Roy W. Shiflet
Roy Wayne Shiflet, 62, of 8874 Coopers Mountain Road, Dayton, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at his home. Mr. Shiflet was born Sept. 22, 1940, in Rockingham County, and was a son of the late Roy H. and Annie Myers Shiflet. He lived in the Clover Hill area and was a sheetmetal worker for Excel Steel in Harrisonburg for 40 years and was also a farmer. He was a member of the Clover Hill Ruritan Club and served as treasurer. Mr. Shiflet was a member of Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren. On Dec. 12, 1969, he married the former Mary Lieu Michael, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Roy Wayne Shiflet Jr. and Stacy Aaron Shiflet, both of Harrisonburg; four brothers, Charles C. Shiflet of Hinton, Linwood M. Shiflet of Fulks Run, Glen W. Shiflet of Broadway, and Rodney L. Shiflet of Dayton; and five sisters, Frances A. Yannel of Hinton, Juanita B. Smith of Dayton, June K. Counts and Louise S. Ritchie, both of Harrisonburg, and Donna L. Hartman of Dayton. The Rev. Paul Crumley will conduct a memorial service 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Benny E. Lambert
Benny Encil Lambert, 80, of Maysville, W.Va., died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Grant County Nursing Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Mr. Lambert was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Circleville, W.Va., and was a son of the late Ernest Lambert and Lilly Moyers Lambert. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Potomac Highlands Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6454. He and his wife operated the City Restaurant in Petersburg for several years. He owned and operated Lambert s Place in Onego, W.Va., and later worked for Stone & Webster in Mount Storm, W.Va. Mr. Lambert was a member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 453 in Cumberland, Md. He owned and operated Lambert s Trucking and drove a truck for Fairfax Sand & Stone in Scherr, W.Va. He was a member of Maysville Bible Brethren Church and was a former deacon. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ethel Harper Lambert; a daughter, Michelle Dove of Moorefield, W.Va.; a son, Roger Lambert of Maysville, W.Va.; a sister, Beulah Gorman of Dover, Del.; two half sisters; two half brothers; and two grandchildren. Pastor Eddie Simpson and Jay Keplinger will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Sunday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Burial will be at South Branch Memorial Gardens in Petersburg with military rites by the combined veterans organizations of Grant County and the JROTC. Harry C. Andersen
Harry Christian Andersen, 91, of Shenandoah, and formerly of Woodstock, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at his home. Mr. Andersen was born Feb. 23, 1912, in Toledo, Ohio, and was the son of the late Christian and Helga Grunbeck Andersen. He was a procurement man for Babcock Dairy in Toledo for 20 years. Surviving are his wife, Nellie V. Andersen; a son, Christian Andersen of Shenandoah; a daughter, Joan Lee Coon of Punta Gorda, Fla.; a sister, Ella Kriener of Toledo, Ohio; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hilda R. Williams
Hilda Ryan Williams, 83, of Mount Jackson, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock. Mrs. Williams was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Conicville, and was the daughter of the late Charles Elmer and Ada Montrose Fleming Funkhouser. She was a member of Valley Central United Church of Christ in New Market. On July 13, 1940, she married Carl Henry Williams, who preceded her in death July 17, 1970. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Zayhowski; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Rev. Thomas Rothgeb will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Monday at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson. Burial will follow at the Conicville Cemetery. Cleo C. Mitchell
Cleo "Gommie" Coursey Mitchell, 94, of Staunton, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. She had lived at Birch Gardens Assisted Living for the past seven years. Mrs. Mitchell was born July 17, 1910, in Highland County, and was the daughter of the late Charles Ashby and Nora Devericks Hupman. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fishersville United Methodist Church. She was an avid Rook and bingo player and enjoyed fishing and hunting. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 43 years, Charlie Franklin Coursey, and her second husband of 16 years, Stanley Meredith Mitchell. She is survived by two daughters, Charlene Beach of Waynesboro, and Bonnie Duncan of Hendersonville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Pastor Larry Nolff will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, where the family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Headwaters Cemetery. A service celebrating her life will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fishersville United Methodist Church. Spencer G. McAnulty
Spencer Gregory McAnulty, 32, of Shenandoah, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. McAnulty was born Aug. 7, 1972, in Harrisonburg, and was a son of Dale C. and Susan Foltz McAnulty of Shenandoah. He was employed at Coor s Brewery in Elkton and was a member of St. Paul s Lutheran Church. He graduated from Page County High School in 1990 and was a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, gardening and cooking. He was a University of Virginia football fan. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Christine Crouch McAnulty; a son, Garrett N. McAnulty; a daughter, Anissa N. McAnulty; two stepdaughters, Kira Carrier and Kendra Carrier, all at home; a brother, Nathan McAnulty of Shenandoah; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dale Foltz of Shenandoah. The Rev. Jeff Marble will conduct the funeral 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul s Lutheran Church near Shenandoah. Burial will follow at St. Paul s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Iva L. Grove
Iva Lorraine Grove, 90, of 2232 U.S. Highway 340, Luray, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Brill Nursing Home. Mrs. Grove was born July 5, 1914, in Rockingham County, and was a daughter of the late Joseph Gabriel Shank and Grace Argenbright Shank. She was a homemaker. On May 20, 1938, she married John Maurice Grove, who preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1980. She is survived by a daughter, Ann G. Vaughn, and a son, J. Pendleton Grove, both of Luray; two sisters, Janie Branum of Richmond and Goldie Cooke of Stuarts Draft; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Pastor Buddy L. Caviness will conduct the funeral 2 p.m. Friday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Luray. Marie L. Bishop
Marie L. Bishop, 64, of Staunton, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005. Mrs. Bishop was born Aug. 12, 1940, in Monterey, and was a daughter of the late Curtis Lee and Dorothy Elizabeth Johnson Rexrode. She was employed by the Virginia Trout Company. On Sept. 17, 1960, she married Glen Elbert Bishop, who preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1998. She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Samples of Middletown, Ohio, and Glenda Blackwell of Churchville; five sisters, Curtisene Adams of Maryland, Nina Conner of Roanoke, Sarah Hite of Fisherville, Jane Morgan of Crimora and Donna Dillard of Stuarts Draft; two brothers, Thurllo Rexrode of New Castle and Nathan Rexrode of Blue Grass; and two grandsons. The Rev. Donald E. Rose will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Friday at Headwaters Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation and the casket will be closed. Leon S. Rosenberger
Leon Sipe Rosenberger, 87, of 313 Third Street in Shenandoah, died on Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Bridgewater, Va., and was the son of the late Wilbert L. and Pearl Koontz Rosenberger. Mr. Rosenberger served in the National Guard during World War II and was a member of Fields United Methodist Church. He had worked at Merck & Company earlier in his life and retired from American Safety Razor in Verona. Leon was an avid H.A.M. operator (WA4ZQW) and very active with the Massanutten and Valley Amateur Radio groups. He loved the outdoors, belonging to the Massanutten Bear Club, fishing at many different spots along the East Coast, and camping. He was an active participant in Civil War reenactments, including New Market and Jackson s march through the Valley. On Feb. 23, 1939, he married Mamie Helen Dotson, who survives. Also surviving are a son, W.L. Rosenberger of Grant, Fla.; two daughters, Betty Ann Sullivan of Shenandoah and Christina Koontz of Hinton; two grandchildren, Lee Scott Koontz and Joseph Judson Sullivan Jr.; and two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Brooklyn Sullivan; nieces and nephews, Bud Dinkle, Peggy Watkins, Helen Walters, W.L. Rosenberger, Phyllis, Jean, Joel Crenshaw and David Lee Crenshaw. Leon was preceded in death by two sisters, Dale Dinkel and Vertie Crenshaw, two brothers, Ralph and Clark Rosenberger, and a grandson, Neil Sullivan. Memorial and burial services will be private. Mary J. Noftsinger
Mary Jane Kelly Noftsinger, 82, of Roanoke, and formerly of Vinton, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005. Mrs. Noftsinger was a teacher at William Byrd High School in Vinton from 1944 to 1957. She graduated from Radford University in 1944 and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. She was a charter member of the Vinton Chapter No. 136 Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4522, and the Vinton Baptist Church. Her husband, John Boyd Noftsinger Sr., preceded her in death in 1962. She is survived by a daughter, Mary K. Brumfield of Botetourt County; a son, Dr. John B. Noftsinger Jr. of Harrisonburg; a sister, Barbara K. Wilkerson of Roanoke; three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Oakey s Vinton Chapel with the Rev. Ann Reed Held officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at the chapel, where the Vinton Chapter OES will conduct an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.

