Mildred Davis Glass

DANVILLE, Va. - Mildred Davis Glass, 80, of 195 Palm Street, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Davis and Rentha Dodson Davis.

She was married to Archie Glass, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by five daughters, Janie Davis of Los Angeles, Calif., Pastor Melissa Oakes, Minister Barbara McDaniels, both of Patterson, N.J., Evangelist Margaret Glass of East Orange, N.J., and Minster Bertha Hodnett of Danville; one son, Elder Sterling Glass of Eden, N.C.; one sister, Elizabeth Witcher of Danville; two brothers, Edward Davis and Early Davis, both of Danville; and numerous grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one daughter, Dora Mayo.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Donna Ferguson, 422 Southhampton Avenue.

Clarence Booker Jordan

DANVILLE, Va. - Clarence Booker Jordan, 81, of 722 E. Green St., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 11, 1921, in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Willis Whitfield Jordan and Mary (Mamie) Bomar Jordan.

He was married to Beatrice Waller Jordan, who survives. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired employee of Dan River, Inc.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, C.M. (Mike) Jordan of Greenville, N.C.; one daughter, Bonnie J. Daniels of Ringgold; three brothers, Haywood Jordan of Nathalie, Dickie Jordan of Brookneal and Paul Jordan of Lynchburg; one sister, Christine Hendricks of Rustburg; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Preston Jordan; two brothers, Clayton Jordan and Simmie Jordan; and three sisters, Eula Daniels, Mabel Pauley and Annie Mae Boaze.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Clover Bottom Baptist Church with Rev. Alfred Rimmer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Henderson Funeral Home in Brookneal, and will be at the residence until Friday, then at 2152 Buffalo Road, Long Island.

Marie Robertson Lattin

DANVILLE, Va. - Marie Compton Robertson Lattin, age 77, formerly of 23 Lanphere Road, Westerly, Rhode Island, died Thursday morning, July 25, 2002, at The Clipper Home in Westerly, Rhode Island, following a long illness.

Born November 29, 1924, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Joel Landon Robertson and Maude Williams Robertson.

She was educated in the Danville Public Schools and was a 1943 graduate of George Washington High School where she was co-editor of the Chatterbox. She was graduated in 1947 with a B.A. in Economics from Woman's College, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She also earned a Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

Prior to her retirement in 1991, she was a social worker for the Waterford, Connecticut Public Schools. She also had been a social worker for Family Services of New London, Connecticut.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville and was a former president of the American Association of University Women in New London, Connecticut. As a loving mother, grandmother and sister, she was always committed to family first.

She is survived by three daughters, Jean Elizabeth Lattin of Westerly, Rhode Island, Nancy Lattin Davis and her husband, Clyde Scott Davis, of Lakewood, Ohio, Jennifer Lattin Julier and her husband, Henry Samuel Julier III of Hamden, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Henry Vaillant Julier and Elspeth Robertson Julier of Hamden, Connecticut, and a sister, Betsy Robertson, of Danville. She is also survived by her companion, Prentice Andrew Lanphere, of Westerly, Rhode Island.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, August 9, 2002, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. As requested by the deceased, graveside services will be private.

The family requests that memorial be made to the charity of one's choice.

Devoreen Herndon Myers

DANVILLE, Va. - Devoreen Herndon Myers, 82, formerly of Girard St., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Riverside Health Care.

Born June 29, 1920, she was the daughter of Claude Swanson Herndon and Malloy Slade Herndon.

She was married to Melvin Myers Jr., who predeceased her. She lived her life in the Danville area and prior to retirement was employed as a nurse's aide with Roman Eagle Memorial Home. She was a member of Shelton Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Jackie T. Smith of Blairs and Diane T. Doss of Danville; one sister, Tillie H. Phelphs of Danville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one sister, Christine H. Hazelwood.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Leemont Cemetery with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of Jackie T. Smith, 515 Deerwood Drive, Blairs.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the charity of their choice.

Frank Burton Shelton

CHATHAM, Va. - Frank Burton Shelton, 83, of 609 Oakland Drive, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Abingdon Place of Danville.

Born Oct. 2, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Gallie Thomas Shelton Sr. and Ira May Shelton.

He was married to Mildred Adams Shelton, who predeceased him. He was a member of the Watson Memorial United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one sister, Thelma Atkinson of Richmond; and five brothers, Gallie Thomas "G.T." Shelton of Danville, James Sednor Shelton, Clifton A. "Cliff" Shelton, Ira M. Shelton, and Ryland G. Shelton, all of Chatham.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one brother, Harry Lee Shelton.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Watson Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Wickham and Rev. Walker Pettyjohn officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park. The American Legion Post #325 will perform military rights.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to the Watson Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, Chatham Rescue Squad, or a charity of choice.

Queen Clark Smith

CHATHAM, Va. - Queen Clark Smith of 273 Little Cherrystone Lane, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at her residence.

Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wade and Mattie Stone.

She was a member of Belgrove Primitive Baptist Church where she served as mother of the church. She was retired from Lorillard Tobacco Company.

Survivors include one son, Melvin Clark of Temple Hill, Md.; two daughters, Jane Williams of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. and Elaine Clark Robinson of Randallstown, Md.; two sisters, Hallie Van Romondt of Rice and Lula Lyles of Asbury-Park, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home with Elder Beauford Craighead officiating. Interment will be in Belgrove Church Cemetery.

The family is at the residence.

Nancy Bradner Trotter

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Mrs. Nancy Bradner Trotter, 63, of 407 Emerywood Drive, died August 6, 2002.

