Curtis McFaden
CHESAPEAKE -- Curtis "Eugene" McFaden died Jan. 17, 2002. Eugene was the son of the late Curtis M. McFaden and Genevieve F. McFaden. Eugene was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Aug. 30, 1935, and grew up in the Norfolk and Chesapeake areas. He attended South Norfolk High School and Maury High School and served in the U.S. Army from October 1950 to October 1953. Eugene was a locomotive engineer with the Norfolk and Southern Railroad and an active member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers until his retirement due to poor health. He is survived by his brother, Barry A. McFaden and wife Connie of Chesapeake; sister, Lynda M. Cullipher and husband Ken; niece, Amy C. Wlodyka and husband Neil; two great-nephews, Jack Curtis and Samuel David; a great-niece, Mary Neil; nephew, Christopher "Chris" Todd Cullipher; longtime and devoted friend, Hugh Shelton and wife Grace; and his faithful companion, "Chippy." Eugene will be remembered for his service with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, his love for animals and his compassio.for his friends. A graveside service will be held at Riverside Memorial Park Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge.

CHESAPEAKE -- Fred Franklin "Buddy" Tyson Jr., 66, died Jan. 16, 2002. Mr. Tyson was a retired painter with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Spruill Tyson; a daughter, Tina Tyson and son-in-law, Paul Kumpf; two sisters, Anne Tyson Boyce and Barbara Tyson; three brothers, Barry Tyson, Ervin Tyson and Bill Tyson; and granddaughter, Kristina Tyson Kumpf. A celebration of Mr. Tyson's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Tabor Freewill Baptist Church, Creswell, N.C. NORFOLK -- James McClease "Bubba" Staton II, 50, of the 900 block of Bagnell Road, died Jan. 13, 2002, in Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Charleston, S.C., he was a mess attendant, food service, Naval Air Station galley for 15 years. Survivors include his wife, Harriett Briggs Staton; a daughter, Michele McElveen of Norfolk; two sons, James McElveen and Corey Eugene Staton, both of Norfolk; three sisters, Betty Helms of Kansas City, Mo., Linda Staton-Jackson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Gabrela Staton of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Maurice Staton and Micheal Davis, both of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; father and mother-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. John R. Briggs Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents, Lois and James Staton. Born in Delaware, Katie was a nurse at Portsmouth Surgical, where she served for 18 years and a medical instructor at several local schools. Survivors include her soulmate, Pete Kors of Norfolk; a son, Patrick Hugo of Chesapeake; best bud, Kristin Terensky of Norfolk; her family at Portsmouth Surgical and Spanky, Ossie, Sammie, Frances, Fancy Pants, Maggie and Joe Joe. A visitation will be this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 5 p.m. Saturday, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, by the Rev. PORTSMOUTH -- Grover E. Chapman, 77, of the Churchland area of Portsmouth, died Jan. 15, 2002, in his residence. Mr. Chapman was born in Widen, W.Va. He retired after 34 years from C&P Telephone Co. and also retired as a funeral attendant from Snellings Funeral Home. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a member of the Golden Rule Class. He was a U.S. Marine Corps World War II veteran having served in the South/West Pacific; lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers; Herndon Lodge No. 264 AF&AM in Herndon, Va., where he was past master; Churchland Lodge No. 276 AF&AM; Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies and Khedive Temple of the Shrine; OES, Esther Chapter No. 37, Churchland. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Louise Thomas Chapman; a daughter, Margie Chapman Rankin Cassis and husband David Cassis of Charleston, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Mark Rankin of Wilmington, Del., Lauren and Lee Cassis of Charleston, W.Va., and Susan and Buck Chapman of Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by a son, Robert T. Chapman; a grandson, Brett Chapman-Zemaitis; two sisters, Margaret L. Chapman and Mary Kathryn Stanley. PORTSMOUTH -- Willie Davis Jr., 63, of the 600 block of Dunedin Road, died Jan. 13, 2002, at Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Norfolk. He is survived by three daughters, Arlene Cowell, Francine Davis and Willie Mae Davis of Portsmouth; two sons, Raymond Davis Sr. of Chesapeake and Freddie Lee