Lloyd Belt 'Chief' Franklin

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Lloyd Belt "Chief" Franklin, 79, of 1181 Huell Matthews Highway, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at the residence.

Born April 28, 1923, in Halifax County, he was the son of Archer Thomas Franklin and Ida Thaxton Franklin.

He was the retired owner and operator of Franklin's Garage. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the South Boston Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Woodman of the World and a veteran of the Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise Seaman Franklin of South Boston; one son, David Belt Franklin of South Boston; two daughters, Carolyn Franklin Hayes of Lynchburg and Deborah Franklin Ellington of South Boston; one brother, Charlie Franklin of South Boston; one sister, Augusta Franklin Dobson of Salisbury, N.C.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas Eugene Franklin, Benjamin Franklin and Archer Thomas Franklin Jr.; and one grandson, Robert Lloyd Ellington.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak Ridge Cemetery with the Rev. Don Bryant officiating.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Plantations, P.O. Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24528 or Southside Baptist Church, 2140 Alphonse Dairy Road, South Boston, VA 24592.

Nancy Jennings

DANVILLE, Va. - Nancy Christine Blankenship Jennings, 69, of 326 Autumn Lane, died suddenly August 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center after one day in the hospital.

Born April 20, 1933, in Danville, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Blankenship Sr. and the late Mary Bryant Blankenship.

Mrs. Jennings had lived all of her life in Danville and was educated in the Danville Public School System and Danville Community College. She received her Registered Hospital Central Service Technician training from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Mrs. Jennings had retired from the Danville Regional Medical Center after 31 years of service in the Central Processing Department, serving for many years in the capacity of Training Coordinator and Developer and Writer for all processing procedures. She was a member of the International Association of Hospital Central Service until her retirement.

Mrs. Jennings was a long time member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church prior to her becoming a member of Westover Baptist Church.

While at Third Avenue, she was a member of the Women's Fellowship, the Young at Heart Ministries and the Widows Club. She was also a member of the DRMC Retirees Club, VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society, Dorothea Henry Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the Henry Corbin Chapter of Colonial Dames XVII Century, the National and Virginia Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor and the Anna Eliza Johns Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She married to Henry Ramsey Jennings on June 1, 1951. He predeceased her on September 8, 1978.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia J. and D. Edward Raper; a son and daughter-in-law, Henry Steven and Lydia Jennings; one brother, William Blankenship and three grandchildren, Hank Raper, Christine Raper and Erica Jennings, all of Danville.

She was predeceased by her husband and by one brother, James T. Blankenship Jr.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2002, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Doug Barber officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon and other times at the residence, 326 Autumn Lane in Fox Hollow, off of Westover Drive in Danville.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Elizabeth Robertson Ligon

DANVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Robertson Ligon, 90, of 38 Laurel Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Stratford Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 16, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Elijah Robertson and Virgie Yeaman Robertson.

She married Willard H. Ligon on Dec. 22, 1932. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church and had worked for Danville Regional Medical Center as a nurse's aide.

She is survived by one son, Norwood Ligon of Danville; one daughter, Arlene Reynolds of Kure Beach, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Leroy Clack officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Everette Mace

CALLANDS, Va. - Everette Mace, 55, of 1257 Triangle School Road, died Aug. 24, 2002, at his residence.

Born March 11, 1947, in Marshall, N.C., he was the son of William Newt Mace and Ebbie Mace Rice.

He retired as the Burley Regional Director and was employed by the USDA for over 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Oakes Mace of the residence; four sons, Michael, Dean, Chris and Jesse Mace, all of N.C.; two daughters, Sharon M. Payne and Kim M. Coates, both of N.C.; three stepsons, Chris and Nathan Aaron, both of Callands and Jerry Dodd of N.C.; two brothers, Paul Mace of N.C. and Leonard Mace of Tenn.; five grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Davis officiating. Interment will be in the Reynolds Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Sidney McDarmont

DRY FORK, Va. - Sidney McDarmont, 96, of 2932 Sandy Creek Road, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at Riverside Health Care Center.

Born June 7, 1906, in Bolden Colliery, England, he was the son of Thomas Ropson McDarmont and Lily Roberts McDarmont.

