Vera Hancock Cox

FISHERSVILLE, Va. - Vera Hancock Cox, 87, formerly of Martinsville, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 1, 2002) at the Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville, Va.

She was born on Feb. 4, 1915 in Fayerdale, Va., the daughter of Zachariah T. and Beulah (Shively) Hancock.

She retired from Pulaski Furniture in 1980 and worked at Rumley's Restaurant from 1981 until 1996. She was a Baptist by faith and a member of the Patrick Henry Allied Families of Virginia.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daniel Louis Cox on Aug. 6, 1966; two brothers, Jesse Hancock and James "Sonny" Hancock, two sisters, Verlie Atkinson, Lillian Hancock, and a nephew, Ronnie Merchant.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy L. Cox of Staunton; three sisters, Myrtle Graham, Jewell Merchant, and Claudie Hancock, all of Danville. Also surviving is a close nephew, Al Atkinson Jr. and his family of Martinsville; a nephew, Eddie Hancock of N.C.; four nieces, Pat Merchant, Sandra Roberts, Margaret Elliott, and Claudia Minter, all of Danville.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 3, 2002) in Roselawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial immediately following the service in Roselawn Burial Park. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the service in the chapel.

A special thank you is extended to the staff at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville, Va., who took loving care of Vera since 2000. They filled her last days with laughter, tender care and a garden in which to observe the beauty of nature.

Kenneth Alan Cranford

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Kenneth Alan Cranford, 50, of 1202 Sixth Street, died Sept. 30, 2002, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1952, in Halifax County, he was the son of Clifton F. Cranford and Margaret Scott Cranford.

He was married to Laura Wilkins Cranford.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, was organist and choir master for the First Presbyterian Church, news director of WHLF Radio and was on the South Boston city council. He was a musician, composer, writer, accompanist and conductor of the community choral. He was founder and leader of the Piedmont Community Band.

In addition to his wife of South Boston and parents of Virgilina, he is survived by a son, John Carrington Cranford of South Boston; a daughter, Margaret Anne-Carlisle Cranford of South Boston; and a sister, Janet L. Cranford of Youngsville, N.C.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Andrew Bawtree officiating. Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.

A memorial celebration will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Russell Lee officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kenneth Cranford Fund or the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church.

Raymond Mike Creasy

GRETNA, Va. - Raymond Mike Creasy, 52, of 637 Ray Mill Road, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Born Sept. 7, 1950, in Phenix City, Ala., he was the son of Raymond Creasy and Jackie Green Creasy of Altavista.

He was a self-employed contractor, a member of the George's Creek Hunting Club, a member of the Blue Ridge Harley Owner Group and a US Marine veteran.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Ellen Rowland Creasy of the residence; a son, Heath Creasy of Gretna; a sister, Kathy Burnette of Rustburg; and a brother, Kevin Creasy of Gretna.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Sheva Church of Christ by the Rev. R.G. Rowland, Fuller Motley and Larry Owen, Minister. Interment will follow in the Carl O. Moran Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 14, Gretna, VA 24557 or the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 615, Gretna, VA 24557.

Ollie Martin Elias

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Ollie Martin Elias, 89, formerly of Gretna, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in the W.C.A. Hospital.

Born Feb. 14, 1913, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of George Tom Martin and Roena Toller Martin.

She was first married to Thomas Robertson, then later to Julian E. Elias, both deceased.

She was employed as a caterer prior to retirement. She was a member of Blackwell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as a former member of the Trustee Aids. She was also a member of the Guys N' Dolls Social Club.

She is survived by seven sisters, Carrie Whitehead, Roena Adams, Willie Whitehead, Otelia Myers, Louise Ward, all of Gretna, Va., Lois Logan of Worchester, Mass. and Gracie Adams of Chester, Pa.; one brother, Russell Martin of Gretna, Va.; two stepsons, Robert J. Elias of Cleveland, Ohio and James Elias of Jamestown; and four step grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by two sisters, Alma Davis and Beatrice Martin; and three brothers, Dallas, James and Oscar Martin.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, Va., with the Rev. Isaac Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Gretna, Va.

The family is at the Martin residence, 4345 Piney Road, Gretna, Va.

Daniel Webster

Marshall Jr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Daniel Webster Marshall Jr., 71, of 177 Brockton Place, Danville, Va., died Sunday, September 29, 2002, in the University of Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va.

He was born on March 8, 1931, in Pittsylvania County, Va., a son of the late Daniel Webster Marshall and Cora Hamlett Marshall.

On June 11, 1951, he married the former Elizabeth Smith, who survives of the home.

Mr. Marshall was former President and Chief Executive Officer of Marshall Concrete Products. He was a member of the West Main Baptist Church, past-president of the Virginia Ready-Mix Concrete Association, former Board member of Virginia Associated General Contractors and a member of the Board of Trustees of Averett University.

He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in the 560th Field Artillery.

Mr. Marshall was a great person with a loving family. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by two sons, Danny Marshall and wife Kaye of Danville, and Steve Marshall and wife, Ginny of Blacksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Jessica Younginer and husband, Jeff of Blacksburg, Va., Danielle Hylton and husband, Mike of Roanoke, Va.; Aaron Marshall and wife, Elyse of Austin, Texas, and Jennifer Marshall of Blacksburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Marshall and Davis Younginer; a brother, Robert T. Marshall of Danville and sister, Marion Marshall Clark of Danville. Also an exchange student from Brazil, Claiton Pires and wife, Arlete and their children, Dennis and Dayse.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. from the West Main Baptist Church by the Reverend Bruce Wilson and the Reverend Glen Gentry. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park with full Military Honors by the American Legion Post 1097.

