Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Muzzetta Blaine

Muzzetta Ferrell Blaine, 90, 522 Cleveland St., died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at her residence.

Born May 1, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Raleigh Ferrell and Mattie Ferrell.

She was married to Ernest Blaine, who predeceased her.

She was employed by Dibrell Brothers for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Xelia Hickson of Danville; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday at Vance Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Curtis Strater. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

'Bunny' Davis

RICHMOND - Bernard Franklin "Bunny" Davis, 74, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond.

Born April 5, 1924, in Kent, R.I., he was a son of Robert Weldon Davis and Annie Zimmeriman Davis.

On Dec. 25, 1953, he was married to Virginia Wells Davis, who survives.

He attended Bartlett Yancey High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He was a former licensed funeral director and had worked at several funeral homes in Virginia and North Carolina. Later, he was a sales representative for Royal Rubber Company and also Sumter Casket Company.

He was also the former owner and operator of Davis and Son Removal Service until his retirement in 1990.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Bernard F. Davis Jr. of Richmond; a brother, Wayne W. Davis of Danville; three sisters, Mae Oliver of Greensboro, N.C., Rose Etta Purguson of Hatborough, Pa., and Dorothy Ridenour of Apple Valley, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Weldon Davis Jr. and George Henry Davis.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. George Rumney.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Townes Funeral Home.

Roscoe Edwards

Roscoe Cornelius Edwards, 75, 1711 Staunton Ave., N.W. Roanoke, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.

Born April 22, 1922, in Ridgeville, S.C., he was a son of Henry Edwards and Flossie Perry Edwards.

He was married to Minnie A. Edwards, who survives.

Prior to his retirement, he was a professional tailor and worked for J.P. Taylor Co., and Fox, Hunt & Lloyd and Davidson's Clothing Stores.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic Pacific in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Purple Heart.

He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1444 in Roanoke and a national member of Disabled American Veterans.

He was also a member of Pilgram Baptist Church in Roanoke.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Cornelius "Cutty" Edwards, Larry Edwards Sr. and Henry Edwards, all of Roanoke; a daughter, Cynthia Odomes of Atlanta; a sister, Bluett Fisher of Ridgeville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1415 8th St., N.W. Roanoke, by the Rev. Dwight O. Steele Sr. Burial will be in the Miller Family cemetery, Gretna, with military rites performed by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Post 46 of Altavista.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd McDaniel

HURT - Floyd Junior McDaniel, 57, 504 Prospect Road, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at his residence.

Born Dec. 5, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lee McDaniel and Hazel Tuck McDaniel.

He was married to Sandra David McDaniel, who survives.

He was an employee of Ross Laboratories.

He was predeceased by his brother, William McDaniel.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Deborah M. Irby and Samantha McDaniel, both of Hurt; a son, Michael Crews of Danville; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Prospect Baptist Church by the Rev. Brady Willis. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Nancy Phillipson

CHATHAM - Nancy Tredway Jones Phillipson, 92, a native of Chatham, died at her home surrounded by family on Thursday, April 16, 1998.

She was born May 5, 1905. She was the daughter of John Martin Jones and Mary Emma Whitehead Jones.

She was predeceased by her brothers, John Winston Jones, Leslie Reid Jones and most recently, the Honorable Langhorne Reginald Jones.

She was also predeceased by her husband, Albert Phillipson; a daughter, Nancy de Groot; and a cousin whom she raised, Charles V. Lang.

She graduated from Chatham Hall and attended Drexel University and Agnes Scott College. She was married in 1930 and moved north to West Orange, N.J., where she raised her family.

She was considered a second mother to many and was known for her generosity, compassion, quick sense of humor and her Southern accent.

Upon Mr. Phillipson's retirement, they returned to Chatham. She was a devoted member of the Chatham Presbyterian Church, of which her family were founding members. She was the last member of her family to have heard from her grandfather first-hand accounts of the Civil War.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Peterson; six grandchildren, Jane de Groot Dray, Carol de Groot Bois, William Albert Peterson, Charles Earl Peterson, Alison de Groot Guidera and Leslie Jane Peterson; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also survived by her nieces and nephews, Barbara Lee Jones Guidera, Mary Rutledge Ward, Maebelle Jones Shelton, Harry Wilson Jones and Langhorne R. Jones Jr.

She was also predeceased by two nephews, Leslie Reid Jones and Richard Simpson Jones.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 1998, from the graveside at Chatham Burial Park by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn. Interment icon will be in Chatham Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 26 Whittle St., Chatham.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad.

Samuel Pickerel Sr.

GRETNA - Samuel Vernon Pickerel Sr., 78, 1800 South Main St., died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Autumn Care of Altavista.

Born March 4, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Posie C. Pickerel and Eva Brown Pickerel.

