousin, Bonnie Rose of Clintwood.

Mrs. Harris was a longtime real estate agent for Wilson Cropp, and after a successful career she entered the antiques business until her retirement. Mrs. Harris was a longtime, active member of Mooreland Baptist Church in North Garden.

The family would like to extend to the staff of Evergreene Meadows a deep and heartfelt thank you for their gentle and loving care.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Mooreland Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarke Hawkins and the Rev. Jake Stewart officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 4 to 5 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Mooreland Baptist Church, 2255 Taylors Gap Road, North Garden, VA 22959.

Samuel Lawhorne

Samuel Lawhorne of Charlottesville died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Trinity Mission Health & Rehabilitation.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Lawhorne Family cemetery on Cox’s Creek.

Joseph C. Mallon

Joseph Charles Mallon, 76, of Reidsville, father of Pamela A. Haynes of Madison, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in a Rappahannock hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. Interment icon will be at Etlan cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
