Ralph "Buck" Burchett

HOPEWELL - Ralph Leon "Buck" Burchett, 64, of Sherman Ave., died Thursday, May 29, 1997, in his residence.

Born in Greensboro, N.C., he was a son of Thomas F. and Dora Elizabeth Wright Burchett Sr.

He was married to Betty Hall Burchett, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a retired senior lab technician with Allied Chemical Tech Center and a member of South Hopewell Church of God.

In addition to his wife of Hopewell, survivors include two sons, Rev. R. Leon Burchett Jr. of Meherrin and Randall C. Burchett of Colonial Heights; three daughters, Linda G. Burchett of Petersburg, Carolyn B. Kestner of Prince George and Crystal B. Powell of Hopewell; two brothers, Rev. T.F. Burchett Jr. of Logan, W.Va., and F. Joe Burchett of Danville; three sisters, Gretchel B. Jones of Smithfield, Joan B. Dill of Ashland and Judy B. Jones of Danville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from South Hopewell Church of God by the Rev. Allen Roberson and the Rev. Carl J. White. Burial will be in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George County.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

Frank Duncan

Frank R. Duncan, 78, 649 Duncan Drive, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health. He had been in the hospital for four days.

Born June 23, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of James S. Duncan and Lucy Shumate Duncan.

On Dec. 23, 1938, he was married to Annie Blanche Bradner Duncan, who survives.

He spent his entire life in the Bachelors Hall community of Pittsylvania County.

He was a farmer and worked at Goodyear for 10 years until he retired at age 65.

He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Ann Duncan Jennings of Bachelors Hall and Deborah Duncan McCubbins of Axton; a son, Johnny S. Duncan of Bachelors Hall; two sisters, Kate Walker of Westover Drive and Lillian Harris of Bachelors Hall; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Kitty Duncan Yeatts.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday from Fairview United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Edmonds, the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans and the Rev. Robert Thorne. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Fairview United Methodist Church, and other times at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Merricks Sr.

Joseph G. Merricks Sr., 84, 309 Golf Club Road, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center, following three months of declining health. He had been in the hospital for eight days.

Born Nov. 21, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Dovie Merricks and Pency Simpson Merricks.

On July 13, 1940, he was married to Elvira Astin Merricks, who died May 21, 1988.

He spent his entire life in the Danville area.

At the time of his retirement in 1984, he was executive vice-president of Pittsylvania Hardware.

He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, where he was treasurer for 16 years, served on the board of deacons, taught Sunday school and served as superintendent.

During World War II, he served in the Army. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 325.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph G. Merricks Jr. and Donald W. Merricks, both of Danville, and Ronald E. Merricks of Keeling; three sisters, Leona M. Buettner of Danville, Ilean M. Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., and Rebecca M. Dickerson of Lynchburg; two brothers, Moses L. Merricks and Richard "Dick" Merricks, both of Danville; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rosie Raynor

Rosie Hardy Raynor, 82, formerly of 3260 Virginia Lane, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home, following several years of declining health.

Born Dec. 14, 1914, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Charles Hardy and Sadie Lovelace Hardy.

She was married to Clarence Preston Raynor, who died Jan. 19, 1972.

She spent most of her life in the Vernon Hill community of Halifax County. She had been a resident of the nursing home for over eight years.

She was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Extension Department.

She worked for Sales Knitting Co. in Halifax for several years as a sewing machine operator until her health began to fail.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth R. Millner of Vernon Hill; three sons, Bobby G. Raynor of Danville, Dewey T. Raynor of South Boston and Donald S. Raynor of Vernon Hill; three sisters, Hester H. Epps of South Boston, Elsie H. Walker of Martinsville and Violet H. Maxfield of Maryland; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Lena Mae Dawson; and two sons, Lewis Raynor and Charlie Paul Raynor.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Kyle Flora and the Rev. Howard Green. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a son, Bobby Raynor, 3260 Virginia Lane in Blairmont Acres, off Route 29 North.

