Mildred E. Giggetts Michaels

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Mildred E. Giggetts Michaels died Oct. 18, 2002.

Born in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Rosa and Ferninand Giggetts.

She graduated from John M. Langston High School and received her nursing training from Morgan State College in Baltimore. She was a registered nurse and retired from the D.C. Government.

She is survived by her husband, Cleo A. Michaels; a daughter, Anita Michaels Williams; and two grandsons, all of Catonsville.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Mt. Olive Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Lt. Kevin and Anita Williams, 15 Dunbar Avenue.

William L. Mitchell Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - William L. Mitchell Sr., 66, of 433 Alpine Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at his residence.

Born June 14, 1936, in Danville, he was the son of Ray Vaughn Mitchell and Mary Mount Mitchell.

He was a graduate of Hargrave Military Academy and attended V.P.I. and Bluefield College. He served for six years in the Virginia National Guard. He was associated with Smith Seeds, Inc. for 40 years and at the time of his death was vice president and treasurer. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, the Danville Evening Lions Club and American Legion Post 325. He was a former member of the Chatham Jaycees, the Sertoma Club, served on the Boy Scout committee and was a former treasurer of Boy Scout Troop 368.

He married Jane Yeatts Mitchell on July 27, 1968.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Mary M. Adkins of Danville; two sons, William L. Mitchell Jr. of Cheboygan, Mich. and Robert B. Mitchell of Danville; and four grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Mitchell Hale.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson and the Rev. Dr. S. Felton Carter officiating. Interment will be in Chatham Burial Park, Chatham.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hermon Baptist Church and at other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Mount Hermon Baptist Church Building Fund, 4385 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540 or to the Danville Evening Lions Club, P.O. Box 1118, Danville, VA 24543.

Cornelia Thompson Pannell

GRETNA, Va. - Cornelia Thompson Pannell, 59, of 1042 Straightstone Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg.

Born Dec. 14, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Joseph Thompson Sr., who survives and Martha Ann Harvey Thompson, who predeceased her.

She was employed as a machine operator at Schrader Bridgeport in Altavista and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

She was first married to Lloyd Miller, who predeceased her and then to James Pannell, who survives.

In addition to her father and husband, she is survived by two daughters, Vernella Dickerson and Tiny Hubbard, both of Gretna; three sons, Lloyd Garry Miller, Michael Miller and Marvin Miller, all of Gretna; four sisters, Everlean Pannell, Betty Miller, Rosetta Thompson and Diane Thompson, all of Gretna; four brothers, Clifton Thompson, Joseph Thompson Jr., David Thompson and Larry Thompson, all of Gretna; six stepsons, Roy Farmer of Gretna, Franklin Pannell of Wilmington, Del., Woodrow Pannell of Gretna, Mack Pannell of Long Island, Rocky Pannell of Hurt and Rudolph Pannell of Madison Heights; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five great-great-grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

In addition to her mother and first husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Brenda Thompson; and a brother, Willie B. Thompson.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Burnett Clark officiating. Interment will be in the Dickerson Family Cemetery.

The family is at the residence of her father, Joseph Thompson Sr., 2261 Edmunds Road.

Perry Ray Bomar

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Perry Ray Bomar, 52, of 1575 Airport Road, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002 at his residence.

Born Feb. 28, 1950, in Halifax County, he was the son of Ernest T. Bomar and Virginia Cole Bomar.

He was a mechanic and a member of Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church. He was also an army veteran.

He is survived by a stepmother, Helen G. Bomar of South Boston, Va.; a daughter, Jennifer B. Townley of South Boston, Va.; a brother, Ernest T. Bomar Jr. of Annandale, Va.; two half brothers, Kelly P. Bomar of Roxboro and Dennis B. Bomar of South Boston, Va.; and a grandchild.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Pizzeck officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Jennifer Townley, 1102 Ash Ave.

Pete Christianson

DANVILLE, Va. - Nolan F. "Pete" Christianson departed this life on November 13, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer's.

