Fred White

SMITHFIELD - Fred Leroy White, 79, formerly of Danville, died Monday, March 2, 1998.

He was a former supervisor at Dan River Mills and a member of Smithfield Baptist Church. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Greene White of 200 Lumar Road, Smithfield; a son, Larry Lee White of Fredericksburg; and a granddaughter.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, March 4, 1998, in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield.

Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Everette Baugher

Lester Everette "Bogie" Baugher Jr., 76, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past two weeks and was in the hospital the last two days.

Born Aug. 20, 1921, in Danville, he was the son of Lester Everette Baugher and Grace Mae Duncan Baugher.

He spent most of his life in Danville, where he had retired from Corning Inc. as a security officer after 35 years.

A member of the former New Design United Methodist Church, he was a life member of American Legion Post 325. He also was a life member of the Ballard Pruitt Post 647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, life member of P.T. Boats Inc., life member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Hunt Club, and a member of the Ringgold Golf Club.

He was active in many sports, and had served as a local baseball umpire from 1949-1969.

During World War II, Baugher served with the Ron 15 P.T. Boat Squadron of the U.S. Navy in North Africa and Italy.

On March 14, 1969, he was married to Barbara Poteat Baugher.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Nancy B. McGrew of Glen Allen, Paula B. Myers of Garretson, S.D., and Gina B. Fox of Danville; one son, Tom Godfrey of Danville; two sisters, Muriel B. Kiesler and Gloria B. Jones, both of Virginia Beach; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover chapel by the Rev. Thomas Deal. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover chapel and other times at the residence off Franklin Turnpike.

William Brown

PENHOOK - William Cecil Brown, 66, of 1392 Armstrong Road, died Saturday, March 7, 1998.

Born Dec. 5, 1931, he was a son of Hubert and Bertha Houston Brown. He was employed as a bulldozer operator.

Surviving are his wife, Dotsie Doss Brown of the residence; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tonda Brown of Chatham; a son, C. Todd Brown of the residence and special friend, Marsha Brooks of Chatham; two grandchildren, Cory Brown and Joy Brown, both of Chatham; a brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Dixie Brown of Penhook; a sister, Paige B. Shoemaker of Rocky Mount; a mother-in-law, Nannie B. Doss of Gretna; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry Byrd and Mildred Doss of Penhook and a special friend, Elton Cundiff of Glade Hill; a brother-in-law, Morris Fuller of Glade Hill; four sisters-in-law, Frances Brown of Redwood, Dottie Jean Martin of Redwood, Alease Fralin of Glade Hill and Peggy Brown of Rocky Mount; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Chapman Brown, Dennis Brown, Henry Brown, James Brown, Wayne Brown and Roscoe Brown; and two sisters, Helen B. Fuller and Hazel B. Fuller.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Liberty Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Grinnell officiating. Interment icon will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 p.m. Sunday, where the family will be from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Christian Church Memorial Fund, 420 Smith Mountain Road, Sandy Level, VA 24161.

Lynch Funeral Home in Rocky Mount is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Hodnett

CHATHAM - Joe Hodnett, 61, of 3289 Chalk Level Road, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 15, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Johnny Hodnett and Alice Clark Hodnett.

Prior to his retirement on disability, he was employed by the Fuller Motley Dairy.

He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.

Survivors included one brother, James Oakes of Patterson, N.J.; seven sisters, Mattie Morrison, Doris Carter and Martha Dodson, all of Chatham, Rosa Terry of Pennington, N.J., Eva Jamerson of Jamaica, N.Y., Julia Whaley of Trenton, N.J., and Kathleen Witcher of Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, John Henry Hodnett, Oscar Hodnett, Willie Hodnett, Edward Hodnett and Walter D. Hodnett.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Hubert White. Burial will be in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Meriwell Dodson, 1193 Mill Creek Road, Chatham.

Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

James Miller

James Arthur Miller, 74, of 20 Marshall St., Irvington, N.J., and formerly of the Mt. Airy community near Gretna, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, in St. James Hospital in Newark, N.J.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, he was the son of James and Sallie Wray Miller.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by E.I. Dupont Co. in Newark, N.J. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Gretna.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Miller of Union, N.J.; one daughter, Muriel "Cookie" Miller of Union, N.J.; one son, Leroy Miller of Newport News; four brothers, Gordon Miller, Jack Miller, Latane Miller, all of Gretna, and David Miller of Petersburg; three sisters, Minnie A. Edwards of Roanoke, Virginia Glass of Java, and Catherine Coleman of Danville.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Naamon Miller, Alsee Miller and John Miller; and one sister, Lucille Hall.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Miller Funeral Home in Gretna.

Vivian Swain

The funeral for Vivian J. Swain, 74, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Hilltop Apts. No. 104, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the chapel of Barker Funeral Home by the Rev. Roger Ewing with interment in Highland Burial Park.

She died Friday afternoon, March 6, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 3, 1924, in Danville, she was a daughter of John Abner Johnson and Nettie Elizabeth Pickney Johnson.

She worked at Dan River Inc. in the No. 4 spin department until her retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was predeceased by her husband, Curtis R. Swain, and her brother, Maurice W. Johnson.

Survivors include a daughter, Bobbie J. Jordan of Danville; a sister, Opal Mullins of Danville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the sister's residence of 1925 Old Mayfield Road.