Davis of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Margaret Banks, Veronica McMillian and Emma Williams of Chesapeake; and a brother, Freddie Davis of Norfolk. PORTSMOUTH -- Mamie Pauline "Tenny" Molohon, 72, who shared a home with her sister at 46 Loxley Road, was called to her eternal rest Jan. 10, 2002. PORTSMOUTH -- Napolean Clifford Smith, 85, of the 1300 block of Wool Ave., died Jan. 15, 2002, in Maryview Medical Center. Born in Smithfield, N.C., he was the widower of Gertrude H. Smith and retired from Inside Machine Shop 31, Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 31 years of service. Mr. Smith was a member and usher of Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Survivors include three sisters, Lucille Williams of Portsmouth, Ella M. Smith of Smithfield, N.C., and Bernice Jenkins of Raleigh, N.C.; three brothers, James D. Smith and George Smith, both of Raleigh and Robert D. Smith of Garner, N.C.; a host of nieces, including Gloria P. Christian and Zelda P. Scott, whom he raised, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone with burial in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at 2 p.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Alice M. Aguiar, 93, formerly of Barrington, R.I., died Jan. 17, 2002, in a local hospital. Born in Providence, R.I., Mrs. Aguiar was retired from Allendale Mutual Insurance Co., and had resided in Virginia Beach since 1979. She was the widow of Manuel D. Aguiar and was predeceased by her son, Leonard M. Aguiar. Survivors include her daughter, Geraldine and son-in-law, Capt. Robert H. Fred, U.S. Navy retired of Norfolk; daughter-in-law, Carole M. Aguiar of Virginia Beach; and her grandson, John M. Aguiar of Texas. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. William Joseph Cady Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- William Joseph Cady Jr., 78, of the 1700 block of Honorary Court, died Jan. 16, 2002, in Virginia Beach. Mr. Cady was born in Amsterdam, N.Y., the oldest son of the late William J. Cady and Veronica M. Cady. He served his country honorably in World War II as a B-24 bomber pilot. He retired as a lieutenant colonel following a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force. He later retired from Electronic Data Systems where he was a systems analyst. Mr. Cady was a graduate of St. Mary's Institute of Amsterdam, N.Y., and Syracuse University. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Air Force Association. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Willetta C. Martuscello and Catherine C. Francis. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Priscilla B. "Polly" Cady; his children, Elizabeth Cady Heischober of Virginia Beach, Thomas W. Cady of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jane Cady Wright of Norfolk, James R. Cady of Menlo Park, Calif.; a brother, John R. Cady of Mendon, N.Y.; a sister, Mary C. Brodie of Amsterdam, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Stephen C. Wright and Caroline P. Wright of Norfolk, Allison L. Hann and her husband, Harry J. Hann, of Virginia Beach and Vicki C. Baylor and her husband, James E. Baylor Jr., of Norfolk; two sisters, Thelma C. Britt of Grantham, N.C., and Melba Jackson and her husband, Lloyd Jackson, of Smithfield, N.C.; a brother, Deloit Cotton and his wife, Nannie Cotton, of Grantham; three grandchildren, Jerald L. Hann, Jean-Marie Cabaniss and her husband, Patrick Cabaniss, and Patricia Hann; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey S. Menzel. VIRGINIA BEACH -- Allen Stern, 69, of the 3100 block of Silver Sands Circle, died Jan. 17, 2002, in a local hospital. A native of Rumson, N.J., Mr. Stern was an All-Star Baseball Player for Rumson High School in the 1950s. He attended Florida Southern University and was employed with S & K Menswear for 12 years. Allen was a devoted husband and father. A native of Norfolk County, she was the widow of Willie Powell Sr. and retired from the STOP Organization as a school bus driver after 28 years of service. Mrs. Powell had been a member of Union Baptist Missionary Church, Suffolk, where she was a member of Senior Choir, Combined Choir, a Sunday school teacher and involved with many other church organizations and activities. Survivors include three daughters, Alverna Bolden of Baltimore, Md., Gracie B. Barfield of Suffolk and Shirley P. Brown of Norfolk; a sister, Virginia Stevenson of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; an aunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. CHESAPEAKE -- Rebecca "Becky" Warrington Marshall, 66, of the 2500 block of Wild Horse Ridge, lost a valiant fight against