Pearl Jones Scearce

DANVILLE, Va. - Pearl Jones Scearce, 80, of 156 Forestdale Drive, Apt. 108, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health since 1990.

Born April 13, 1922, in Danville, she was the daughter of Thomas Malcolm Jones and Essie Barker Jones Wilson.

She had lived her entire life in Danville. Prior to her retirement in 1982, she worked for Danville Regional Medical Center as a nurse's assistant and sitter. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret S. Gardner of Cascade, Brenda S. Trammell of Danville and Donna S. Giles of Cascade; a son, James S. Scearce of Danville; a sister, Berta Mae Butler of South Bend, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Sanford Ray "Pete" Scearce; and two sisters, Juanita Owen and Pansy Ann Burgess.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Handy Blackwell

DANVILLE, Va. - Handy Blackwell, 78, of 361 Maxine Road, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 17, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Thomas H. Blackwell Sr. and Carrie Flippen Blackwell.

He was married to Helen Blackwell, who predeceased him. He was employed at Dan River Mills Inc. for many years prior to his retirement and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include four daughters, Rosa Allen, Penelope Millner, Wanda Redd, and Tamye Blackwell, all of Danville; and a number of grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Demetrius Crews officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret Carter

EDEN, N.C. - Margaret Stultz Carter, 83, formerly of Eden, N.C. & Lynchburg, Va. died Friday, May 10, 2002 at Nansemond Pointe Rehab & Health Care Center, in Suffolk, Va. Graveside service will be on Wednesday the 15th, at 11 a.m. at Danview Cemetery in Eden, N.C.

Mrs. Carter was born in Draper, N.C. and a retired nurse for Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg Va. Mrs. Carter is a member of the Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Spencer Carter Jr. and wife Patricia of Norfolk, Va.; and grandsons, Michael Brent Carter of Portland, Oregon, and Jonathan Brian Carter of Pompano Beach, Florida.

Preceded in death by her husband John Spencer Carter Sr.

Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eden Rescue Squad, 106 Mabel St. Eden, N.C. 27288.

Elsie Harper

DANVILLE, Va. - Elsie Pollok Harper, 94, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born Oct. 10, 1907, in Whitmell, Va., she was a daughter of Ferdinand Lanier Pollok and Blanche Collins Pollok.

She wa married to Robert Edward Lee Harper, who died in 1966.

She attended Longwood College and she taught school in Pittsylvania County for several years.

She lived most of her life in the Pleasant Gap community where she was a homemaker. A long-time active member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, she taught the young girls' Sunday school class, and she was active in the Women's Missionary Union.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Robert Edward Harper and John Hutchings Harper; one sister, Sally Kate Pollok, and seven brothers, William Pollok, Irving Pollok, Ferd Pollok, George Pollok Sr, Collins Pollok, James Pollok and Robert Pollok.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Harper Cox, and a son-in-law, Carlton H. Cox of Danville; two brothers, Harold Pollok and Harry Pollok, both of Whitmell; three sisters, Virginia Clarke of Charlottesville, Va., Agnes Mitchell of Danville and Anne Hemming of Lexington, Va.; two grandchildren, Catherine Cox Decker, and her husband, Michael, of Ballston Spa, New York, and Harper Cox Morrow, and her husband, Bruff, of Houston, Texas; and one great-grandson, Carlton Andrew Decker of Ballston Spa, New York.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday from Mount Hermon Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Linda Cox, 233 Mowbray Arch.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Hermon Baptist Church's mission programs.

Ruby Stephens

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Ruby Hamlett Stephens, 94, of 10672 N.C. Highway 86 North, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the residence.

Born June 28, 1907, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of George Thomas Hamlett and Leanna Taylor Hamlett, both deceased.

She was married to Walter Thomas Stephens, deceased. Mrs. Stephens lived most of her life in Caswell County, North Carolina where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church, Providence, N.C. She was in the hospital for one week prior to her death at the residence.

