Daisy Payne

Daisy Payne Payne, 93, formerly of the Swansonville Community, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She had been in declining health for three years and at Roman Eagle for 15 months.

The daughter of LeRoy T. Payne and Nellie Allen Payne, she was born May 24, 1904, in Pittsylvania County.

She was married to David Jackson Payne, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church where she was the oldest member and taught Sunday school for many years.

Most of her life had been spent in the Swansonville Community.

She was employed by Dan River Inc. in the Sewing Room until retiring in 1964.

She is survived by a daughter, Blanche P. Arnn of Danville; two sons, Landon Payne and David J. Payne Jr., both of Dry Fork; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Allen Holder and the Rev. Jack Waddell. Interment icon will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 to 8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Blanche Arnn, 182 Alpine Drive.

Willie Julius Green

RICHMOND - The Reverend Willie Julius Green, 84, died February 9, 1998, after a brief illness.

He was a native of Dry Fork.

He was married for 59 years to Thelma Lee Hambrick Green, who preceded him in death.

He was a graduate of Roanoke College, Holmes Bible School and Washington & Lee University.

He was an ordained minister of the Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 60 years and pastored churches in Virginia and West Virginia.

During World War II, he served as a hospital ship chaplain and retired from the Army Reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The Rev. Green was chaplain at McGuire Veterans Medical Center in Richmond for 20 years before his retirement in 1974.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Reeves Green and his wife, Tricia, and Douglas Lee Green and his wife, Jane; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hannah Daniel and Rebecca Green, both of Dry Fork.

Funeral services and interment will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Dry Fork.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road.

Rebecca Griffins

Rebecca Rembert Griffins, 83, of Eldercare of Franklin County, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998.

Born Aug. 13, 1914, in Sumter, S.C., she was the daughter of Edward Rembert and Louella Reed Rembert.

She was married to Walter Henry Griffins, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her son, the Rev. Walter L. Griffins of Danville; and eight grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in North Wood cemetery in Philadelphia.

The family will be at 1289 Pinecroft Road.

Wylene Holland

RINGGOLD - Wylene Cassada Holland, 71, 865 Homestead Trail, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at her residence after 10 years of declining health.

Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Berkley Cassada and Hallie Davis Cassada.

On April 6, 1946, she was married to Carroll William Holland, who survives.

A life long resident of Pittsylvania County, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Whitmell Christian Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Carroll W. "Bill" Holland Jr. and Calvin L. Holland, both of Ringgold; four daughters, Carolyn H. Lumpkin, Dianne H. Beverly and Cheryl H. Ashworth, all of Danville, and Cathy J. Holland of Ringgold; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Berkley Wayne Cassada, David Ray Cassada and William Boyd Cassada; and a sister, Jewell Rhena Cassada.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Andrew Oakes and the Rev. Kyle Flora. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 865 Homestead Trail, Ringgold, off of State Route 726.

Russell Stewart

Russell Holbrook Stewart, 84, formerly of S. High Street, Eden, N.C., died Sunday morning, Feb. 8, 1998, at Brian Nursing Center in Yanceyville, N.C.

Born in Draper, N.C., he was a retired loom fixer at Fieldcrest Mills.

He was a member of Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Melvine Morgan of Richmond and Russelline "Ann" Fulcher of Martinsville; a brother, Dillard Stewart of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Knowles of Danville and Helen Chilton of Mt. Holley, N.J.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Draper Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment icon will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Fair Funeral Home, Eden, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle Wiles

VANLEER, Tenn. - Myrtle Dalton Wiles, 89, formerly of Danville, Va., died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Hillcrest Nursing Center in Ashland City.

A native of Virginia, she was a daughter of Corina Haley Dalton and Dr. Felix Dalton.

She was married to Irvin Wiles, who predeceased her.

She was retired as manager of The Virginia Manor in Danville, Va.

She was a member of Charlotte Fagan United Methodist Church in Charlotte.