cancer in her home surrounded by her family and went to be with her Lord on Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at 7:50 p.m. Becky was born July 17, 1934, in Norfolk. She grew up in the Berkley section of the city and graduated from Maury High School in 1952. Becky married Garland Marshall in 1955. They moved to Virginia Beach, where they lived for 25 years and raised three children. Later, they moved to Chesapeake, finally retiring in their dream home in the Wild Horse Ridge neighborhood. Becky had recently retired from the Personal Lines Insurance Business, where she served as an account representative. A charter member of The Christian Church Uniting, Becky took an active role in all aspects of church life and leadership. She will be especially missed for her loving and animated children's stories and her "homemade" communion bread (especially the leftovers). Becky enjoyed sewing beautiful dresses for her granddaughters, nieces or any other little girl who needed a pretty lacy dress. She also made "Becky's Babies" that still decorate the beds of many young and older women. She was an example in efficiency by maintaining her career, working full time, raising three children and managing her household. She served as a role model for her sisters and children to follow. Becky was predeceased by her mother, Mary Baker Warrington Lee and her father, William Vincent Warrington. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 46 years, Garland; her daughter, Cynthia Martin; her sons, Edward and Ben Marshall; her son-in-law, Thomas Martin; and her daughter-in-law and dear friend, Suzette Marshall, all of Chesapeake. Becky was grandma to six grandchildren, Mary Rebecca Matson of Blacksburg, Va., Marshall W. Camden, Alicia E. Camden, Sarah J. Camden, Ben W. Marshall Jr., and Matt G. Marshall, all of Chesapeake. The oldest of five children, Becky is survived by two brothers, William Warrington of Greenville, N.C., and Thomas Warrington of Williamsburg; two sisters, Linda Tillotson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Roberta Cavender of Jacksonville, N.C. She will be truly missed by her brothers and sisters and in-laws, a host of nieces and nephews, many dear friends, her church family at CCU, the "girls from the office" and her "friends from Suburban." A memorial service to celebrate Becky's life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. James Luck, the Rev. Charles Chappell and the Rev. Forest Wells at The Christian Church Uniting, Virginia Beach. There will be a reception in the church Fellowship Hall following the service. CHESAPEAKE -- Gary Lee Wilkins, 43, of Kill Devil Hills and formerly of Chesapeake, died Jan. 13, 2001, in North Carolina. He was a native of Portsmouth and was a carpenter. Darnice Goodman
NORFOLK -- On Jan. 13, 2001, our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, Darnice W. Goodman entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born to John and Mamie Wiggins on Nov. 12, 1955, in Southampton County, Virginia. Darnice was educated in the Suffolk School system and was a graduate of Paul D. Camp College and Virginia State University. On. Aug. 14, 1982, she entered into holy matrimony with Lowell T. Goodman Sr. Together they both were blessed with six children: Lowell Jr., Danielle, Aaron, Christopher, Ashlee, and Amaris. She was a longtime employee of Cable and Wireless Communications of Norfolk, and in 1999 she began employment as a business manager with KMC Telecom Norfolk office. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Mill Neck Baptist Church, Como, N.C. She later joined First Baptist Church, Campostella, Norfolk. Darnice served on the Usher Board, sang faithfully with the choir, taught Sunday school and participated in many activities of the church. She was predeceased by her father, John H. Wiggins. In addition to her loving and devoted husband and children, Darnice leaves to cherish her memory her mother, Mrs. Mamie Wiggins of Suffolk; and her loving grandmother, Maggie Graves of Franklin; four brothers, John N. Wiggins of Virginia Beach, Ralphael Wiggins and his wife, Kim, of Hampton, Melvin Wiggins and his wife, Diane, of Franklin, and Lonnie Wiggins of Suffolk; one sister, Blanche Hicks and her husband, Timothy Harris, of Franklin; three sisters-in-law, Joyce and her husband, Carnell Elliott, of Chesapeake, Wilhelmina and her husband, Jesse Britt, of Weldon, N.C., and Mary Goodman of Suffolk; two brothers-in-law, Isaac and his wife, Shirley Goodman, of Virginia Beach, and John and his wife, Deborah Goodman, of Columbia, Md.; five aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Mack Harper Jr.
