Lewis Allen Walker

Lewis Allen Walker, 65, of Gordonsville, passed away to be with the Lord Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville.

He was born April 30, 1938, in Louisa County, and was a son of the late Charles Bennie Walker and Ethel Gibson Walker.

Mr. Walker retired with more than 33 years of service from Orkin Exterminating, served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Andrews Chapel in the Thelma area. He never met a stranger and loved to talk with everyone he met. He touched the hearts of all who knew him. The family wants to thank the Hope Center at the Martha Jefferson Hospital, the 7th floor nurses and the Hospice Support Group.

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley June Walker of Gordonsville; two sons, Edward Allen Walker and his wife, Dreama, of Charlottesville, Glen Eric Walker and his wife, Portia, of Troy; two brothers, Floyd Daniel Walker of Keswick and John Harry Walker of Corpwell, Ala.; four sisters, Shirley Johnson of Troy, Marie Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla., Dorothy Thomas of Keswick, and Elizabeth Shifflett of Crozet; one half-brother, Russell Breeden of Keswick; one half-sister, Rachael Gasper of Arlington; four grandchildren; and a very special and devoted sister-in-law, Anna Walker; and a niece, Eula Payne.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, James Wesley Walker, Charles Bryant Walker, and Bennie Eugene Walker; half-brother, Robert Walker; half-sister, Rebecca Breeden; and a grandchild, Natasha Katrina Walker.

Mr. Walker also leaves behind his cherished pets, Quincy Lee, Chrissy Noel, Chili Pepper and Sniffles Boy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Orange, with interment in the Walker Family cemetery, Thelma, officiated by the Rev. Bruce Hunter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

David C. Weber

A memorial service for David Weber, son of Gertrude and F. Palmer Weber, will be held at Malvern Farm at 1 p.m. today. Malvern Farm is located at the northwest corner of Dick Woods Road (Route 637) and Dry Bridge Road (Route 708) in Ivy.

Bessie Wood

Funeral services for Bessie Mae Keyseear Wood will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, from the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, Orange, with interment in Graham cemetery. Pastor Dallas Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel, 250 W. Main St., Orange.

Burley W. Arnette

Burley William Arnette, 78, departed this life on Monday, March 23, 2004, at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.

He was born January 29, 1926, to the late Sidney B. and Massie Boyd Arnette. Three brothers, Carl, Sidney and Austin Arnette, preceded him in death.

He is survived by one brother, Ralph Arnette of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Flossie Quarles of Kents Store, Va.; three nephews, Russell Quarles, Larry Quarles and Lloyd (Anne) Quarles; six nieces, Thelma Grant, Elsie Scott, Kathryn (Lawrence) Johnson, Jennifer Arnette, Jacqueline Quarles and Winifred Quarles; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Otis Spellman at Galilee Baptist Church, Ferncliff, Va., at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, with viewing one hour prior to service. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

A special thanks to Dr. Kevin McConnell and the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.

Winfred L. Foster

Winfred Lewis Foster, 63, formally of Shipman, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Md.

Born Nov. 29, 1940, in Charlottesville, he was a son of Mildred F. Foster of Shipman/Silver Spring, Md., and the late Preston Foster.

He was a graduate of Nelson County High School, Member of Bright Hope Baptist Church and an employee of The Sheraton Park Hotel in Washington.

Besides his mother Mildred M. Foster of Shipman, he is survived by two daughters, Teresa Essex and her husband, Lewis, of Arrington and Michele Foster of Lovingston; two sons, Steven Foster and his wife, Tonya, of Palmyra and Jason Foster of Washington, D.C.; a step-son, the Rev. Marcus Barber of Prince George Co., Md.; a sister, Lillian L. Foster of Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, Thurman G. Foster of Alexandria; his uncle, Rev. William M. Foster and his wife, Elsie, of Shipman; a devoted cousin, Rennie D. Scott of Shipman; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alice Foster and Catherine Foster and several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bright Hope Baptist Church in Lovingston with the Rev. William M. Foster officiating, with Interment icon in the Foster Family cemetery in Shipman.

The family will receive friends one hour before time of service at Bright Hope Baptist Church.

