Helen Kendrick

DETROIT, Mich. - Helen Green Kendrick, 88, of 17160 Gravier Street, died June 21, 2002, at St. John Macomb Hospital in Detroit. She had been in declining health for the past two years.

Born July 4, 1913 in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of the late John Joseph Green and the late Mae Henrie Smith Green.

She was married to Clinton Kendrick, who died in 1955. Mrs. Kendrick had lived in Danville prior to moving to Detroit where she had lived most of her life as a homemaker. She was of the Christian Faith.

Survivors include two nieces, Susie G. Kendrick and Mary K. Powell and her husband Morris, all of Dry Fork, Va.; and one nephew, Percy C. Kendrick and his wife Carol, of Augusta, Ga.

She was predeceased by her husband and one sister, Sarah Green Kendrick.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Butch Dillinger and the Rev. Jack Oakes.

The family will receive friends 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday night at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitmell Christian Church Building Fund, 2064 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork, Virginia 24540.

Nettie Ozmar

DANVILLE, Va. - Nettie Emerson Ozmar, 75, of 222 Courtland St., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 27, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Arthur Leonard Emerson and Nannie Abbott Emerson.

She was married to Earl V. Ozmar, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda O. McIntyre of Richmond and Cheryl O. Sawyer of St. Louis, Mo.; one son, Ronald E. Ozmar of Danville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Chatham Burial Park with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home.

Leonard Setliff

DANVILLE, Va. - Leonard James Setliff, 84, of 201 Setliff Street, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three years.

Born July 20, 1917 in Danville, he was a son of Willie Joe Setliff and Mary Hutson Setliff.

He was married to Mable Pruitt Setliff, who predeceased him. He was a member of Ferry Road Friends Church and former member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. He was also a 32 degree Mason and member of Ramah Masonic Lodge. He was the owner and operator of Country Club Diner for many years.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Setliff Fowler of Blairs; one son, James "Jimmy" Setliff of Danville; one sister, Lillian Mangrum of Troutville; three brothers, Willie Joe Setliff Jr., Calvin G. Setliff and Eldridge R. Setliff, all of Danville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Andrew "Andy" Setliff, Howard Setliff and Earl Setliff.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Linwood Hairfield officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the son's residence, 204 Setliff Street.

Roy W. Sigmon

CANTON, Ohio - Roy W. Sigmon, 90, of Canton, Ohio, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his residence following an illness.

Born August 25, 1911, in Rocky Mount, Va., he was the son of Edward Sigmon and Martha Moran Sigmon.

He was married to Alma S. Sigmon, who predeceased him in 1995. He retired from the Ohio Paper Tubes in Canton after 40 years of service.

He is survived by one daughter, Frances Ross of Spokane, Wash.; three sisters, Helen Mauthe of Lakeland, Fla., Mozelle Robinson of Rocky Mount, Va. and Dorothy Buckner of Canton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his wife, by one son, William Roy Sigmon, one daughter, Gloria S. Thompson, and two sisters.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Meadows officiating.

The family will receive friends at the granddaughter's residence, Becky Spencer, 406 Seminole Trail, Danville.

Clara Swift

DANVILLE, Va. - Clara Thompson Swift, age 72, of 221 Franklin Turnpike, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.

Born December 2, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Moses T. Thompson and Mary L. Thompson.

She was employed by Country Club Lanes II and later by Professional Pharmacy Snack Bar until her retirement. She was a former member of the After-Five La Sertoma Club of Danville, VA.

She was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church and was currently attending Freedom Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Boswell and husband Harold of Alabama, and Patsy Sheffield and husband Terry of Danville, VA and one son, Gary R. Horsley, SR and wife Janice of Danville, VA. She is also survived by five sisters, Mary Nance, Geneva Fowler, Doris Bailey, Sarah (Jessie) Horsley, Jean Cook, all of Danville, VA.

She was predeceased by one sister, Virgie Mize, and two brothers, Wallace Thompson and Geames (Garnett) Thompson.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ray Horsley, Shawn Horsley, Christy Horsley, Melissa Sheffield and Edward Gauldin and wife Sara, and two great-grandchildren, Trent Gauldin and Kaitlyn Horsley.

She is also survived by special former daughter-in-law Diane Sigmon and a special friend, Angie Haymore, mother of Kaitlyn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 5 at Swicegood Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Hall and Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends 7 PM to 8:30 PM Thursday, July 4 at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Francis Haden Tucker

HURT, Va. - Francis Haden Tucker, age 70, of 400 Prospect Road, Hurt, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 in Greensboro, N.C.

Born November 19, 1931 in Evington, he was a son of the late, Ammon Benjamin Tucker and Blanche Lemon Tucker. Mr. Tucker was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Tucker and a half-sister, Georgie Cox. He was a retired Police Chief for the Town of Altavista and a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Tucker was presently working as a salesman for Vista Auto Sales.

He is survived by his wife, Elva Hancock Tucker of the residence; a son, Dennis H. Tucker and his wife Robyn Owen Tucker of Gretna; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Etta and Gene Bennett of Lynchburg and Darlene Littles of Altavista; five grandchildren, Lee Tucker, Emily Tucker, Ben Tucker, Elizabeth Tucker and Sarah Tucker.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002 at New Prospect Baptist Church by Rev. Brady Willis and Mike Stephenson, Minister. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 400 Prospect Road, Hurt.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the New Prospect Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 547, Hurt or the Hurt Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 727 Hurt, Va. 24563.

Edward Walters

DANVILLE, Va. - Minister Edward "Rabbit" Walters, 30, of 4540 Golf Club Road, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 29, 1971, in Danville, he was the son of Ella Carter Walters, who predeceased him, and Roosevelt Walters, who survives.