He married Nanola Brooks McDarmont on Sept. 4, 1937. He worked for Consolidated Coal Company and was a member of United Mine Workers of Va. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 42 years, was a Scoutmaster for 35 years and was given a Silver Beaver's Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award for Scouting. He wrote classical music and played classical piano. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by three sons, Allen McDarmont of the residence, James McDarmont of Bristol and William "Bill" McDarmont of Danville; two daughters, Dorothy James of Norfolk and Lily Turner of Danville; two sisters, Nancy Fleischman of Follansbee, W.Va. and Ivy Rice of Fayettesville, W.Va.; one stepsister, Margaret Beverly of Premier, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, Arthur McDarmont; and one stepbrother, Neal Weatherford.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Ward Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to The Parkinson's Foundation.

Canyon Davis Lee Pritt

DANVILLE, Va. - Canyon Davis Lee Pritt, infant son of Terry D. Pritt and Joan Hacking Duffy, died on Aug. 22, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

In addition to his father of Waxhaw, N.C. and mother of Danville, he is survived by a brother, Ryan Duffy of Danville; two sisters, Brittney Duffy of Danville and Ashley Pritt of Waxhaw, N.C.; and maternal grandparents, Larry Hacking and Patricia Lundley, both of Danville.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Brian Gibson officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 12265 Martinsville Highway, Apt. 6.

Less Alton Hardy

KEELING, Va. - Less Alton Hardy, 86, of 3741 Keeling Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been declining in health for one year.

Born Oct. 31, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of V.W. Hardy and Betty Dodson Hardy.

He was married to Illah Mills Hardy on Oct. 7, 1944. He was a foreman with Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company for 25 years prior to retirement. He moved to the Keeling community in 1977 and was a former member of the Dan River Ruritan Club. He was also a veteran of the Army Air Corp and served in World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Barbara Hardy Coon and her husband, John Coon, of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Lorrena H. Adams of Keeling, Betty H. McLaughlin of Keeling and Audrey H. Walker of Ringgold; and two grandchildren, Brian Douglan Coon of Lewisville, Texas and Stephanie Lynn Coon of Boston, Mass.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by one brother, William D. Hardy.

The graveside funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Tom Erwin officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Otis Calvin Hardy

DANVILLE, Va. - Otis Calvin Hardy, 75, of 321 Grenadier Circle, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, at his residence.

Born January 2, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of John Thomas Hardy and Eva McDaniel Hardy, who are both deceased.

Mr. Hardy was married to Ila Horsley Hardy, who survives. Mr. Hardy lived in the Brosville community of Pittsylvania County for a number of years prior to moving to Westover Hills. He was a graduate of Brosville High School and was of the Baptist faith. He retired as a supervisor at Dan River Mills after 43 years of service. He had been in declining health for eight years.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sons, Dennis R. Hardy and wife, Cindy, of Danville, Otis "Butch" Hardy Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Danville; one daughter, Vickie Hardy Bailey and husband, John, of Lancaster, Pa.; one sister, Shirley Hardy McDaniel and husband, Lawrence, of Cascade; and seven grandchildren, Jaimie Hardy, Jason Hardy, Peyton Hardy, Courtlyn Hardy, Matt Bailey, Cameron Bailey, and Rachel Bailey.

The graveside funeral will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2002, at Danville Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. LeRoy Clack officiating. Interment will also be held at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Swicegood Funeral Home and will receive friends other times at the residence, 321 Grenadier Circle.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

William Alexander Heath

DANVILLE, Va. - "Little William" entered heaven quietly and peacefully on Saturday morning, August 3, 2002.

He had been ill since birth but his death was unexpected.

Born April 3, 2001, in Danville, he was the son of William Heath and Sherri Myers Heath.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Montie and Deborah Heath of Chatham; Bill and Betty Myers of Providence, N.C.; and aunt and uncle, Bobby and Monica Pleasant of Chatham.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, at the family cemetery on Irish Road with Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 4537 Irish Road, Chatham, VA.

Wesley Andrew Holbrook

SEMORA, N.C. - Wesley Andrew Holbrook, 55, of 15 Sunset Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at his home.

Born in Mecklenburg County, Va., he was the son of the late John Wesley and Sally N. Wilbourn Holbrook.

