Elizabeth C. Sydnor Landis

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth C. Sydnor Landis, 96, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 after several years of declining health.

Born March 13, 1906, in Danville, she was the daughter of Rochette Venable Raine and Clement Adkisson Sydnor of Lynchburg. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School and attended Lynchburg College and the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago. In Lynchburg, she was active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir and at many social functions, worked at both Lynchburg Department of Health and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In 1933, she was married to Arthur Clair Landis, who predeceased her. Prior to her illness, she was a homemaker, was active in community affairs and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C., her residence for many years.

She is survived by four children, Arthur C. Landis of Catawissa, Pa., Sydnor L. Dickenson of Danville, Richard R. Landis of Churchville and Suzanne Landis Sadler of Danville; three brothers, Lavelon Sydnor, Kendall Sydnor, both of Lynchburg and William Sydnor of Staunton; and one sister, Rochet Sydnor Blair of Charlottesville; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The graveside funeral will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to charities of choice.

Nancy Rowland Satterwhite Matherly

DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Rowland Satterwhite Matherly, 69, of 677 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 2A, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at 9:05 p.m.

Born June 9, 1933 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Claude Swanson Rowland and Mattie Barker Rowland, both deceased.

She was founder and operator of Danville Sitting Service for 28 years. She was manager of Royal Terrace Apts. and Danberry Apts. until her health failed. She was a former member of ABWA and a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries. She was a former member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

She first married George Satterwhite on Jan. 9, 1954, who predeceased her. She later married James Matherly on March 3, 1981, who also predeceased her.

She is survived by three daughters: Margaret L. Satterwhite and Donna S. Parker, both of Richmond, and Beth Laleman of Tennessee; and one son, Wayne Laleman of South Carolina; four sisters: Margie R. Petty and Ruth R. Williams, both of Danville, Evelyn R. Ferguson of Swartz Creek, Mich. and Faye R. Poteat of Providence, N.C.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Claude S. Rowland, Jr. and Millard C. Rowland.

A private service will be held at a later date. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home, Inc., 2025 N. Main St., Danville.

Anne Jamison Powell

DANVILLE, Va. - Anne Jamison Powell, 83, of 161 Canterbury Road, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Nov. 20, 1918, in Bryan, Texas, she was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. H.B. Jamison.

She was married on Aug. 27, 1941 to A.C. Powell, who survives.

She was educated in the Richmond City Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for a number of years at the hospital until retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and the Wednesday Club.

In addition to her husband of Danville, she is survived by a son, A. Carter Powell II of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Gayle C. Powell of Danville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Roberta Watson.

The funeral wil be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. James Mathieson officiating.

Myrtle M. Sampson

BOWIE, Md. - Myrtle M. Sampson of Bowie, Md., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002. The wife of William H. Sampson; she is also survived by six children, Catherine Sampson, Carol Colon, Linda Goette, Nancy Agee, Glen Sampson, and Timothy Sampson; one sister, Emma Gurule; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Relatives and friends may call at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 N.W. Crain Highway, (Route 3 S.) Bowie, Md., 20715 at 6 p.m. Tuesday until time of memorial service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to "Hospice of the Chesapeake," 8724 Spectrum Dr., Landover, Md 20785.

Lucille Stanley Strader

DANVILLE, Va. - Lucille Stanley Strader, 88, of 209 Ashlyn Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 30, 1914, in Danville, she was the daughter of William Stanley and Rosie Allen Stanley.

She lived her entire life in the Danville area, worked for Dan River, Inc. and also farmed.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was married to William Strader, who predeceased her in 1984.

She is survived by a son, Bobby G. Strader; two sisters, Pearl Garrett and Manerva Pruitt, all of Danville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

The graveside funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. Gilmer Setliff officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the son's residence, 804 Holland Road.

Martha Cosby Rucker Balmer

CHATHAM, Va. - Martha Cosby Rucker Balmer, 89, of 314 Spruce Hill, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 7, 1913 in Powhatan County, the daughter of James A. Cosby and Annie Sizer Cosby, both deceased.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Lt. Col. Benjamin A. Rucker, and her second husband, George Balmer. She was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church; attended Powhatan public schools and graduated from Averett University and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond in Virginia.

She was a school teacher for 31 years, having taught in Powhatan, Goochland, Arlington and Mecklenburg counties. She was involved in many activities; regent of the Mary Disha Chapter DAR, Washington, D.C., and president of the Governor Francis Wyatt Chapter of the Colonial Damer XVII Century of Arlington, Va. She was president of the Beta Phi Chapter of the Delta Kapa Ganna, honorary teacher's society and Worthy Matron of the Clarksville Chapter 145, Order of the Eastern Star. She taught Sunday school, was president of the Presbyterian Women's Group, and served as elder in Clarksville Presbyterian Church. She was a charter member of the Powhatan County Historical Society, where she held a life membership. After moving to Chatham in the early 1980s, she became active in the county community work.

In addition to her husbands, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Diggle; two brothers, Robert Cosby and Clifton Cosby; and one sister, Julia E. Cosby.

She is survived by two sons, Benjamin Ambrose Rucker, Jr. of Oxford, Ga. and James Cowles Rucker of Richmond; one daughter, Martha R. Diggle of Almond Beach, Fla.; one sister, Pauline C. Clements of Chatham; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at 11 a.m. from Chatham Presbyterian Church by Rev. Walker Pettyjohn. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Amelia Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 from 7-8 p.m. at Scott Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the residence, 314 Spruce Hill.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Chatham Presbyterian Church, Chatham Rescue Squad, or Hargrave Military Academy.

