Herbert Boaz

MARTINSVILLE - Herbert Allen Boaz Sr., 76, 811 Spruce St., died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

He was born in the Nettle Ridge Community of Patrick County, Sept. 13, 1921, to William Stephen Boaz and Minnie Frye Boaz.

He served in the Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of Broad Street Christian Church. He was the owner and operator of Broadview Texaco and Boaz Motor Company.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Lucille Ramsey Boaz of the home; a son, H. Allen Boaz Jr. of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandson, Jamison Martin Boaz of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Mollie) Johnson and Mrs. Hazel B. Harbour, both of Stuart; and one brother, Clayton Boaz, also of Stuart.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Services with Dr. James Dickerson officiating. Burial with Military Rites by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Lois Haley

AXTON - Lois Compton Haley, 63, 571 Maple Springs Drive, died early Monday morning, June 15, 1998, at her residence after a decline in health for 18 months. She had been in serious condition for six weeks.

Mrs. Haley was born in the Axton community of Pittsylvania County on Jan. 11, 1935, a daughter of the late Dock Compton and Hassie Clark Compton.

Mrs. Haley was married to Raymond D. Haley, who survives. They were married on Dec. 19, 1951.

Mrs. Haley made her home in Danville for 40 years before moving to Axton in 1991 where she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Degree of Pocahontas Wyanette Council No. 22, and Axton Baptist Church, where she was a member of the hospitality club of the church.

Survivors in addition to her husband of the residence include one son, Michael R. Haley of Axton; two sisters, Dora Mills of Danville and Ruby Murphy of Mountain Valley; and two grandchildren, Kenneth M. Haley of Danville and Krystal H. Davis of Axton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Chuck Haley and Dr. Calvin Raines.

Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence at Axton.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to: Axton Baptist Church Building Fund, 164 Mountain Valley Road, Axton, Va. 24054.

Luther Robertson

SANDY LEVEL - Luther Bennie Robertson, 79, 12120 Toshes Road, died Monday, June 15, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 14, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Robertson and Fannie Divers Robertson.

He was a retired carpenter and a member of Round Pond Baptist Church.

He is survived by one brother, Roy Robertson of Gretna.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Round Pond Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. A.A. Blanks.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother, Roy Robertson, 125 Franklin Blvd.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Simpson

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Mary Jane Guthrie Simpson, 69, died Sunday, June 14, 1998, at her home.

Born June 16, 1928, in Henderson, N.C., she was the daughter of Walter Lewis and Mary Katherine Poindexter Guthrie.

She was married Aug. 19, 1950, to Littleton W. Simpson, who survives.

She grew up in Rocky Mount, N.C., and graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1946. She graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.

She was the librarian and a teacher for more than 30 years at St. Anne's Belfield Lower School Library. On June 3, the Lower School Library was named The Mary Jane Simpson Library in her honor.

She was a member of the Katie Beville Circle, Welsey Memorial United Methodist Church and the Air Force Association.

Survivors include three sons, Littleton W. Simpson Jr. of Ruckersville, Walter L. Simpson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Thomas C. Simpson of Plano, Texas.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held the middle of July with the date to be announced later.

Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Smith

Mabel Harp Smith, 247 Gray St., died Monday morning at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for eight years.

She was born in Corbin, Ky., and was married to Charlie E. Smith Sr., who predeceased her.

She was retired from Dan River Inc. and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Charles Eugene Smith of the home; one brother, Norman Harp, of Corbin, Ky.; and one sister, Margaret Smith of Corbin, Ky.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. David Gray.

The family will be at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Strader

Patricia Setliff Strader, 57, of 149 Winstead Drive, died June 13, 1998, at Stratford Health Center. She had been in declining health for three months.

Born April 4, 1941, in Danville, she was the daughter of Gene Setliff and Nannie Dix Setliff.

She had spent all of her life in the Stokesland community. For 12 years, she worked for Dan River Inc., and then babysat for 15 years. She later worked for the Disston company for four years.

She was of the Baptist faith.