He was born November 8, 1911 in Danville, Va., to Lottie Moxley Christianson and Harry Christianson.

He was married on March 26, 1941, to Margaret Stansbury Christianson, who survives of the home. Also surviving is one son-in-law, Jesse Lowe; three grandchildren, Margaret "Mim" Craig, Russell Lee Roach Jr. and Ronald W. Roach; five great-grandchildren, all live in the Pelham area of North Carolina; two sisters, Evelyn C. Holland of Henderson, N.C. and Pearl C. Fuller of Atlanta, Ga.

He was predeceased by one child, Marie Daniel Lowe; two brothers, Walter E. Christianson and Harry Christianson; three sisters, Mary C. Browder, Violet C. Alverson and Ruth C. Knowles.

He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. He was a W.W. II veteran having served in the 69th Infantry Division in Germany.

Mr. Christianson owned and operated "Pete Christianson Home Improvement Business."

A graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. Jonathan L. Bennett on Friday, November 15, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post #1097.

The family will receive friends at the Christianson home, 4232 Shady Grove Road, in the Pelham area.

Douglas Morton Dalton

DANVILLE, Va. - Douglas Morton Dalton, 77, of 241 Lady Astor Place, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002 at his residence.

Born Aug. 30, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Samuel Coleman Dalton and Virginia Beatrice McDaniel Dalton.

He lived all of his life in Danville. He was the co-owner of Hughes and Dalton Construction Company until his retirement in 1976. He was a 32 Shriner and a member of the Roman Eagle Masonic Lodge #122. He attended Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church in Axton, Va.

He married Louise Gregory Dalton on Dec. 23, 1962. She predeceased him on March 11, 1999.

He is survived by a daughter, Douglas Ann Dalton Kowitz and her husband, Howard Kowitz of Danville, Va.; a stepson, Alvin C. Long and his wife, Patricia Walker Long of Danville, Va. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Hannah Katelyn Kowitz of Danville, Va. and his dear friend Nancy Clardy of Axton, Va.

He is also survived by two sisters, Jewell Thompson of Glen Burnie, Md. and Peggy Schroeder of Baltimore, Md. He was predeceased by two sisters, Jane Rogers and Doris Gauldin.

The memorial service will be held Thursday morning, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. at Swicegood Chapel, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. and the Rev. Mark Wimmer. A private interment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the chapel; at other times at the residence of his daughter, Douglas Ann at 263 Oakwood Circle, Danville, Va.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Anderson Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Betty Clardy, 5209 Medical Center Road, Axton, VA 24054.

Betty Lucille Neal Dalton

DANVILLE, Va. - Betty Lucille Neal Dalton, 96, formerly of 1708 North Main St., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after two weeks of declining health. She had been at Roman Eagle for four and one half years.

Born Aug. 10, 1906, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah Neal and Nannie King Neal.

Mrs. Dalton lived her entire life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas. She was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker. She was the last surviving member of her immediate generation.

She married Reuben Alfonza Dalton in April 21, 1922. He predeceased her Feb. 5, 1983.

She is survived by a son, Ed Dalton and wife, Shirley Dalton of Blairs; six daughters, Anna D. Cook of Danville, Dorothy D. Newman and husband, Otto Newman of Danville, Barbara D. Shelton and husband, O.T. Shelton of Chatham, Marie D. Carter of Danville, Shirley D. Carter and husband, Ernest Carter of Danville and Rachel D. Dowdy and husband, A.S. Dowdy of Danville; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, B.D. Dalton; a daughter, Gladys C. Pugh; two sisters, Isabel Adkins and Vergie Pierce; and a brother, Marvin Neal.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. Jonathan Reed and the Rev. Avery Marshall officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the son's residence, 4852 U.S. Hwy. 29 North.

Edward Lincoln Duncan

DANVILLE, Va. - Edward Lincoln Duncan, 73, formerly of 503 Middle St., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 12, 1929, in Danville, he was the son of John Mason Duncan and Essie Adkins Duncan.

