Ophelia (Cookie) Alma Cooke Shepherd

Of Bassett, VA

Ophelia (Cookie) Alma Cooke Shepherd, 100, of Stanleytown health Care Center, Bassett, VA, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Stanleytown Health Care Center, Bassett. She was born on June 28, 1904, in Maiden, NC, a daughter of the late Robert Brevard Cook and the late Mary Ellen Whisnant Cook. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Hill Shepherd; three sisters, Lala Cooke, Edna Cooke and Irene Wood and two brothers, Raymond Cook and Elam Cook. She graduated from Boiling Springs High School. She attended Meredith University and received her degree from Boiling Springs Junior College now Gardner Webb College with a music education degree. She became an instructor at McNell's Beauty School in Wytheville, Virginia in the early 40's and operated beauty shops at Laurel Fork and Martinsville for over forty years. A devoted Baptist her entire life, she was active in all aspects of church life. A member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville where she was a member of The Placide Mitchell Sunday School Class. At Stanleytown Health Care Center, she was active and attended numerous activities especially those of musical origin. One of her greatest pleasures was a trip to Europe in the late eighties. She lived a long and accomplished life and personified a positive outlook on life through her love for music, flowers and family. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ernie B. Shepherd and his wife, Verna R. of Bassett; her brother, Earl D. Cook of Maiden, NC; and two grandsons, Brentley (Brent) David Shepherd and Kenten (TY) Taylor Shepherd of Bassett, VA. The funeral service was held Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Bobby Rakes officiated. Graveside service was held Tuesday, at 4 p.m. at Maiden City Cemetery, Maiden, NC. The Rev. Nathan Austin officiated. The family received friends Monday, April 4, 2005 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel and other times at the home of Ernie and Verna Shepherd, 513 Fairmont Drive, Bassett, VA. Memorials may be made to the Stanleytown Health Care Center, c/o Cookie Shepherd Activity Fund, P. O. Box 538, Stanleytown, VA 24168. Vela R. Sizemore

Of Austinville

Vela R. Sizemore, 83, of Austinville, died April 1, 2005 at Waddell Nursing Home. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Billy and Peggy Sizemore, Austinville; two grandsons. Funeral service was held April 3, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Pentecostal Holiness Church. Rev. Harvey Carico and Rev. Billy Dean officiated. Interment was in the Coulson Church Cemetery.

Darel Lee Talbott

Of Daytona Beach, FL

Darel Lee Talbott, 65, of Daytona Beach, Fl, died March 29, 2005 at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Violet Lechien Talbott, Liberal, MO; daughters, Darelyn Talbott, Dunedin, FL; Dana Carper, Palm Bay FL; sister, Patsy Lacks, Richmond; brother, Ronnie Talbott, Liberal, MO; two granddaughters. Funeral service was held April 1, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Verlin Thornton officiated. Interment was in the Liberty Hill Cemetery.

Olivia Cordelia Quesinberry Utt

Of Hillsville

Olivia Cordelia Quesinberry Utt, 84, of Hillsville, died April 4, 2005 at Waddell Nursing Home. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie U. and Jerry L. Smith, Hillsville; Wanda S. and Paul Vaughan, Jr., Galax; sons and daughter-in-law, Earl Cletis and Mary E. Utt, Axton; Rex Wayne Utt, Hillsville; sisters, Sadie Horton and Opal Goad both of Hillsville; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. Funeral services will be April 6, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Vaughan - Guynn - McGrady Chapel in Hillsville. The Rev. Eugene Cassell and Dr. James H. DeBoe will officiate. Burial will follow in the Isaac Banks Cemetery.

Georgia Mae Leonard Vernon

Of Blairsville, GA; Formerly of Winston-Salem, NC

Georgia Mae Leonard Vernon, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Winston-Salem, NC, widow of Woodrow Wilson Vernon, passed away April 2, 2005 at Union General Hopital, Blairsville, GA. She was born on January 6, 1919 in Carroll County, Virginia to the late Harrison Leonard and Dovia King Leonard. She was retired from the produce business and was a member of the House of Prayer Church in Blairsville. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Anderson and Harry of Blairsville, GA; two grandchildren, Cass Vernon and Steven Anderson; five great granddaughters, Ashlyn, Hannan and Haley Vernon, Madison and Hannah Anderson; three sisters, Agnus Shelton of Pilot Mountain, NC; Dot Vernon and husband, Hurley of Cana, VA and Juanita Edwards of Cana, VA. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Ronnie Vernon; three brothers, Harley, Joe and Everett Leonard. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church with services conducted by Elder Eugene Gunter and Pastor Jerry Helton with burial in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, April 5, 2005 from 6 until 9 p.m. at Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church in Cana, VA.