On Oct. 21, 1961, she married Bobby Lee Strader. He died April 23, 1984.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa S. Roberts of Pelham, N.C., and Donna S. Collins of Danville; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at the Swicegood Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Gilmer Setliff and the Rev. Robert Hackworth. Burial will be at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery in Rockingham County, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Emily Jones

Emily Price Jones, 74, of 153 Benefield Street, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at her residence. She had been in declining health for eight years.

Born October 12, 1923, in Danville, she was the daughter of Willie James and Viola Mann Price.

She was married to Malcolm Jones, who survives.

She lived her entire life in Danville. She retired from Healthtex, Inc. where she worked in the shipping department. She had worked as a sales clerk at L. Herman Department Store and at Thalhimer's Department Store.

She was a member of Grace Design United Methodist Church. She was a member of the church choir until her health failed. She was also a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was a member of Wyanette Council No. 22, Degree of Pocahontas and she served as Past Great Pocahontas of the State of Virginia.

Other survivors include one daughter, Sue Jones Chaney of South Boston; two sons, Jimmie Price Jones of Gum Springs, Va., and Tommy H. Jones of Blairs; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by Rev. Scott Holcomb McLean and Margaret Marshall at Grace Design United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Leemont cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 153 Benefield Street.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Mitchell, Jr.

LYNCHBURG - Henry Alfred Mitchell, Jr., 93, of 3539 Ridgecroft Dr., died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Born June 12, 1905, he was the son of Henry A. Mitchell Sr. and Annie Harris Mitchell.

He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Danville, where he served as a trustee, past treasurer and director of the Senior and Male Choirs. He was also a member of the Almagro Lodge #217.

Survivors include two sons, Henry A. Mitchell, III of Virginia Beach, and James H. Mitchell of Lynchburg; three daughters, Kathryn Drayton of Jamaica, N.Y., Violet O. Mitchell of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Louise E. Mitchell of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Cecil Bridgeforth. Interment icon will follow in Floral Hills Memory Garden.

Viewing will held at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home from 4-8 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Cecil Owen

Cecil Thomas Owen, 72, of 465 Wileman Road, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998 at his residence.

Born February 23, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Clarence Odell Owen and Annie Shelton Owen Chism. He was married to Anna Fisher Owen, who survives.

He was a retired employee of the former J.H. Cothran & Company, Inc., and was a member of the Lynch Station Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Cecil T. Owen, Jr. of Franklin, W.Va., Clarence S. Owen of Harding, Pa., and Terry L. Owen of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; one daughter, Patricia A. Owen of Lynch Station; one brother, James M. Chism of Lynchburg; one sister, Mildred O. Cothran of Altavista; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Altavista Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert Brubaker, with military honors provided by VFW Post 4165 and DAV Chapter 46.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Finch & Finch Funeral Home, Altavista, and at other times at the residence

H. LeRoy Partin

Hubert LeRoy Partin, 68, of Charlottesville, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at his residence.

Born December 6, 1929, in Danville, he was a son of the late Dinky Hubert and Lottie Allen Partin. Mr. Partin was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Jane Partin.

Mr. Partin served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He was employed by Sperry Marine for 28 years as an electronic technician. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the Air Force Retirement Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela D. Partin of Charlottesville, Va., and Donna L. Catalano and her husband, Steve, of Stanardsville; a sister-in-law, Mamie Harwell of Danville; his mother-in-law, Sarah Jane Carpenter; and Gorie Lee Carpenter of Culpeper.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 1290 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, Va., 22901.

Teague Funeral Service handled arrangements.

Mattie Robinson

Mattie Lois Robinson, 82, of Ridgeway, died Monday, June 15, 1998 at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

Born July 13, 1915, in Walnut Cove, N.C., she was the daughter of John Everett Campbell and Susan Jennie Shelton Campbell Gann.

She retired from Pannill's Knitting Company as floor-lady, and was a member of Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Thurman Elmer (Peck) Robinson of Ridgeway; one son, Thurman L. Robinson of Danville; one daughter, Linda Wade of Ridgeway; one sister, Polly Woolridge of Martinsville; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Gary Edwards and the Rev. David Taylor. Internment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Services from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight and other times at the residence.