Edsel Ford Harrington

Edsel Ford "Pike" Harrington, of Lindsay, Va., died Wednesday, March 24, 2004. He was the son of the late Lucius Marvin and Juanita Cornett Harrington. He was born Nov. 27, 1915, in Lindsay, Va.

He was married to Mae Helms Shelton Harrington who passed on March 8, 2004.

He is survived by his children, Lindsay Marvin Harrington and his wife, Debbie, of Punta Gorda, Fla., Thomas Lee Shelton and his wife, Sherry of Richmond, Va., Eugene Marvin Shelton and his wife, Bonnie, of Williamsburg, Va., Lynda Harrington Lattimore of Richmond, Va., Joan Harrington Buchanan and her husband, L. Banks, of Richmond, Va., Carolyn Ann Tinnell and her husband, Clayton, of Blacksburg, Va. He is also survived by his sisters, Inett Harrington Mahanes of West Palm Beach, Fla., Bernice Hoffman of Salem Ore., and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Willard and Norford Harrington.

He graduated from McIntyre High School in 1938, but enlisted in the Monticello Guard in 1937. He was in Company K of the 116th Infantry, which was part of the 29th division. In 1942, he went into the U.S. Army, for he truly loved America, and served as a Staff Sgt. Tech with the 104th Ordinance in World War II. He served in England, France, Belgium and Germany and fought in the "D" Day Invasion and returned to the U.S. on the Queen Elizabeth in 1945. In 1999, he received the Jubilee Celebration Medal for service at Normandy.

He was a retired railroad engineer for the C&O Railroad and he had the honor of engineering the Freedom Train to Washington, D.C., in 1976. His brotherhood with his fellow workers and his passion for trains were a significant part of his life. He also loved gas engines and was a member of the Somerset Steam and Gas Association. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins.

He was a member of the Mechanicsville Baptist Church, Gordonsville, Va., and was a past Deacon there.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.

Services will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Mechanicsville Baptist Church with interment at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mechanicsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 10200 Louisa Rd., Gordonsville, VA 22942.

Timothy B. Leach

Timothy Brooks Leach went to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2004, following injuries sustained in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colo.

Tim was born July 23, 1976, in Charlottesville, Va. He was the son of Virginia and John Fogelgren of Afton, Va., and William and Clare Leach of Aspen, Colo. He was an active member of the youth group of Hebron Baptist Church. He attended Albemarle and Nelson county schools. He graduated from University of Virginia in 1998, with a degree in psychology and earned his Masters of social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2000. Tim was a professional counselor at Commonwealth Catholic Charities in Richmond, which included leading groups throughout the state. Tim and Amy (Hogue) were married on May 12, 2001, and moved to Aspen in August 2002. He was a counselor at the Aspen Counseling Center and had a private counseling practice. Tim gave of his time extensively by volunteering for community programs and sponsoring his wife in the Race for the Cure. Tim loved all sports; he played in recreational soccer and basketball leagues and loved skiing and scuba diving.

In addition to his parents and his wife Amy, he is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Brian and Betsy Leach, Ben and Yvonne Fogelgren, Sam Fogelgren; his grandparents, Margaret Leach, Clare Webb, Ella May Fogelgren, and Stanley and Margaret Kenward.

Celebrations of Tim’s life are being planned for his many friends at 2 p.m. on April 17 in Aspen. Tim will be remembered for his generosity, his love, and his support by all who knew him.

Memorial gifts to support youth missions may be sent to Tim’s church in Afton, Hebron Baptist Church, 66 Tanbark Lane, Afton, VA 22920.

Broadus W. Lohr Sr.

Broadus Walter "Buck" Lohr Sr., 88, of Aroda, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Aroda.

Born July 13, 1015, he was the son of the late Walter and Sarah Durham Lohr. Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Berta Seal, Hassie L. Kilby, and Lucille Durham; two brothers, Taylor Lohr and Wilma Lohr. He was retired from the American Silk Mill and Woodberry Forrest School and was a life time deacon of Good Hope Baptist Church.

