Leroy L. Smith

Leroy L. Smith, 83, of North Carolina, formerly of Manassas, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Madaline Givens Smith.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Taylor of Manassas and Charlotte Clemens of Rockport, Mass.; one son, Leroy L. Smith II of Ashburn; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where a funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Virginia Chapter, 10201 Lee Highway, Suite 210, Fairfax, VA 22030; of the National Parkinson's Foundation, 7531 Leesburg Pike, Suite 402, Falls Church, VA 22043.

John H. Evans

John H. Evans, formerly of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, after an eight-month struggle with cancer at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge. Born in San Antonio, he was the son of the late Joe and Mary Evans. He served in the U.S. Army for 23 years: he was a Vietnam War veteran and earned two Bronze Stars. He was employed by the federal government for 19 years until his death. He was a devoted member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria A. Evans of Dale City; two sons, John Evans Jr. of Sierra Vista and Max A. Evans of Wichita Falls, Texas; three brothers, Richard Evans and Alfred Evans, both of San Antonio, and Gilbert Evans of Houston; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, followed by a rosary service from 8 to 9 p.m. at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Memorial Cemetery in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 699, Vienna, VA 22180-0699.

Thomas A. Kolk

Thomas Anthony Kolk, 65, of Woodbridge, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge. He had been a resident of Prince William for over 33 years. He was a retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Aviation Historical Society of Northern Virginia and the International Plastic Modelers Society. He was preceded in death by his wife, Micheline Kolk. He is survived by his daughter, Edith "Edi" Vernon of Warrenton; one brother, Richard Kolk of Cleveland; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge, with a prayer service to begin at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Richard Carr officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 124 Park St., SE, P.O. Box 699, Vienna, VA 22180-0699, or to the American Diabetes Association, 2788 Hydraulic Road, Suite 4, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Gwyn Stecher

Gwyn Stecher, 76, of Woodbridge, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge. A resident of Woodbridge since 1964, she had retired from the U.S. government after 30 years of service to the Supreme Court and the Department of Defense. She is survived by her husband, Adolph Stecher, two sons, Fred Stecher and Craig Stecher, and three grandchildren, all of Woodbridge. Memorial services will be private. Arrangements are by Mountcastle Funeral Home, Woodbridge.

Reba S. McPherson

Reba S. McPherson, 86, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Lake Ridge Fellowship House. She had lived at Fellowship House for the past 17 years and was co-owner of Fox Run Antiques in Occoquan. Survivors include one daughter, Anna G. Barnes of Lake Anna; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lake Ridge Fellowship House, 12800 Harbor Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake Ridge Fellowship House, 12800 Harbor Drive, Lake Ridge VA 22192. Arrangements are by Mountcastle Funeral Home, Woodbridge.

Christine S. Potter

Christine Shumaker Potter, 73, of Christiansburg, formerly of Manassas, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center, Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob Franklin and Tessie Florence Shumaker; three brothers, Lloyd, Frank and Raymond; and four sisters, Mabel, Janet, Margaret and Pauline. She is survived by one son, Clifford C. Potter of Radford; one sister, Grace Allison of Salisbury, Md.; one brother, John S. Shumaker of Derwood, Md.; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West St., Manassas, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.

Marian G. Beury
Marian Garman Beury, 96, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Haymarket. Born in Millersburg, Pa., graduated from Millersburg High School and Central Pennsylvania Business School. She and her husband lived in western Pennsylvania from 1926 until 1989, when they moved to The Woods in Camphill, Pa. She was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church and the Blairville Chapter No. 166, Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, John M. Beury. She is survived by a son, John S. Beury of Sugarland, Texas; two daughters, Carol B. Rothman of Towson, Md., and Joan B. Harris of Haymarket; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pomfert Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, Pa., the Rev. Arthur Hubbon of Haymarket officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Fund. Arrangements are by Lee Funeral Home, Manassas.

