Virginia, U.S., Marriage Records, 1936-2014

Grace Moore

Grace Marilla Moore, 94, formerly of Longview Avenue, died Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 1998, at Piney Forest Health Care Center, where she resided for four years.

Born Jan. 15, 1904, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Walter Marilla and Florence Shelton Marilla.

She was predeceased by her husband, Flourney Moore, who died in 1966, and two sons, Guy Moore and Bouldin Moore.

She spent most of her life in the Westover community, where she was a homemaker and a member of Longview Friends Church.

Survivors include seven sons, Shelton Moore, William Ruben Moore, Douglas Moore, Keister Moore and Lawrence Phil Moore, all of Danville, and John Moore of Powell Tenn., and Kenneth Moore of Port Orange Fla.; four daughters, Anne Arbogast and Carolyn Megginson, both of Danville, and Serrelza Blalock of Pfafftown, N.C. and Jean Maggio of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 28 grandchildren; 40 greatgrandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Roy Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Carolyn Megginson, 452 Conifer Drive.

Lacie Mullis

Lacie Vickers Mullis, 79, of 604 Worsham St., died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at her residence, after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Taylorsville, N.C., she was the daughter of James R. Vickers and Della Honneycutt Vickers.

She was married to Robert B. Mullis, who predeceased her on May 11, 1969.

Mrs. Mullis lived most of her life in the Danville area, where she was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church. She was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Mullis is survived by two daughters, Vickie M. Berkley and Ruby M. Scruggs, both of Danville; five sons, Donald I. Mullis and James Lee Mullis, both of Danville, David Kent Mullis and Barry Lynn Mullis, both of Alton, and Michael Wayne Mullis of Nelson, British Columbia; two sisters, Jo James and Cindy James, both of Taylorsville, N.C.; 8

grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

She was predeceased by five sisters.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, with the Rev. Kendall Jenkins and the Rev. Richard Heffner officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Junius W. Pulley Jr.

COURTLAND - Junius Waverly Pulley Jr., 79, died Dec. 25, 1998.

A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was born March 20, 1919, in Courtland, a son of the late Junius Waverly and Mayab Owens Pulley.

He owned and operated The Waverly Shop on U.S. 58 between Courtland and Franklin for many years. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and fish, and in recent years bred and trained hunting dogs as a hobby.

Mr. Pulley was a member of Courtland Masonic Lodge No. 85 AF & AM and the Manry Hunt Club, where he was the treasurer for many years. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Shirley Walthall Pulley; two daughters, Pamela S. Katz and her husband, Dr. Jonas B. Katz and Janice P. Lester and her husband David B. Lester Sr., all of Richmond; two sons, J. Waverly Pulley III and his wife Patricia G. Pulley of Richmond and Glenn W. Pulley and his wife Pamela F. Pulley of Danville; two sisters Frances P. Moore and Anne P. Prince, both of Courtland; two brothers, F. Bert Pulley and C. Graham Pulley, both of Courtland, and ten grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Courtland Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas R. Speight officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 3-5 p.m. at Wright Funeral, Franklin, and suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Courtland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 439, Courtland, Va. 23837, or to a favorite charity.

Luke Reynolds

Luke Arnold Reynolds, 65, of 224 Belaire Drive, died Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 1998, at his residence.

He was born April 2, 1933, in Alleghany County.

He lived most of his life in Danville and was a graduate of the University of Georgia. He was retired from the City of Danville, where he was employed as a correctional officer.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Wilson Reynolds of the residence; his mother Carrie B. Ferrell of Danville; two daughters, Elisabeth R. Scearce of Danville, Rebekah J. Reynolds of Milton, N.C.; one son, Timothy Arnold Reynolds of Milton; one brother Glenwood Reynolds of Danville; one sister, Barbara R. Hunt of Danville; one half-brother, Reginald Ferrell of Danville; one stepbrother, Henry K. Ferrell Jr. of Danville; two stepsisters, Lois F. Richardson of Danville and Jeanette F. Rose of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe Beck officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

Lester Wells

Lester Wells, 62, of 608 Cardinal Place, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1936, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Bennie Hughs Wells and Anna Mae Gammon Wells.

He was married to Mary Ellen Bernard Wells, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Carolyn W. Pruitt of Danville, Rita W. Sulter of Deltona, Fla. and Marie W. Gladin of Pelham, N.C.; one son, Charlie Wells of Danville; two sisters, Linda Vernon of Rocky Mount and Roslyn Lavinder of Belmont, N.C.; three brothers, Coleman Wells of Martinsville, Herbert Wells of Darlington, S.C. and Richard Wells of Kenansville, N.C.; and ten grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Ridge cemetery with Minister Kenneth McFarling, Minister J.D. Hunt III and Minister Jack Oakes officiating.

The family will receive friends 12:30-2 p.m. Monday at the church.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Bagley

Raymond H. Bagley, 59, of 116 Blair Place, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 26, 1939, in Meherrin, he was the son of Paul and Louise Bagley.