He was a retired game warden with the state of Virginia, an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Myers Pickerel of the residence; three sons, Samuel V. Pickerel Jr. of Lynchburg, and John H. Pickerel and David M. Pickerel, both of Cashiers, N.C.; three daughters, Rebecca Dalton of Gretna, Mary Kathryn Pickerel of Richmond and Nancy Woodward of Bowling Green; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Gretna Burial Park by the Rev. Walker Pettyjohn.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cora Thurman

Cora Moore Thurman, 96, died Wednesday night, April 15, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, where she had been a patient for the past year.

Born July 23, 1901, in Vance County, N.C., she was the daughter of Howard Acie Moore and Adelaid Tucker Moore.

She was married to William James Thurman Sr., who predeceased her.

A resident of Danville for most of her life, she retired from Dan River Inc., in 1942.

She was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Thurman Christiansen of Bradenton, Fla., and Della Thurman Cox of Danville; a son, William "Bill" Thurman Jr. of Danville; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by a daughter, Addie Howard; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Chapel by the Rev. Lewis P. Harris and the Rev. Daryl S. Joyce. Burial will be in Mt. View cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her son, William "Bill" Thurman Jr., 249 River Oak Drive.

Mark Garland

RINGGOLD - Mark Garland, 100, 304 Gunn Garland Road, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born in Pittsylvania County May 18, 1897, he was the son of Simon and Sallie Webster Garland. He was married to Sallie Harper Garland, who predeceased him.

Mr. Garland was a farmer for most of his life.

Survivors include five daughters, Ola Mae Gwynn, Louise Davis and Gracie Gunn, all of Ringgold, Myrtle Frazier of Philadelphia, and Mary Sue Sherman of Runnemede, N.J.; five sons, Edward Garland, Wilbert Garland, Matthew Garland, Samuel Garland, and Henry Lee Garland, all of Ringgold; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Rufus Fuller. Interment icon will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at 300 Gunn Garland Road in Ringgold.

Lacy Green

SOUTH BOSTON - Lacy Burgess Green, 77, 1102 Second Street, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born in Halifax County April 20, 1920, he was the son of Seddie J. Green and Ella Burgess Green.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired employee of William M. Tuck Airport.

He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Frances Thomas of Alton and Elizabeth Reaves and Ella Green both of South Boston.

The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Alton by the Rev. Harvey Warnick.

The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home tonight from 7 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence.

William Moore Jr.

GRETNA - William Andrew Moore Jr., 68, 2429 Cotton Patch Road, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, in Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born in Bangor, Maine, January 18, 1930, he was a son of William Andrew Moore Sr. and Eva Frances Eaton Moore. He was predeceased by a sister, Laura Eldreth.

He was a retired maintenance worker for the Pittsylvania County Schools.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hammock Thompson Moore of the residence; one daughter, Robin Lynn Moore of Gretna; two sons, Timothy Wayne Moore of Gretna, and Randy Dean Thompson of Danville; three brothers, David Moore of Danville, Frank Moore of Florida, and Harley Moore of Eden, N.C.; three sisters, Cleo Richardson and Loraine Edmonds, both of Danville, and Ruth Brooks of Sutherlin; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Colbert-Moran Chapel by the Rev. Glenn Graves. Interment icon will follow in the Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 2429 Cotton Patch Road in Gretna.

John Thompson

REIDSVILLE - John Nicholas Thompson, 74, 11097 Highway 150 East, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville.

Born in Caswell County to Azariah Graves and Lula Belle Stephens Thompson, he was a graduate of Bartlett-Yancey High School and attended North Carolina State University.

A member of First Baptist Church, Greensboro, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, a member of Yanceyville Rotary Club and was active in the Historical Society of Caswell County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an agricultural chemical distributor retired from Cardinal Chemical Company of Greensboro. He was a friend to all mankind. He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Margaret Graham Thompson.

Surviving are his wife, Faye Taylor Thompson of the home; one daughter, Margaret, and her husband, John Anderson of Raleigh; son, John N. Thompson Jr., and wife, Marsha, of Greensboro; three grandchildren; sisters, Ella Hobbs of Blacksburg, Va., and Nancy Crater of Burlington; brothers, Azariah G. Thompson Jr. of Lincolnton, and Lawrence Thompson of Bonita Springs, Fla.; four step-daughters, Lisa Mady of Florence, S.C., Michele Barker of Winston-Salem, Kathryn Edmonson of Apex, and Jennifer Gore of Fayetteville; and five step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville with interment in the Leasburg Community cemetery.

Visitation will be at the residence, 11097 Highway 150 East, and 400 Aberdeen Terrace, Greensboro, and for 30 minutes prior to the service at the chapel.

Memorials may be made to Locust Hill Methodist Church, Cherry Grove Volunteer Fire Department, and the Caswell EMS.