Marvin J. Garrett
Marvin Jerrell Garrett, 63, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg. Survivors include his companion of 23 years, Wanda Caudle; four sons, Greg Garrett of Manassas, Marty Garrett of Haynesville, Michael Garrett of Fredericksburg and Patrick Garrett of Front Royal; one sister, Henrietta Ellison of Pineville, W.Va.; three brothers, Fred Garrett and Donald Garrett, both of Pineville, W.Va., and Gilmer Garrett of Dallas; and his ex-wife, Carol Johnson of Manassas. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday , the Rev. Joel Slemp officiating. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

William D. Waldron
William Durrie Waldron, 69, of Manassas, died of cancer on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at his home. Born in New York City, he graduated from Yale University and served as a pilot in the U.S Air Force. He moved to Manassas in 1963. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Prince William Health System and served on various governing boards of the organization from 1980 until his retirement in June. He also served on the boards of Prince William Hospital, Annaburg Manor and Caton Merchant House. He served on the Industrial Development Authority for the City of Manassas, the Board of Equalization and in 1973, as chairman of the building committee for All Saints Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by one son, William D. Waldron Jr. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy M. Waldron; one daughter, Virginia L. Schuette of Vienna; three sons, Douglas S. Waldron of Manassas, Matthew M. Waldron of Charlottesville and Robert D. Waldron of Morgantown, W.Va.; one sister, Joy Louise Rose of New York City; and nine grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. A funeral Mass will be offered at 1 p.m. Wednesday at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Stonington Borough Cemetery, Stonington, Conn. In lieu of lowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Children’s Fund, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294.

Velma G. Martin

Velma Gertrude Martin, 91, of Manassas, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Lawton, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John V. Martin.

Survivors include two children, Vee Deanya Goodgion of Manassas and Don E. Martin of Mesquite, Texas.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton. Becker Funeral Home in Lawton is in charge of arrangements in Oklahoma and can be reached at (800) 983-3303; Price Funeral Home of Manassas is in charge of local arrangements.

Viola M. McMurtrey

Viola Marguerite McMurtrey, 79, of Manassas, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home.

She was a member of the Manassas Church of the Nazarene. She was a member of the Manassas Park VFW Auxiliary. She retired from the Prince William County Health Department after 24 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Y. McMurtrey, who died in 1964.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce L. Evans of Centreville and Catherine A. McMurtrey of Alexandria; two sisters, Ruby Clapper of College Park, Md., and Maxine Coufal of Cotesfield, Neb.; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Manassas Church of the Nazarene, 8220 E. Spruce St., Manassas. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Northern Virginia, Prince William Clinical Office, 9540 Center St., Suite 300, Manassas, VA 20110.

Marsha L. Allen

Marsha Lucille (Roberts) Allen, 57, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at her home in Woodbridge.

She was born and raised in Indianapolis, and had resided in the Woodbridge area since 1980, with the exception of a three-year stay at Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.

She was a faithful follower of Christ and an active member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. She received her Bachelor of Arts in home economics at Butler University in Indianapolis and served in careers as a kindergarten teacher, Hanscom Air Force Base Chapel religious coordinator and, for the last 11 years, as a realtor with Long & Foster. Her favorite occupation was being a mother.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert M. Roberts, and her mother, Lucille I. Roberts.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, W. Michael Allen; three children, Josh Allen, Sarah Allen, Katie Hewlett; one sister, Diane Barkalow; two brothers, Dr. Albert E. Roberts and Allan Roberts; as well as countless friends and relatives.

Friends and family may call for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Attendees are encouraged to wear bright colors and bring a balloon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marsha L. Allen Women of Faith Fund, c/o Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 14999 Birchdale Ave., Dale City, VA 22193, or to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, www.nccra.org.

Eileen D. LaMothe

Eileen Diana LaMothe, 59, of Manassas died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Manassas. She was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order.

Survivors include one son, Michael J. LaMothe of Bristow; two daughters, Genelle D. Simpson of Ashburn and Annette M. Strasbaugh of Manassas; one brother, Edward J. Sever of Corning, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas, the Rev. Robert C. Cilinski officiating. Interment will be private.

Joseph G. Miles

Joseph Grant Miles, 55, of Spotsylvania, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, in Fredericksburg.

He was born on Feb. 21, 1946, in Manhattan, N.Y.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael Miles and Freda Weissbaum.