Survivors include 4 nieces, Dolly Jackson, Alease Bowen, both of Roxboro, NC, and Dorothy Blalock from Apex, N.C., and Elsie H. Criner of Danville, VA; 2 nephews, Jimmy Hamlett of Providence, NC, and Thomas Lee Buck of Eden, NC; sister-in-law, Mamie Hamlett of Providence, NC; and a number of great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters and one brother.

The funeral will be held Sunday, May 12, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at Gatewood Spiritual Baptist Church, Providence, NC by the Rev. Johnny Gentry. Burial will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends Saturday, May 11, 2002, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

George Strange Jr.

CASCADE, Va. - George Eddie Strange Jr., 65, of 3563 Huntington Trail, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at the residence.

Born Oct. 4, 1936, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was the son of George Eddie Strange Sr. and Ruth Agnes Hairston Strange.

He was married to Adelaide Hairston Strange, who survives. He was employed for many years at Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C. and was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include four daughters, Patricia Poteat of Cascade, Jennifer Walden of Houston, Texas, Regenna Williams of Lithonia, Ga., Wanda Jackson of Decatur, Ga.; one son, Joel Strange of Decatur, Ga.; five sisters, Evelena Clark of Washington, D.C., Doris Strange of Suitland, Md., Edith Hairston of Landover, Md., Charlotte Wilkerson of Eden, N.C., and Ruth Brown of Reidsville, N.C.; two brothers, Irvin Strange and Frank Strange, both of Forestville, Md.; ten grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, James Strange and Jessie Strange.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. John W. Tinsley officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Sanford Taylor

DANVILLE, Va. - Thomas Sanford Taylor, of 346 Laurel Woods Drive, Danville, died Friday morning, May 10, 2002 at his residence.

He was born on April 13, 1926, in Danville the son of H.S. Taylor and Lena Powell Taylor.

He was married to Kittye Bradley Taylor, who survives of the home.

He graduated from Brosville High School. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy on the USS New York, seeing action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

He was a retired sales representative for Valley Dale Meat Packers, where he was their Man of the Year for several times. At the time of his death, he was associated with Danville Toyota. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post #325, a charter member of Tuscarora Golf Club. He was an amateur radio operator for over 50 years, his call sign K4WW1.

He was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by a son, Sandford "Sandy" McRae Taylor.

He is survived by his wife of the home, on sister, Frances Taylor Alverson of Danville, two brothers, William Bill Taylor of Danville, and Dewey Lee Taylor of Pinbrook Pines, Florida, two half sisters, Linda Taylor Jarosz and Betty Taylor Call, both of Danville, two nephews, Burton T. Sparks of Danville and R. Bradley Sparks of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 12, 2002 at 3:00 pm from Mount Herman Baptsit Church by the Rev. Don Davidson. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 346 Laurel Woods Drive.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc. 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24540 or to The Mount Hermon Fire and Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.

Annie Wood

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Annie Mae Hodges Wood, 58, of 122 Short Road, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center following a long period of declining health.

Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of William Rufus and Mae Walker Hodges.

She was married to Jesse Wayne Wood, who survives. She was a homemaker and graduated from Cobb Memorial High School. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Hamlet.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one daughter, Sherri W. Brandon of Blanch; one son, Darron Wayne Wood of Providence; one sister, Linda H. Green of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Winstead "Shorty" Hodges, and Glen Hodges, both of Ruffin, and Walker Hodges of Newland; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville with the Rev. Moult Beasley officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Harrelson Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, P.O. Box 975, Hamlet, N.C. 28345.

William Alderson

KEELING, Va. - William Joseph Alderson, Sr., 55, of 17601 Old Richmond Road, died Thursday, May 2, 2002 at 11:20 p.m. at the residence of his son, 3881 Yates Store Road in Java.

Born June 3, 1946 in Danville, he was the son of Linwood K. Alderson and Gracie Hardy Alderson, both deceased.