Annie 'Pooh' Williams Best

CASCADE, Va. - Annie 'Pooh' Williams Best, 58, of Ft. Washington, Md., died Sept. 9, 2002.

She was born in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of Walter Williams, deceased, and Almeda Adams Williams, March 27, 1944.

She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and a retired employee of International Inflight Service.

She is survived by two daughters, Kasandra Brockington and Danita Taylor, both of Ft. Washington, Md.; four grandchildren; mother, Almeda Williams of Cascade; 12 sisters, Leona Hairston, Shirley Ann Strange, Mary Wytch, Virginia Ingram and Donna Adams, all of Cascade, Nannie Bell Strange of Danville, Martha Wilson of Eden, N.C., Wanda Nowlin of High Point, N.C., Josephine Stockton and Pattie Giles of Martinsville, Rosetta Keen of Axton, Catherine Dillard of Vernon Hill; four brothers, Charles Williams of Cascade, Freddie Williams of Martinsville, Grover Williams and Joseph Williams, both of Rahway, N.J.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Cascade with interment in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Lewis Nolan Davis

GLADE HILL, Va. - Lewis Nolan Davis, 47, of 986 Ayers Road, died Wednesday Sept. 11, 2002, in Franklin Memorial Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Born Nov. 2, 1954, in Franklin County, he was the son of William Leonard Davis Sr., who predeceased him, and Geraldine Terry Davis, who survives.

He was a dedicated employee for 27 years with W.L.D. Logging and Chipping, Inc. and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

In addition to his mother of Glade Hill, he is survived by two brothers, Ronald Douglas Terry of Rocky Mount and William L. Davis Jr. of of Glade Hill; and five sisters, Laverne Musgrove, Doris Musgrove, both of Glade Hill, Joyce Sowell of Alexandria, Shelia Campbell of Penhook and Katrina Davis of Glade Hill.

The funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Rising Sun Baptist Church with the Rev. R.D. Wade officiating. Interment will be in the Davis Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at the church and at other times at the residence.

Ollie Swift Goodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Ollie Swift Goodson, 92, formerly of 807 Hughes St., died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Aug. 20, 1910, in Elkin, N.C., she was the daughter of James Sexton Swift and Emily Lawrence Swift.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She retired from Dan River Mills in 1972. She had been a patient in Roman Eagle Memorial since February. She was the last member of her generation.

She was married to Garland Goodson, who predeceased her on April 25, 1976.

She is survived by two nieces, Emily Dabbs Sheetz and Margie F. Terry; and a nephew, David Dabbs, all of Danville.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Schoolfield Cemetery with the Rev. James McGhee and the Rev. Steve Dalton officiating. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her niece, Emily Dabbs Sheetz, 1409 Orphanage Road.

Lena Blake Gunn

DANVILLE, Va. - Lena Blake Gunn, 82, of 612 Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2002 at her residence.

She was born May 30, 1920 in Lexington, N.C., a daughter of Randall H. Blake and Maude Deaton Blake, both deceased; and stepmother, Dorothy Dunn Blake, also deceased.

She was married to Andrew E. Gunn. She had been in declining health for three and one-half years.

She lived most of her life in Danville and was of the Baptist faith. She retired after 44 years of service with Dan River Mills as ticket clerk. She was a member of AARP and Dan River Retired Employees Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Ronnie Gunn Stanton of Danville and Patricia G. Rowland Young of Ringgold; a brother, Gloma Blake of Danville; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and step-mother, she was predeceased by two sisters, Jetty B. Matherly and Helen B. Snead.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Danville Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow the service.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Bernice McDowell Handy

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice McDowell Handy, 89, of 231 South Ridge St. Apt. 118, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Robert Jack McDowell and Gillie McCrickard McDowell.

She had lived in Danville since 1933 and worked in no. 4 Grey Inspection at Dan River Mills. She was a member of Afton Road Primitive Baptist Church and Dan River Retired Workers Club.

She was married to Frank Hardy, who predeceased her in 1979.

She is survived by a son, Frankie Handy of Mt. Airy, N.C.; two daughters, Jeanette Ricketts and JoAnn Herndon, both of Danville; a brother, Henry Herman McDowell; two sisters, Inez Blalock and Mozelle Campbell, both of Danville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Chapel with Elder Danny Parker officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday and at other times at the residence of JoAnn Herndon, 828 Corn Tassel Road, Tuscarora Farms.

Shelly Marie Jackson

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Shelly Marie Jackson, 24, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002.

Born in Halifax County, July 28, 1978, she was the daughter of Mary Jackson and Stanley Morton.

In addition to her mother of South Boston and father of Nathalie, she is survived by her daughter, Shaguandra Jackson of South Boston; two grandmothers, Catherine Dunkley of Nathalie and Mary Morton of Wilmington, Del.; one grandfather, Lindberg Hill of Nathalie; two sisters, Angela Jackson and Willy Guthrie, both of South Boston; two brothers, Carnell Jackson and Reginald Jackson, both of South Boston.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunflower Baptist Church, Nathalie, with Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 300 Summit Drive.

Louise Astin Merricks

DANVILLE, Va. - Louise Astin Merricks, 86, of 821 Astin Lane, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1915 in the Mount Cross Community of Pittsylvania County, Va., a daughter of John M. Astin and Mollie McKinney Astin.

On June 8, 1935 she married Moses L. Merricks, who survives. She lived most of her life in Pittsylvania County, and was a life-long member of the Sharon Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and Church Historian. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Louise Merricks. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel by Rev. Allen Holder. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m., and at other times will be at the residence.

The family requests that memorials may be sent to Sharon Baptist Church or to the Mount Cross Volunteer Fire Department.
