Claude Meadows Jr.

CHATHAM - Claude Swanson Meadows Jr., 72, 3292 Payneton Road, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 10, 1924, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Claude Swanson Meadows Sr., and Mary Ernes Meadows Hodnett.

He was married to Nancy Motley Meadows, who survives.

He was a member of Sheva Church of Christ, and he served in the military during World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Claude Coleman Meadows and David Thomas Meadows, both of Chatham; four sisters, Elnor M. Betterton and Rebecca M. Montgomery, both of Chatham, Janie M. Shelton of Gretna and Nellie M. Marks of Richmond; a brother, Paul J. Meadows of Santee Cooper, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Alton Meadows.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday at Sheva Church of Christ by the Rev. Larry L. Owen and the Rev. Jeff Hogan. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Pittsylvania County.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Dollie Setliff

Dollie Ingram Setliff, 92, died Monday, Nov. 10, at Centerclair Nursing Home in Lexington, N.C.

She was born to Omer and Amanda Snead Ingram on April 28, 1905, in Henry County, Virginia, the fifth of nine children.

She was married to David Lewis Setliff on April 5, 1924. She retired from Dan River Mills, and she co-owned and operated Setliff's Grocery with her husband and after his death until her health no longer permitted her to do so.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one child, one granddaughter and several siblings.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne Setliff of Winston Salem, N.C., and Hugh "Buddy" Setliff of Danville; four granddaughters, Pixie Skeen of Lexington, N.C., Madeline Setliff of Lexington, N.C., Vern A'Dare Shoaf of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Thanna Setliff of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Milliard Ingram of Axton and Leonard Ingram of Henry; one sister, Ella Shively of Ringgold; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 4 p.m., from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Interment icon will follow at Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday night from 7-8:30.

Flossie Thornton

Flossie Ludella Thornton, 65, 186 Delta Road, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Stratford Health Center.

Born May 2, 1932, in Danville, she was the daughter of Victoria Thornton.

She was a homemaker, and she was a member of Jones Chapel Baptist Church and the Missionary of the church.

Survivors include two aunts, Beatrice Green and Dorothy Thornton, both of Danville; and two uncles, John Thornton of Philadelphia and Irvin Thornton of Columbus, Ohio.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Jones Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Hayes McConnell. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

A viewing for family and friends will be from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family is at the residence.

James VanOot

M. James VanOot, 84, 173 Grove Park Circle, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at his residence.

Born Aug. 6, 1913, in Oswego, N.Y., he was the son of George VanOot and Emma Kirschner VanOot.

On Aug. 16, 1939, he was married to Marjorie Duffy VanOot, who survives.

He attended the public schools of Oswego, N.Y., and was a graduate of State University of New York at Oswego and earned a master's degree in vocational education from Cornell University.

He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following the war, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 20 years and retired with the rank of lieutenant commander.

He had been a resident of Danville since 1936 and was a teacher at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, George Washington High School, Danville Technical Institute and the branch of Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Danville. In 1975, he retired from Danville Community College as chairman of the Engineering and Technology Division.

He was a member of West Main Baptist Church. He was a former member of Danville Kiwanis Club and Danville Horticultural Club, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was conferred an Honorary Associate Degree in Humane Letters by B. Carlyle Ramsey, president of Danville Community College.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Linda VanOot of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Beverly V. Williams of Atlanta; a sister, Dorothea V. Driscoll of Fair Haven, N.Y.; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Wilson. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Holly Lester

Holly Lynn Lester, 17, 149 Samuel Road, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center following an automobile accident.

Born June 7, 1980, in Danville, she was the daughter of Carson F. Lester and Myra McGuire Lester.

She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church. She was also actively involved with the youth group of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Holly was a rising senior at Chatham High School, where she was a member of the track team, Future Farmers of America and a cheerleader.

She worked at Golden Skillet restaurant on Piney Forest Road.

