Millard Nibblett

CHATHAM - Millard Junior Nibblett, 75, of 109 Brown Road, died Friday Dec. 4, 1998, at his residence.

Born Sept. 17, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Millard Nibblett and Nora Hubbard Nibblett.

He was married to Elizabeth Carter Nibblett, who predeceased him.

He was a retired employee of Hooker Furniture Company, Martinsville, and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, Walter Lee Nibblett, Wade Junior Nibblett, Hayward Nibblett, Richard Layne Nibblett and Ricky Nibblett, all of Chatham; five daughters, Mary Wimbush, Edith Wimbush, Debra Nibblett, Bertha Nibblett and Barbara Daye, all of Chatham; three sisters, Alice Nibblett and Elsie Nibblett, both of Chatham, and Mary Prunty of Roanoke; one brother, Lawrence Nibblett of Chatham; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Derring officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dall Pannell

LONG ISLAND - Dall Pannell, 85, of 3150 Buffalo Road, died Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 1998 at his residence.

Born July 10, 1913, in Halifax County, the son of Dave Pannell and Betty Word Pannell.

He was married to Jennie Pannell, who survives.

He was predeceased by one son, Lloyd Pannell.

He was a retired self-employed farmer and school bus driver. He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church, where he served on the board of deacons and was a Sunday school teacher, trustee and member of the senior choir.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include five sons, William Pannell of Fort Washington, Md., Paul Pannell of Philadelphia, Pa., Carl Pannell of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Herbert Pannell and Ronnie Pannell, both of Long Island; four daughters, Bethann Thomas of Washington, D.C., Eleaser Burrell of Garner, N.C., Barbara Pannell and Gloria Pannell, both of Long Island; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Buffalo Baptist Church with the Rev. M.J. Palmer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Taylor

Frances Vernon Taylor, 74, of 115 Kenmore Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1924, in Person County, she was the daughter of David Thomas Vernon and Mary Sue Snipes Vernon.

She was married to Otha G. Taylor on April 4, 1942, who survives.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was employed with Dan River Inc. for 30 years until her retirement in 1986.

She was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and American Busness Women.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Arline Taylor Dawson of Burke; one sister, Bonnie Belle Pritchard of Portsmouth; and two grandsons.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Adolf Otersen and the Rev. Ralph McCormack officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

William Weatherford

William "Billy" Thomas Weatherford, 72, of 392 Buford Road, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at Duke Medical Center after a year of declining health.

Born June 5, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Harry Weatherford and Beulah Dix Weatherford.

On Sept. 17, 1947, he was married to Gerline Worley Weatherford, who survives.

He lived his entire life in the Bachelors Hall community where he farmed and prior to his retirement was president of Weatherford Construction Co. He was the past chief of the Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire Department and was of the primitive Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, David Weatherford of Bachelors Hall; one daughter, Cynthia W. Kiger of Rocky Mount, N.C.; one sister, Mildred W. Hanks of Danville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Larry Weatherford and Harold Weatherford.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Elder C.B. Davis, Elder Kenneth Key and Elder Raymond Goad officiating. Burial will be in the Dan River Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Milton Weissman

Dr. Milton Weissman died Friday, Dec. 5, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born in New York, N.Y., he was a son of Harry Weissman and Mollie Neidorff Weissman.

He was married to Thelma Bleich Weissman, who survives.

He was a retired podiatrist and had practiced in Danville for 40 years. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He attended Penn State for his undergraduate work and received his Podiatry Degree from Temple University.

He was president of the Cancer Society, the Lion's Club and B'nai B'rith. He was affiliated with Ohio Zion Synagogue in Martinsville.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Amy Weissman Rose of Raleigh, N.C. and Tracy Weissman Dunbar of Thousand Oaks, Calif; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Raleigh Hebrew cemetery.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Robert Booth

Robert Thomas Booth, 88, of 239 Haymore St., died Dec. 7, 1988, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after one month of declining health.

Born Aug. 2, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Robert Booth and Lou Fanny Hall Booth.

He was married May 20, 1933, to Annie Permella Meadows Booth, who died Nov. 26, 1995.