Ben D. Emerson Jr.

Benjamin Dick Emerson Jr., 35, 415 Bryant Ave., died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at the home of his mother, Ruth Stewart Griffin, 333 Church St., following a decline in health of nine months.

Born July 17, 1962, in Danville, he was the son of Benjamin Dick Emerson Sr. and Ruth Stewart Griffin, and stepson of Richard Walter Griffin Sr.

He lived his entire life in Danville, where he was employed for Rainbow Contractors as a carpenter.

He was married to Tammy Faye Childress on April 16, 1985.

In addition to his wife, mother and stepfather of Danville, and father of Eden, N.C., survivors include his step-grandmother, Erley G. Smith of Ruffin, N.C.; three sisters, Sandra Hudgins and Brenda Hammock, both of Danville, and Peggy Sue Dove of Pelham, N.C.; two stepbrothers, Richard Griffin Jr. of Eden, and Donald Griffin of San Antonio, Texas; and one half-sister, Brandy Dickens of Eden.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Ronald E. Graham. Interment icon will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence of his mother.

Royal E. Bowyer

Royal E. Bowyer, 84, of West Point, Va., died Sunday, March 8, 1998.

He retired in 1978 as the assistant technical director after 40 years of service with the Chesapeake Corp. of Virginia.

He was a deacon of the First Baptist Church in West Point and a former member of the New Kent Board of Supervisors, where he served as chairman for nine years.

He was also a former member of the West Point Lions club.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Evelyn Bowyer of Danville; two brothers, Luther Lee Bowyer of Bedford and Malcolm Sidney Bowyer of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Kenneth Bowyer Jr. of Lewiston, N.C., and Brooke Gauldin of Danville, Va.; one great-grandchild, Bryan Gauldin of Danville; four nieces, Edna Sperberg of Forest, Marilyn Bowyer of Roanoke, Jane Wooldridge of Bedford and Sarah Marley of Fuquay, N.C.; four nephews, Buddy Bowyer of Salem, Sydney Bowyer of Roanoke, Bill Hubbard of Lorton and John Saunders of Salem.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home in West Point. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Morgan's Baptist Church cemetery in Moneta.

The family will receive friends Tuesday 7-8:30 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home.

Ben D. Emerson Jr.

Benjamin Dick Emerson Jr., 35, 415 Bryant Ave., died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at the home of his mother, Ruth Stewart Griffin, 333 Church St., following a decline in health of nine months.

Lavera A. Henderson

Lavera Adele Henderson, of Prince George County, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998.

A native of Callands, she was the daughter of Clara Reynolds and Eddie L. Wells.

She was married to Robert C. Henderson.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Denise Henderson of Alexandria; two sisters, Cordie Payne of Danville and Iris Hall of South Boston; four brothers, William Wells of Atlanta, Raleigh Wells and Stewart Wells of Callands, and Clyde Wells of Danville.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Highland Burial Park in Danville.

The family will receive friends today from 7-8:30 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son.

James Miller

GRETNA - James Arthur Miller, 74, 20 Marshall St., Irvington, N.J., and formerly of Gretna, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, in St. James Hospital in Newark, N.J.

Born in Pittsylvania County Sept. 2, 1923, he was a son of James and Sallie Wray Miller.

Prior to his retirement he was employed by the E.I. DuPont Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Mount Airy Baptist Church in Gretna.

He was married to Helen Woodard Miller, who survives.

In addition to his wife of Union, N.J., survivors include a daughter, Muriel "Cookie" Miller, of Union; a son, Leroy Miller of Newport News; four brothers, Gordon Miller, Jack Miller and Latane Miller, all of Gretna, and David Miller of Petersburg; three sisters, Minnie A. Edwards of Roanoke, Virginia Glass of Java and Catherine Coleman of Danville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Naamon, Alsee and John Miller, and one sister, Lucille Hall.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Airy Baptist Church in Gretna by the Rev. Robert P. King with burial in the Miller family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Home Friday evening from 7-8 p.m. and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Miller, 700 Zion Road in Gretna.

Miller Funeral Home in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Anderson

Margaret Phillips Anderson, 92, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in King's Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1906, in Bear County, N.C., a daughter of the late Samuel Monroe Phillips and Emma Burroughs Phillips.

Mrs. Anderson had been a resident of Danville since 1932 until she became a resident of King's Grant in January of 1994. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church until it closed in 1988, where upon she returned to her Baptist roots by joining Moffett Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by her husband, Banister Anderson, and her son, George Banister Anderson.

She is survived by her daughter, Emily Anderson Parker, and son-in-law, James W. Parker Jr., both of Harrisonburg; a sister, Mary Phillips Daniels of Durham, N.C.; six grandchildren, Margaret Anderson Paysinger of Orlando, Fla., Pam Anderson Arnett of Keswick, Emily Anderson Duke of Cornelius, N.C., James W. Parker III of Dublin, N.H., David A. Parker of Lake Oswega, Ore., and George P. Parker of Richmond; also six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Burial Park in Danville by the Rev. Susanne Schultz Martin, chaplain at King's Grant.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials donations may be sent to the George B. Anderson Scholarship, Randolph Macon College, Ashland, Va. 23005.