Dorothey A. Yoder
Dorothy A. Yoder, 68, of Belleville, Pa., and formerly of McVeytown, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Valley View Retirement Community in Belleville. Ms. Yoder was born March 10, 1936, in Mattawana, Pa., and was a daughter of the late Milo M. and Mary K. King Yoder. She graduated from Polyclinic School of Nursing in Harrisburg, Pa., and was a registered nurse. She was a former director of the Mifflin-Juniata Community Nursing Service in Lewistown for seven years. She worked in Nicaragua with the Conservative Mennonite Missions Board for three years, was a public health nurse in Manchester, Ky., and also worked at Lewistown Hospital. She retired as director of nursing from Valley View Retirement Community. Ms. Yoder was a member of the Mattawana Mennonite Church, the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, the American Nursing Association and Pennsylvania Nurses Association. She was a former board member of the Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Association. Survivors include two sisters, Kathryn M. Yoder of McVeytown, Pa., and Julia G. Kauffman of Harrisonburg, and three brothers, Robert B. Yoder of Martinsburg, Pa., M. Leon Yoder of Lewistown, Pa., and Theodore P. Yoder of Belleville, Pa. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Valley View Retirement Community s Oakwood Chapel. At her request, her body was donated to the Humanity Gifts Registry. A private burial will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Mattawana at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Valley View Retirement Community, 4702 E. Main St. Belleville, PA 17004.