Stanley Van Deventer

Stanley C. Van Deventer, 65, 2652 Golf Club Road, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in his residence.

Born Jan. 25, 1932, in Glendale, Calif., he was a son of Dr. Cyrus Eugene Van Deventer and Esther Elizabeth Johnson.

He was married to Carol Van Deventer, who survives.

He helped locate the Brockway Glass Plant in Danville and became its first plant manager in 1978. He was also an area plants manager for Brockway Glass until 1985. Prior to his retirement on Feb. 1, 1997, he served as plant manager for Ball-Foster in Fort Allegany, Pa.

He attended Occidental College and received his B.A. degree from San Jose State.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He also attended Ascension Lutheran Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Karen Work and Cathy Scolpini, both of Danville; two sons, Steven Van Deventer of Powhatan and Craig Van Deventer of Danville; two brothers, Robert E. Van Deventer of California and Donald W. Van Deventer of Arizona; and ten grandchildren.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Mark Van Deventer.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from Ascension Lutheran Church by the Rev. Caldwell Day. A private burial will be held.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Louise L. Claiborne

Louise Lipscomb Claiborne, 52, 1139 Goodman Road, died on Friday, May 30, 1997, in Danville.

Born Jan. 16, 1945, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church.

She was a seamstress at Health Tex.

Survivors include her mother, Dakata Lipscomb of Pelham, N.C.; two sons, Christopher Claiborne of Germantown, Md., and Lamont Claiborne of Danville; two brothers, John Lipscomb and Harry Lipscomb, both of Patterson, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Haywood T. Gray. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence.

David B. Fuqua Sr.

David Berkley Fuqua Sr., 71, 224 Courtland St., Apartment 240, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at his residence.

Born April 13, 1926, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Daniel C. Fuqua and Lessie Hamlett Fuqua.

He had lived most of his life in Caswell County and had lived in Danville for the last three years.

He was retired from Dan River Mills, where he worked as a dye operator. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was also a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was married to Mary Strader Fuqua, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Tom Fuqua and David Fuqua, both of Mebane, N.C., and Jerry Fuqua of Burlington, N.C.; three daughters, Dorothy Rodgers of Graham, N.C., Ann Goodson of Ruffin, N.C., and Jean Mays of Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson, C.M. Smith Jr. of Danville; two stepdaughters, Bettie S. Josey of Providence, N.C., and Marie Daniel of Blairs; four brothers, John Fuqua and Carl Fuqua, both of Mebane, N.C., Richard Fuqua of Blanch, N.C., and Gwynn Fuqua of Roxboro, N.C.; three sisters, Leana Rimmer of Cedar Grove, N.C., Elizabeth Horner of Mebane, N.C., and Mary Purnell of Roxboro, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today at Holiday Village Chapel by the Rev. Danny Solomon.

The family will receive friends at the home of a stepdaughter, Bettie S. Josey, 1688 Walters Mill Road, Providence, N.C.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

William L. Jones

William Luther Jones, 38, 1191 Burton Drive, died suddenly Friday afternoon, May 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center, from an apparent heart attack.

Born April 10, 1959, in Danville, he was a son of Lacy L. Jones and Katherine Collins Jones.

He had spent all of his life in the Westover Hills community. He was a graduate of Tunstall High School and had attended Danville Community College. He was also a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include one sister, Marianne L. Jones of Danville; two brothers, Robert Jones of the residence, and Lacy "Spike" Jones Jr. of Olathe, Kan.; four aunts, Aliene Collins of the residence, Mildred Collins and Peggy Hogan, both of Danville, and Ruby Smallwood of Roanoke; two nieces, Kimberly Jones and Tiffany Jones, both of Olathe, Kan., and one nephew, Shawn Jones of Olathe, Kan.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Mountain View cemetery by the Rev. T. Anthony Pollard and the Rev. Gerald Smith.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church building fund, or to your favorite charity.