Survivors include a son, M.W. "Bill" Colbert of Vanleer; a sister, Ruth Durham of Gretna, Va.; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home, Dickson, by the Rev. Duane Cowan. Burial was in Dickson County Memorial Gardens.

John Winston Creath

John Winston Creath, 81, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 8, 1998, at his residence after suffering a brain hemorrhage five days prior.

Burial was in the family cemetery.

Born in Elmo of the Paces community in Halifax County, on Sept. 24, 1916, he was the son of the Rev. William Thomas Creath and Celeste Fontaine Creath.

He was first married to Elizabeth Spotswood Stebbins Creath, who died in 1974. He was later married to Irene Thomas Greeley Creath, who survives.

He attended North Carolina State University and served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.

He spent most of his life in the Paces community, where he farmed.

During his lifetime, he taught Sunday school and served as deacon in several area churches, and was a member of Centerville Baptist Church at the time of his death.

He also served on Halifax County Board of Commissioners.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include six sons, J. Winston Creath Jr. of Perry, Ga., and Patrick F. Creath and David S. Creath, both of South Boston, and Matthew H. Creath of Germany, Frederick K. Creath of Suffolk and W. Andrew Creath of Danville; four daughters, Martha C. Joyce and Amy C. Osborne, both of Danville, and Elizabeth C. Young of Pelham, N.C., and Charlotte C. Perdue of Lynchburg; three stepdaughters, Dot G. Carr of South Boston, Nancy G. Childress of Roxboro, N.C., and Lou G. Bowman of Danville; and 25 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Arbor Baptist Church in the Elmo community.

George Johnson

George Felix Johnson, 76, 144 Wesley Drive, Apt. 8, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C.

Born Jan. 1, 1922, in Danville, he was a son of George Johnson Sr. and Patty Johnson Burton.

He was married to Elizabeth Johnson, who survives.

He retired from the City of Danville after 18 years of service.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include two daughters, Annie Easter and Gloria Robertson; a sister, Nancy Chaney of Danville; three grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.

There will be a memorial service 3 p.m. Thursday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 300 Terry Ave., Danville, by Brothers Joe Gravely and Arnie Cox.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John W. 'Bill' Parrish Sr.

John W. "Bill" Parrish Sr., 75, of Virginia Avenue, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Kinston, N.C., he was a son of Alvin Emerson Parrish and Margaret Bryant Parrish.

On July 4, 1946, he was married to Norma Clark Parrish, who survives.

A graduate of George Washington High School and Danville Technical Institute, he worked for 40 years with Norfolk Southern Railroad before retiring in 1983.

He was a member of Norfolk Southern Retirement Group. He was also a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and clerk of session and was a member of the choir.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the European Theater during World War II.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, John W. Parrish Jr. of Danville; and a brother, Harold E. Parrish of Houston.

He was predeceased by a brother, Donald E. Parrish.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home memorial chapel by the Rev. Albert Williamson, the Rev. Adolf Otersen and the Rev. C.W. Thomas West. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence on Virginia Avenue.

Doris Stroud

Doris Snead Stroud, 74, formerly of 56 Garland St., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after 10 years of declining health.

Born May 26, 1923, in Sutherlin, she was a daughter of Luther Baker Snead and Susie McGregor Snead Myers.

She was first married to C.W. Meador, who survives. She was later married to James B. Stroud Sr., who is predeceased.

A life-long resident of Pittsylvania County and the Danville area, she worked as an operator with C & P Telephone Co. for more than 30 years prior to her retirement.

She was a member of the Pioneers Club and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Tolley of Danville; her first husband, C.W. Meador of Southport, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Yeatts of Danville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by a sister, Anne Gerringer Kowitz, and a brother, Carroll C. Snead Sr.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Gilbert Hawks.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Street chapel, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Vickie Tolley, 6329 Mount Cross Road.