W.J. ARTHUR

Walter Jackson (W.J.) Arthur, 75, of Hillsville, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Jefferson and Annie Saunders Arthur and a sister, Mozelle Murphy. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Arthur of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Roger Burnette of Galax, Kathy and Nathan McLamb of Staunton; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Pam Arthur of Raleigh, NC; brother, Tyner Arthur of Eden, NC; sister, Avis Boaz of Eden, NC; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Funeral was Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. in First United Methodist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Ramon Torrs, Esther L. Taylor, Lucile Bohon and Betty Key Ridge. Burial was in Wilkinson Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

FRED W. BEAMER

Fred Wright Beamer, 80, of Galax, died June 21, 2001, in Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Todd Beamer; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and David Williams; son and daughter-in-law, Rickey and Dorene Manning all of Galax; sister, Ola Higgins of Wytheville; four grandchildren. Funeral was June 23 at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Rev. Mark Kilbourne officiating. Burial was in Felts Memorial Cemetery.

DONALD W. BOURNE

Donald Wade Bourne, 60, of Willis, died June 21, 2001, in Ronda, NC. He is survived by sisters, Esther Bourne Bell of Ronda, NC, Iris Bourne Osborne of State Road, NC; brothers, Hobert Junior Bourne and Emmett William Bourne both of Gordonsville, Jimmy Bourne of Christiansburg. Funeral was June 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Rev. Olan Barker officiating. Burial was in St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery.

RAYMOND BROWN, SR.

Raymond Brown, Sr., (Tojoe), 72, of Galax, died June 21, 2001, in Twin County Regional Hospital. He is survived by daughters, Lena Sawyers and Verna Lee Tucker both of Galax; sons, Elder Raymond Brown, Jr. of Galax, Rev. Douglas Gwyn of Mt. Airy, NC; brother, Hasten Brown of Galax; foster sister, Ola Goins of Galax; foster brother, Preston Coletrain of Galax; 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral was June 24 at 2 p.m. in Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Reeves, the Rev. Jerry Bryson, the Rev. Douglas Gwyn and the Rev. Theodore Brandan officiating. Burial was in Oldtown Cemetery.

TED R. CAMPBELL

Ted R. Campbell, 90, of Fries, died June 18, 2001, in Blue Ridge Health & Rehab Center. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Eugene Graham of Fries, Carolyn and Bill Littreal of West Point; sister, Inez Kizer of Lebanon; step mother, Stella Campbell Jones of Galax; half sisters, Gaye Reeder, Nora Wright of North Carolina, Elizabeth Shumate of Ivanhoe, Mabel Stuart of Fries, Maggie McKenzie and Helen Higgins both of Galax; half brothers, Eulice Campbell of Ivanhoe, Dallas Campbell of Grahams Forge; half step sister, Inez Williams of Galax; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. Funeral was June 20 at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with the Rev. Tim Worgan and the Rev. Alan Graham officiating. Burial was in Monta Vista Cemetery.

ETHEL B. COLLINS

Ethel Bishop Collins, 89, of Galax, died June 24, 2001, in Beverly Health Care/Blue Ridge. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Viola and Edward Delp of Hickory, NC, Ellen and Ronald Whitaker of Lubbock, TX; son and daughter-in-law, James and Midge Morris of Galax; sisters, Dorothy Bowers, Viola Lam and Mary Cox all of Galax; brother, Roy Burnett of Galax; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral was June 25 in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Billy Burnett and Josh McDowell officiating. Burial was in the Lineberry Cemetery.

ELSIE S. ELLIOTT

Elsie Marie Spurline Elliott, 57, of Galax, died June 21, 2001, in Twin County Regional Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Bert Lee Elliott; son and daughter, Tony and Ruth Elliott of Galax; one step granddaughter. Funeral was June 23 at 2 p.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Myron Dalton. Burial was in the McKenzie Cemetery.