He was an employee of Stackhouse Tree Corporation.

Survivors include three brothers, Chester W. Holbrook of Semora, James Holbrook of Pelham, and Edward Lee "Pinkey" Holbrook of Gretna, Va.; and two sisters, Daisy Holbrook Koch of Semora and Sally H. Nelson of Milton.

The funeral will be held 5 p.m. Monday at the Brooks and White Chapel with Rev. Herman Chambers officiating.

Karen Turner Wells

DANVILLE, Va. - Karen Turner Wells departed this life Friday, August 2, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born May 29, 1950, and was the daughter of the late Fred Lee Turner Sr. and Katherine Meadors Turner.

Mrs. Wells attended Danville Public Schools and was a 1968 graduate of George Washington High School.

For the last 27 years, she was employed in The General District Court, serving as the Clerk for the last 11 years. Mrs. Wells was a member of The Danville Humane Society, The Atlantic Beach Shag Club, and The Danville Golf Club. Mrs. Wells attended First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 19 years, C. Philip Wells III of the residence. Her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lee Turner Jr. of Chatham. Her nieces, Lisa L. Turner of Agua Dolce, California and Staci T. Wall of Chatham, Laura Marchetto and nephew, Alberto Marchetti, both of New York, N.Y. Two great-nephews, Turner and Raines Wall of Chatham and one great-niece, Anne-Meadors Wall, also of Chatham.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. from The First Baptist Church by The Reverend Dr. Joey Faucette. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and the family will receive friends at the residence, 103 Acorn Lane.

Ira Barber

DRY FORK, Va. - Ira Melvin Barber Sr., 69, of 3116 Sandy Creek Road, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born June 4, 1933 in Lake Cross, he was the son of Turner Barber and Nelor Barber Black.

He was married Dec. 22, 1947 to Margaret Martin Barber, who survives. He lived in Danville prior to moving to Dry Fork in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired due to disability. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include two sons, Ira Melvin Barber Jr. and Ira Buford Barber, both of Dry Fork; three daughters, Delores B. Willis, Billie B. Carter and Kathy B. Sigmon, all of Dry Fork; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at the family cemetery on Flamingo Road with the Rev. W. Clay Knick officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Billie B. Carter, 229 Katie Hill Road, Dry Fork.

Clinton C. ‘Dick' Battermann

DANVILLE, Va. - Clinton C. "Dick" Battermann, age 78 of 114 Vine Circle in The Green Acres Community died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past seven weeks.

Mr. Battermann was born in Ringgold, Va., May 16, 1924, a son of the late Frederick C. A. Battermann and Hattie Keen Battermann.

He was a member of The Kentuck Baptist Church where he had served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Also, he was a member of the Civitan Club, Elk's and The Virginia-Carolina Field Trial Club. Mr. Battermann was a veteran of World War II serving in The United States Army and was a recipient of The Purple Heart while serving in The Battle of the Bulge Campaign. He was a graduate of Dan River High School. Before his retirement, Mr. Battermann owned and operated The Heat Service and Equipment Company. He was predeceased by one brother, W.A. "Bill" Batterman. Two sisters, Geraldine B. Swicegood and Emma B. Vick. He was married to Alise Davis Battermann on November 3, 1944 who survives of the home.

Besides his wife, Mr. Battermann is survived by one daughter, Joan B. VanOsten and her husband, Dale VanOsten, Jr. of Danville. Two granddaughters: Holly V. Powell and her husband, Billy Powell of Sutherlin, Va. and Amy V. Cummings and her husband, John Cummings of Boones Mill, Va. Also surviving are three brothers: Charles R. Battermann of Danville, Va., Brantley K. Batterman, Danville, and F. Mickel Battermann of Waxhaw, N.C. Two sisters: Betty B. Gibson, Danville and Peggy B. Williams of Danville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 7, 2002 at 3 p.m. from The Kentuck Baptist Church by The Reverend Bill Soyars and The Reverend A. C. Smith. Interment will follow in The Highland Burial Park. Military graveside honors will be conducted by The American Legion Memorial Post #325.

The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home, Saturday, July 6, 2002, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 114 Vine Circle in The Green Acres Community.
