Daisy Ferrell

Daisy A. Ferrell, 86, 545 Arlington Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

A native of Danville, she was born May 26, 1910.

She was married to Carlton A. Ferrell.

She employed as a librarian for the city of Danville. She was also a member of High Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by a niece, Selma W. Graves of the residence.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday from High Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerome B. Morris Sr. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The body may be viewed 4-8 tonight at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret Foster

Margaret A. Foster, 65, 1920 South Boston Road, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, in her residence, following several months of declining health.

Born Aug. 27, 1931, in Milton, N.C., she was a daughter of Ethel Ramsey, who survives, and Sol Angle.

She was married to John Nicks Foster, who survives.

She spent most of her life in the Danville area. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Sears in the appliance department for 35 years.

In addition to her mother and her husband, both of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Margaret F. Hudgins of Great Falls; two sons, Horace Lee Foster and John Stephen Foster, both of Danville; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Darrell Campbell. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Wilfred Johnson

DRY FORK - Wilfred Johnson, 75, 406 Tobacco Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, in Stratford Health Center, following a year of declining health.

Born Sept. 20, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Johnnie Johnson and Toy Goad Johnson.

He spent his entire life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas, where he farmed for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Pittsylvania County Wildlife Club. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was the last survivor of his immediate family.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Providence Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Clay Knick.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Janie Kirby

Janie Mauney Kirby, 101, formerly of 14 Milton Avenue, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, in Riverside Health Care Center.

Born July 4, 1895, in Lincolnton, N.C., she was a daughter of William Mauney and Rhoda Mauney.

She was married to Roy H. Kirby, who died May 4, 1986.

She spent most of her life in Danville, and had resided in the nursing home since March 1988.

Prior to her retirement in 1958, she was employed by Dan River Inc.

She was a charter member of Southall Baptist Church. She was also a member of Dan River Retired Employees' Club.

Survivors include three sons, James Kirby and William Kirby, both of Danville, and Ned Kirby of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a son, William Kirby, 2408 Ridge Road, off Ripley Drive in the Mount Hermon community.

Margaret Petty

CHATHAM - Margaret Womack Petty, 59, 1420 Abbott Place, died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 19, 1937, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Frances Luck Womack, who survives, and William Womack.

She was married to James Howard Petty, who survives.

She was a member of Womack Chapel Holiness Church. She was also a member of Charlie Peerman and the Womack Singers.

In addition to her mother of Halifax and her husband of the residence, survivors include five sons, Howard J. Petty and Andre L. Petty, both of the residence, Willie L. Petty and Steve J. Petty, both of Danville, and Roy Lee Petty of Halifax; three daughters, Louise Petty, Linda D. Petty and Cynthia M. Petty, all of the residence; two brothers, William Womack and Walter Womack, both of Danville; five sisters, Martha Ragsdale and Sarah Womack, both of Halifax, Ellen Barksdale of South Boston, Bessie Womack of Danville, and Maxie Adams of Keeling; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Ebenezer Baptist Church by Elder Joseph A. Dixon. Burial will be in the Davis Family cemetery in Vernon Hill.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Howerton Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Cynthia McGlaun

FLINT, MICH. - Cynthia Craft McGlaun, 44, 724 West Copeman St., and formerly of Chatham, Va., died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, in Geneses Regional Medical Center.

Born April 25, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of E.J. Craft, who survives, and Bessie Johnson Craft.

She was employed by General Motors in Flint.

In addition to her father of Chatham, survivors include three children, Atiim McGlaun, Kalomo McGlaun and Nataki McGlaun, all of Flint; four brothers, Edward Craft of Korea, Robert Craft and E.J. Craft Jr., both of Chatham, and Charlie Craft of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Ida Harris and Eva Craft, both of Danville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from New Hope A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Earl Morris. Burial will be in the Craft Family cemetery in Chatham.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a brother, Robert Craft, Route 612, Chatham.

Howerton Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Haas

Clarence Huston Haas, 70, of 396 Medical Center Road, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 6, 1926, in Madison, Kan., he was the son of Orville H. Haas and Georgia Crawford Haas.

He moved to this area in 1972. He was employed by Collie Equipment Co. until he retired in 1987. He was a high school graduate and attended Emporia State College for three years. He was a member of the Nor-Dan Church of Christ and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Haas of Danville; three sons, Eric Haas and Carl Haas, both of Danville, and Donald Haas of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, Russell Haas of Wichita; three sisters, Frances H. Jacobs of Peabody, Kan., and Lela H. McDonough and Arlene H. O'Connor, both of Wichita; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, by the Rev. John Hill.

The family will be at the residence of his granddaughter, Kristy Shelton, 312 Stanley Drive.

Winnie Peeler

Winnie P. Peeler, 102, died Saturday morning, March 1, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had lived for five years.

Born Oct. 21, 1894, in Moneta, she was the daughter of John P. Lynch and Mary Whitworth Lynch.

She spent most of her life in Danville, where she worked at Dan River Mills.

She was a charter member of Sledd Memorial United Methodist Church, which is now known as St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and where she was honored with a plaque for her years of faithful dedication. She served as treasurer of the Ladies' Bible Class for many years.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Major Clifford N. Peeler and John C. Peeler.

Survivors include a daughter, Victoria P. Townsend of Danville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was the last member of her generation.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Ronald W. Mateer. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the daughter's residence, 123 North Avenue.

Marvin Pickral

GRETNA - Marvin Calvin Pickral, 70, of 1081 East Gretna Road, died Friday, Feb. 28, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born June 16, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the Calvin O. Pickral and Alice Cocke Pickral.

He was a member and served on the deacon board of the Greenfield Baptist Church. He also was assistant director of Sunday school, a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the church choir.

He was retired from Mecklenburg Electric Coop.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Mayhew Pickral of the residence; one son, Ronnie Pickral of Gretna; one brother, Warren Pickral of Danville; and one grandson.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Greenfield Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
