Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Faith Via

RIDGEWAY - Faith Elizabeth Wilson Via, 86, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsiville and Henry County.

Born Dec. 18, 1911, in Mayoday, N.C., she was a daughter of Benjamin Wilson and Lillie Banks Matlock Wilson.

She attended James Madison University, formerly James Madison Teacher's College, and was a school teacher in her early years. Later, she became an international tour guide.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Martinsville, where she had been a Sunday school teacher.

She was predeceased by her husband, E. King Via; a brother, Woodrow Wilson; and a sister, Lottie Stultz.

Survivors include two sons, R. Banks Via of Waynesboro and Edwin Via of Richmond; two sisters, Ruth Crawley of Danville and Mary Alice Best of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 4, 1998, at First Baptist Church of Martinsville by Dr. Thomas McCann and the Rev. Nancy S. McDaniel. Interment icon was in Roselawn Burial Park.

McKee-Stone Funeral Services, Martinsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Walton

RINGGOLD - Bobby Dean Walton, 57, 8260 Kentuck Road, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at his residence after a year of declining health.

Born Dec. 26, 1940, in Canada, he was the biological son of Herbert Snead and Elizabeth Walton Snead and the adopted son of the late Frank Walton and Sallie Slayton Walton.

On Oct. 10, 1971, he was married to Willie Mae Ballew Walton, who survives.

He had lived most of his life on the Meadow View Farm on Kentuck Road and was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church.

He was also very active in local organizations.

He was a farmer prior to his illness.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Thomas Dean Walton of Ringgold; his twin sister, Barbara Jean Alfarro of Cincinnati; a stepsister, Kathryn W. Hall of Danville; and his stepmother, Bessie Snead of Danville.

He was also predeceased by his stepmother, Louise Walton; and his stepsister, Erma W. Hellman.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday in Laurel Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Sutherlin by the Rev. Carl E. Burger and the Rev. Mark Blair.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times at the residence.

John Wells

John Easter Wells, 88, 57 Glen Oak Drive, died early Thursday morning, June 4, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for a number of years.

Born March 27, 1910, in Axton, he was a son of Johnny J. Wells and Ada Roach Wells.

He was married to Ollie Mae Wells, who survives.

He had spent most of his life in the Danville area, where he retired in 1972 from Dan River Inc.

He was a member of Schoolfield Pentecostal Holiness Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a sister, Lizzie Pyron of Danville; and a brother, J.T. Wells of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ray Humphries and the Rev. Roger Collins. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Mary Cross

Mary Carter Wilson Cross, 71, of 6941 U.S. 29 Highway, Blairs, died Saturday morning, June 6, 1998, in the Danville Regional Medical Center, after a decline in health for 10 years. She had been in and out of the hospital several times.

Born March 8, 1927, in Trussell, Ala., she was a daughter of Ester Vaughan Cater and Dock Andrew Carter.

She lived a number of years in the West Fork community and had been living in Blairs for the past 20 years. She was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle.

She was married to Clyde Cross, who died Sept. 26, 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Allen of Blairs and Delores Wilson of Danville; five sons, Roy Wilson Jr. of Dry Fork, Bobby Eugene Wilson of the residence, and Herman S. Wilson, William Edward Wilson and Danny Ray Wilson, all of Blairs; two sisters, Darlene Ayers of Danville and Jessie Mae Brooks of Beckley, W.Va.; four brothers, Clyde Carter and Henry Carter, both of Danville, Fred Carter of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Johnny Carter of Mobile, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley.

The family will be at the residence in Blairs.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Dills

Geneva Brook Dills, 80, of 222 Courtland St., died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health for two months.

Born April 19, 1918, in Roanoke, she was the daughter of Richard Bain Gibbs and Anna Brook Pinion Gibbs.

She had lived in Danville before moving to Graham, N.C., to live for several years before returning to Danville in 1992. She was a former member of Nall Memorial Baptist Church in Graham, and she was a present member of Westover Baptist Church.

She was first married to Minis Austin Newman, who died on Sept. 12, 1952. She was later married to Rufus Moses Dills, who died March 6, 1989.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Newman Anderson of Ringgold; one sister, Louise C. Gibbs of Bedford; and one grandson.

A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Interment icon will follow in Highland Burial Park.

The family will be at the residence of her daughter, 1048 Little Creek Road, State Road 732.

Butch Goins

UNICOI, Tenn. - Thomas Wesley "Butch" Goins, 52, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Ephrata Community Hospital in Ephrata, Penn.