He had worked as a mechanic for the City of Danville.

Survivors include, one son, "Joey" Alderson of Java; one daughter-in-law, Shannon Alderson of Java; two brothers, Wayne Alderson of Danville and Gerald Alderson of Winston-Salem, NC; and three grandchildren, Krista Alderson, MacKenzie Alderson and Lindsey Alderson, all of Java.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2002 at County Line Baptist Church in Java, with the Rev. John Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, 2025 North Main Street, Danville, and at other times at 3881 Yeatts Store Road in Java.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the 640 Community Rescue Squad, Riceville Road, Java, VA 24565.

John Daniel

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - John Leigh Daniel, 40, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Fruit of the Loom.

Born in Danville, he was the son of Charles Leigh Daniel, of Martinsville, Va., and Alice W. Dunn, of Tampa, Fla., who survive.

He was married to Terry Smith Daniel, of Bowling Green, who survives. He was the director of contract business for Fruit of the Loom. He was a member of Hillvue Heights Church and Virginia Tech Alumni.

Survivors include one son, Charles Blake Daniel of Bowling Green; two daughters, Ashley Nicole Daniel and Victoria Bailey Daniel, both of Bowling Green; three sisters, Theresa Norton of Collinsville, Va. and Sherri Coleman and Susan Koger, both of Martinsville; and one half-brother, Steven Todd Ramsey of Roanoke, Va.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Leigh Ann Daniel.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel in Bowling Green and at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCabe Baptist Church in Martinsville, Va. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway, Va.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel.

The family suggests memorials be made to Children of John Leigh Daniel Memorial Fund, Firstar Bank, P.O. Box 90001, Cave Mill Branch, Bowling Green, Ky. 42102.

Randy Faison

RINGGOLD, Va. - Randall "Randy" Brian Faison, 36, of 3511 Rock Springs Road, died Friday, May 3, 2002 at his residence after a decline in health.

Born Oct. 23, 1965, in Williamsburg, he was a son of William "Bill" V. Faison Jr. and Kitty Norfleet Faison, who survive.

He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. He graduated from Halifax County High School in 1987 and had volunteered at God's Store House and Meals on Wheels. He had owned and operated the Snack and Chat store in Sutherlin.

Survivors, in addition to his parents of Ringgold, include one sister, Sherry F. Waid of Winston-Salem, N.C., and his paternal grandmother, Janie J. Faison of Newport News.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Duncan, the Rev. Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Howard Green officiating. A private interment will follow at the Kerns Memorial United Methodist Church cemetery in Sutherlin.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.

The family suggestes memorials be made to God's Store House, 778 Westover Drive, Danville, Va. 24540.

Coleman Maddox Sr.

DANVILLE, Va. - Coleman Barnard Maddox, Sr. 85 of Danville, Formerly of Charlottesville died May 3, 2002.

Born May 6, 1916 in Ohio County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Caperton C. and Maude E. Barnard Maddox.

He served in the Army 98th Evacuation Hospital and Medical Corps as 1st. Lieutenant; attended Western Kentucky University and received a Bachelor degree in Engineering from U.Va. A member of Widows Sons Lodge #60; past master of Charlottesville Lodge #55 AF & AM; US Coast Guard Aux.; Albermarle County Historical Society; a lifetime member of UVa Alumni; Boy Scout Committee member for University Baptist Church Troop #89; DeMolay advisor for Thomas Jefferson Chapter; 32nd Degree Mason, Member ACCA Temple, Richmond.

Survivors include his wife Martha Coulter Maddox; his sons, John Coulter Maddox of Poquoson, Va. and Coleman Barnard Maddox, Jr. of Danville, Va.; 2 Brothers, Mitchell P. Maddox of Bushnell, Florida and James D. Maddox of Frankford, Kentucky; 3 grandchildren, Andrew, Karen and Stephen.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 at Hill & Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Ramsey Richardson officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
