John Chaff

John B. Chaff, 73, 2314 Franklin Turnpike, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County, following two years of declining health.

Born Sept. 10, 1923, in Ward, W.Va., he was a son of Frank Chaff and Tresa Horvath Chaff.

He was married to Betty Ann Silvasy Chaff, who survives.

He had lived in Randolph, Ohio, before moving to Danville in June 1992.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio, as a machinist for 22 years. He was a member of the Goodyear Engineering & Fisherman's Club.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Diana C. Richardson of Danville; a son, John D. Chaff of Cleveland; five brothers; five sisters; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Fred Cox. Military honors will be given by American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 609 Pocahontas Road, in Tuscarora Farms off Route 41.

Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Doolin

Harry Lester Doolin, 75, 18 Oakland Ave., died Friday, April 4, 1997, in his residence.

Born Jan. 28, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Joseph Yancey Doolin and Christina Reaves Doolin.

On July 30, 1950, he was married to Laura Sue Mayhew Doolin, who survives.

He spent most of his life in Danville and worked for Motor Parts & Equipment for 30 years.

He attended Danville Community College for two years, graduating as a machinist.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Guthrie of Yanceyville, N.C., and Mildred Barbour of St. Petersburg, Fla.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Kendall Jenkins and the Rev. Clifford Sloane.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Dorothy Dishman, 610 Southhampton St.

Robert Phelps

Robert Junior Phelps, 29, 133 Cumberland Drive, died Sunday, March 30, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 10, 1967, in Danville, he was a son of Juanita Smith, who survives, and Charles Miller.

He was married to Shannon Gray Phelps, who survives.

He was employed by Masonite for many years.

In addition to his wife of the residence, and his mother, survivors include a daughter, Shantavia Phelps of the residence; four brothers, Linwood Miller and Roderick Miller, both of Greensboro, N.C., Charles Miller of Albany, N.Y., and Gary Miller of Atlanta; three sisters, Darlise M. Carter of Danville, Dr. Faynese Biral of New York, and Ilene Barksdale of Washington, D.C.

The funeral will be conducted at noon today from Mt. Sinai Glorious Church of God. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cora Burke

NEWARK, N.J. - Cora Lee Pounds Burke, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, in Newark, N.J. Born Feb. 5, 1944, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Harry Pounds Sr. and Florence Cunningham Pounds, who predeceased her.

She lived most of her adult life in Newark. She was married to Albert "Jimmy" Burke, who predeceased her.

She is survived by two daughters, Dianne Burke and Deborah Burke, both of New Jersey; two sons, Michael Burke of New Jersey and Ronald Burke of Macon, Ga.; five brothers, Arthur J. Pounds of Danville, Va., Clarence L. Pounds of Kentucky, Raymond Pounds of Washington, D.C., Robert Pounds of New Jersey and Harry Pounds Jr. of Sutherlin, Va.; seven sisters, Luberta P. Richardson of East Orange, Lillian P. Lassiter of Irvington, Frances P. Garland of Ringgold, Va., and Vernell P. Diggs, Shirley P. Logan, Catherine P. Greene and Edith P. Carter, all of Danville.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday Mount Zion Baptist Church by Rev. Howard L. Graves Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Samuel and Frances Garland, 324 Gunn Garland Road, Ringgold.

Dennis Clay

NATHALIE - Dennis Thomas Clay, 75, of 2001 Mulberry Road, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born September 25, 1921, in Halifax County, he was a son of the late Joe Thomas Clay and Mattie Eanes Clay.

Mr. Clay was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church and a retired farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Addie Mae Jones Clay, of the residence. Other survivors include two sons, Jerry Clay of Danville and Danny Clay of Altavista; one daughter, Joyce Moser of Gretna; one brother, Grover Clay of Danville; three sisters, Louise Montgomery of Nathalie, Beuna Anderson of Rocky Mount and Gaynell Guinn of Danville; five grandchildren, Tammy Moorefield, Tony Moorefield, Jennifer C. Snead, Joseph Clay and Shari Searcy.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Mulberry Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Jordan. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Doolin

Mae Humphries

Mae Snead Humphries, 84, of 229 River Oak Drive, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at her residence.

Born August 29, 1912, in Lunenburg County, she was the daughter of Frederick L. Snead and Belle Cox Snead, who predeceased her. She had been a resident of Danville since 1967.

She was married to James C. "Pat" Humphries Jr., who died Nov. 12, 1985.

She is survived by two daughters, Edith Humphries of Danville and Susan Kerr of Pennsville, N.J.

The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Townes Funeral Home. The Rev. Joey Yeatts will officiate. Interment icon will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Westhampton Memorial Park in Richmond.

The family will receive friends Monday after the funeral at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Z.T. "Tim" Motley

Zenas Timothy "Tim" Motley, 88, of 238 Crosland Ave., died Saturday, April 5, 1997, in the Stratford Health Care Center. He had been in declining health for the last four weeks and in the hospital the last three.

He was born on Oct. 7, 1908, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of Jordan T. Motley and Susan Kate Collins Motley, who predeceased him.

Mr. Motley had lived all of his life in the Blairs community and Danville. He was a retired farmer and merchant. He was operator of Z.T. Motley & Sons General Store on Rt. 360 for a number of years.

Mr. Motley was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church for 71 years.

On July 14, 1928, he was married to Virginia Henderson Motley.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Carroll H. Motley of Lynchburg and Philip D. Motley of Danville; one daughter, Virginia M. Blair of Danville; eight grandchildren, Vickie Motley BeCraft and Cheryl Motley Wilder of Lynchburg, and Vivian Motley Wood, Donald T. Motley, Jr., Teresa Leigh Blair, Robert Neill Blair, Keith A. Motley and Gwen N. Motley, all of Danville; son-in-law, Bobby L. Blair; and three daughters-in-law, Irene N. Motley, Nancy F. Motley and Margaret H. Motley; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by six brothers, Adrian Motley Sr., Surgeon T. Motley, Eugustine J. Motley, Willard Motley, Leslie Motley and Jack Motley, and one sister, Susan Motley.

Graveside services will be held Monday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at Highland Burial Park by Rev. Lewis P. Harris.

The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7-8:30 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Street chapel, and at other times at the residence.