The family received friends at Townes Funeral Home, Danville, Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be given to the Jennifer Fund, P.O. Box 800773, Charlottesville, Va. 22908.

Mia Shanice Lynette Saunders

CHATHAM, Va. - Mia Shanice Lynette Saunders, infant daughter of John Wayne and Bernetha Saunders, died Sunday afternoon at the residence.

She was born Oct. 6, 1999 in Danville, Va.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Ashley J. Saunders of the residence; grandparents, Dorothy and Joseph Wright of Tappahannock; and a great-grandmother, Katherine Saunders of Chatham.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Jimmie Wright Sr. and Cornelia Wright, a paternal grandfather, Wade Lee Stones and a paternal great-grandfather, Robert (Dole) Saunders.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Triumph Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Ferebee officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.

The family is at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Greater Triumph Mia Saunders Scholarship Fund.

Margaret Y. Upchurch

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Margaret Y. Upchurch of Yanceyville, N.C. died Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at Person Memorial Hospital, Roxboro, N.C. at 91 years of age.

Margaret died peacefully with her three daughters, Margaret Brooks, Norma Davis and Myra Davis at her side.

Margaret was the daughter of Charles and Berta Worsham Yarbrough and was preceded in death also by her husband, Norman S. Upchurch.

Margaret was a homemaker and long time member of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville.

She is survived by her three daughters, her sons-in-laws, Jim Davis and Charles Deane. Four grandsons, Bennett, Winston, Matthew and Jason Deane; 2 grand-daughters-in-law, Heather Deane and Amy Deane and Jason's fiancee, Courtney Allen. Great grandchildren, Christian, Chase, Cole and Madison Deane. Her sister, Mabel Y. Smith and niece, Ann of Bervard, N.C. also survive.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 4, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Yanceyville, with the Rev. David Powell and Rev. Claude Harrelson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 437 N.C. Hwy. 62 North, Yanceyville, N.C.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials me made to the Humane Society of Northern Piedmont (Caswell County), P.O. Box 193, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379 or the church of your choice.

Thomas Britton White

DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Britton White, 87, of 131 Rosedale Court, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at his residence.

Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Chatham, he was the son of William Edward White and Henrietta Rosabell Eanes White.

He was married to Virginia Mundy White, who predeceased him on March 24, 1998.

He had been a resident of Danville since 1946 and was retired from Motor Parts and Equipment. He was a World War II veteran and served in the 5th Airforce in the Pacific Theater. He was a charter member of Rivermont Baptist Church.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The graveside funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Jack Waddell officiating. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

Ray Campbell

PELHAM, N.C. - James "Ray" Campbell, 70, of 2560 Law Road, died Sunday, October 6, 2002, at his residence.

Born June 21, 1932, in Madison Heights, Va., he was the son of William Edward Campbell and Bessie Mae Pence Campbell.

Mr. Campbell lived most of his life in Madison Heights before moving to Danville in 1980. He was retired from Westover Cartage where he worked in maintenance. He was a faithful member of Stokesland Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class.

He is survived by three sisters, Gladys C. Mayberry of Pelham, Dorothy C. Profitt of Madison Heights, Va. and Louise C. Womack of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother-in-law, Red Profitt of Madison Heights, Va.; two nephews, Jeff Mayberry and his wife, D'Atte and Jerry Mayberry and his wife, Mary, all of Danville, Va.; two nieces, Vicky Burnett and her husband, Phillip, both of Danville, Va. and Debra Shackelford and her husband, Tim, both of Pelham; four great-nieces, Sidney Shackelford, Savannah Mayberry, Brandi Burnett and Brittany Burnett, all of Danville, Va.; eight great-nephews, Phillip "Trey" Burnett, Jason Gammon, Joshua Gammon, Jonathan Mayberry, Jerry Mayberry Jr. and wife, Chrystal, Mike Mayberry, Scott Shackelford, all of Danville, Va. and Brian Shackelford of Raleigh. He is also survived by several other nieces and nephews in Madison Heights, Va.

He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at Stokesland Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Pittman officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 8 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Stokesland Baptist Church and at other times at the residence, 2560 Law Road.

Bernice Reynolds Harper

DANVILLE, Va. - Bernice Reynolds Harper, 85, formerly of 600 Main Street, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after residing there for three years. She had been in declining health for the past five years.

Born Jan. 25, 1917, in Danville, she was the daughter of Bernie C. Reynolds and Lula Hagood Reynolds.

She had lived in Danville prior to moving to Baltimore, Md., where she lived for a number of years before returning to Danville in 1970.

She was a member of the Salvation Army and was very active while she resided in Baltimore.

She was married to Edward F. Harper, who predeceased her Feb. 27, 1968.

She is survived by five nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Danville Memorial Gardens. Interment will follow.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her friend, Dora Walton, 87 Bishop Avenue.

Claudine Ridgeway Weatherford

HALIFAX, Va. - Claudine Ridgeway Weatherford, 79, of 1031 Weatherford Loop, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born May 2, 1923, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of John Ferris Ridgeway and Mattie Bomar Ridgeway.

She was married to John A. Weatherford Jr.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan E. Weatherford of Tulsa, Okla.; a son, John A. (Jack) Weatherford of Richmond; a brother, William T. (Billy) Ridgeway of Nathalie; three sisters, Catherine Ridgeway, Roberta R. Booker and Jean Ridgeway, all of Nathalie; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Gowen Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Funeral Home.
