Baby Chilton

Zachary Brian Chilton died Wednesday night, Feb. 4, 1998, at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Born Jan. 30, 1998, in Chapel Hill, N.C., he was the son of Michael Paul Chilton and Crystal Marie Giles.

In addition to his parents, survivors include paternal grandparents, Randy Wayne and Audrey Sigmon Chilton of Pelham, N.C., and Percy Sigmon of Danville; maternal grandparents, Steve and Janice Irby of Prospect Hill, N.C., and William and Donna Giles of Blairs; paternal great-grandparents, Ted & Ruth Chilton of Danville and Dorothy Simmons of Keeling; maternal great-grandparents, Curtis Dove and Nellie Jackson, Finny and Barbara Irby and Faye Giles.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Reva Sigmon.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. today in the Sigmon Family cemetery by the Rev. James Albert.

The family will receive friends at 111 Rosewood Lane, Danville.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dora Clay

Dora Wyatt Clay, 68, 1702 N. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at her residence.

Born March 9, 1929, in Halifax County, she was a daughter of Henry Lee Wyatt and Gracie Betterton Wyatt.

She was married to Charlie Henry Clay, who survives.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She had been employed as a nurse's aide at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Edna Cundiff of Danville and Linda Burton of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a son, Charlie James Clay of Danville; two sisters, Elizabeth Hedrick and Lillie Hundley, both of Danville; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jimmy Hussey and the Rev. Cleo Hundley. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

James Durham

CHATHAM - Funeral services for James A. Durham, 69, 380 Gilbert Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Full Gospel Fellowship Church by the Rev. Roger Ewing, the Rev. William Bates and the Rev. Cabel Cobbs. Interment icon will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, where military honors will be performed by American Legion Memorial Post 325 Honor Guard.

He died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 1998, at his residence after a lengthy illness from a neurodegenerative disease, progressive supranuclear palsy.

Born Nov. 24, 1928, in Henry County, he was a son of David Durham and Nannie Earles Durham.

He was married to Hazel Bates Durham, who survives.

During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army.

A resident of the Danville area for most of his life, he was owner and operator of Northside Tire & Battery.

He was a charter member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, James Frankie Durham of Danville; a daughter, Joyce Estabrook of Danville; three brothers, Melvin Durham of Martinsville, Billy Durham of Danville and Joseph Durham of Pelham, N.C.; five sisters, Mary Gravley, Betty Bates, Barbara Snead and Faye Moore, all of Danville, and Frances Reynolds of Callands; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Marlowe.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Josephine Hughes

Josephine Carter Hughes, 70, 326 Cunningham St., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at her residence.

Born March 30, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Fletcher "Bud" Carter and Emma Leftwich Carter.

She worked with Roman Eagle Memorial Home for many years as a cook.

Survivors include three sisters, Earlie White, Lilliam McCullen and Cora Scott, all of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at White Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Tinsley. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward H. Motley

@Edward H. Motley, 83, 70 Parrish Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Stratford Medical Center.

Born June 15, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George and Celestia Lindsey Motley.

He was a cemetery technician for the City of Danville.

He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Motley Jr. of Jersey City, N.J., and George Motley of Sumnter, S.C.; four daughters, Rosa Wilson of Danville, Anna Miller of New York, Sara Ferguson of the residence and Willie Mae Logan of Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, Ralph Motley, Stonewall Motley and John Motley, all of Blairs; two sisters, Odessa Valentine of Danville and Louise Steinback of New York; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Cypress. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Granville Smoot Jr.

BARNWELL, S.C. - Granville Smoot Jr., 73, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998.

Born July 31, 1924, in Keysville, Va., he was a son of Granville Smoot Sr., and Beatrice Cheek.

He was married to Dorotha Neel Smoot, who survives.

He was a retired area supervisor with E.I. DuPont Savannah River Plant.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Barnwell United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board.

He was past master of Harmony Lodge 17, Barnwell. He was also a member of VFW and the Happy Go Lucky Camping Group.

In addition to his wife of Barnwell, survivors include a son, Granville Smoot III of Barnwell; two daughters, Rhea S. Ridgeway of Barnwell and Neva S. Fichling of Blackville; a brother, Donald Smoot of Woodbridge, Va.; a sister, Helen Hayden of Danville, Va.; five grandsons; and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Mole Funeral Home Chapel, Barnwell, by the Rev. Bob Clyburn. Burial will be in Barwell County Memory Gardens cemetery with Masonic rites.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

James Starkey

James Thomas Starkey, 79, 329 Hampton Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at his residence after declining health since May.

Born May 2, 1918, in Halifax County, he was a son of Bernard C. Starkey Sr. and Melissa Neal Starkey.

On Jan. 26, 1974, he was married to Mildred Barker Starkey, who survives.

A life long resident of the Danville area, he was retired from the former Memorial Hospital of Danville (Danville Regional Medical Center), where he worked as host.

He was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and the Kent Masonic Lodge 305.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Susan Starkey Dykes of Danville.

He was predeceased by his brothers, B.C. Starkey Jr., M. Neal Starkey, Marvin Lee Starkey and Lemuel Marsh II.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Kentuck Baptist Church by the Rev. David Henry. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Eleanor Thompson

CHATHAM - Eleanor Burton Thompson, 83, 210 Hurt St., died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at Riverside Health Care Center in Danville.

Born March 14, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Henry Burton and Louise Burch Burton.

She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her sister, Anne Burton Marlowe of Eden, N.C.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Chatham Burial Park by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home.

William 'Willie' Thornton Jr.

William "Willie" Preston Thornton Jr., 78, 6 Elizabeth St., died Thursday morning, Feb. 5, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after a decline in health for a number of years.

Born Oct. 3, 1919, in the Axton community, he was the son of William Preston Thornton Sr., and Lucy Barker Thornton.

For the past 27 years, he had been a resident of Elizabeth Street.

He worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., for a number of years, and retired in 1991.

He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Chandler Thornton of the residence; two daughters, Martha Kimberly Thornton and Lou Ann Thornton, both of the residence.

He was predeceased by six sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard Markham. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence in the Edgewood community.

Dora Clay

Virginia Edmunds

Virginia Riddle Edmunds, of Danville, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at her residence after several years of declining health.

A native of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Riddle and Elsie Shields Riddle.

She was married for 48 years to John Hedrick Edmunds, who died Aug. 8, 1996.

A life long resident of Pittsylvania County and Danville, she had taught school in the Pittsylvania County Public School System prior to becoming secretary and treasurer of Hedrick Johnson Construction Company.

She was a member of the former South Hall Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jane Dodson May of New Orleans; two sisters, Dorothy R. Durham and Johnie Ann R. Farmer, both of Danville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Nell R. Lynch and Barbara R. Hughes.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
