Isaac "Hank" Hankins

Isaac "Hank" Hankins, 71, 6029 Kenridge Circle, died Saturday, June 14, 1997, in Elder Care Nursing Home in Rocky Mount.

Born May 5, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Robert Hankins and Bessie Minter Hankins.

He was married to Willie Davis Hankins, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Danvile area, where he was employed by Dan River, Inc. in #5 Finishing prior to his retirement in 1988. He was later employed by the Dameron Fire Equipment Co.

He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Dameron of Danville and Debra Hankins of the residence; one brother, Owen Hankins of Gretna; two sisters, Rebecca Eanes of Chesapeake and Lois Pickeral of Lynchburg; one half-brother, Dan Hankins of Whitmell; one half-sister, Anna Lou Edwards of Gretna; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. from the Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Jack Robertson and the Rev. Paul Sorrell. Burial will be in the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery near Gretna.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-8:30 tonight, and other times at the residence.

Kathleen Palmer

WANNAMASSA, N.J. - Kathleen Haley Palmer, 62, 1203 Turner Avenue, died Friday, June 13, 1997 at the Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey, following three months of declining health.

Born Feb. 4, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Saunders Haley and Rosie Norton Haley.

Survivors include two daughters, Darlene Palmer of Howell, and Arlene Brennecke of Palm Harbor, Fla.; five sisters, Frances Wynn of Wanamassa, Margaret Marie Wilford and Rosebell Eastridge both of Danville, Va. and Roxie Ann Hammock and Shirley Jean Hammock, both of Callands, Va.; one brother, Bill Haley of Danville; and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Hubert Haley.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday from Worden Hoidal Funeral Home in Oakhurst. Burial will be in Monmouth Memorial cemetery in New Jersey.

Sally Davis

Sally S. Davis, 85, of 162 Cedar Place, Apt. 3, died Friday, June 13, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1911, in Danville, she was a homemaker and was married to Clarence W. Davis, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary H. Straiter and Gladys C. Vaden, both of Danville; two step-sons, William Davis and Clarence Davis Jr., both of Danville; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at Union Street Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Griffith. Interment icon will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Hampton Ferguson Jr.

Hampton Calhoun Ferguson Jr., 77, of 7600 Old Richmond Road, died Saturday, June 14, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 21, 1920, in Danville, he was the son of Hampton C. Ferguson Sr. and Lelia Murphy Ferguson.

He spent his entire life in the Danville area, where he worked for Commodore Mobile Homes as a dispatcher for 15 years, prior to his retirement.

He was also a member of Kentuck Baptist Church. He had been a mason for more than 50 years and was a member of the Kent Masonic Lodge.

He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On Aug. 11, 1942, he was married to Doris Cassada Ferguson, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, surivors include three sons, Warren L. Ferguson of Abingdon; Charlie L. Ferguson of Richmond, and Wayne H. Ferguson of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Frances F. Collie of Fayetteville, N.C., and Lucy F. Ferguson of Augusta, Ga.; four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Kathryn Ferguson and Lucille Ferguson.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. David Henry. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Doris McCain

Doris Davis McCain, 56, of 568 Songbird Lane, died Sunday, June 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for three years.

Born Oct. 28, 1940, in Danville, she was the daughter of Joe Henry Davis and Nell May Burroughs Davis.

She spent her entire life in Danville, where she had worked for the former Camelot Hall Nursing Home as a dietician until her retirement due to health problems.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Howard Elvoyd McCain Jr., who survives.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Victoria M. Cundiff of Dry Fork; Rebecca May M. Pruitt of Keeling, and Peggy Jo M. Oakley of Semora, N.C.; one son, Victor Elvoyd McCain of Danville; one sister, June D. Griffith of Richmond; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.

Ruth Allen

CHATHAM - Ruth Dillard Allen, 95, 118 Clement St., died Sunday, June 15, 1997, in Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Martinsville.

Born Feb. 27, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Henry and Lou Jennie Dillard.

She was married to William McKinley Allen.

She was a member of Green Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served as the mother of the church and a member of the senior choir.

Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Chattin of Danville; a brother, Conred Dillard of New Rochell, N.Y.; a sister, Jennie Chambers of Baltimore; 25 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday from Green Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church by Elder Jack White. Burial will be in Hill Crest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Rebecca E. White, 223 Greenwich Circle, Danville.

Howerton Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Fannie Bernard

The funeral for Fannie Adkins Bernard, 88, 138 Rocklawn Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today from First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Joe E. Beck and the Rev. John Meadows. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

She died Sunday, June 15, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 16, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Floyd Adkins and Katie Garrett Adkins.

She was married to Nelson W. Bernard Sr., who died Jan. 1, 1979.

She spent her entire life in Danville, where she was employed by Danville Knitting Mill for 45 years.

She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was also a member of Danville Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Florence Bernard Smith of Stafford and Esther Bernard Cole of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a son, Nelson W. "Billy" Bernard Jr. of Danville; two sisters, Kathleen Clanton of Virginia Beach and Rita Rucker of Mechanicsville; a brother, Dewey Martin Adkins of Danville; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a granddaughter, Pat Jones, 106 Cedarwood Lane, Danville.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elva Dabbs

Elva Graham Dabbs, 91, formerly of 69 Fairfield Ave., died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following three years of declining health. She had been a resident of the nursing home for the past five years.

Born Feb. 27, 1906, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of Samuel Jackson Graham and Dora Mize Graham.

She was married to James E. Dabbs Sr., who died in 1969.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked in the spinning room at Dan River Inc. for many years.

She was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include two sons, James E. Dabbs Jr. of Danville and Robert E. Dabbs of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Leonard Graham of Fieldale and Holland Graham of Gastonia, N.C.; a sister, Mazie Ritch of Charlotte, N.C.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home.

Lydia Harvey

Lydia Gaver Harvey, 139 Fenton Place, died Tuesday, June 17, 1997, at her residence.

Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Danville, she was a daughter of Clayton Daniel Gaver and Ruth Clendenning Gaver.

She was a 1940 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College.

She was married to Reuben C. Harvey, who predeceased her.

She was formerly a faculty member and administrator at Stratford Hall and Stratford College, and she had served as executive director of the Womack Foundation.

From 1976 to 1979, she was executive director of the Danville YWCA, and she was an honorary life member of the board of directors of the YWCA.

In 1981, she was the recipient of the Jane Harris Memorial Award for outstanding service to the community and to humanity.

She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, where she had formerly served on the administrative board and the council on ministries.

She was a member of the Wednesday Club, Friends of the Danville Public Library and other civic organizations.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel Gaver Harvey of New York, and Edward Peyton Harvey and his wife, Michele Harvey, of Spartanburg, S.C.; and by two grandchildren, Christopher Harvey and Kathryn Harvey.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be sent to the Danville YWCA.