Mrs. Trotter was born June 13, 1939, to Hansford and Elizabeth Gilbert Bradner of Danville, Virginia. Her parents and her sister, Anne Bradner Gammon, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Trotter attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was employed by The High Point Enterprise where she was publisher of Market Press.

Mrs. Trotter was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Junior League of High Point, Emerywood Country Club and the String and Splinter Club. She had served on the boards of The Furniture Discovery Center and The Furniture Library.

Mrs. Trotter is survived by her husband, Wesley A. Trotter Jr. of the residence; a daughter, Elaine Trotter Foley and husband, Richard D. Foley of Richmond, Virginia; a son, Wesley A. Trotter III and wife, Colbert Lashley Trotter of Greensboro; and four grandchildren, Richard D. Foley Jr., Susanna C. Trotter, Logan A. Trotter and Garrison W. Trotter.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church by Reverend Beverly E. Gaska. Interment will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Acie Edgar Walker

CHATHAM, Va. - Acie Edgar Walker, age 73, of 1072 Chalk Level Rd., Chatham, Virginia, died August 7, 2002, at the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Walker was born August 27, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the son of the late Sam Walker and Mamie Harris Walker.

He is survived by his wife Kate Hastings Walker of the residence; son, Edward Allen Walker of Chatham; daughter, Suzanne W. Reynolds and her husband Henry of Callands; sisters, Ruth W. Girardin, Vivian Walker, Audrey W. Bliss, and Jean W. Moser, all of Danville; brother, Warren Walker of Ringgold; grandson, Jeromy Keith Snead; step-granddaughters, Heather and Megan Reynolds; special sister, Sharon Cook; special friend, Laura Rene; several nieces and nephews and close friends.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Carlton W. Droog, Cluster W. Mayhew, Mary W. Harris; brothers, Aubrey, Jimmy, and Joe Walker.

Mr. Walker was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He owned and operated Walker Electric Repair in Chatham for a number of years. He was an avid outdoorsman. He served our country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict aboard the USS Palau and the USS Lake Champlain. As a veteran, he continued to show his patriotism by serving as former Post Commander with the VFW Post 5309. Mr. Walker volunteered his time to the community by working as Cub Scout Master; one of the original founders of the Chatham Little League Baseball; charter member of the Chatham Rescue Squad; active member of the Carter Masonic Lodge AF and AM #323; a forty-four year member of the Cumberland Hunt Club.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 9, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. from the Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. James Bullock. Interment will be in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic rights. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 325 at the graveside.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Mill Creek Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence.

The family has requested that contributions may be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad, Chatham Volunteer Fire Department or the Mill Creek Baptist Church.

Carl Russell Beggarly

CHATHAM, Va. - Carl Russell Beggarly, 67, of 1520 Jones Mill Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at the residence after six months of declining health.

Born Dec. 3, 1934, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Russell V. Beggarly and Annie Burnette Beggarly.

He was born on Blair Loop Road where he lived for a number of years. He lived in the Dry Fork community for 3 years. He attended Brosville High School, was a member of the National Guard and Fairview United Methodist Church and worked for Dan River Mills in the no. 5 Mill.

He is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Beggarly Pruitt of the residence and Dawn Beggarly Carter of Spring Garden; a son, Carl Rusty Beggarly II of Dry Fork; a brother, H. Van Beggarly of Tallahassee, Fla; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Loveleane Wilson Beggarly, who died in October 1999.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Steve Smith and the Rev. Norman Chattin officiating. Interment will be in Dan View Cemetery, Eden, N.C.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Hattie Saunders, 1702 Blair Loop Road.

Haywood Bennett Collins

DANVILLE, Va. - Haywood Bennett Collins, age 79, of 6089 Kenridge Circle, Danville, passed away Sept. 8, 2002, at the Riverside Health Care Center, Danville.

Mr. Collins was born July 8, 1923, in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of the late Wade Collins and Octava Shelton Collins. He was also predeceased by his wife, Peggy Moore Collins.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelia C. Wood and her husband, Steve of Danville; one sister, Lucille C. Dalton of Gretna; three brothers, Elton Collins of Martinsville, Allie Collins of Gretna and Wayne Collins of Chatham.

He was a member of Payneton United Methodist Church.

Mr. Collins was predeceased by one sister, Agnes Collins; and one brother, Rudolph Collins.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham.

The family will receive friends Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.

Gayle S. Crumpton

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Gayle S. Crumpton, 62, of 239 Foster Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at the residence following several months of declining health.

Born Sept. 21, 1939, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of Fred and Mary Sue Hicks Stuck.

She graduated from Bartlett-Yancey High School and attended UNC-G. She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and was the Director of the Board of Elections of Caswell County. She was also involved in the Relay for Life cancer program.

She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Crumpton of the residence; a daughter, Rhonda Crumpton of Greensboro; a son, Ross Crumpton of Yanceyville; and a sister, Camilla Law of Raleigh.

The funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bryon Faggart and Jerel Law officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Donna Hodges, 7776 U.S. Highway 158 West, Yanceyville, NC 27379.

Charles Edward 'High Pockets' Guill

DANVILLE, Va. - Charles Edward "High Pockets" Guill, 62, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a number of years of declining health.

Born April 18, 1940, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Nathan Guill and Catherine Durham Guill.

He was employed at Commodore Mobile Homes for a number of years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by a sister, Kitty G. Brown of Danville; and three brothers, Melvin E. Guill, Robert M. Guill and Earl W. Guill, all of Danville.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Guill Family Cemetery, Blairs, with the Rev. Frederick J. Vicks officiating. Interment will follow.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home and will at other times at the residence of Earl W. Guill, 196 Northwest Boulevard.
