Lyndell Lavinder

Lyndell Gardner Lavinder, 87, of Riverside Health Care Center, 244 Riverside Drive, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997, at the center.

Born Aug. 22, 1909, in Danville, she was the daughter of William E. Gardner and Dora Lee Lydia Daniel.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was the widow of Jack Lavinder.

Survivors include a niece, Judy W. Bragg, and other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lydia G. Wright; and three brothers, W.E. Gardner, Clay T. Gardner and Irvin V. Gardner.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Joe Northen and the Rev. David Gray.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Loraine Moore

CASCADE - Loraine Wilson Moore, 71, of 3636 Oak Hill Road, Danville, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997, at the home of her daughter, Sarah Jarrell.

She was born in Pittsylvania County. She was a retired spooler operator at Fieldcrest Mills for 24 years. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Ricky D. Moore of Killeen, Texas; three daughters, June Street of Statesville, N.C., Judy M. Marlowe of Chatham and Sarah Jarrell of Cascade; three brothers, Albert Wilson of Bassett, Edward N. Wilson of Eden, N.C., and Joseph Wilson of Ruffin, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 tonight at Fair Funeral Home in Eden. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Sarah Jarrell, 1865 Huntington Trail, Cascade.

Amanda Rigney

Baby Amanda Rigney, 833 Cavalry Road, Chatham, died at birth in Danville Regional Medical Center on Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997.

She was the daughter of Melvin Lee Rigney and Mary Katherine Brown Rigney.

In addition to her parents, survivors include maternal grandmother Ella Mae Jefferson Brown of Chatham; and paternal grandparents Jackie Roger Rigney of Ridgeway and Francis Moss Rigney of Callands.

A funeral will be conducted 10 a.m. today at the Jefferson family cemetery by Minister J.D. Hunt III. The family will be at the residence.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Robinson

Ernest Stuart Robinson, 71, 159 Dalton St., died Thursday evening, Aug. 7, 1997, upon arrival at Danville Regional Medical Center after a two-year decline in health.

Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Chase City, he was a son of Monroe Jackson Robinson and Bessie York Robinson.

He was married to Louise Austin Robinson, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during World War II. He had spent most of his life in Danville, where he owned and operated Sherwood Village Barber Shop before retiring. He attended Riveroak Church of God.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Linda R. Snead of South Boston and Nancy R. Payne of Danville; one brother, Dillard Robinson of Martinsville; one sister, Thelma Moran of Danville; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rick Dill and the Rev. Phillip Robinson. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens where military honors will be be performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will be at the residence.

Odell Wall

Odell Gray Wall, 83, of Patton Adult Care Home, Reidsville, N.C., died Aug. 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, where she had been for the last three weeks. She had been in declining health for the past two months.

Born April 4, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Gray and Lillian Irvin Gray.

She had lived most of her life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County before moving to the Patton Adult Care Home. She was a homemaker and a member of Glen Hill Baptist Church.

She was married to J.R. Wall, who died on Jan. 3, 1979.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Rodney Barker.

The family will be at the residence of her nephew, Dudley K. Tate, Brumfield Road, Keeling, Route 714 off Route 360.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Barbour

Barbara Owen Barbour, 61, 628 Iris Lane, died Saturday morning, Aug. 9, 1997 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a four-year decline in health.

The daughter of Harry Washington Owen and Edna Jones Owen, she was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Danville.

She was married to Wayne Barbour, who survives.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

She was predeceased by a son, William "Bill" Dooley; and a daughter, Brenda Dooley.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by two sons, J.R. Dooley of Marietta, Ga. and John Dooley of Raleigh, N.C.; two step-daughters, Lisa Ann Ferguson and Tammy Michelle Powell, both of Danville; two brothers, Freddie Owen of Danville and Lee Owen of Newport News; two sisters, Shirley Cook of Danville and Peggy Walker of Ringgold; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today at the residence of her sister, Shirley Cook, 465 Martin Road, by the Rev. Bob Davis and the Rev. Dr. Samuel L. Greeson.

The family will receive friends at Shirley Cook's residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Barbour

OAK LEVEL - Mabel Strange Barbour, 97, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at the Woodview nursing home.

She was married to Charlie "Chuck" William Barbour, who predeceased her.

She is survived by three daughters, Mildred Wilmouth of Boyton, Francis Dunaway of Norfolk, and Jean B. Younger Reynolds of Lynchburg; one sister, Cora McKinnon of California; one brother, Hutchie Strange of Richmond; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the Powell Funeral Home in South Boston. Burial will follow at Oak Level Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William "Willie" Rigney

William "Willie" Rigney, 75, 4125 Still Meadow Road, Axton, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997 at Stratford Health Center where he had resided since May.

The son of William R. Rigney and Josephine Rigney Rigney, he was born in Callands on May 10, 1922.

He spent most of his life in the Callands community where he was a farmer and a logger before retiring in 1993.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include a son, John William Rigney of Axton; and a brother, Percy Isia Rigney of Chatham.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeffrey Lee Cannon. Interment icon will follow at the Rigney Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Mary Paul, 4008 Brookside Road, Axton.

Virginia Scruggs

Virginia Irby Scruggs, 74, 117 Schoolfield Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997 at her residence.

The daughter of Charles Bruce Irby and Jenny Foat Huffman Irby, she was born Aug. 17, 1922, in Gretna.

She was married to Raleigh Edward Scruggs, who predeceased her.

She spent much of her life in Gretna and made her home in Danville for more than 20 years.

She was employed by Dan River Inc. for 36 years before retiring.

She was of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by a sister, Thelma Irby Shelton of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. L. Kermit Law. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence and at the residence of her nephew, Mike Shelton, 113 Schoolfield Drive.

Linda Flaherty

Linda Wieringo Flaherty, 54, of Danville, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 3, 1943, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of William Howard Wieringo and Georgia Frances Witt Wieringo.

She was married to Nicholas A. Flaherty, who survives.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Ardieth B. Green and Ginger B. Meeks, both of Pelham, N.C., and Charlotte B. Bradshaw of Danville; a brother, Willie "Sonny" Wieringo of Blairs; and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Duane Blevins.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother, Sonny, 428 Blairs Circle, Blairs.

Whitten Timberlake Chapel, Lynchburg, is in charge of arrangements.