Born Feb. 24, 1952, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas Wesley Goins Sr. and Lizzie Alene Kirk Goins.

He had lived most of his life in the Danville area before moving to Unicoi to live for the past five years. He was a long-distance truck driver for MLG Trucking Co. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father of Pelham, N.C., survivors include two daughters, Helen G. Purifoy of New Bern, N.C., and Charmin M. Whitehead of Gray, Tenn.; two sons, Robin Goins of Unicoi and Thomas Levine of Richmond; a brother, Richard H. Goins of Sutherland; two sisters, Malinda Catherine Hansen of Spotsylvania County, Va., and Teresa Margaret Grant of Chesterfield County, Va.; two half-sisters, Lily Marie Williams of Hopewell and Robin Denise White of Chesterfield County; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by Dr. John C. Gentry.

The family will be at the residence of his father, Thomas Wesley Goins Sr., 158 Goodmans Road, Pelham.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Helms

A funeral for Virginia D. Helms, 79, 841 Mount Herman Circle, will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by Elders Ramond Goad and Marvin Brumfield. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

She died Monday, June 1, 1998, at her residence.

Born Sept. 30, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Charlie M. Dalton and Myrtle Vasser Dalton.

On June 25, 1946, she was married to Paris Julian Helms, who died Dec. 6, 1997.

She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

She was retired from Dan River, Inc., where she worked for 35 years in #1 weave.

Survivors include two sisters, Hilda Keatts of Gretna and Ada Smith of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; and a brother, Aubrey Dalton of Indian Head, Md.

The family will be at the residence.

Theodore Howerton

Theodore "Teddy" Howerton, 64, of Montress, died Monday, June 1, 1998, as a result of a boat accident.

Born Jan. 20, 1934, in Halifax County, he was the son of Capitola Howerton and Melvin Edmonds.

Survivors include his wife, Loraine M. Howerton of Montress, two daughters, Kimberely Howerton Carson of Montress, Renee Howerton of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Harry Howerton and Gene Howerton both of Washington, D.C.; one step-son, Timothy Gray of Montress; one sister, Shirley Moore of Danville, and seven grandchildren.

Th funeral will be held Tuesday at Morning Star Baptist Church, Montress, by the Rev. Charles V. Payton.

The family will be at the residence of his aunt, Alice Howerton, 114 Princess Drive, and his sister, Shirley Moore, at 149

Tee Murphy

A funeral for Daniel D. "Tee" Murphy, 82, 2344 Riverside Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Clyde Earles. Entombment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

He died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 7, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Pettigrew Murphy and Annie Talley Murphy.

He was married to Jettie Hardy Murphy, who predeceased him.

He was of the Baptist faith and was self-employed in real estate.

Survivors include a daughter, Victoria Lynne Murphy of Danville; four sisters, Lucille Murphy Cassell, Mary Murphy Johnson, Helen Murphy Martin and Annie Murphy Wilson, all of Danville; and three brothers, Albert A. Murphy, John P. Murphy Jr., and Robert J. Murphy, all of Danville.

He was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Anne Murphy Dooley.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, 399 Chatelaine Ave.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Buster Price

John "Buster" Oliver Price, 77, of 866 Holland Road, Pelham, N.C., died Friday, June 5, 1998, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Columbus Price and Lurendy Coles Price.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include three daughters, Frances Price-Brown of Pelham, Shirley J. Price of the home and Mable D. Price of Suitland, Md.; one brother, Edward Price of Danville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathan Scovens. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Mattie Reece

A funeral for Mattie Green Reece, 89, 4469 Whitmell School Road, formerly of 2003 South Boston Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Roger Ewing and the Rev. David Wilson. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

She died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at her residence after three years of declining health.

Born May 6, 1909, in Stony Fork, N.C., she was a daughter of Richard Lee Green and Zora Carlton Green.

On Oct. 8, 1922, she was married to John Washington Reece, who died April 23, 1955.

A life long resident of Pittsylvania County and the Danville area, she worked at Dan River, Inc. on 90 winder in the spin room, Riverside division, prior to her retirement.

She was a member of Full Gospel Fellowship Church.

She was the last survivor of her generation of her family.

Survivors include six daughters, Margie R. Guill and Hazel R. Gammon, both Dry Fork, and Nancy R. Richardson, Mildred R. Sullivan and Jean R. Niday, all of Danville, and Faye R. Griffith of Ringgold; 27 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Reece; and three sons, Junior Reece, James Reece and Lester Ray Reece.

The family will receive friends 4-5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