He lived his entire life in the Glenwood community. He was retired from Barkhouser Ford where he worked as an auto mechanic.

Survivors include one son, Carlton V. Booth of Danville; two sisters, Sallie B. Carter and Blanche B. Whitfield, both of Danville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Chapel, and at other times at the residence.

Dr. Henry Bourne

Dr. Henry Reid Bourne, 92, of 1111 Main St., Stratford House, died Saturday night, Dec. 5, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 7, 1906, in Wythe County, he was the son of William A. Bourne and Mary Watkins Bourne.

He was married to the former Virginia Holmes Davis on April 15, 1939, who died Oct. 28, 1987.

He attended undergraduate school at the University of Virginia from 1924 to 1926 and graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1930.

He did his surgical internship and residency in Baltimore from 1930-1934. His career in private practice of medicine in Danville spans from July 1934 until July 1987, except for military service during World War II when he served as an officer in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was commanding officer of the only U.S. Field Hospital in the Soviet Union from 1943 to 1944. His military service also included Fort Worth Texas, Iceland and western Germany, until he was honorably discharged in 1945.

He practiced part-time at the Mental Health Clinic in Danville from 1988 to 1996. His medical career spanned 66 years. He was a member of the American College of Surgery.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Henry R. Bourne Jr. of Mill Valley, Calif., Richard W. Bourne of Baltimore, and W. Randolph Bourne of St. Paul, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. A memorial reception and celebration will be held 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Evergreen Room at Stratford House.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Bridges

Mary Emma Moore Bridges, 84, of 2526 N. Main St., died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 20, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George C. Moore and Cassie White Moore.

She was married to John D. Adkins, who predeceased her, and later to Everett Bridges, who also predeceased her.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the American Business Womens Association. She was a member of Blairs Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, John D. Adkins, of Bernardsville, N.J., and his wife, Sylvia P. Adkins; one sister, Jessie Rada M. Easley of Chatham; three grandsons, Jay Adkins of Houston, Texas, Scott Adkins of Phoenix, Ariz., and his wife, Jamie Adkins, and Brett Adkins of Waco, Texas; two granddaughters, Emily Adkins and Abbie Adkins, both of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Kathryn Howenstine and Elinor M. Yeatts.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Burton

James F. Burton, 85, formerly of 217 Fagan St., died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at N.H.C. Healthcare, in Bristol.

Born Dec. 22, 1912, in Sutherlin, he was the son of Charles Earnest Burton and Anna Farmer Burton.

He was married to Esther Parrish Burton, who predeceased him.

He made his home in Bristol for the past three years. He was a member of First Methodist Temple. He worked as a sales clerk at Smith Seeds Inc. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army as a Tech 5. He was a member of Rison Street Senior Citizens and American Legion Post No. 325, also Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha B. Page of Bristol; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Methodist Temple with the Rev. Gary Briden officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors by American Legion Memorial Post 325 honor guard.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home.

Wayne Cooke

William Wayne Cooke, 60, of 614 Chatham Ave., died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, at his residence.

Born Oct. 11, 1938, in Danville, he was the son of James Gordan Cooke and Florence Devine Cooke.

He was married on May 9, 1964, to Barbara Dabbs Cooke, who survives.

He was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. He served 12 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a retired computer specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was also a Vietnam veteran from 1967-1968.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Melissa Martin of Danville; one brother, Durand Cooke of Danville; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, James Gordon Cooke Jr., and Richard Gilbert Cooke; one sister, Joan Ann Cooke.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Elder Danny Parker and the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Military honors will be held by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Effie Doss

GRETNA - Effie Doss, 87, of 1913 Blue Ridge Drive, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 24, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Lee Worley and Pattie Martin Worley.

She was married to Bruce Irvin Doss, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Gretna Christian Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include one son, Bobby B. Doss of Hurt; one daughter, Ella D. Pickrel of Gretna; one sister, Mary Riddle of Java; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also predeceased by one son, Irvin Lee Doss, and one daughter, Wynonia D. Preston.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Hunt III officiating. Burial will be in Worley family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and at other times at the residence.
