Posey Adkins Sr.

RINGGOLD - Posey Lee Adkins Sr., 92, 5225 Kentuck Road, Lot No. 31, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center.

Born June 5, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Robert Samuel Adkins and Nora Jube Adkins Adkins.

He was married to Louise Lyles Adkins, who survives.

He spent his entire life in the Danville area and was of the Baptist faith. He also served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Geraline Swagger and Phillis Adkins, both of Charlotte, N.C.; three sons, Herbert Adkins and Maxwell Adkins, both of Charlotte, and Posey Adkins Jr.of Ringgold; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted noon today in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, Posey Adkins Jr., 1125 Fall Creek Road, Ringgold.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. S.E. "Johnny" Burr

AXTON - The Rev. S.E. "Johnny" Burr, 3960 Martin Drive, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County, following five years of declining health.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., he was a son of Rex C. Burr and Lillian Taft Burr.

In 1957, he was married to Maggie Shorter Burr, who survives.

He grew up in Charlotte, but spent most of his life in Newport News and Danville, where he was the former pastor of Bethelham Baptist Church for 81/2 years. He worked as a pastor for 27 years, serving churches on the Eastern Shore, and in Goode and Cleveland.

He also owned and operated the Downtown Barbershop before retiring in 1994.

He was a member of Bethelham Baptist Church and past president of the Barber's Association in Newport News and the union.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Debra A. Johnson of Austin, Texas, and Vickie L. Perkins of Hanover, Ind.; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilbert Hawks. Burial will be in Schoolfield cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Ray Edwards

GRETNA - Ray Bennett Edwards, 63, 11020 East Gretna Road, died Friday, March 7, 1997.

Born March 14, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Cora Hines Edwards, who survives, and Willie Bennett Edwards.

He was married to Nancy Tucker Edwards, who survives.

He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. He was a retired farmer and tobacco warehouseman.

In addition to his mother of Gretna and his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Allison Edwards Betterton of Keeling and Holly Rae Edwards of Gretna; three brothers, Alvin Edwards and George Edwards, bothof Blandensburg, Md., and Ralph Edwards of Gretna; and two foster brothers, Bobby Shelton of Hurt and Billy Shelton of Charleston, S.C.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from St. Andrews United Methodist Church by the Rev. Roger Wilborn. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home of Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Fitts

Mabel Parsons Moorefield Fitts, 76, 1535 Myrtle Ave., died unexpectedly Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 25, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of James H. Parsons and Frances Emerson Parsons. Her stepfather was Charlie L. Jones.

She was first married to Carl W. Moorefield, who predeceased her. She was later married to James D. Fitts, who is also deceased.

Her entire life had been spent in the Danville area, where she first worked in Dan River Mills. She later received her training as a LPN from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She also worked as a nurse for Dr. Greenburg until retiring in 1982.

She was an active member of the Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church, where she was a member of the Chapel Bible Class, Missionary Circle No. 9, and was a past member of the adult choir. She was also an active member of the retired club of the hospital.

Survivors include a son, Garland L. Moorefield of Durham, N.C.; a brother, James H. Parsons Jr. of Columbus, Ga.; two grandsons, Brian L. Moorefield and Kevin R. Moorefield, both of Durham; and a granddaughter, Sharon A. Moorefield of Durham.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Fred Vicks and the Rev. R. Eugene Talley. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Frances Hamlett

Frances Patterson Hamlett, 76, 725 Holland Road, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following several years of declining health.

Born March 1, 1921, in Stella, she was a daughter of Charlie Patterson and Nannie Curry Patterson.

She was married to Raymond Clay "Buck" Hamlett, who survives.

She had lived on Holland Road for the past 50 years. Before her health began to fail, she was employed in the spinning room at Dan River Mills for many years.

She was also a member of State Line Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sisters, Pincy Darby of Ridgeway, Lorene Lemons of Martinsville, and Mary Lou Rossomando of Hamlen, Conn.; and two brothers, Harry Patterson of Martinsville and Harvey Patterson of Collinsville.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from State Line Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Billy Hamlett. Burial will be in the Hamlett Family cemetery on Holland Road.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Charlotte "Anne" Lundy WITH PHOTO

Charlotte "Anne" P. Lundy, 59, 2141 River Ridge Road, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center, following 3 1/2 years of declining health.

Born Sept. 14, 1937, in Danville, she was a daughter of Lee Harvey Payne and Margaret Henry Payne.

On March 16, 1956, she was married to John Henry Lundy, who survives.

She spent most of her life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. She worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. until 1984. She recently worked as a secretary for her family business, Lundy Insurance Agency.

She was also a member of Gatewood Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Alan L. Lundy and Tony L. Lundy, both of Danville; a daughter, Margaret Ruis-Thompson of Dry Fork; her stepmother, Ada Payne Smith of Gibsonville, N.C.; two brothers, Bill Payne of Greensboro, N.C., and Col. Kenneth Payne of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a sister, June Fately of San Diego; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Teressa Lundy, and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Lee Payne.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John C. Gentry and the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, off Pinelake Road.

Mabel Oliver

Mabel Garrett Oliver, 87, formerly of 222 Courtland St., Apt. 312, Holiday Village, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in Chesterfield County, where she had resided for the past year.

Born Nov. 4, 1909, in Person County, N.C., she was a daughter of Walter Garrett and Josephine Garrett Carmichael.

She was married to Robert W. "Pete" Oliver, who predeceased her.

In her early years, she was employed by Blue Buckle. Prior to her retirement in June 1972, she was employed by Dan River Mills in the No. 5 sewing room.

She was the oldest member of Emanuel Weslyn Church.

She was also a member of Dan River Retired Employees Club, the Sewing Club of Dan River, and Danville Senior Citizens Club. She was also former secretary of Holiday Village Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor O. Traina of Richmond and Carol O. Heffner of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Cornellia Joan Oliver.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Richard Heffner. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, 165 Brookview Road, Danville.

Gay Peters

Thelma Gay Duncan Peters, 458 Southland Drive, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in her residence, following a year of declining health.

Born in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joel Harvey Duncan and Salley McDowell Duncan.

On Oct. 28, 1963, she was married to Julian W. Peters, who died in 1986.

Prior to moving to Danville several years ago, she spent most of her life in Richmond. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by AT&T as a supervisor. She was also of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Chatham Burial Park by the Rev. T. Anthony Pollard.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Robertson

BLAIRS - Shirley Roop Robertson, 59, 2492 Snakepath Road, died Friday, March 7, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 15, 1937, in Fayette County, W.Va., she was a daughter of James Earl Roop and Catherine Prather Roop, who survives.

She was married to Archie Lenford Robertson Sr., who predeceased her.

In addition to her mother of South Boston, survivors include two daughters, Vicky L. Oakes and Teresa Ann Robertson, both of Ringgold; two sons, Archie L. Robertson Jr. and Ralph Edward Fannin, both of Keeling; two sisters, Sue Cole of South Boston and Linda Holcomb of Virgilina; a brother, James E. Roop Jr. of Woodlands, Texas; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Vicky L. Oakes, 325 Homestead Trail, Ringgold.

Scott Funeral Home of Chatham is in charge of arrangements.