He was an associate minister of Greater New Jerusalem Apostolic Church.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include one sister, Janice Coles of Danville; three brothers, Billie Ray Poole, Charles Dewitt Poole and Troy Lee Hunt, all of Danville.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Bishop John M. Burton Sr. officiating. Interment will follow at Walters-Poole family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Algie F. Bradshaw

DANVILLE, Va. - Algie F. Bradshaw, Sr., 79, of 2271 Robinhood Drive, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 4, 1922, he was the son of Eugene Bradshaw and Lillie Bell Henderson, both deceased. He was married to Sarah Dillard Bradshaw, who survives. He was a retired employee of the Diston Corp.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Melba Lyde of Philadelphia, and Sandra Jones of Washington, D.C.; four sons, William Bradshaw and Kelvin Bradshaw, Sr., both of Martinsville, Steve Bradshaw, Sr. of Danville and Algie Bradshaw, Jr. of Philadelphia; and one sister, Venettta Snipes of Philadelphia. In addition, there is a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2271 Robinhood Drive.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the East New Hope Baptist Church. The Rev. Rufus Fuller will officiate. Interment will follow in the Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

Haywood Bennett Collins

DANVILLE, Va. - Haywood Bennett Collins, age 79, of 6089 Kenridge Circle, Danville, passed away Sept. 8, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center, Danville.

Mr. Collins was born July 8, 1923, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Wade Collins and Octava Shelton Collins. He was also predeceased by his wife, Peggy Moore Collins.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelia C. Wood and her husband, Steve of Danville; one sister, Lucille C. Dalton of Gretna; three brothers, Elton Collins of Martinsville, Allie Collins of Gretna and Wayne Collins of Chatham.

He was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.

Mr. Collins was predeceased by one sister, Agnes Collins; and one brother, Rudolph Collins.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

The family received friends Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Gayle S. Crumpton

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Gayle S. Crumpton, 62, of 239 Foster Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at her residence following several months of declining health.

She was born in Alamance County Sept. 21, 1939. She was the daughter of Fred and Mary Sue Hicks Stuck.

She graduated from Bartlett-Yancey High School and attended UNC-G. She was also a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, and she was the Director of the Board of Elections of Caswell County and was involved in the Relay for Life cancer program.

Funeral services will be Tuesday 2:30 p.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bryan Faggart and Jerel Law. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors are husband, Ronnie Crumpton of the home, a daughter, Rhonda Crumpton of Greensboro, a son Ross Crumpton and his wife Sabrina of Yanceyville, one sister Camilla Law and husband Charles of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends Monday 7-9 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Edna Haltiwanger Derrick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Edna Haltiwanger Derrick, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Presbyterian Hospital after a very brief illness. She was born in Salley, S.C., on July 31, 1909, the only child of Edwin Gantt and Belle McMillan Haltiwanger. She graduated from Coker College in 1931 and was married to William Edward Derrick on June 15, 1932. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1984. She retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System having taught at Piedmont and Spaugh Junior High Schools.

She lived in the Paw Creek community since 1943 and was an active member of Thrift United Methodist Church. She continued to teach the Ladies Bible Class until the Sunday before her death. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, ADK Sorority, and Pilot Club. She was a volunteer for Bethlehem Center for more than 20 years and a life member of United Methodist Women.

She is survived by five children: Mary Henry and her husband Jerry of Shelby, N.C., Edwin Derrick of Salley, S.C., Charles Derrick and his wife Judy of Danville, David Derrick and his wife Barbara of Charlotte, and Dick Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Chad Derrick and his wife, Kim of Charlotte; Ryan Derrick of Raleigh; David Henry and his wife, Clare Hirn of Louisville, Ky.; Joe Henry and his wife Melanie Ciccone of South Pasadena, Calif.; Catherine Twomey and her husband, Patrick of Appleton, WI; Andy Henry and his wife, Natalie Cole of Royal Oak, Mich.; and Reed Derrick of Spartanburg, S.C. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Thrift United Methodist Church with the Reverend Loretta Stutz, the Reverend Dr. Jeff Pattersosn and the Reverend Gerald L. Ramsey, officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Thrift United Methodist Church, PO Box 205, Paw Creek, NC 28130.

Louise Osborne Hedrick

CHATHAM, Va. - Louise Osborne Hedrick, 75, of 111 Whittle Street, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 30, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Bob Osborne and Elsie Atkinson Osborne.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet L. Hedrick of Worcester, Mass.; a son, C. Russell Hedrick of Chatham; a sister, Virginia O. Saunders of Chatham; and four grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clearance Berkley Hedrick.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chatham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn and the Rev. Charles Wickham officiating. Interment will be in the Chatham Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of the son, 226 Whittle Street.

Elizabeth C. Sydnor Landis

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth C. Sydnor Landis, 96, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 after several years of declining health.

Born March 13, 1906, in Danville, she was the daughter of Rochette Venable Raine and Clement Adkisson Sydnor of Lynchburg. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School and attended Lynchburg College and the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago. In Lynchburg, she was active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir and at many social functions, worked at both Lynchburg Department of Health and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In 1933, she was married to Arthur Clair Landis, who predeceased her. Prior to her illness, she was a homemaker, was active in community affairs and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C., her residence for many years.

She is survived by four children, Arthur C. Landis of Catawissa, Pa., Sydnor L. Dickenson of Danville, Richard R. Landis of Churchville and Suzanne Landis Sadler of Danville; three brothers, Lavelon Sydnor, Kendall Sydnor, both of Lynchburg and William Sydnor of Staunton; and one sister, Rochet Sydnor Blair of Charlottesville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to charities of choice.