In addition to her mother of the residence and her father of Danville, survivors include a paternal grandmother, Ruth Barker Lester of Danville; three brothers, Frankie Lester, Brian Lester and Barron Lester, all of Danville; and two uncles, W. David Lester and Howard B. Lester III of Danville.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, H.B. Lester Jr.; a maternal grandfather, Buford T. McGuire; and a maternal grandmother, Ruby Moxley McGuire.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. W. Clay Knick, the Rev. Thomas Deal and the Rev. Mike Hearp.

Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence and at Carson Lester's residence, 881 Lester Lane, Danville.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541, the Mt. Hermon Volunteer Fire Department, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, Va. 24540; the Dry Fork Volunteer Fire Department, 328 Pleasant Gap Drive, Dry Fork, Va. 24549, or the Blairs Fire & Rescue Inc., Blairs, Va. 24527.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Judith Louhoff

Judith Harwell Louhoff, 54, 130 Wattington Court, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She had been in declining health since 1994.

Born Oct. 30, 1942, in Danville, she was a daughter of James M. Harwell and Mammie Thacker Harwell, who survives.

On Aug. 2, 1960, she was married to Arthur Louhoff, who survives.

She spent her entire life in Danville, where she worked in the sewing department at Dan River Inc. prior to an early retirement.

She was a member of the Tabernacle.

In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Danville, survivors include two sons, Arthur Jones Louhoff III of Danville and Rodney Louhoff of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Tracy Louhoff Buffington of Danville; a sister, Linda Harwell Singleton of Gainesville, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Michael Campbell. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Ruth Richardson Burnett

KEELING - Mary Ruth Richardson Burnett, 81, 3229 Keeling Drive, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a three-day stay in the hospital.

Born Dec. 1, 1915, in Keeling, she was a daughter of George Thomas Richardson and Ella Williams Richardson.

Mrs. Burnett lived her life in the Keeling community, where she was a charter member of the Keeling Extension Homemakers Club and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Robertson-Bennett Chapter.

Mrs. Burnett worked for Ennis Business Forms in Chatham prior to her retirement, and for more than 25 years she was a pianist for Kentuck Presbyterian Church.

On Jan. 18, 1941, she was married to Benjamin Franklin Burnett, who died Mar. 22, 1976.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann B. Merricks of Keeling and Jean B. Shields of Dry Fork; a brother, John J. Richardson of Keeling; a sister, Maria R. Adams of Keeling; three granddaughters, Teri S. Cook of Danville, Sheri M. Shields of Dry Fork and Amy M. Merricks of Keeling; a grandson, Steven E. Merricks of Keeling; and a great-granddaughter, Kaylee L. Cook of Danville.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, William Thomas Richardson and J. Gilmore Richardson.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Neil O. McCarter and the Rev. Dr. James P. Sample. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Ronald and Ann Merricks, 2640 Keeling Drive, Keeling.

Chester King

CHATHAM - Chester King, 48, of 3165 Irish Road, died Monday evening, July 28, 1997, in Stratford Health Center in Danville.

Born May 29, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Tommie Joe King and Elma Price King, who survives.

He was married to Elizabeth King, who survives.

Prior to his retirement due to disability, he was employed by Ennis Business Forms in Chatham.

He was a member of Callands Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother of Chatham and his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Christopher C. King of Martinsville and Richard T. King of the residence; a daughter, Kendra K. Townes of Danville; five brothers, Tommie Joe King Jr. of Ringgold, Kermit King and Alvin King, both of Callands, and Clint King and Willie King, both of Chatham; two sisters, Dorothy "Luck" Myers of Chatham and Mary Florence Royal of Alexandria; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Scales Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Murphy

Helen Johnson Murphy, 78, 201 Rocklawn Ave., died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at her residence following a year of declining health.

Born April 8, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Silas S. Johnson and Blanche Johnson.

She was married to Carol E. Murphy, who survives.

She spent most of her life in Danville, and was a member of Zion Methodist Church.

She co-owned Murphy Furniture Company with her husband for 29 years.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Phyllis M. Marston of South Boston; four sisters, Mary Shelhorse, Janie Farmer and Susie Talbott, all of Gretna, and Flossie Meadows of Danville; two brothers, Raymond Johnson and Richard Johnson, both of Gretna; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David Murphy and the Rev. Fletcher Hardy.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