NORFOLK -- Mack Harper Jr., 80, died at his home on Jan. 15, 2001. He was born to Mack and Ada Moore Harper in Edgecombe County, N.C. He worked at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Norfolk NAS, retiring from Civil Service in 1976. Also, he was a veteran of the Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Navy Air Reserves, serving his country for more than 26 years. He was a faithful member of Azalea Baptist Church. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family, friends, and neighbors who will miss seeing him working on his projects in his garage and driveway. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and citizen who led through deeds and actions, showing those around him how to live, love and laugh. Mr. Harper is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Frances C. Harper of Norfolk; their son, Frederick L. Harper of Kansas City, Mo.; their daughter, Linda K. Pettitt of Huntsville, Ala.; and two grandchildren. Survivors also include his three sisters; his sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and his nieces and nephews. Mr. Harper donated his body to medical science as a way to support the education of the next generation of doctors. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Azalea Baptist Church in Norfolk. NORFOLK -- Carroll Weston Jordan Jr., a native of Norfolk, died at the age of 49 on Jan. 13, 2001, in the Northridge Hospital at Van Nuys, Calif. Mr. Jordan graduated from Granby High School and attended Old Dominion University. He was a championship tennis player and a member of the DeMolay, and had been a member of Ghent United Methodist Church. He is survived by his mother, Doris G. Jordan and his father, Carroll W. Jordan, both of Norfolk; his brother, Paul G. Jordan and his wife, Debra, of Pocatello, Idaho; and his sister, Mary E. Jennings of Hertford, N.C. Other survivors are his nieces and nephews: Ethan Jennings and Edward Jennings of North Carolina; Robbie Jordan, Myra Jordan Quigley, Katie Jordan, Lisa Jordan, Heather Jordan, Scott Jordan and great-niece Fiona Jordan of Idaho. Stanley C. Walker
NORFOLK -- Sen. Stanley Clay Walker died Jan. 15, 2001, in a Norfolk hospital. Senator Walker was born in Norfolk, the son of the late Rhea Lee Walker Sr. and Anne Winfield Walker. He served in the House of Delegates from 1964 to 1971 and the Virginia State Senate from 1972 to 2000 and was elected president pro tempore by the Senate in 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Norfolk. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and Norfolk Business College. Survivors include his wife, Sybil Moore Walker of Norfolk; two daughters, Susan Walker Meslang of Norfolk and Elizabeth Troy Walker of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren, Anne Christine Meslang and Stanley Walker Meslang, both of Norfolk; a brother, Rhea Lee Walker of Virginia Beach; one niece, three nephews and many cousins. PORTSMOUTH -- John Thomas Dunston Jr., 83, died Jan. 14, 2001, in Woodbridge, Va. He was an inspector of metals at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. After an early retirement he took a similar position with Duke Energy in Charlotte, N.C. He was a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge No. 178, Cradock Royal Arch Chapter No. 72, and Victory Chapter No. 16 Order of the Eastern Star. While in North Carolina he was a member of Oasis Shrine Temple and a founding member of Denver Masonic Lodge. He was also an Army veteran of World War II. A lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, she worked for a few years at Dam Neck, and for the last 30 years she operated summer rental properties in Virginia Beach. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she treasured her family, her special friends and her pets. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. VIRGINIA BEACH -- Betty VanLoen Jackson, 69, died Jan. 16, 2001, in a local hospital. A native of London, England, she was the widow of William George Jackson and had retired as an international hair designer. She was an internationally reknowned hairstylist who received the highest accreditation, awards, and recognition for her superb art in hair design and color. Her clients included members of the Royal Court in England, numerous celebrities, heads of state, and socialites to list a few. She was an aspiring poet and author. Above all she was a loving mother, grandmother, and wife. She will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Stemple and Denize Kearns; a son, David Howard; and six grandchildren. Hubert C. Tillery