Lora C. Smith
Lora Clara Smith, 86, of Baltimore, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at Lighthouse Senior Living Center in Baltimore. Mrs. Smith was born July 12, 1918, in Cherry Grove, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Isaac Earl Murphy and Sylvia Virginia Bennett Murphy. She retired from the American Can Company in Baltimore as an inspector with 35 years of service. She graduated from Circleville High School in 1936 and was a member of Circleville Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Richard Smith; a daughter, Joanna Robbins of Knoxville, Md.; a son, Earl R. Smith of Harrisonburg; a sister, Helen Johnson of Solomons, Md.; a brother, Herman Murphy of Cherry Grove, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. The Rev. Paul O Gorek will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Circleville Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at North Fork Memorial Cemetery in Riverton, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, W.Va.

Gary L. Stucky
Gary L. Stucky, 63, of North Newton, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kan. Mr. Stucky was born May 18, 1941, near Kingman, Kan., and was a son of Ruby Stucky Schrag of Pretty Prairie, Kan. and the late Martin Stucky. He was educated at Kingman High School, Bethel College, and Kansas State University. He later completed pastoral studies at Eastern Mennonite Seminary. From 1971-72, he undertook tropical disease research with Mennonite Central Committee in the nation of D.R. Congo. Mr. Stucky was a research chemist at Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, Ind. for four years. He was professor of chemistry at Eastern Mennonite University for almost 25 years and also taught at at the University of Rochester (N.Y.), James Madison University, and Bethel College. He was commissioned a chaplain by the Western District Conference of Mennonite Church, USA, in January 2003, and served in Virginia and the Newton area. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Janet C. Harder Stucky, whom he married June 22, 1996; three brothers, Steve Stucky, Dave Stucky, and Gordon Stucky, all of Kingman, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews. His body has been donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Pastor Norma Johnson will conduct a memorial service 11 a.m. Friday at Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton, Kan. Memorial donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee. Arrangements are by Baker Funeral Home, 114 North Sycamore St., Peabody, KS 66866.

Elizabeth "Betty Sue" Kline, 77, of Main Street in Broadway, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at her home. She was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Shenandoah County, and was a daughter of the late William L. and Artis Rhinehart Coleman. She was employed at Southern Kitchen in New Market. Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Brown of Bergton, and Donna Sue Lowery of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Michael Kline of Reading, Pa., and Richard Kline of Singers Glen; a sister, Artis Allen of Woodstock and nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted 6 p.m. Friday at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway. Her body was cremated.

Dayton E. Alt
Dayton Ernest Alt, 85, a resident of Oak Lea Nursing Home in Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Alt was born May 23, 1919, in West Virginia, and was the son of the late John and Hattie Cook Alt. He lived in the Hinton community most of his life. He was a member of the American Legion Post 188 and People s Baptist Church. His first wife, Nettie Thompson Alt, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Alt, whom he married Aug. 27, 1971; two sons, Sheldon Alt of Harrisonburg and Bruce Alt of Grottoes; three daughters, Wanda Kelley and Kathy Woolf, both of Harrisonburg, and Karen Messick of New Market; a sister, Violet Yankey of Petersburg, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Wendell "Sonny" Henkel will conduct a graveside service 11 a.m. Friday at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Goldie S. Gutshall
Goldie S. Gutshall, 85, of McDowell, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Shenandoah Nursing Home. Mrs. Gutshall was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Bartow, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Seth Monroe and Hettie Hester Wilson Selmon. She was a homemaker. On Nov. 1, 1947, she married Walter "Ralph" Gutshall, who preceded her in death July 4, 1999. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Marie Gutshall, and a son, Ivan Judy Gutshall, both of McDowell; a sister, Rosie Pugh of Staunton; a brother, Otis Selmon of Cherry Grove, W.Va.; a granddaughter, and a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. Lester LaPrade will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. Burial will be in the Monterey Cemetery. Mellie Marie Harold, 83, of Maysville, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins, W.Va. Mrs. Harold was born Dec. 10, 1921, in Landes, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Simon Obert Borror and Cora Alice Ayers Borror. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God. Survivors include her husband, John G. Harold; six daughters, Virginia Thorne of Dorcas, W.Va., Blondena Bennett of Circleville, W.Va., Betty Simmons of Franklin, W.Va., Peggy Sions of Cabins, W.Va., and Teresa Harold and Debra Helmick, both of Maysville; four sons, John R. Harold of Burlington, W.Va., Marvin Paul Harold of Petersburg, W.Va., Randy Harold of Kitzmiller, Md., and Glenn Harold of Dorcas, W.Va.; two sisters, Ruth Crites of Durgon, W.Va. and Rhoda Riggleman of Moorefield, W.Va.; a brother, William Dawson Borror of Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
