James Cumbo Sr.

ALEXANDRIA - James William Cumbo Sr. died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Alexandria Hospital.

He was married to Barbara Ellen Cumbo.

He was the father of James W. Cumbo Jr., Cynthia A. Davis and Julie Marie Cumbo; the brother of Horace, Sherman and Garnett Cumbo, Ann Ewing, Pauline Groseclose and Vernie Thomas; and the grandfather of Christopher L. Clover Cumbo.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Fred Cumbo, Ernest Cumbo and Carl Cumbo; and three sisters, Myrtle Thomas, Hazel Berry and Geneva Cumbo.

Friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 21. Interment icon will be in Mt. Comfort cemetery.

Corrine Dawson

RINGGOLD - Corrine Dalton Dawson, 63, 2600 Tom Fork Road, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born Aug. 3, 1933, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Whitt T. Dalton and Maude Talbott Dalton.

She was married to Don Dennis Dawson, who survives.

She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of Ringgold, survivors include three sons, Roger Rowland of Greensboro, N.C., and Tommy Rowland and Dan Rowland, both of Hurt; three daughters, Dora Mitchell and Ann Compton, both of Hurt, and Mandy Seamster of Gladys; five brothers, Joseph Dalton of Gladys, Price Dalton of Nathalie, James Dalton and George Dalton, both of Gretna, and Bennie Dalton of Bassett; two sisters, Catherine Jones of Gretna and Louise Betterton of Java; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Nannie Kate Clay.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Piney Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Jones.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna, and other times at the residence of a son, Tommy Rowland, 936 Dews Road, Hurt.

Eugene Dunn

Eugene Edward Dunn, 66, 135 Ashwood Place, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following six months of declining health.

Born Dec. 24, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jehu W. Dunn and Eva Megginson Dunn.

He spent most of his life in Danville and was retired.

He was of the Holiness faith.

During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by a sister, Peggy Dunn Lewis of Danville.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday in Highland Burial Park, where full military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, 135 Ashwood Place.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Holland Freeze

NEWPORT NEWS - Holland B. Freeze died Saturday, April 5, 1997, in Newport News, where he had resided for 54 years.

He was married to Marguerite Freeze, who survives.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Holland Freeze Jr. of Reston, J. Thompson Freeze of Newport News and Eugene Freeze of Woodbine, Md.; four daughters, Mina Bay, Robye Scott, Marguerite Verlander and Mary Sue Henricksen, all of Newport News; a brother, Harry Y. Freeze of Danville; a sister, Lois Freeze Coleman of Danville; and 12 grandchildren.

A family graveside service was held Monday, April 7, 1997, in Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. Roy L. Miller.

Peninsula Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Durham Hardison Jr.

Durham Lloyd Hardison Jr., 75, 142 Northwest Drive, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 15, 1921, in Danville, he was a son of Durham Lloyd Hardison Sr. and Selma Iris Yeatts Hardison.

On Dec. 23, 1939, he was married to Mary Bell Pierce Hardison, who survives.

He was of the Baptist faith.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a salesman for Danville Meat Supply.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Karen H. Wheeler of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Joyce Ann H. Soyars of Eden, N.C.; three sons, Durham L. Hardison III of Ringgold, George Pierce Hardison of Danville and Malcolm Theodore Hardison of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Wilma Iris Doss of Martinsville; a brother, Gene Cordell Hardison of Floyd; and several grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Hedrick

Ray Kermit Hedrick, 61, 309 Girard St., died Friday, April 18, 1997, in his residence.

Born Sept. 23, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Jessie Hedrick and Essie Mae Walden Hedrick.

On June 6, 1977, he was married to Julia Ann Hedrick, who survives.

He had spent his entire life in Danville and was self-employed as a carpenter.

During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Ramona Burton of Danville, Rose Marie Adams of Pelham, N.C., and Pam Anthony of Milton, N.C.; two sons, Ray L. Hedrick of Danville and Ray Kermit Hedrick Jr.; two stepdaughters, Kathy Buzzard of Florida and Donna Kay Burton of North Carolina; three sisters, Virginia Harper of Staunton, Lois Ferguson of Danville and Janie Myers of Mountain Hill; three grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Hedrick.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Roy Newton.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Eugene Houghton

Eugene Davis Houghton died at the home of his daughter in Vevay, Ind., on Friday, April 18, 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Abby Houghton.

Born in Broadway in 1923, he was the son of the Rev. Stanley Baylor and Ella Blanche Weddle Houghton of Danville.

He attended Pittsylvania County Schools and graduated from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky.

He was a World War II veteran.

Other survivors include a son, John Lester Houghton of Richmond, Ky.; a daughter, Esther Houghton Crepin of Vevay, Ind.; a sister, Frances Houghton Moore of Danville; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted out of Haskell-Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay, Ind., at noon on Wednesday.

David Murray

David Wylie Murray of Washington, Pa., died Tuesday, April 15.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Mary.

He was a member of St. Hilary Church.

He was a supervisor at Brockway Glass for 46 years and a member of the Supervisors Club.

He was predeceased by a son, David Wylie Murray.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Murray of Danville and Robert J. Murray of Mount Lebanon, Pa.; two sisters, Mildred Gamber of Michigan and Geraldine Nixon of Washington; and five grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday, April 18, in St. Hilary Church. Interment icon followed in Forest Lawn Garden cemetery.

John Oakes Jr.

John Carter Oakes Jr., 84, formerly of 170 American Legion Blvd., died Friday, April 18, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Feb. 22, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Carter Oakes Sr. and Mamie Shields Oakes.

He was married to Dorothy McDowell Oakes, who died July 27, 1991.

Oakes was a charter member of North Main Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

He served in the Army in World War II and was a member of American Legion Memorial Post #325.

After 25 years of service, he retired from Dan River Inc. For the past two years, he had been a resident of Roman Eagle.

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Oakes Hawkins of Mechanicsville, and two sisters, Mary Oakes Holley of Danville and Wilmoth Oakes Murphy of Dry Fork.

He had three sisters who predeceased him, Eliza Oakes, Rosa Jones and Virginia Farthing; one brother who also predeceased him, Ryland S. Oakes; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted on Monday at 4 p.m. from North Main Baptist Church by Rev. Eddie David, Rev. Kyle A. Flora and Rev. Lewis E. Wall. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4 p.m. at North Main Baptist Church and at other times at the residence of Mary Oakes Holley at 175 American Legion Blvd.