He was a certified public accountant for Piedmont Business Services, where he was owner and operator. He was the assistant vice president of the Virginia South Area of the National Capital Area Council. He was also the committee chairman of Spotsylvania Boy Scout Troop #1422, and a member of Spotsylvania American Legion Post #320.

He is survived by his wife, Kerry Miles of Spotsylvania; two sons, Anthony Miles of Spotsylvania and Grant Miles of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Carol Bleifer of Montville, N.J.; one brother, Alexander Miles of Dijon, France; two nephews; and his adopted family, Jeff Martin, Tracey Myers, Tim Jansen and Michael Cagnina.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Mullins and Thompson Spotsylvania Chapel, where services will follow at 3 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Legion for the Boy Scout Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 51, Spotsylvania, VA 22553, or to the Rappahannock United Way, in memory of Joseph Grant Miles.

William A. Brazzle

William Arthur Brazzle, 47, of Centreville, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Fairfax Hospital of leukemia.

He was an engineer at Lockheed Martin in Manassas. He was a United States Soccer Federation referee and coached his sons’ soccer teams in Fauquier County.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Brazzle of Alexandria; three children, Eric William Brazzle of Norfolk, and Kathryn Jenae Brazzle and Arthur Charles Brazzle, both of Warrenton; his parents, William and Ruth Brazzle of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; three brothers, Roy Brazzle, Jimmy Brazzle and Tracy Brazzle; and one sister, Janella Cruz.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Lee Funeral Home, 8521 Sudley Road, Manassas, where services will begin at noon with the Rev. Angus McDonald officiating. Interment will be private.

Jeanne Miller Knoblock

Jeanne Miller Knoblock, 76, of Manassas, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Prince William Hospital. Manassas.

She was born June 17, 1925, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of the late William Randolf and Dorothy Virginia Miller Dudley. She was a member of the Fairfax Woman’s Club and had retired from the Turnpike House of Furniture in Fairfax as an office assistant.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Frank Knoblock; twin girls, Terry-Ann Crenshaw of Derby, Vt., and Toni-Jean Walton of Houston; one son, Bruce Frank Knoblock of Suffolk; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, 3411 Arlington Blvd., Arlington .

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the charity of your choice in memory of Jeanne Miller Knoblock.

Arrangements are by Price funeral Home, Manassas.

James Edmond Leger

James Edmond Leger, 50, of Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home in Centreville.

He was preceded by his father, Joseph E. Leger Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Cassandra V. Adams-Leger of Centreville; his mother, Elzina D. Leger of Eunice, La.; three children, Jason Adams and Keith Adams, both of Centreville, and Ericka Monroe of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Joseph Leger Jr. of Garden Grove, Calif., Jimmie Leger of Atlanta and Jessie Leger of Port Arthur, Texas; one sister, Patricia McFarlin of New Orleans; and many other relatives and friends.

Friends will be received at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 450 Orchard St., Vienna, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Kenny Smith presiding. Interment will be at Mallett Cemetery, Mallett, La.

Dorothy A. Mattingly

Dorothy A. Mattingly, 92, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at Annaburg Manor, Manassas.

She was the wife of the late B. Kingsley Mattingly.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy M. and Robert V. Ellett of Lottsburg; and her niece, Mary Hope Burkett of Warrenton.

Friends may call at the Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington, 4510 Wilson Blvd., from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Tuesday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1914 North Randolph St., Arlington. Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Memorials in the name of Dorothy A. Mattingly may be made in the form of Masses said, or to the LPN Scholarship Fund at Annaburg Manor, 9201 Maple St., Manassas, VA 20110.

Elwood R. Woodyard

Elwood Roland Woodyard, 85, of Nokesville, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.

He was a longtime member of Church of God in Manassas, and had retired in 1981 from NOVEC as a supply clerk with over 40 years of service.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Woodyard Sr., who died in 1996.

Survivors includes his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia Woodyard; two sons, Leroy W. Woodyard of Manassas and John W. Woodyard of Spotsylvania; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Church of God, 8823 Rixlew Lane, Manassas, with the Rev. John Wilcoxon officiating. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of flowers, or contributions to the Church of God Building Fund, 8823 Rixlew Lane, Manassas, VA 20109, in memory of Elwood Roland Woodyard.