For the past 15 years, he had resided in Petersburg. When he lived in Danville, he was employed by Collins Brothers Produce as a truck driver. He was a member of Faith Holiness Church.

He is survived by two brothers, Henry Duncan of Keeling and Carroll Duncan of Federal Way, Wash.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. M.D. Adkins and the Rev. Bill Bates officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his aunt, Irene Tuck, 515 Middle St.

Slick Kingery

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - William Thomas (Slick) Kingery, 69, of 2252 Tennessee Drive, died Nov. 11, 2002, at his residence after several years of declining health.

Born Nov. 21, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas G. Kingery and Gay Kingery Long.

He had lived all of his life in Danville prior to moving to Chesapeake in Dec. of 1996. He had retired from the former Danville Memorial Hospital where he worked as a painter with 35 years of service. He was very active with the Bowling Leagues of Danville when he lived in the area.

He is survived by a daughter, Lisa K. Jones of Danville; a son, Michael Kingery of Danville; three sisters, Frances K. Lakey of Chesapeake, Ella Mae K. Parker of Fort Mill, S.C. and Glenna K. Burke of Danville; three grandchildren; and one step grandchild.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Hill officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times will be at the residence of his son, Michael Kingery, 522 Jeanette Drive, Danville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Blue Ridge of Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 5014, Roanoke, VA 24012.

Elmer Slate Marshall

RINGGOLD, Va. - Elmer Slate Marshall, 84, of 237 Owl Drive, died Nov. 11, 2002, at her residence after several years of declining health.

Born Sept. 10, 1918, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of John B. Slate and Frances Rickman Slate.

She had lived all of her life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County. She worked for Dan River, Inc. for a number of years in the No. 2 spinning room as a travel changer until her retirement due to health reasons. She was of the Baptist faith.

She married George Washington Marshall on Aug. 5, 1933. He predeceased her March 25, 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Raymond N. (Pete) Marshall of Martinsville and Jack H. Marshall of Danville; three daughters, Delores M. Doige of Ringgold, Peggy M. Oakes of Danville and Shirley M. Simering of Ringgold; a brother, Harden Slate of Ringgold; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth M. Nunn; two brothers, the Rev. Lynn J. Harris and Cleveland Slate; and two sisters, Joise Owens and Cann Owens.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. William Mizelle. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times will be at the residence, 237 Owl Drive, off Mountain Hill Road.

Charlie Dudley Shelton

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Charlie Dudley Shelton, 85, of 2240 E. Hyco Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born March 26, 1917, in Halifax County, he was the son of Louis I. Shelton and Anna Coates Shelton.

He was a retired saw mill operator. He attended First Baptist Church of Millstone.

He is survived by his wife, Inez Cheek Hogan Shelton of South Boston; three daughters, Brenda Throckmorton, Gloria Jones and Joyce Thomas, all of South Boston; three sons, Mike Shelton of Ringgold, Tim Shelton of Cluster Springs and Randy Shelton of Martinsville; a stepdaughter, Donna Settles of Woodruff, S.C.; two stepsons, Fred Hogan of Morrisville, Pa. and Stacy Hogan of Halifax; four sisters, Beatrice Wilborn of South Boston, Eunice Estes of South Boston, Stella White of Morganton, N.C. and Inez Kramer of Ellabell, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Watts and the Rev. Grant Dyer officiating. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Mary Wiles Sparks

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Wiles Sparks, 78, of 30 Elizabeth St., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health.

Born March 28, 1924, in Fries, she was the daughter of John Wiles and Cindy Wiles.

She lived most of her life in Fries and Danville. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Robert Lee Sparks, who survives.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four daughters, Margie Martin, Linda Crossett, Peggy Whitlow and Thelma Lepley, all of Danville; four sons, Tommy Sparks, James Sparks, Marvin Sparks and Bobby Sparks, all of Danville; two sisters, Lorine Compton of Indiana, Ill. and Wilma Jean Norman of State Road, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Shirley Sparks, four sisters and three brothers.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. Richards Markham officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