Mr. Lohr is survived by two sons, Donald Ray Lohr of Palmyra and B.W. Lohr Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Aroda; a daughter-in-law, Doris Lohr of Aroda; four grandchildren, Connie L. Ryder and her husband, Chris, Brent Lohr and his wife, Heidi, Lynn L. Cox and her husband, Richard, and Chad Lohr; five great-grandchildren, Dakota Cox, Kaelan Lohr, Aynsley Lohr, Becca Ryder, and Michael Ryder.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, from Good Hope Baptist Church in Radiant with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. L.C. Vimpeny will officiate. Family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home in Orange.

Carley B. Mooney

Mrs. Carley Berry Mooney, 67, of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Charlottesville, Va., to the late Melvin and Virginia Wood Berry. Mrs. Mooney was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Mooney.

Surviving is a daughter, Dorra Leigh Mooney and her fiance, William Coleman, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a sister, Emily Pollard of Charlottesville.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Riverview cemetery in Charlottesville.

Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Opal S. Murray

Opal Strickland Murray, 83, of Walters Road, Orange, Va., died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at the Orange County Nursing Home.

Born October 14, 1920, in Barboursville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jesse Strickland and Carrie Belle Miller Strickland. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Kenneth C. Murray.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan Murray Wallace and her husband, William of Hingman, Mass.; a son, Kenneth Murray II and his wife, Sandy, of Orange, Va.; a grandchild, Kathryn C. Murray of Seattle, Wash.; and a brother, John Strickland and his wife, Gladys, of Orange, Va.

She was a member of Orange Presbyterian Church, an Army Nurse during World War II, and retired from the Orange County School System.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday March 27, 2004, at Orange Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Nickels officiating. Interment icon will be private at later date. Special thanks to the staff at the Orange County Nursing Home and Dr. Samuel Pasternack for their exceptional care.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 7 p.m. today at the Preddy Funeral Home, Orange.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orange County Nursing Home, 120 Dogwood Lane, Orange, VA 22960.

Mary Jane Owen

A funeral service for Mary Jane Pace Owen will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hill & Wood Funeral Home, with pastor Sandy Kelso officiating. Interment icon will follow at the Oakwood cemetery, Charlottesville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Harry A. Powell II

Harry Andrew Powell II, 25, died March 22, 2004.

Born April 28, 1978, in Charlottesville, he was the son of H. Andy Powell and Kathy Morris Powell Caine.

Harry was a welder at Quality Welders and enjoyed racing dirt bikes and motorcycles.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Tyler Andrew Powell and his mother, Kandy Powell Hunt, both of Greene County; a daughter, Ava Marie Powell of Scotland, Conn.; his stepmother, Kimberly Powell; and a stepsister, Emmalee Clements, both of Charlottesville; his paternal grandmother, Rosa Leigh Powell of Longmont, Colo.; his maternal grandmother, Eileen Morris of Greene County; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Hill & Wood Chapel, with the Rev. Edward Hopkins officiating. Interment icon will be private.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions in his name to a charity of your choice.

Timothy D. Rollins

Timothy Douglas Rollins departed this life Friday, March 19, 2004.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted friend, Felicia Cooper Rollins; two sons, Timothy Jr., and Teron Rollins of Cismont, Va.; loving parents, William and Inez Rollins of Trevillians; two brothers, Jerry Rollins of Fluvanna and Kevin Rollins of Louisa; two sisters, Tammy and her husband, Nathan, of Stanardsville and Katrina Rollins of Louisa; grandmother, Evangelist Pearl Lomax of Baltimore, Md.; four aunts, devoted aunt, Louise Burruss, Sarah Burgess, Alice Scott and Carrie Rollins; one great uncle, Nathaniel Payne; three uncles, Tommy Rollins, Henry Rollins and Tony Lomax; two nieces; one devoted cousin, Denise Johnson; one nephew, one great-nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Evergreen Bibleway Church, Louisa, with interment to follow at the Rollins Family cemetery.

A homegoing celebration for Edith P. Scott will be held at noon Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Hertford County Undertakers Union, Winston, NC 27986. Interment icon will be at the Scott Family cemetery in Murfreesboro, N.C.