SUFFOLK -- Hubert Cale Tillery passed away Jan. 16, 2001, at Nansemond Pointe after a long illness. He was 86. Born in Lewiston, N.C., to David Linwood and Lessie Taylor Tillery, he grew up with nine brothers and sisters in Southampton County, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in India during World War II. After military service and marriage, he made Suffolk his family's home. He was involved in automobile sales for more than 40 years. Mr. Tillery was a past member of the Lions and Elks clubs; past member and president of the Suffolk Shrine Club; and a Mason. He was a longtime member of West End Baptist Church and its Sunday School, serving as deacon and usher for many years. In 1998, West End recognized him as deacon emeritus. In addition to his parents, his wife of 50 years, Emelyn Hart Tillery, two sisters, Marie and Beatrice, and two brothers, Henry and Julian, predeceased him. A son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathy; and two grandchildren, John and Karen, all of Franklin, survive him. He is also survived by four sisters and a brother, Beverly Johnson of Newport News, Lessie Edwards and Katherine Daughtrey of Franklin, Eleise Hancock and Cecil Tillery of Sedley; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby at West End Baptist Church. Burial will be at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins, Va. The family will receive friends at R.W. NEWPORT NEWS -- Elizabeth Healy Cutler Downing, a lifelong Virginia resident, passed away Jan. 15, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Thomas N. Downing; and her sons, Gordon Cutler and wife, Jane, and their two children, Elizabeth and Joseph, and Nelson Cutler and wife, Kathryn, and their three children, Corydon, Nelson and Jonathan. Her first husband, Gordon B. Cutler and her son, Porter H. Cutler predeceased her. Mrs. Cutler Downing, the daughter, of Elizabeth and Joseph E. Healy, was born in Matthews County and was a graduate of St. Anne's School in 1941 and Sweetbriar College in 1945. She was a director of the Farmer's Bank of Mathews (now Bank America); a member and chairman of the board of trustees of the Charles H. Taylor Memorial Hampton Public Library; a member of the Kecoughtan Literary Society; and the Junior League of Hampton Roads. An avid golfer, she scored four holes in one over her playing career and was a member of the James River Country Club Women's Golf Association where she was a former club champion. A funeral will be held at St. Johns Church in Hampton at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial services will be private. Robert H. Pride Jr.
HAMPTON -- Robert H. "Bob" Pride Jr. was called home to be with his heavenly Father on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001. A native of Chesterfield County, Va., he spent most of his young years growing up in South Norfolk where he attended public school. He attended both Randolph Macon College and the College of William and Mary. Bob was a kind and loving son, husband, father, and friend to all who knew him. He lived life to its fullest until slowed by age and illness, even then finding pleasure in all he was able to do. He never met a stranger. He was self-employed as the owner/operator of Pride Motors, Bob Pride Inc., Bob Pride Aluminum Products Inc., Adobe Corp., and Bob Pride Construction Co. He was at one time a part owner of PDR Inc., Foundation Development Corp., and Century 21 Carmel Realty. Bob was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, the Randolph Macon Kappa Alpha fraternity, an inactive 32nd degree master mason of the Scottish Rite, a Cansurmount Counselor, The Randolph Macon Old Grads, the South Norfolk High School "Old Timers" Club, and a life member of the James L. Hale Memorial Chapter, American Ex-Prisoners of War. Until becoming too ill, he had served as a volunteer at the Hampton VA Medical Center and, even after becoming ill, he remained an avid supporter of the New Horizon Performing Arts Group. He was predeceased by his parents, R.H. Pride Sr. and Thelma V. Pride, and a son, William H. Pride II. Bob leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his loving wife, Frances Farmer Pride, with whom he shared a bond of love and friendship for 36 years, that only a fortunate few ever experience; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert H. Pride III and Pat of Newport News, Rock Elder Pride and Jane of Richmond, Randolph J.W. Pride and Kathy of Richmond; one brother, William Thomas Pride II of Newport News; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mabel Durham Harrison
DOVER, Del. -- Mabel Harriett Durham Harrison, 90, died Jan. 6, 2001, in a nursing home. Her husband of 63 years, William "Bill" H. Harrison, died in 1996. Born in Norfolk March 23, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Frank Owen and Alice Timmons Duncan Durham. She was the last of her generation of Durhams who, until the late 1940s, were the only Durham family in Norfolk. After graduating from Maury High School, she worked at Henry B. Gilpin Co., where she met her future husband. They married in 1932 and later were transferred to Dover, Delaware, where they resided until their deaths. Mrs. Harrison is survived by several nieces and nephews, Betty Durham Bailey of Charlotte, N.C., Barbara D. Vanne of Marco Island, Fla., Stephen D. Clemans of Poestenkill, N.Y., Elwood Barrows "Barry" Durham Jr. of Virginia Beach, John R. Durham Jr. of Falls Church, Va., David O. Clemans of Cape May, N.J.; and her sister-in-law, Mrs. John R. Durham Sr. of Norfolk. Another niece, Harriett Durham Batchelor, who was her namesake, died in 1998.