He was married to Lillie Bagley, who survives.

He was a member of Greater Triumph Mission Baptist Church, where he was a member of the usher board.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Harlareo Bagley of Farmville; four daughters, Marissa Bagley, Shelia Bagley, both of Green Bay, Renee Bagley of Dellwyn and Renee Bartholemew of Baltimore; one stepdaughter, Karen Atkins of Durham, N.C.; four brothers, James Bagley of Detroit, Mich. and John Bagley, Roy Lee Bagley and McDonald Bagley, all of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Dorothy Bagley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. H.G. McGee Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Alfonso Bennett

CHATHAM - Alfonso Bennett, 65, of 1225 Mill Creek Road, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 26, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 26, 1933, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Bill Bennett and Ollie Coleman Bennett.

He was married to Ozella Bennett.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by APAC, and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of Cherrystone Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Minister Alfrieta Bennett of Danville, Kathryn Gayle Mathewson and Valencia Bennett Bailey, both of Stafford; five brothers, Ira "Jack" Bennett of Killeen, Texas, Allen Bennett, Ralph Bennett, Robert Bennett and Edward Bennett, all of Chatham; one sister, Kathryn Younger of Chatham; and two granddaughters.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cherrystone Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd O. Jones officiating.

Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4165 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter #46 of Altavista will be in the Miller Family cemetery, Dry Fork.

Miller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Lou Edwards

GRETNA - Annie Lou Hankins Edwards, 95, formerly of Mount Airy, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998 at Camelot Hall.

Born March 28, 1903, in Henry County, she was the daughter of William Robert Hankins and Minnie Roberta Jones Hankins.

She was married to Albert Edwards, who predeceased her.

She was also predeceased by one son, Jasper Edwards; one daughter, Briley Hedrick; five sisters, May Bud Griggs, Ethel Wyatt, Hank Hanna, Doris Pickeral and Velma Willie; and one brother, Isaac Hankins.

She was a member of St. John Episcopal Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include three daughters, Alberta Johnson of Danville, Virginia Ann Tucker of Long Island, and Jean Midkiff of Lynchburg; two brothers, Dan Hankins of Dry Fork and Owen Hankins of Gretna; two sisters, Lois Pickeral of Lynchburg and Rebecca Eanes of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Reverend James W. Mathieson officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends the residence of her daughter, Virginia Ann Tucker, 5104 Straightstone Road, Long Island.

James Hogan

VIRGILINIA - James Thomas Hogan, 86, of 1107 Hogan Road, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at The Woodview, South Boston.

Born Oct. 29, 1912, in Akin S.C., he was the son of John William Hogan and Laura Royster Hogan.

He was married to Irene Puckett Hogan, who survives.

He was a retired employee of Romeo Guest Construction. He was a long time member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church, having joined the church at the age of 14.

In addition to his wife of Virgilina, survivors include two daughters, Loretta H. Roberts of Bahama, N.C. and Anita H. Talley of Buffalo Junction; four sons, Thomas W. Hogan of Buffalo Junction, James B. Hogan and Lloyd Wayne Hogan, both of Clarksville, and Larry W. Hogan of Virgilina; one sister, Carrie H. Aycock of South Boston; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Aarons Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Cooke and the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Terry Hoye

Emmeline Terry Hoye, 70, of 2314 Franklin Turnpike, Apt. C-15, died Sunday morning, Dec. 27, 1998, at her residence.

Born May 3, 1928, in Smithfield, N.C., she was the daughter of Oliver Carson Cawley and Margaret Roberts Cawley.

She was married to Donald Clark Hoye, who predeceased her Dec. 7, 1983.

She worked a number of years for Dan River Inc., in public relations, and then went to Washington, D.C. with congressmen W.C. "Dan" Daniels and, later, L.F. Payne as their legislative director, until she retired.

She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Coleman Hoye of Falls Church; two sons, Donald C. Hoye Jr. of Danville and Charles Comstock Hoye of Springfield; one sister, Margaret Christensen of Danville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Northen officiating.

Evelyn Hypes

BROSVILLE - Evelyn Scruggs Hypes, 71, formerly of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998.

She was married to Fred L. Hypes, who predeceased her.

Surviving are her daughter, Betty Hypes LaPrade of Brosville; a grandson, Robert Lynn LaPrade and his wife, Beth, of Roanoke; a granddaughter, Rhonda Davis and husband, Elmer, of Roanoke; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. today at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment icon will be in Sherwood Memorial Park.

Luke Reynolds

He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany as a military police officer.

He worked for the City of Danville as a police officer, and then as Deputy City Sargent for Judge Aiken in the General District Court. He later worked as a physical education teacher at Mount Hermon Elementary School and Southside Elementary School. At his retirement, he was employed as a correctional officer for the City of Danville.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Wilson Reynolds of the residence; his mother Carrie B. Ferrell of Danville; two daughters, Elisabeth R. Scearce of Danville, Rebekah J.
